This video is still a huge help 6 years later!
We were able to repair our dishwasher in no time at all - turns out we also had a piece of glass causing a blockage. Everything drained perfectly as soon as it was removed. Thank you so much!

Your video helped me solve my problem. It was a piece of plastic blocking the impeller from spinning.
You put $500 back in my pocket, and I really appreciate it .

Thanks a lot. Just did this super easy. I’m impressed with your camera work now that I know firsthand how tight that space is in there to try to video and actually fix it.
Thanks so much Rocky😊😊😊
This fixed my issue. Had a small piece of glass stuck in the bottom of the machine, which was stopping the draining function. Thanks!
Great job👍
Excellent tutorial... The video was so easy to follow it only took 15 minutes to fix my dishwasher! Saved taking time off work and having to pay a repairman. Thank you Scott
Thanks Shannon
Wow..just what it needed..took more time to empty the water than it did to fix...About 4 pieces of broken wine glass...5 years old and still running strong again..Thanks Fixitguy...!
I'm going to add something to your troubleshooting process. My Frigidare was sporadic on draining. Sometimes it would drain it all, sometimes the whole bottom would have an inch, sometimes, just the center would have water. Sometimes the water was clean, sometimes still cloudy.
So, I figured the drain pump was going bad. Ordered one from Amazon at 1/3 cost of OEM and replaced it. Worked great right out of the box. Next day, once again, water standing in the bottom. Kept researching and found someone suggesting to make sure the hose was clear where it entered the P-Trap. Took that hose loose, poked around with a screw driver, nothing there.
Put it back together, sometimes worked, sometimes didn't. Today, took off P-trap and found debris in here. In fact, found a metal elbow fitting, like would be on the input side of the dishwasher. This had to have been there for 30 years! Removed it but wasn't satisfied that that was the issue. I am sure this was causing some issues with slow draining but couldn't be the whole problem. My dishwasher draining issue had really become a problem in the past 2 weeks.
Went back to the drain connection at the dishwasher, removed the hose and this little black rubber piece fell out, all deformed. Started looking into this and discovered it is a back flow prevention flapper. Cost about $10 on Amazon. It's purpose is to what? Block water that is in the discharge hose from entering back into the dishwasher! I've got one on order, should be here in a couple of days, but I'm betting this makes my problem totally go away.
Wow,
Nice detective work Danny😊
Update??
@@WilliamPurcellHotshotCustom yeah the suspense of it all...
Woke up this morning and found a rock inside our drain impeller. Who knows how tht happened but thank you for the video!
Glad it helped!😊👍
Thank you for this tutorial!!! That's exactly what was preventing my dishwasher from draining. Seriously grateful for your video!!!
Thanks so much Emily😊
Scott, as I was watching your video, I noticed we have the same dishwasher, same watch, same shoes, same faucet, same Mrs. Meyers soap and same problem... well, mine wasn't glass. It was a bunch of food. But your video was great. Excellent explanation. Thanks.
Thanks Brian,
I like your style: Black dress shoes , Rolex submariner watch and good Dishwasher and soap.
Omggg you’re the literally the same person…twin souls. 😂 jk! Funny, great minds…
@@ScottTheFixItGuyChannel ooh wait Scott… Rolex submariner? Wait I need to reassess my career path. What’s your occupation again?? Sorry I am a new viewer. I always use the turkey Baster to drain the nasty water. Btw I see your pfp..you have an Asian wife? God bless! When we are good ones like myself and your wife we are RIDE OR DIE. Only cuz my mom been training me since babyhood to be the perfect wife. I like to do these things on my own. I don’t like to bother anyone when I definitely am confident in myself. Thanks for your vid! It’s not glass I’ve cleaned that all out. My guess is the pipe from d/w to garbage disp is clogged. Any tips? I have a moen garbage disp and a Frigidaire d/w (not my choice I loathe Frigidaire.) all the online manuals say turn off the power first but idk where the power is, some say under the sink but others say newer built homes I have to turn off via circuit breaker. I’m scared of that thing..please help!
Airgap was the one that fixed it for me, thank you!
Glad I could help!👍😊
Thank you for your video - gave me the confidence to attack my own dishwasher problems!
Cheers.
Awesome,
Thank you 😊👍
Salute for this video just got mine running again! Your the man
Glad I could help👍😊
Exact dishwasher, exact problem. Missed the piece of glass the first time. Great job dude!
Thanks so much😊👍
Really easy to follow it! And my dishwasher started to work great again. Thank you so much for video
Thanks for the advice. I'm a maintenance man by trade I did what you said but eventually had to pull the dishwasher out and pull the drain lines in the back attached to impeller housing. BINGO!!! A bunch of rice came out of the drain line where that little rubber thing is. But thanks. This video DID HELP. 👍
Nice work!

