"Steppin' Out" is a song by British musician Joe Jackson, released in 1982 as the lead single from his album "Night and Day." It became one of Jackson's most successful singles, reaching No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States. The song also performed well internationally, charting in several other countries.
"Steppin' Out" is characterized by its catchy melody, smooth vocals, and a distinctive synthesizer riff. The lyrics reflect a sense of sophistication and urban nightlife, capturing the feeling of going out and experiencing the city at night. The song's upbeat tempo and sleek production contributed to its popularity, making it a staple of 1980s pop music.
Joe Jackson's "Night and Day" album, which includes "Steppin' Out," received critical acclaim and commercial success, earning Jackson a Grammy Award nomination for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male. The album as a whole showcases Jackson's versatility as a songwriter and musician, blending elements of pop, jazz, and new wave music.
Too bad this is all anybody hears from Joe. He had so many amazing tunes. What a voice!
"Is She Really Going Out With Him" and "You Can't Get What You Want" still get airplay. A "Great voice" is one thing he's not guilty of.
@@bossfan49 l can appreciate that. I always thought taste was subjective. I'm sure the taste police will come knocking on my door and force open my earballs and insist that l'm wrong, of course. Kate Bush's The Dreaming was a disaster and Axel Rose sounds nothing like Ethel Merman. My indoctrination begins soon.
@@bossfan49 He's definitely deserving of a deep dive -- lots of great songs.
@@landreaulover He is one of tbe more "sophisticated" songwriters.. like Elvis Costello, Sting...
The most under rated artist of his era.
Check out 'Is She Really Going Out With Him?"
👆🏻
Yes!! They have to listen to that! It’s such a great song.
As a child of the 80s, this song is one of my fav memories
He had a number of songs in the 80s, "Is She Really Going Out With Him". He also recorded an album called Jumping Jive with covers of 1940s swing and jump blues that's terrific!
I've got that album. Its brilliant.
As someone who lived in NYC in 1982 this song is essentialy a 1982 Year in Review!!! Salute!!
That's what you call a ''feel good song''...
Joe has a very deep catalogue and is still touring! "I'm The Man" is fantastic!
"Look Sharp" is another great Joe Jackson track, but this one's likely his best!
The whole Look Sharp album is great
My dad, who was a country music purist, liked this song. So catchy. Also, saw him pay at Six Flags Great Adventure NJ n 1979 and he was amazing.
Joe Jackson, an amazing talent, and one of the folks I never got to see live, but really wanted to. His other major hit was "Is She Really Going Out With Him", another fun satiric tune. This song always strikes me as "Very Urban".
This album Night & Day and the follow up , Body & Soul were big in the States. Body & Soul had a great cover , it was an homage to the classic blue note jazz album covers. The song , You can't get what you want , was a big hit.
I was in NYC when this song was popular. It's So New York City vibe!!!🎹🎹🎹🎹🍎🍎🍎🍎
So many great songs that I’ve forgotten. Thanks for jogging my old memory.
the album this is from, NIGHT AND DAY, is excellent! instead of a & b, the album was listed as night side and day side, each side's songs representing their respective vibes, day or night. "breaking us in two" was my other favourite from this LP and the album design was fabulous too.
saw joe on the tour for this in '83, outdoors at an ampitheater under a moonlit sky - it was MAGICAL and he put on a fantastic show ❤
talented man, plays guitar, piano, sax and writes all the music and lyrics. This was a bit more radio friendly from his usual .
Great song. You should check out this one from him as well "You Can't Get What You Want (Till You Know What You Want)".
I still listen to this one all the time
There’s a great live version on RUclips of that song with Joe Jackson on saxophone.
The video is so reminiscent of the times and i love it. The song brings back a lot of good memories. Great tune.
Video was a love letter to NYC. Remember loving this the first time I saw it on MTV when visiting a friend from college. MTV wasn't in my town yet.
I played this constantly. I still love it.
checkout "you can't get what you want, until you know what you want" the groove is unreal
Joe is so cool. Lots of great songs.
I love this song, great bass line and I especially love to listen to it while driving. Brings back great memories to this Gen Xer.
Joe Jackson has some great tunes. Definitely a bit of jazz mixed in the sound. Jumping Jive is a fun tune by him. Got the Time is another one that is also done by Anthrax. Really fun band.
Positivity supreme!
Joe Jackson is a genius, as is Edwyn Collins from Orange Juice. Great songwriters. Oh and Nick from Haircut 100 also! Paddy MacAloon!! GREEN GARSIDE!! CHAZ JANKEL!! YESSSSS!!
Yeh, just starting work in the early 80's these were my people..
This song ALWAYS gets me in the mood to just let loose and not worry about life. Im happy yall reacted to this😊
Saw Joe at a small venue in Detroit when he toured this album.
