I LOVE this song SO MUCH!! It feels like it used to be when you were going out at night, for dancing, fun, and shenanigans!! LOL!! When it comes to 80's music, there is no 'one vibe', which is what made it such a great era!
This is definitely one of the original earworms of the 80s. Once you hear the sound, you never forget it. Even if you have no clue what the song is about.
Gorgeous piece from the eighties. This still gets a lot of radio airplay. The exquisite piano over the aggressive synth base sound creates an incredible vibe. The lyrics are wonderfully positive and timeless.
I agree. You Can't Get What You Want... one of my favourite all time songs! Played it during a motivational workshop on setting goals for 20 somethings. Don't think they particularly 'liked' it, but they got the message. I hope.
There is something so charming about this song. You have the eighties synth drums plus the bell like tone of the keyboard is so sweet and then the lyrics and Joe's gentle tone...Great memories!
This type of sound has been dubbed *Sophisti-Pop* and it includes artists like Swing Out Sister, Double, Basia, Simply Red, Roxy Music, The Blow Monkeys, Johnny Hates Jazz, and even Level 42 and Sade. Joe Jackson's musical output is very eclectic. From 1940s jive (Jumpin' Jive) to new wave / rock ("Is She Really Going Out With Him") to out & out jazz...like "Steppin Out"..even classical music. He also won a Grammy for his all instrumental album "Symphony No. 1".
This is totally the sound of freshman year in high school...Nostalgia for us oldsters. I like that this young lady always finds something to appreciate musically.
omg my most favourite joe jackson song! this is a classic, it never gets old or fails to get me moving. his whole album this is from, NIGHT AND DAY, is wonderful! ❤ it is kinda weird to me that jay didn't innately groove to the bright sound and thumping beat - i feel like i just can't help myself 💃
I remember when this came out, it was so different than his previous releases but it was one of the best albums of that time. Mine was on vinyl and I wore that sucker out and bought the CD later on.
This is an incredibly 80's driven sound. The keys and the bass are distinctive and the groove is perfect. It has a groove that gets you moving, as Amber is doing throughout. But have no doubt this is an early 80's classic.
I took this song mostly for granted back then (it was EVERYWHERE), but these days it's one of my favorites. I also remember him playing this on SNL that year.
Just love me some Joe Jackson. I remember spinning this tune back in the day and it's still one of my favorites. I'm the Man, Look Sharp and so many more great songs in his catalog 🎶🎶🎶
Oooooooh, that song is pure nostalgia to me now. I recall listening to it to calm my anxiety when my parents were fighting with each other. There's an optimistic tone to the song. It's aged really well.
It's very interesting, and really, fitting, that there was that specific context to your originally listening to this song, because some of the lyrics actually describe a couple putting the fight that they just had behind them, and deciding to "step out" for the night! Brilliant song, both lyrically and musically. Joe Jackson is such a great artist!
@@christianman73 I had no idea about that. I was 12 years old when the song came out. I found temporary mental sanctuary in the up tempo rhythm and the high notes of the innocent xylophone(?) sound that can be heard throughout the song. Thanks for the clarification on the lyrics.

Joe Jackson has two main styles: his more jazzy pop stuff like this, and his rawer punkish sounding early stuff. Check out "Got The Time" or "I'm The Man", I bet you will have a hard time believing it is the same guy!
Night and Day is a MASTERPIECE, of an album. Between Steppin' Out, Breaking Us In Two, Real Mean and A Slow Song, it's simply unstoppable. Not to mention one of the best albums of the 1980's. Highest recommendation.
This and Fagen’s The Nightfly came out about the same time in 82. I was mesmerized by those two records! Completely opened up my musical horizons! I was 13.

My favorite aspect of this video is how even in his fantasy, in the new York dream, joe Jackson is still a piano player, just in a slightly nicer place. Talk about well adjusted. Edit: The cadence or tempo of the song is the pulse of the city, the heartbeat of new York.