OMG! Thank you so much for this tutorial! I did everything you showed in the video and I had a TOOTH PICK sticking out of the very bottom mechanism keeping it from turning. Also, there was a SCREW in another past that of course I don’t know the name of that part but IT WORKS NOW! By the way, my husband and I got up at 4:30 in the morning and that was when we discovered it wasn’t working. Here it was about 40 minutes later and now our dishes are cleaning while I’m typing this thank you to you. God Bless You for All You Do!

I watched your video, and the minute you pulled out glass, I knew that was probably what was wrong with mine, too. I took it apart just like you taught, and sure enough, glass!! Thank you for the easy to follow "do-it-yourself" tutorial. I feel so proud that I didn't need to call for reinforcements. lol :)

This tutorial saved me! 🎉 thank you very much. I had a slightly different model but most of all it was the same. Drains perfectly now
I love it😊👍
You are the man ! Videos like yours are what make youtube great.
Thanks so much Tom👍😊
Hey Scott, we have almost the same model dishwasher in this rental house. We hardly use the dishwasher, maybe twice a year for holidays. We're getting ready to move so I was going to run a few loads before packing stuff up. I opened it and found it hadn't drained all the way since Christmas dinner. It was pretty foul. Bailed it out like you showed and disassembled it and was surprised by how much water (and scum) was still down under the filters. Gave it a bleach bath and pressed on. Didn't find any obstructions other than build up. Bleached and washed with hot water all the parts in the sink, reassembling as I finished each part. The first filter piece you take off was the last to put on. I thought it was 1 piece. The hot water dissolved the crud and it came apart. And out popped a damn shard of glass. Slapped it back together and it works fine now (and doesn't stink). Thank you so much for such a well detailed, concise video!
Nice job👍😊
Just watched the video and fixed our dishwasher. Thanks a bunch brother

A 5 year old video just saved me from pulling every drain line on my dishwasher in order to find a clog. Had no idea the thing above my sink was called an air gap and served a purpose for the dishwasher.
I’m so happy it worked 👍😊

Very helpful video, thank you. The turkey baster tip was especially good.
Great tutorial, couldn't figure why my washer would just wash over and over. Same situation, glass stuck.
Nice job👍
Wow Thanks!!!!!. I was sooo terified I'd have to go back to manual scrubbing plates. I just battled a massive hair grease soap clog that gallons of otc declogger wouldnt touch.. I grabbed 25' $30 auger. It took 3 weeks to finally get it cleared, it just kept slogging up and down, hiding in different parts of the pipe...anyhow it was running ALOT of very hot water, plus TONS of dawn dishsoap through the drain after I augered that finally fixed it.. Then, today, I found standing ick water in dishwasher and I'm like OOOOHHHHHH NOOOOOOO the clog has returned...but it didn't...it was a tissue lodged in the spinny white thing..Thank u sooooo much.
Very cool😊👍
Thank you kind sir! Worked like a charm.
Excellent,
Thanks James😊👍
I had a straw wedged in the damn propeller! Thank you!

no other repair videos mentioned the airgap - that was the problem - thanks!
Very helpful! Thanks!!
Thanks Todd😊
Fixed my issue, there was a piece of cermaic plate that broke off and got wedged deep in the drain. I was about to put it all back together after draining everything until my wife got home and found the ceramic shard. If you guys don’t see it at first, make sure you look extremely closely.

Super helpful video! Thank you!
Never found anything but put it back together and it worked fine 🤷
Nicely done😊😊😊
This was helpful but having issues fitting the filter back. Not sure what Im doing wrong
Thank you so very much for this! My problem was in fact some plastic shards in the air gap, soon as I cleared that turned it on and off again water started shooting out the air gap! Lol my bad for not putting the top back on but I was super happy. Put the air gap top back on tried again and boom! Water draining as it’s supposed to where it’s supposed to!
You made it easy enough to follow along, just not sure I would consider this an easy fix? But hopefully this works for my friends unit that I’m about to go try and fix
only had to get part way thru to find the issue. Plastic UPC tag blocking the drain. Thanks for the info.
Thank you. It’s was a useful video.
Thank you Merry, Merry Christmas 😊🎅🎄🍁☃️🍽️🥂🌠🎊🎁
Thanks for the video!
Had to go a few steps further to fix it, ie unclogging the pipe to the sink drainage.
Thanks Terry
Just helped me, Didn't find any thing in there since I used shop vac with small attachment to suck up water but it worked right after. Thanks!
Excellent,
Thanks
Thanks for the video. I found a screw inside my drain pump. One that secured the front of the dishwasher to the underside of the counter top had fallen inside and made its way inside the pump and was stopping the motor from turning the impeller

