Great choice today my friend! This is an epic Kansas piece. I’m pretty sure that I’ve seen this live before. They’re at a whole other level live! There’s so much more Kansas to explore. Prog at its BEST!!

Epic song and great reaction, Brandon! Can you imagine being 16 and hearing this song for the first time in 1976? We were so spoiled and we didn't even know it.

Saw Kansas 12/02/77 on The Point Of Know Return Tour at The Cleveland Coliseum with Pablo Cruise opening. I tagged along with my older brother and three of his college buddies who were big Kansas fans. I had only heard Wayward Son before and that day heard Dust In The Wind for the first time. Needless to say I was not too familiar with their music and didn't know what to expect. Kansas came on staged and I was stunned. They were jaw dropping. I was amazed at what I was hearing and seeing and became a huge fan to this day. And recently as a Birthday present my brother and I went to the 45th anniversary of Point Of Know Return concert in Cleveland. It was great and brought back a lot of memories. Great band!

Glad you reviewed this incredible tune. It’s always been my favorite from them. I saw Kansas in 1980, it was my first concert ever. I was SO hoping they’d do this song live, but they did not. Still a great show and was a pleasure to see the legendary Robbie Steinhardt. But “ Magnum “ is a wild, riveting ride that never grows old. It’s just magical. Glad you enjoyed it.

I like how you thanked each member of this incredible band by name. The Original Six, as they’re known to Wheatheads, were truly gifted and special musicians who had unique chemistry and an elevated kind of creativity. Each member was among the all-time best at their respective instrument(s) and in Kerry Livgren, they had a composer who had few peers in the rock world. It’s a true testament to their abilities that their music can still put new listeners’ jaws on the ground over forty years later.

Magnificent magnum lol. Such a clean recording. The main theme at the beginning sounds like some kind of One Million Years B.C. movie intro. Kansas' best effort in my opinion -- I love it!

As everyone else has said, the album, Leftoverture, and this song are brilliant. Great Prog rock. Glad you enjoyed this as much as i have over the decades. Another band you might enjoy is Ambrosia. Their first two albums in particular, are very proggy. From 1975, their debut album, I’d recommend the song Time Waits For No One. It’s not a long song, I think it’s right up your alley. 🔥

I’ve seen Kansas 8 times in the 70s. And typically they close their shows with this song. While Kerry Livgren wrote the prog tunes & Steve Walsh wrote the more straightforward rockers, the unique thing about Magnum Opus is that all 6 band members contributed to the song. They are truly amazing, and better live than in the studio!

Thank you for not reducing KANSAS to those two radio format hits "Dust In The Wind" and "Carry On My Wayward Son". The production of this group was so much more exceptional in musical quality than what unfortunately these two popular compositions do not really encourage us to suspect. And "Magnum Opus", which is one of my favorite tracks, is eloquent proof of that. Prog at its best!

Originally, this song was called " Leftoverture ", because it was made up of leftover music parts that each band member had penned...but it was decided to make " Leftoverture " the album title. The 1st solo is distorted bass, BTW, and not a guitar solo(many think it is a guitar solo). See Kerry Livgren's autobiography " Seeds Of Change " for more details
The titles for each section was the band attempting to be humorous/whimsical, some other prog bands at this time were doing similiar things
Live version from " Two For The Show " is better, the violin is more dominant(as is always the case for live Kansas)
Play this for those who claim Kansas isn't a prog band
    RIP Robby Steinhardt 🎻

Agree! The "Two for the Show" live album is THE best live performance I've ever heard recorded from any band. The haunting violin and other "ghostly" sounds in the Magnum Opus intro section (not on the album) is frighteningly epic.

So many textures in this piece, a real musical buffet. With all the different sections and changes i can't help but draw parallels with La Villa Strangiato ...if Rush had three more people in the group!

So much Genesis influence in parts of this. Listen to the end of this song and Fly on a Windshield from The Lamb for a great example (last section is named Gnat Attack?). BTW, you have to react to The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway...note that it has to be done by reacting to entire sides of the 2 disc/album set ... It won't make sense if you don't as the songs flow into each other and it is a concept album. Your head will explode listening to the first 2 sides in particular. Don't sleep on the last 2 sides though.