I've been a piano tuner/ technician for some 48 years and I tuned his electric Yamaha in AZ before the concert when this was number 1 on the charts! The bass line is epic in this tune!
"Give the people what they want"... unless I don't like it. Then I'm going to pout like a little baby. As usual, Amber provides insight and a seemingly genuine appreciation for virtually any genre requested. Good job, Amber.
I guess I don’t see where he was pouting. He said it wasn’t for him and that should be ok. He doesn’t have to like every song they react to. At least he’s honest about it and did not tear the song apart. He also said he would be willing to check out other songs by Joe Jackson so he’s at least open minded about it.
Jay's interpretation of "give the people what they want" is short- sighted. He thinks people tune in to see them reacting to the songs that have been requested. That's not what the people want. The people want to see them enjoying the music that they grew up loving. Nobody, and that means nobody, watches a reaction channel to see the hosts shit on the music they love. He doesn't have to like every song. But find something positive to say and let Amber do what she does. I mean, she is carrying the channel. She picks the songs, gives the best analysis and insight on the songs. He pretty much just reads the scripted parts. If she hadn't joined him, this channel would be dead.
@Mike Harris I don't have a problem with Jay or any other reactor not liking a song. That's more real than people liking everything. Jay didn't bash the song. I think when Jay heard the song was from the '80s he expected the typical '80s music he so loves. He was not expecting something more sophisticated. You're right. This channel wouldn't be a success without Amber. I'm always impressed at how well she analyzes a song on first listen.
You don't have to like everything. I personally love it, but it takes me back. It was on the radio all the time when I was a kid, and it's bright and happy. I love the piano in it. And the lyrics are phenomenal.
One of my all-time 80s favorites videos cuz of the piano. Thanks for sharing. I always like the positive that Amber can see in each review. Appreciate it
His first album “Look Sharp!” has some great bass playing throughout it. “Is She Really Going Out With Him” is the hit from that album but there are plenty of killer tracks. “Sundays Papers”, “Happy Loving Couples”. “Fools in Love” is a cool reggae song. I love this album.
Got the Time is my breakout track for this album. I've owned Look Sharp in every format (vinyl, CD, cassette and digital download. It has that frantic quality that gets you moving.
I know a lot of people will recommend "Is She Really Going Out with Him?” and rightfully so, but I will also recommend "You Can't Get What You Want (Till You Know What You Want)". A great bass line and killer saxes.
I know! I love this song. I'm perplexed at what he didn't like about it. If course, he's allowed to not like songs. But I wonder what it was about it that he didn't like bc this song is pure 80's to me. 🙌
@K He probably didn't like it because it didn't have synthesizers and drum machines which was typical '80s. It had to be a shock to hear real instruments.
Another song that came out around the same time that was huge (radio and MTV) was Duran Duran's "SAVE A PRAYER" I remember both those videos replayed continually on MTV. It's a great listen and another sound experiment that I think both of you will like. Totally unique sound and one of their bests.
This song always takes me back to my early college days. I absolutely love this vibe, and when I hear it I have to just stop and immerse myself in it. Joe Jackson is a super talented musician, and I think his jazz roots really show in this video. You didn't seem to notice that the "simple folk" were enjoying, and dreaming about, what the "rich people" were doing. The maid was imagining herself in the other woman's clothes out dancing with a handsome guy. Joe was a simple guy playing a really nice piano that the other man came home to. I think you will enjoy some of Joe Jackson's other works, and you will be surprised that it is the same guy, when you hear them.
Nostalgia song for me. Reminds me of getting ready to go out and heading to the clubs. Back when I’d go out at 10pm and stay out till we were thrown out. Now I’m home at 10pm, ready for bed for the most part.
I love this song. The chord changes are so interesting. You guys REALLY need to check out "And We Danced"by The Hooters. Fantastic song. I think you'll both love it. Very 80s, but it rocks. Love the reaction. Peace!
