Charlie, I have had the pleasure to attend your talk on this topic twice now. And each time you inspire me. You definitely left a mark, a very positive one, in education. My hope is more people in education will follow you. Hat Tip to all your colleagues, who I know help you in this effort of bringing open source to education.
Charlie is exactly the kind of creative-thinking educator and empowering mentor every student should have the opportunity to learn from! Terrific, inspiring talk!
This is so inspiring. A passionate, talented educator speaking truth plainly and boldly. Thanks to Charlie and all others in Penn Manor explaining to this nation -- and other nations - the wisest path for creating the learners this world needs so desperately.
Well done Charlie! As organizer of a similar experiment, setting up Tech Crews in 4 Mississippi school systems in the mid 90's, to wire their schools for 10Base-T networks, I believe I understand the thrill of seeing kids step up, learn an incredible amount very quickly, and accomplish stunning things in the process. Keep up the outstanding work! Really cannot wait to read your book: "The Open Schoolhouse"
I've been working on a similar program with schools in Cambodia and have found Charlie's work inspiring, helpful and challenging. So happy to have found a succinct, clear and thorough presentation from the source itself. Thanks Charlie for your work and this talk.
Unassailable logic. Saving money. Enagaging learning. Handing tools to our students. Helping them explore, not memorize. This has always been the (unrealized) goal of technology in education. And it is "individualized"! Great talk. Remember "There's no corporate app for that."

Thanks for sharing your experience Charlie! I have been spreading the word about FOSS in my local communities for more than three years now and having a history of success like yours makes understanding the real power of FOSS easier. Your analogy to the toys makes perfect sense to me and makes it clear why its so important that people has *real* access ot the computers. Keep up with the amazing work!
Great work getting your school to officially adopt this approach, Charlie! I've been running a tolarated but never officially supported side show in my district since 1997, when I installed my first GNU/Linux lab in Arlington, Virginia, where I work. I can validate all your observations about how beneficial it is to student learning. I'll definitely check out your Github repo. Way to go!
Charlie, I watch you on the Linux Action show, and I have to say you are inspired me to be more engaged in my daughter's education and providing her with the skills I learned and empowering her to learn and explore. Providing her the confidence and the ability to do something that most find magical. Thank you for inspiring me, I am more atune now with what is going on in school and more focus on help where I can make our society more open and free for our children to grow.
I've been a FOSS advocate for two decades... but Charlie's actually in amongst it nurturing and inspiring the next generation of the FOSS community. This is what we need everywhere. I live in New Zealand, and we're facing exactly the same challenges - the awkward fit between schools and IT - and I think Charlie's approach is the solution: give the power to the learners to teach and to build confidence, competence, and community while they, probably unwittingly, lead a transformation in education and society.
Charlie Reisinger Never fear - there's much work to be done, much wasted effort and exploitation to be replaced by constructive collaboration in a a gradually opening world :) Keep up your great work!
Great talk Charlie! So proud to have you as a contributor on Opensource.com and ecstatic that you get to share your work with others, of course, the open source way!
Hi Charlie, what you've done with your school program is crazy inspiring! I'm a developer, educator and parent from Romania. I work with young people over here to get them to become technology innovators rather than passive consumers. Or like you said "technology inventors and innovators instead of technology tourists". Just wanted to you know that I find your work inspiring and in the spirit of open source, I'm going to borrow (and perhaps hack) a few of your ideas. Keep up the good work and the enthusiasm!
For nonprofit, education and literacy groups with limited budgets, Charlie's edtech model makes so much sense. Great TEDx talk on free and open source software and a creative approach to making technology inclusive and available to everyone. Look forward to sharing the talk with our 34 adult literacy organizations in New York State. Thanks Charlie!
I cannot even begin to tell you how much I enjoyed hearing about this program. I'm sharing it out to our teachers and some of our IT people now. I want our kids involved in something similar to this!
Dean Mantz Thx for making me aware of Charlie's work! We need more use of free open source software in classrooms. I'm hoping the Tech4Hornets (tinyurl.com/tech4hornets) will get things going with students and FOSS.
Miguel Guhlin Thx Miguel. Mindshift recently posted a lovely article about our program. Some lively discussion in the comments. blogs.kqed.org/mindshift/2014/06/why-arent-more-schools-using-free-open-education-resources/
A wonderful program. People are scared of the open source for some reason, years back it may have been true. Just that it isn't so now. Tesla is making the Auto makers scared of his technology now and they will only slow down the development by doing so, or cripple it all together.
***** as long as the hacker ideology is NOT a malicious attitude, to steal or destroy another. To aid and/or cause change is another thing altogether, to bring about change.
I was really impressed with the trust that they have given to the students (every student has administrator privileges on their device and they are able to update, install, etc) and how the students became involved and were part of the process. This to me is a great learning experience for the students! Well Done!! I have shared this with our school. Many thanks from South Africa
Excellent...very relevant. As an educator and instructional leader I appreciate you giving voice to our students. Our students need to be encouraged and inspired to explore and become producers and not simply consumers of technology.
This is amazing, honoring students' inherent inquisitive nature is the key to learning. Added benefit is the open source ecosystem gets better with more users. Way to go Charlie!
This is a great presentation by a great IT leader in today's education space. Free and open source software provide tremendous opportunities for learning and yet frequently those voices like Charles Reisinger get drowned out by the status quo.
The ideas in this video parallel the reasons my spouse and I set up the Club 125 makerspace in Greenbelt, Maryland. If we don't actively engage our youth, we lose them. We lose them to boredom, to frustration, and more. The answers are simple. We change what we’re doing or we can continue to do things wrong. Charlie's path is an inspiring start.
As a retired college professor I found plenty food for thought here. I've always thought the first step for anything is trust. You might be onto something here.
What an awesome way to equip a school with technology - Some schools spend tech dollars on software, but often students and teachers are left with only the bare bones and nothing in the way of creative software because of ignorance, fear and outdated policies.
"Are you a tech innovator or a tech tourist?" Brilliant message. How many are brave enough to lead with "I trust you"? While I applaud 100% of what Charlie shares, I wonder how we can get girls represented, too.
Open Source is the future. Schools can buy used older computers and use Linux instead of Windows and OS X. Every school should give kids a Raspberry Pi and small teams can write programs to make them do things. Its nice to learn PhotoShop or Office but these are closed source software. Lets get our kids to be creative. Learn to think, create and re-imagine. Great video.
This just may be the catalyst for an idea I've had to usher in the next generation of #Drupal rockstars / wage earners. . . . Thank you, Charlie Reisinger and phil shapiro.

