Never mind what you might see season one, this show WILL exceed any expectations you might have, and will quite possibly become your favorite show.

As a person who you would regard as old I must point out that Giles isn't being creepy, this is just how people interacted when it was landlines, face-to-face and pretty much little else (although this is shown to be transitioning to more impersonal communication during the seasons). Personal space is now much wider, even before Covid came along, but there is nothing odd about his behaviour for the times and the plotlines.

And considering the ongoing and almost universal understanding that poor mental health is closely associated with lack of human interaction... I'd say we have some course correcting to do. (studied even suggest that lack of physical affection seriously screws kids up. Hell, skin to skin contact is essential for newborns)
I know a LOT of people that say "I don't like to be touched" and it is always related to trauma. Making that into something of a cultural standard is not (imo) a healthy coping mechanism.
And I've said it before, I'll continue saying it forever, it *genuinely* makes me sad that suspicion of men is accepted as natural. Men are people too, shockingly. (and men HAVE learned to be "careful." I remember years ago an ex-teacher pretty much told me to avoid getting into teaching bc these attitudes are soul crushing. I've worked in care for 3+ years and it's pervasive there too. I constantly get warned for hugging service users. It will NEVER stop me because I WILL comfort a human being in distress, but imagine the toll it takes on a person to have evil thought of them based on assumptions)

It's interesting that I'm visiting this video today. Just got news that one of my favorite teachers passed away. I remember him as being a very good, and invested teacher. The type of teacher that is there for the right reason. He wants to help students. When helping any of us, he would often put his hands on our shoulders as we sat at our desks and lean down over our shoulders. This was a form of encouragement, but would likely be looked at oddly now.

More the 4:3 TV framing. In movies and newer 16:9 TV shows there's more room to fit two actors on the screen at the same time. But in older 4:3 shows like this you didn't have a whole lot of room to get both people on screen, so extremely unnaturally close conversations were normal. Just a consequence of the format.

what giles said, "you are not looking at your buddy, you are looking at what "ended" him" Is pretty accurate. The human expire, the human soul is gone and a demon soul moves in and take control of the body, the demon retain all memories of the former soul so it can pick up their mannerism, how they talked, how they walked, etc...but they are separate entities.

I love your theories and questions at the end of these. One thing I want to remind you was said in the ep since you mentioned thinking the friend would survive and maybe they'd help him control himself. Giles warned them that when they see him, it's not their friend, it's the thing that killed him. When you get turned, YOU'RE not actually turned into a vampire, rather you seem to be dead, and your body is now the flesh suit a new monster uses to get around. Don't think that was their buddy anymore. Still, this show looks like it'll throw plenty of curveballs!

You're on Season 6. All I can say is that, Season 1 is Season 1. We get our ups, we get our downs. A Lot happens in a short period of time and we soldier through like a relatively new Slayer trying to save the world from the forces of darkness.

I watched through all of Buffy for the first time after watching Supernatural, and started to notice how Supernatural might have been a spiritual successor of Buffy.

Yes, I feel BtVS pioneered a number of techniques now widely used in teen fantasy shows: season story arcs, combining horror with humor and satire, pastiche, focus on character development. BtVS didn’t invent these things, but was one of the first shows to combine them all. Then there’s Buffyspeak, which is pretty unique.

Happy to know you're enjoying Buffy. Loved hearing your thoughts on it. I'm glad you're taking into consideration those special effects from a time that was considered new and a different approach. Plus, there wasn't a show like it anywhere. Some might even say it was the example or the blueprint to the shows that came afterwards. So, I'm TOTALLY in. I think everyone should give Buffy a chance and just watch it. And people do tend to usually watch it again cuz sometimes you don't notice things before on your first watch and on the second go, the light bulb turns on and things make more sense this time around and now you understand why it had to be that way. It's like a revelation man lol. I've lost count as to how many times I've watched this show and I still find it interesting watching others and hearing their thoughts, ideas, predictions and understanding of the show and where it's gonna lead to next. It was even studied in universities. So yeah, I'm so excited for you Dakara.

great reaction to finish just the tip of the iceberg of greatness that this show is.... even with the dated style/efx, you could see the beginnings of the style especially in the writing and cool witty dialogue... the first season was definitely the show "finding it's feet/voice", and it's fun to look back knowing what's to come and even better with someone just discovering it. great stuff as always, D! a CTU for you today and keep em coming!

the jar is holy water, holy water is like acid to vampires...it burns if it touches their skin.
Buffy = sassy, main hero, comical, supernatural
Willow = very intelligent, inquisitive, hungry for knowledge
Xander = humour, character designed to make the show feel more grounded, troubled
Giles = complicated, intelligent, well informed, wise, cautious
Angel = dark, brooding, cunning, complicated

THe original plan was to have Jesse in the opening credits in episode 1 & 2 - and to fool you into thinking he was part of the main cast - but alas, they didn't have the budget to do two sets of credits.