I just got so sad listening to this song. I love it and always have, but this time it reminded me of how young and vibrant I was back then, literally a kid... and how long ago it was. Time really just stepped on me so hard that I had to shed a few tears. The 80s were amazing because every style was possible.
On my playlist since the 80’s. Always relaxing to listen to. It got a lot of play on MTV back in the day. A welcome contrast at the time to some of the New wave stuff that was on constant rotation at the time before Vh1.
I listened to this on repeat for hours for days on end when I was deployed to Iraq. The sound is light, bouncy and fun. No worries Jay. Try out " Breaking us in Two". It's one of his best songs.
Love this 80s song and joe jackson hit it out of the park with this song. This was the first song i heard from him and just loved it. The lyrics also hit hard.
I sort of gave up on listening to the radio in the early 80's as a teenager. But this was THE song that made me decide to start listening to the radio again. It's jazzy innovative and paints a picture of New York nightlife
Y’know in 1982 I heard this and I felt so modern and sophisticated! I ran downtown and bought the album! I was 9 years old! You are missing the effect because you are hearing it in mono. In stereo it was a staple on smooth jazz stations.
Despite Jay's apparent discomfort, there's nothing at all wrong with this one. One of my very favorite songs of all time is also called "Steppin' Out," this one by the great Robert Cray, whom y'all have been neglecting to get back to. It's got a super-cool bluesy vibe Jay is sure to appreciate.
The song was a Top 10 song in US, UK, Canada and Ireland. It was nominated for a Grammy as Record of the Year in 1982. But many people think it was his 2nd best song. His first hit song was “Is she really going out with him” back in 1979. I think you might like it more than Steppin’ Out.
Joe Jackson is a genius on piano and with his singing like Elvis Costello is with guitar and his voice. I'm such a huge Joe Jackson fan that it's hard to choose, but I do recommend the live version of "A Slow Song'
Stepping Out is one of Joe’s best! The imagery is fabulous. It’s quintessential 80’s. Thanks for the memories! Gonna go to Apple and download this song. 👍🏻

Agree with comments form some other folks suggesting 'Is She Really Going Out With Him' as a follow up. Great song. Really enjoy the honesty of both of your reactions. Keep on keeping on and thanks.
YES!!! I love this song! I agreed with Amber, that bright, airy piano was awesome. Loved it when it came out and you could find it on MTV just about every hour. I never even cared about the lyrics, too much. I liked his voice, too. For me, it was a happy sound from a happy time in my life. It's always a shock to think this was 40 years ago!
I was very young when I first heard this song… but hearing it again in my 30’s, and 40’s… and now I’m 50… I’ve grown to appreciate it. Give it time sir😊

Thanks Jay and Amber I suggested this one! It's a cool and happy tune! I'm sorry Jay wasn't feeling it but Amber gets it like I do! 😁
I adore this track and his voice is brilliant, always loved Joe Jackson
Thanks for suggesting it, Jeffrey. I like this song too 🥰
I love the Joe Jackson song “You can’t get you want until you know what you want”… Very versatile performer!
Jay & Amber this song has LOTS of horns and Joe Jackson plays the Sax AND Sings!
Yes that's a good one!
SOPHISTI-POP
Description: "Polished Upscale Pop. Sophisticated Pop music arose in the United Kingdom of the mid 1980s as an offshoot of the New Wave movement. Combining New Wave pop with elements of smooth jazz, soul, and world music, resulting in an elegant listening style."
@@Diva369 So cool! I hadn't heard that tag before...but you named several bands I love, like Roxy Music, Sade and Simply Red. I will have to go hunt down Level 42 since that doesn't ring a bell.
@@Diva369 You figured out how to copy and paste. Congratulations!!
Loved the Jumpin' Jive album. Saw him perform this live. Brilliant.