Thank you
You’re welcome James😊
Who is whistling?!? Anyway, I did all of this but remove the cover over the impeller and I'm not sure which action did it, but mine works again! Thanks for sharing and especially for showing how to force the dishwasher to drain by pressing the Start/Cancel button! Ahhh, I 'm listening to it drain right now. Sounds like money NOT going down the drain!
I’m glad it worked👍
YOU ARE THE MAN, thank you so much, you were right, Easy Fix !
Great Tutorial Scott! Unfortunately, this didn't solve my problem. I installed my dishwasher about a year ago and it stopped draining last week. I followed your tutorial exactly and didn't find any obstructions, but when I put it back together, it still is unable to drain. I pulled the entire unit out of the cabinet and took the drain hose off to see if there were any obstructions, but I couldn't find any. Do you have any suggestions? I'm looking into purchasing a drain pump ($109) from Tribles, but my fear is that the Circulation pump ($225) is the real culprit. At that point, I should just purchase a new dishwasher. Any advice?
I wonder if the air gap up near the faucet is clogged?
Great video. Helped immensely. Quick question. At 41 seconds is there something crawling under the dishwasher. Thought for sure i saw something moving.
I bet you’re right😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@ScottTheFixItGuyChannel are you wearing an Invicta?
Amazingly informative video, thank you kindly sir. 👍 fixed the dishwasher in minutes.
thanks for the video. do you know what model that is?
Note that the drain pump impeller is not visible from the top, you have to remove it from the bottom of the dishwasher. The impeller seen from the top is the main circulation pump.

so if anything is caught under the plastic cover blocking the impeller this will screw it up that bad? I will need to investigate further. Thanks!!
Yeah, if the impeller is blocked and can’t turn it will stop draining.
@@ScottTheFixItGuyChannel impeller turns still no drain.
Having the same issue. Going to try this.
For real gee!! God bless youtube
Help! I followed these directions exactly and it was clear but I hav e a black plate with lots of holes in it and I do not know how it fits back in?
Can you send a picture of that piece to my email at: scottthefixitguy@yahoo.com
What screw bit are you using to unscrew the 2 screws?
I took everything apart, but I found two pieces of glass in the filter that you remove right before you get to the part with the t-15 screws. I removed the cover and sucked out the water with the shop vac, so unless the shop back sucked up the glass piece, I didn't find any additional pieces of glass down near the impeller. It spins freely too. So I reassembled everything and it's running on a short wash and I am crossing my fingers it's fixed, but I didn't find anything around the impeller. I'm hoping it's not a bad impeller motor or something... Although that would be just my luck.
I had problems with mine lately. It shot out the PF code. I cleaned out the filters and I didn't get all the way down as you did. But, I ran one cycle so far and it hasn't quit on me yet. If I still have problems. I will take the white housing off and clean under that. I wished I would have seen this video sooner. Lol
Nice video!
Thanks Richard
thanks
Thanks! Worked like a charm
Thanks bro!
Any time👍😊
Good video,excelente!,help a lot.thanks for share it .
What if my dishwasher doesn’t have an air gap that leads to my sink? Where would it be and how would I check it?
You can remove the drain hose where it connects to the disposal and clean it out.
In the beginning of the video, You say to press the 'Cancel' button for 3 seconds? What does that do? Does it make the pump turn on? I have the same dishwasher, which also will not drain. I have taken apart the drain assembly like you, but did not find the culprit. :( Looking for more suggestions here, because I do not want to call a repair professional as it is an old device. Ideas? Help? Thanks!
3 seconds should do it.
You might try unplugging it for a few hours.
I would put the drain hose in a bucket to test how well it drains.
Does that ball in front of the impeller have to be up against that drain hole when you reinstall it

Thanks, pretty good demo.... but you went to A LOT of trouble getting that water out. I have a piece of 1/4” día plastic hose, gets into small tight spaces & siphons water.out easier & about as fast into a small bucket.
Thanks for going to the trouble of making video & documenting repair. With all the filters it’s interesting the glass could even get down that far!
Good idea😊
yes, a siphon is easier and cleaner, and so is a wet/dry vac (remember to remove the filter)...BUT, he used "tools" quickly available and relatable to the average homeowner, probably in an arm's reach on the counter right above the dishwasher.
Not everyone knows how to set-up a siphon, or how to get one started which can be gross if you don't have a hand pump. And, whether or not you know how to set up a siphon, it's a very good idea to remove the main body of water using a cup because if that water can have some bigger floating debris that can quickly clog a small siphon tube.
To save a little time when using a cup, and for a little less of a mess, rest a good size bowl on the DW door and fill it up with each cup of water, and then you don't need to reach up and over to pour each cup into the sink.
Note: if the water has been sitting for few days it may stink, so before removing it pour half a cup of bleach, mix it up for a few seconds, then let it sit for 15 min, and this will make it a bit more tolerable when removing it.
Thanks so much. This saved me a plumber visit. I found a piece of glass.
Thanks Camilla 😊