I prefer shows like this where things needed fixing over time. If thy are considered great from the get go they will more than likely be dead sooner and/or continue beating what fans no longer consider worth it (ie things like _Game of Thrones_ and _Heroes)._

It’s still early on so if I can correct your opinion of Giles and “answers”. Whedon shows are very character and dialog driven. So much so that the “secondary” characters are critical to the plot and character arcs. ALL OF THEM. Stories are so intertwined that all the characters have critical dialogue. You really need to pay attention to EVERYONE. THANKS.

never thought that a grown man being close with teenagers was odd back in the 90s, but looking back it does seem strange compared to these days. I had many adult friends as a teenager, but the mindset was different then. I always liked having mentors in life, it was all very innocent. As an adult now though, I wouldn't be close with teenagers, unless it's family or something. Seems super imposing

Considering this show is like the original among all shows you like, i think you will love it. Season 1 was just a filler show for another show that had a break when it came out, and then in season 2 it picks up and just keeps going to the end.

My high school was an open campus much like Sunnydale's (multiple buildings, lots of outdoor space, etc.). It was pretty much impossible to keep people from leaving. Even though the entire campus save the roads out was surrounded by a fence, part of it ran through woods with little visibility, and there were always multiple holes cut in the fence in the more out-of-the-way stretches. No sooner would they be repaired than someone would cut them open again. It's really difficult to completely close off a campus like that.

I'm always happy to see a new reactor starting his/her journey in this fantastic world, that of BTVS.
Yep the CGI is awful, but the plot and the caracthers compensate this :) Buffy is a fantastic protagonist, lovely funny and badass, Willow and Xander very good sidekicks, Giles a great mentor and Angel a very interesting and mysterious guy (for now it is so at least, but will it always be so? ;) ) I hate Cordelia :D
One important thing about BTVS vampires is that they are not like other series, like Twilight where Bella Swan, even as a vampire, had kept her soul, mind and good heart. Jesse, on the other hand, was definitively lost, his soul had passed over and his body was possessed by a demon who had inherited his memories and personality, but it wasn't him in fact.

Season 1 is not as bad as everyone recalls. The effects will improve as will the writing but the characters are nearly all there although they hadn't decided what to do with Angel just yet.
2 points: don't compare this to other shows which came later and copied this one. They all did it, we know but "Buffy" did it first. Feel free to point out actors who went on to bigger things if you wish.
Second: keep track of how often Xander comes to the rescue. A lot of fan like to bash him because this was the '90s and his character was written to be how Joss Whedon was when he was in school so people tend to bash Xander for that. Time and again he saves Buffy or Willow or the school or the world. Sure he screws up, call him out on it but also give him credit where it's due.

Just my thoughts, I do not wish to engage the gatekeepers:
    1. There is nothing wrong with season 1, except it comes before season 2-7.
    2. Julie Benz the actress who played Darla bullied Alyson Hannigan, the actress who played Willow, some of that animosity is real (they patched things up and became great friends later.)
    3. There is an unaired pilot, to check out after the season, that had a major change in it
    4. It was hard to watch this show, because my mom knew Giles from a string of coffee commercials in the 80's.. she used to make sounds, when he came on screen
    5. Charisma Carpenter originally audition for the role of Buffy, they made the role of Cordy up after her audition
    6. There is a spin-off and you should not be told the name of it for several seasons, but you will and it hurts upcoming episodes
    7. This is my 3rd favorite show of all-time, only surpassed by this shows spinoff and "Doctor Who", because of the connection to my childhood
    8. Enjoy the ride, you only get to see this for the 1st time, one time, so enjoy this your way, there is no wrong way, it does have flaws
    9. If you got to this point....sorry, I have no more, but leaving it at 8 seems strange
    10. So does leaving it at 10....
Welcome to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, take your time, all are invited and no one should hijack your experience, the show will do its job. So sit back, put your seat in the relax position and welcome to the *S-----s*... I don't think they name their group yet?