MTV at its highest!!! Joe had a great sound!!
it is kinda weird to me that jay didn't innately groove to the bright sound and thumping beat - i feel like i just can't help myself 💃
I remember when this came out, it was so different than his previous releases but it was one of the best albums of that time. Mine was on vinyl and I wore that sucker out and bought the CD later on.
My sister had that album. I would borrow it when she was out. Not as much as Brilliant Trees by David Sylvian but still a fair amount.
Ditto!!
This is an incredibly 80's driven sound. The keys and the bass are distinctive and the groove is perfect. It has a groove that gets you moving, as Amber is doing throughout. But have no doubt this is an early 80's classic.
I love the unique sound of this one. Please listen to "Is She Really Going Out With Him"
Meh.
I took this song mostly for granted back then (it was EVERYWHERE), but these days it's one of my favorites. I also remember him playing this on SNL that year.
ALL TIME FAV Joe Jackson song. Melodious mastery, great beat, relatable lyrics. Perfect!
Joe did it all. His Jumping Jive album was so unexpected, but appreciated. Try You Can't Get What You Want, that a more modern feel!
Oh I love that song!
Just love me some Joe Jackson. I remember spinning this tune back in the day and it's still one of my favorites. I'm the Man, Look Sharp and so many more great songs in his catalog 🎶🎶🎶
The bass line is simple but incredibly catchy.
It's a killer bass sound
Oooooooh,
that song is pure nostalgia to me now.
I recall listening to it to calm my anxiety when my parents were fighting with each other.
There's an optimistic tone to the song.
It's aged really well.
@lucky leprechaun ✌😊
@@christianman73
I had no idea about that.
I was 12 years old when the song came out.
I found temporary mental sanctuary in the
up tempo rhythm and the high notes of the
innocent xylophone(?) sound that can be heard throughout the song.
Thanks for the clarification on the lyrics.
@@santiagohardy2728 You're welcome. I hear you about finding comfort and sanctuary in this song. When it was released, I was very young and going through a difficult family time too, but like you, I was able to find some solace in wonderful songs such as this one.
@@christianman73 ✌😊👍
Joe Jackson has two main styles: his more jazzy pop stuff like this, and his rawer punkish sounding early stuff. Check out "Got The Time" or "I'm The Man", I bet you will have a hard time believing it is the same guy!
Night and Day is a MASTERPIECE, of an album. Between Steppin' Out, Breaking Us In Two, Real Mean and A Slow Song, it's simply unstoppable. Not to mention one of the best albums of the 1980's. Highest recommendation.
@@bradleypaulus2926 Damn right friend
This and Fagen’s The Nightfly came out about the same time in 82. I was mesmerized by those two records! Completely opened up my musical horizons! I was 13.
I love that album
This song has an absolute killer Bass riff.
You can recognize the song immediately from the Bass riff.
“Breaking Us in Two” is my Joe Jackson favorite !
This is a really great song. Grew up with it, didn't think I liked it much as a kid, but absolutely love it now.
One of my favorite all time artists. So underrated!!! ✨
Joe is an absolute musical genius, all of his albums, and there's plenty, are completely different. Big world is amazing, laughter and lust is crazy good.
J, YES the look sharp album is for you
I've been a fan for decades. One of my favorites is - You Can't Always Get What You Want, Till You Know What You Want.
My favorite aspect of this video is how even in his fantasy, in the new York dream, joe Jackson is still a piano player, just in a slightly nicer place. Talk about well adjusted.
Edit:
The cadence or tempo of the song is the pulse of the city, the heartbeat of new York.
Yes, some do not comprehend the brilliance of the music arrangement.. But it is, in fact, a WHOLE vibe.
Even my Dad loved this song! It's so catchy.
Mike Harris, you nailed it.
She has an innate ability to analyze music.
Breaking us in two... the piano makes this song powerful. Jay will love You Can't Get What You Want.
