Love the discussion! I have a Steam Deck and the draw for me was the portability. I've found that I am playing more than in the past. I'm not chained to a room and can hangout with the family while playing. If you're like me, I love the flexibility of the Steam Deck as it is more PC like than the Xbox. With some "tuning", you can take advantage of GeForce Now, Blizzard Battlenet, XBox GamePass via cloud play. Also, I am hearing that Sony's cloud gaming is possible too. Pretty cool stuff! Don't get me wrong. The Xbox series X is a fantastic machine and Xbox Live ecosystem is great. If you are not into tuning, then you can't go wrong with the XBox. Merry Christmas everyone!
If you play a lot of multiplayer games, the Xbox Series X is a slam dunk. Steam Deck is limited primarily to single player games. We all know multiplayer games have dominated the sales charts since the PS3 and Xbox 360. I love my Steam Deck, and as much as I like to say that it is a revolutionary device, it has a fatal flaw.
That's a good point. It can play some multiplayer games like Apex or even Halo. It's not the most comfortable device if you're going to be playing sweaty tho.
I have the series X and it will always be big daddy. (UPDATE) Finally received my steam deck and have had it for a week now. Beware of FedEx when they ship it, there are tons of bad reviews receiving broken steam decks or they get stolen. My only gripe with the steam deck is that the thumbsticks are too small and for some reason this hard rubber material that makes your fingers slip. Other than that this thing is crazy, it's my first time playing steam games and holy moly its crazy how much more it has to offer than consoles alone.
Great comparison. I too am a busy dad and I went with the Steam Deck. Portability was a big draw since our main TV is sometimes used by other family members but I also have the Steam Deck Dock to play on the big screen. I already have a couple of modest gaming computers and about 600 games already on Steam. I got the 64 GB Steam Deck on sale and added a 1 TB micro SD car as well as a 1 TB SSD to my Steam Deck. Not only has the Steam Deck opened up the ability for me to play many of the games I already own but there are also many AAA Xbox games on Steam Deck as well as many AAA Sony games so to me that covers both the Xbox Series X and PS5. I do have a lot of Xbox games on my Xbox One X but I also stream them to my phone connected to my Xbox One X controller with an adapter. When all is said and done, the Steam Deck is an incredible value in gaming. BTW, to complete my "modern" gaming consoles I also have a Switch OLED for Nintendo exclusives. What a great time to be a video gamers. Oddly enough, in a good way, my Steam Deck reminds me of my old Sega Genesis Nomad from way back when. It is pretty mind-blowing to see the advances in gaming tech from then to now. I know I do not take any of it for granted.

Got a Switch around the same time I preordered Steam Deck last year and I’ve rarely used the Switch outside of dock. I find that as I get older, it’s becoming too much of an eye strain to play handheld - especially for text heavy games. Decided to cancel Steam deck and just get a series X and I couldn’t be happier with it.
I’m 56, so I totally agree because the eye strain really sucks. I’m trying to decide between getting a Xbox X or Steam Deck because I’ve never been a big PC gamer and don’t even have a PC. I’m leaning towards the X.
54 here. No kids, so the TV is mine to share with my wife. The Steam Deck screen is too small for these old eyes. As it is, my Switch is docked 99% of the time. I returned the Steam Deck, sold the Series S and bought the Series X.
I am 50 and the eyestrain was a thing but a good pair of reading glasses fixed that. The ability to play my games in any room of the how and on the go was literally a "game changer" for me.
Just shipped my Steam Deck Back and purchased the Series X. I don’t really care about PC games. I simply enjoy the simplicity of console games. I did my 10 year stint as a PC gamer. I just don’t want to go back to building and tinkering again. I am sure someone else will enjoy my Deck.
I too am a busy dad gamer and I happen to have both the Series X and Steam Deck. I'll tell you based on experience. The Deck performs as good and as smooth and is graphically capable as the X on most games that I throw at it. It's just on a smaller screen. For busy dad gamers that will have to share TV with their family I reccomend getting the Steam Deck!
Steam deck is way better, you don't have to pay to play online, you can play pc games, pc vr games and Xbox series games, you can also use it as a regular pc, it will also emulate everything up to a PS3
I love my Series X, it's a great console. The Steam Deck is really nice to have. The newer units I hear have better sounding fans so that's a win for those that get them after I did.

I think console gaming has declined over the gens in terms of game playability. It’s all graphics graphics graphics! But at least with steam you have a higher choice of games that are just overall better to play.
I agree that Steam has a larger catalog of games to play across genres. The one thing I like about consoles over PC tho is I don't need to configure anything for the games to work. Updated a graphics driver a couple of weeks ago and my game performance tanked in a few games and I needed to figure out why.

Hmm, I don’t have a gaming Pc. I’d like something that I could hook up to my Pc monitor or 4k tv and get 4k playback. I really like the ability to mod on the steam deck. I don’t really play a lot of games but the ones I do, I tend to mod a lot. But it doesn’t sound like it will be able to handle upcoming AAA titles all that well on a 4k tv. 😕

Not natively. I had to go to the desktop, download a program that could download battle.net and then download Diablo 4. Still downloading so we shall see if it runs well.

Price is where most people see the difference. You won't find a PC/laptop with the same performance as an X at that price point. If you're willing to spend more, you can def get more performance, but it can be pricey.
The steam deck is huge I wouldn't call it portable. I'm from the gameboy era. Second the series s added to a portable screen you can make it portable and you can fit all that in the same bag the steam deck requires to be 'portable". Xbox is on the decline, they misread the market and they're pushing unfinished garbage that even makes Sony look good. The steam deck may not have the highest performance but gaming is the focus. I would ditch both and stay with a Nintendo switch and a PC. But if I had to chose, my inner child would lose it having a steam deck just for the device.

Pretty easy choice, one you can take with you, one is only in front of your TV but has better visuals.
I love them both for different reasons. Steam Deck is awesome for travel or playing in bed. Series X if I want better visuals on a bigger TV.

That's a great point. Not all games just work and that's a big downside to the Steam Deck. Consoles do make that a lot easier, which I can appreciate.

That's a great suggestion. Plus, playing the Steam Deck while laying in bed is just awesome.
Plus you can just pause (sleep mode), do your dad stuff and grab it later again.

I've enjoyed them, but I haven't played a ton. I've used Game Pass Ultimate and played Forza 5 on PC.

I got RPG fan new cool LED green cooling fan on the bottom Seagate expansion card 2 TB and 8tb and anther led Seagate 1tb SSD all other run

Yeah, the screen on the Steam Deck is 720p so it won't really matter there. Diablo 4, I'm running low settings to get it to run on the deck.

Steam and Xbox don't talk to each other, so you'd have to do them all again.