I like all your takes on this video, made me smile. Great song too.
It wasn't until the 2010s that I revisited this song and realized how much more there is to it than the hook.
Joe put out some great albums. Always liked his music. Thanks.
Great song. I bought the album because of it. I wasn't disappointed.
It’s a great album!
Another K-tel record hit. I had this on a tape with A Flock of Seagulls - I Ran (So Far)
I had a K-Tel cassette from '83 called Hot Tracks. Styx, Billy Idol , Chris De Burgh, Wall of Voodoo, Michael Sambello, Rick Springfield, Eurythmics, The Police, Def Leppard, Naked Eyes, Bryan Adams, The Animals, Shalamar, Patrick Simmons (from The Doobie Bros)
He's got another classic from a few years prior, "Is She Really Going Out With Him?"
This song to me brings all the hype energy and anticipation of rolling with your partner/situation/date for a night out in the city.
That whole album (Night and Day) by Joe is brilliant with every track a banger.
Yet ANOTHER Brit.
Joe had 2 other hits "Is She Really Going Out With Him" (1979) and "You Can't Get What You Want" (1984)
The bass player in his band is always a standout. Jackson’s Look Sharp album is an excellent example of New Wave
Graham Maby fan club member.
A fantastic "mood" song, with a hook of a melody created by a glockenspiel.
Funny you guys mention the two Joe Jacksons (Father of Michael, Tito, Janet etc), as there is a white singer from the UK named Michael Jackson (though he later went by Mick) that originally wrote and performed "Blame it on the Boogie" before The Jacksons used it. You should check it out, as his original version is slower and sounds similar to Stevie Wonder's "Sir Duke."
I didn't know about him or the song, but that's interesting.
I'm so glad I found this channel. Try " You Can't Get What You Want( Til You Know What You Want) & "Breaking Us in Two" This man is a genius❤
Awesomeness. Thank you
Great reaction guys. When this came out that heavy keyboard base was unique and was hitting hard.
What a great song it was different from the other 80,s songs. That’s why I like it so much
A great artist! Love you guys! 😂
His later album "RAIN" was a bloody ripper too.
Joe Jackson was (and still is) eclectic af. From punk to pop to jazz to be-bop to classical music. Helluva career if mostly gone unnoticed.
Love your channel. Hope you get lots of subscribers. You deserve it. You are slowly and steadily increasing.
Much love!!!
Just like driving a convertible cruising along the coast to your favorite beach after sunset.
Great tune
For higher quality audio find a studio version instead of the video version. Early eighties videos tend towards muffled audio and Joe Jackson's music deserves high fidelity playback because his instrumentals are always top notch. When you're ready for another taste of his music, check out some of these tunes -- "Is She Really Going Out with Him?", "Look Sharp!", "Got the Time", "It's Different For Girls", "Fools in Love", "Sunday Papers", "On Your Radio", "I'm the Man", "Beat Crazy" ...
Nice - very early 80’s - needs to be remastered 😊
I had this on a mix tape for years; such a beautiful song!! Lots of great Joe Jackson tunes.
"Right and Wrong" "Is She Really Going Out With Him?" "Jet Set" "Forty Years" "Jumpin' Jive" "Breaking Us In Two" "Look Sharp"
my jam :)))))))))
JJ super talent
React Christopher Cross - "Sailling"
Smooth😊
Great song; Joe Jackson is a very talented songwriter, composer and performer. The jazz influence to his songs is what really sets him apart from other rock/pop artists. Y'all should check out Is She Really Going Out with Him?, Breaking Us in Two and You Can't Get What You Want (Till You Know What You Want); they were all big hits and are excellent songs.
This song makes me feel like walking around a Montgomery Ward
Montgomery Ward?????? Man that is a throwback store right there!
Definitely NYC before its fall. Before 911 too.I love this song and I always think of the once great city it revolves around.
love this song, i did a breakbeat remix of this last year!
Watched this a hundred times in the 80s, loved it! Unlike most 80s videos, it told a story. A later Joe Jackson favorite is "Home Town" - from after I moved from a small town to the city... Home Town by Joe Jackson - Yup, it's never the same.... Lyrics: "Of all the stupid things
I could have thought
This was the worst
I started to believe
That I was born at seventeen
And all the stupid things
The letters and the broken verse
Stayed hidden at the bottom of the drawer
They'd always been
And now, I plough through piles
Of bills, receipts, and credit cards
And tickets, and the daily news
And sometimes I just
Wanna go back to my hometown
Though I know it'll never be the same
Back to my hometown
'Cause it's been so long
And I'm wondering if it's still there
We think we're pretty smart
Us city slickers get around
And when the going's rough
We kill the pain and relocate
We're never married
Never faithful not to any town
But we never leave the past behind
We just accumulate
So, sometimes when the music stops
I seem to hear a distant sound
Of waves and seagulls
Football crowds, and church bells
And I
Wanna go back to my hometown
Though I know it'll never be the same
Back to my hometown
'Cause it's been so long
And I'm wondering if it's still there
Back to my hometown
Though I know it'll never be the same
Back to my hometown
'Cause it's been so long
And I'm wondering if it's still there
Totally an 80’s song
‘Sunday Papers’ is another good song of his you should check out.