"It's different for Girls" and "Is She really going out with him" are arguably his 2 best tracks
YAASSSSSS!!!
It's a trio with this one
Are you forgetting Can't get what you want till you know what you want?
You don't have to like everything. I personally love it, but it takes me back. It was on the radio all the time when I was a kid, and it's bright and happy. I love the piano in it. And the lyrics are phenomenal.
Love, love, love this. Such a magical and nostalgic vibe. One of those songs that takes me back to my childhood in the 80's.
100% ❤❤❤
I cannot believe Jay doesn’t love this!
I thought he would. Wow!
This was the 1982 vibe.❤
I know! I love this song. I'm perplexed at what he didn't like about it. If course, he's allowed to not like songs. But I wonder what it was about it that he didn't like bc this song is pure 80's to me. 🙌
I thought he'd like it for the piano.
@K He probably didn't like it because it didn't have synthesizers and drum machines which was typical '80s. It had to be a shock to hear real instruments.
Then again he didn't get rock lobster either. You had to live the 80s. I turned 16 in 1980. Married in 88. The best decade ever.
@@alpha1481 you are only a year older than me. It was the best decade of my life.
This is a great song and the sound was groundbreaking when it came out. He has some songs with very interesting lyrics. Top pianist too.
He has so many great songs. So underrated, especially in this generation.
I think you'd fall in love with the lyrics of "Breaking Us In Two".
Good call 👌 One of his best imo
Oh my Jay looks angry😂 such an awesome song!❤
This is an awesome song! An all-time fave. Anybody who doesn’t feel it, I don’t get it. Makes me want to go out.
Love this 80s song and joe jackson hit it out of the park with this song. This was the first song i heard from him and just loved it. The lyrics also hit hard.
Every once in a while, you break my heart, ma dude. I love this tune! 😁
Amber you are amazing in your appreciation of this song...sooths my soul! Thank you.....
More 80s new artist The Romantics singing "What I Like About You" it's gonna make y'all smile
One of the most joyous songs---- ever! Joe's piano?... Flawless!
This song will always remind me of the opening days of MTV as it got heavy air (video) play. Love the swing sounding element of this song.
I appreciate that you guys like this. I've been following Joe since '79.
All time classic!!! Thanks for getting to it!
Wow Jay this IS the 80’s. 1982 - all over MTV. And Joe is the MAN. He does it all pop jazz… Even better live. He’s a musician’s musician.
Joe Jackson is a genius on piano and with his singing like Elvis Costello is with guitar and his voice. I'm such a huge Joe Jackson fan that it's hard to choose, but I do recommend the live version of "A Slow Song'
Love this!!!!! You had to be there Jay! What a wonderful time in history back in the 80s ❤
Stepping Out is one of Joe’s best! The imagery is fabulous. It’s quintessential 80’s. Thanks for the memories! Gonna go to Apple and download this song. 👍🏻
Love Joe Jackson, the music of my youth
One of my favorite songs. The background synth driving in this one. The mellow sound relaxes me.
Like Elvis Costello yesterday Joe started in the late 70's New Wave. They both have evolved over the decades making great music of various genres.
Joe Jackson also did an album called "Jumpin Jive"... a real tip of the hat to the music of the 40s that you might like.
I get where you are coming from on this. I remember growing to like rather than instantly getting Joe Jackson first time around. Agree with comments form some other folks suggesting 'Is She Really Going Out With Him' as a follow up. Great song. Really enjoy the honesty of both of your reactions. Keep on keeping on and thanks.
The Joe Jackson song you're looking for is "I'm the man". Very much power pop gem.
I loved this song, great, great vibes.
This album is a f--Ing masterpiece.
I love this song! Reminds me of better times, with MTV playing actual music videos!
I was very young when I first heard this song… but hearing it again in my 30’s, and 40’s… and now I’m 50… I’ve grown to appreciate it. Give it time sir😊
😂 sometimes Jay can be such a wet blanket
