I doubt they do steal ideas they probably have it roughly planned out well out in the future, they already have a license deal or the licence owner said no at the time.
It's hard to complain about similarities in licensed things because you are working off the same art.
I mean even if they do we do kinda sign over our idea to them so it's hard to get mad when you have to agree to it. It would suck but it's not something worth getting angry over imo.

It could just come down to timing too, like if they already have a mansion set coming they don't want to approve an ideas one or a licensed one because they already invested time and money into a design this year but 2 years down the line maybe they have a spot but they already rejected an Adams family mansion so they just go straight to the licence owner.
I think it's a lot more complicated than it seems on the outside and if Lego want to stop the conspiracy theories they could be more transparent about the process but I doubt that will happen due to contracts with licence holders and I'm sure their legal team would rather they not say anything.

Absolutely. I do think it would be nice if they are inspired by a certain part of a particular fan design that they at least gave a public acknowledgement and thank you - nothing else, just thanks

@@Stud-Lord yeah definitely, I'm sure it would make the original designer's day.
I'd like to see more transparency in general but with lawyers and contracts in play I doubt we will ever see it.

I would not mind LEGO bringing back rejected idea sets, but at least they can be courteous by giving credit to the authors. There does not need to be huge profit sharing or monetary compensation, but acknowledgment would make day and night differences for these volunteers who gave their ideas.

That's the problem with the Ideas program. It doesn't matter wether your design is approved or not, you're rights are gone. In my opinion you're always better of to sell your design on rebrickable or similar sites.

I don't feel like Lego is copying ideas. The ideas program is popular and you can find submissions based on almost every popular tv show and movie so there's bound to be similar ideas. However, the official Lego sets always have a unique build and graphic design so it's not the same set even if the concept is the same. You can't own an idea alone so the creators of ideas set shouldn't be mad if they see other creators with the same concept or Lego themselves making the same concept.

I keep wishing Lego would make the Ratatouille, Wallace & Gromit and Polar Express sets, so it would be nice if they finally made sets for them.

Let me be clear, a lot of not all of the designs are already existing ips. From the snow white house to the Adams family. Lego has to get the rights to make a set in the first place.
For anyone to "build" something they didn't actually create is like making a drawing of Donald Duck. As good as it may be, you don't own Donald Duck. You don't get to hold rights over Donald Duck and can't publish Donald Duck.
If Lego were to take a castle design or a city design and copy it that might be a whole different ballgame.

Found myself here after going to buy the "Planet Earth and Moon in Orbit" and realizing it was a rejected Ideas set that they've BLATANTLY ripped. At least give the guy credit for the idea! It makes me feel gross.

After all we have seen with the ideas platform, I can’t believe anyone would make an entry, especially a licensed one.

This is interesting, but in some examples, I would expect them to look the same if they are trying to be faithful to the material they are replicating.

I would like Lego to make that wild west train set and the Roman and Ancient Greek temples. And some more middle ages castles, Ancient China and ancient Japanese temples and buildings, ancient Arabic palace from real arabian history, a Tzar set with ancient Russian palace and figures and Marco Polo set with his travels to China and Mongolia.

No question they take the ideas, as they said, it becomes their IP. Also, not doing an Addams Family set is criminal.

  • @DeannaGilbert616
    @DeannaGilbert616 4 месяца назад

I wonder, has TLG ever approved a set which was based on any sort of IP?
Because I can totally see there being legal issues with approving a set before they actually get licensor approval. And even then, have they ever credited the creator of the Idea if they did approve it?
There’s all sorts of IP land mines.
And the disclaimer about taking ownership is a legal requirement to even HAVE the Ideas program. Because as you say, they could have something in the works already. This is why most creatives will block you on social media if you send them a story or art idea. Because that opens them up to lawsuits, even if you can’t copyright an idea.

I have a suspicion that close concepts to results can likely be due to both the submission and the full set being faithful to the real thing they are attempting to emulate. I mean, with so many bricks in so many colors, and typically a similar scale in mind, I find it hard to see two versions of the same emulated shape looking that different at all.
And then there is the flipside that it is ran by LEGO. I think things like this need to be taken with some salt.

  • @themansky

I think they definitely steal sometimes but others don't because its take a while to design and produce a set and if they try to make it accurate to source material, the fan design and lego design will look familiar however for example i think they completely ripped snow white set, timing is about right set was declined 2 years ago which is about what it takes them to fully design and produce enough of them and it looks basically the exact same as fan submission

The Snow White set being rejected I feel was probably a Disney decision since it's the second most important IP to Disney after Mickey Mouse. In the end I think Lego and Disney decided to make it to promote Disney 100 and the new Snow White movie. It just seems like the perfect set to celebrate Disney's anniversary. If you look at the official set design, there are significant differences. To me it's obviously not a copy just because of how different the build is. The only thing that's the same is the roof color.

Star Wars Bionicle type sets was presented on Ideas then built by Lego. Minecraft was presented by ideas built by Lego- multiple sets. Jurassic Park presented on Ideas built by Lego. Hot Dog mini figure presented as an Idea built by Lego. All Ideas sets all rejected all made not as Idea sets. Hmmmm???

With series that Lego is already doing IE NASA, the realistic answer is "we don't need to make this an ideas set because we already have the idea to make more NASA sets". Honestly If I were in-charge I'd have already blocked NASA sets from the site.

Ideas work by the General Public submitting designs to Lego which if they garner enough votes they then get reviewed. There is no way of Lego policing it without them seeing the design at any stage which doesn't leave them open to these accusations. Take the Snow White Cottage, even if they had excluded it at first submission, saying they were already working on one, th 9:44 ey could and mostly likely would still be accused of stealing it. If they made the submission process so strict to preclude anything they already had a license for nothing would get submitted or get deliberately submitted under the wrong category.

People on ideas are creating stuff that is either A) A common thing to create in other mediums or B) Part of another licensed property
They are also using Lego, a licensed product, to produce these common or licensed ideas
If Lego wants to make something, they have the rights to do so, Ideas creators do not, that's the reason you vote, so Lego can go ahead and make it if they aren't already in talks
It's probably the reason relatively mundane ideas get picked sometimes, just a high vote count for something they're able to do

LEGO RUNS THE CONTEST. LEGO set the rules. If you don't want to play by their rules, don't play. 😂

    • @m.ostrowski2031
      @m.ostrowski2031 4 месяца назад

Not a contest. It’s literally the submission of set ideas which upon receiving 10,000 supporters have to be reviewed by LEGO. They have a habit of rejecting very well designed sets for seemingly no reason, with similar things popping up later down the line. Some people give them the benefit of the doubt, however many of these ideas are so oddly specific that I personally wouldn’t defend the large corporation that increasingly seeks to make more money off its sets.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Taylor Swift house becomes a set. Not one of the ideas submitted designs but one LEGO do themselves. With so many people submitting the same idea I think sometimes people forget that as much as the “Ideas” program is a way of fans potentially getting an official set made of their idea, for Lego it’s mainly for market research. They get all these submissions, not all of which get the required votes but it gives them a host of information as to what could potentially do well as a set idea.

  • @roygo10

Personally I believe LEGO does steal ideas because there are too many coincidences of very similar sets popping up not long after an idea was rejected.