If "Joe Jackson" (patriarch of the Jackson 5) wasn't "doin' right by those kids", guess who else wasn't? I'll give a hint: Neverland.
The Cat is so underrated and is just pure gold! Great reaction and loved every second of your great inputs! First time here. Looking forward to more. Thnx. Btw, this song was a hit, but JJ is far more than this groove.
BAck in the days when you didn't have to be a GQ model to be a pop star, LOL. One of my favorites!
Joe's first album Look Sharp is a bass ass from 1st song to the last. Punk with heavy reggae influence. AMust lister
I looooove this song!!!!😊
I think you would flip over Bruce Hornsby’s “ The Way It Is” . He’s a piano genius and has played with many artists including own band.
It’s probably one of the biggest sample providers around- I won’t say who it is but you will recognize it immediately! ❤ Both hits deal with racism and prejudice.
Joe da man!
DDA is freaking hilarious
I'm the man and Different for Girls are must listens.
Okay y’all this was one of my songs 😊
I'd love to see y'all's reaction to my favorite song from the 80's How Soon In Now? by the Smiths
checkin in...
7:51 - Have you ever played Grand Theft Auto (Vice City)? You might've heard it from there. Y'all should hear his song, "Got The Time", which Anthrax made popular. Check out the original and the cover.
Anthrax covered one of his songs - Got The Time.
This song has been sampled a few times, so you may have recognized the tune from the sample or the original.
Listen to time on the look sharp album ,might be the best drumming ever in a rock song .People who know -know
It's different for girls is a good song of his.
You do all know that Joe Is an Englishman? Just thought I'd mention it 🇬🇧
Oh man, I used to have to sing this song when I was with a band playing a Marriott Hotel circuit. I mean, I can carry a tune, but I do not like the sound of my own voice. I hated doing that, lol. Great song though. The stuff on his Jumpin' Jive album is really interesting. I think he recorded that one in honor of his dad. It was stuff his dad was into, it's pretty cool.
Joe Jackson has a BUNCH of great tunes on a bunch of great albums - never went with the flow of the times - uniquely himself
TUNE
If you like the jazzy side of Joe- try Everything Gives You Cancer. Know it’s a strange title but the song is great.
Lol, he's not "supposedly" from the UK, he *IS* from the UK! 🤣
When I started listening to radio all day long, I heard this at least 7-8 times a day on different stations in NYC
Also, you fellas should check out EIGHTEEN WITH A BULLET. By Pete Wingfield. It came out way back in the early Seventies, but it was a throwback to the Fifties. It's a genuinely excellent song but the thing is... Pete Wingfield is a white British dude and to this day I can't tell if he was just taking the piss (being an outright racist making fun of black folks doo-wop music) or if he was paying authentic homage. Y'all be the judge.
ACDC LET THERE BE ROCK LIVE AT RIVER PLATE
Don't eat yellow snow
There was another English fellow named Michael Jackson..who went by Mick Jackson- he wrote and originally recorded "Blame it On The Boogie" that became a hit for the Jackson 5.

React to C'est La Vie by Robbie Nevil, and TS Monk Bon Bon Vie
STONES "CAN'T YA HEAR ME KNOCKIN'?" VERY DIFFERENT FOR STONES USUAL FARE.👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Not one of his super biggest hits, but try "look sharp".
Is she really going out with him was a better song in my opinion.
It’s catchy, but it’s the same chords played over and over. Not a lot of substance.
Huh?
Night and day double album 👌
For this to lose Grammy's to Africa by Toto was robbery.
I totally get it if you're tired of hearing "Africa"...but it is the better song.
Nah.
hes a jazz pianist ....
It's about time someone reacted to Joe Jackson. Try his earlier stuff you won't be disappointed. Thanks guys. Keep up the good work!
Check out any song from the terrific debut album "Look Sharp."
Can't go wrong with any song on that album...great suggestion!!!
@@allanjones1680 Thanks!
Fellas, please check out Fools In Love! You’ll thank me later.🖖🏼
This song just makes you feel good and without sounding dated it definitely transports you back to 1982!!
“You Can’t Get What You Want” - is amazing! I think you’d love it. Also off this album Night & Day - Cancer (yes it’s the name of the song!) is humorous and a beautiful Latin jazz inspired piece & Breaking Us in Two.