Imagine the impact this could have on national economic competitiveness - seriously.

This video has me thinking of Miguel Guhlin and his integration of open source Linux.
Thanks Tim! Feel free to reach out if you have questions. More info here: www.pennmanor.net/techblog/?cat=69.

Dean Mantz You know, this makes me think about @netman(Jim Klein ) ubermix.org/ effort. I hope to "grow up" to facilitate something like this.

Amazing, profound, and inspiring. Thanks, Charlie.
I wish programs like this were available here in the UK and everywhere! Open Source is the future!

Awesome talk!
Mabuhay from Quezon City, Philippines!
Phenomenal empowering and truly engaging career ready and globally competitive! More schools need to adopt this model! Amazing!
Love the student apprentice program. Way to let the students show what they know and grow it as well!
I love this! I completely agree with everything said! Keep up the good work Charlie!

This is such a great approach. So many teachers don't see this obvious angle.
I just wish more schools around the world followed your lead. Great talk!
This is very very good for schools and others who are wanting to learn great job! I hope this goes greater
Thank you for opening my mind to a topic I know so little about. How very cool!
As a retired college professor I found plenty food for thought here. I've always thought the first step for anything is trust. You might be onto something here.
This is inspiring! We need to be doing more of this in Hawaii.
This is exactly how we should teach children about technology. It shouldn't be knowledge reserved for the few in "power", but distributed to all.
open up the computer and trust our students - excellent - deserves wider attention!
It has been two years since the talk. I'd love to hear an update on how the program has changed since then.

"You will never do anything in this world without courage. It is the greatest quality of the mind next to honour." - Aristotle (thx, charlie and team)
"Trust is the glue of life." - Steven Covey
The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards open source. #Inkscape
i think i heard about this project on the Linux Action Show a while back.
