I read an interview with Joe Jackson (who is from England) where Joe said, "Americans have the greatest music in the world -- jazz -- right under their noses -- and they don't even realize it."
The video tells a dual Cinderella story- the maid imagining Steppin' Out, and even Joe as the male counterpart. And I don't care, he's just badass good.
When this video was in heavy rotation on MTV in 1983 I was literally sleeping on a barroom floor. By a crazy stroke of luck some friends dropped me off at a bar I never would have gone to. Sitting at the bar was the most beautiful woman I'd ever seen. We ended up shooting pool then leaving together and the story began. I didn't have two nickels to rub together, but she saw something in me. I'd watch this video and fantasize about taking her out and showing her the night she deserved. Lots of stuff happened between then and now. We never stopped loving each other and never lost touch. Finally the stars aligned and I was going to move south so we could do the things we'd talked about doing. I came down for my interview the same week she was being diagnosed with cancer. I moved to FL in time to support her through her illness. She's been gone over four years now. Thanks for doing this song Jamel.
Joe Jackson had so many great songs,, Is She Really Goin Out With Him, Real Men, I'm The Man etc etc. Seriously anything off his first two albums is gold.

I am retired and work at a Lowes in Southern California. I am almost 60 years old. This song came on the other day and the youngsters were saying, "Damn, that new song is on again!" I told them it came just after I got out of high school. They couldn't believe it was so old.
This is one of those forgotten gems! This song was released in August, 1982. The music video was recorded around the same time. It was shot in one night at the St. Regis Hotel in New York. I was 11 years old when the single was released. I actually thought recently the housekeeper was portrayed by a young Julia Roberts. I'm wrong. Steppin' Out had a different meaning back then. It meant just going out and having fun and enjoying yourself. I must admit I've done karaoke on this song with a shipmate from Great Britain. I was stocked to see people actually dancing to this song at the bar we was at.
Sometimes a song makes you dash to the record store to purchase the album. Thats what happened with "Steppin' Out" back in 1982. It also happened in 1985 with Simply Red's "Holding Back the Years". Even at age 70 I'm moving my shoulders like you Jamal! Keep on truckin".
DroverChicago True! I discovered this song only like 2 years ago. It’s wonderful! I have it in my “night time drive” playlist because it’s so calming in a fun way. Love the lyrics too.
I always found it funny that it didn't get a lot of radio airplay, but I remember it being in heavy rotation on MTV. You know, back when they played music videos? 😉
This song captures some magic that words can’t add to, and you Jamel are getting it. Joe Jackson’s pinnacle at least as far as pop releases. Emotion and and a beat.
I never would have expected a reaction to this song on RUclips - especially not these days. I'm even surprised people remember it & have even recommended it. In its day, it seemed to me like a song that many were likely aware of, but maybe they didn't know they were aware of it. You'd probably hear it in restaurants, elevators, and malls, but you probably wouldn't find that many that would wear Joe Jackson T-shirts, or sing it aloud, when it was on the radio. It was catchy in a different way, than something like "Our House". Still, I think it's a hidden gem, for those that find it, remember it, or have rediscovered it. A good companion to this is the song "Breaking us in Two", which also happened to make it to MTV in video form. I am glad to find out that other people have remembered this song.
I have always loved this song since it first came out when I was 13. I was the only one I know of that listened to it! Joe Jackson is so underrated it’s almost criminal

I was a kid in the 80’s when this came out. My memory is going with my parents and sister to my Big Granny’s house and this song came on in the car. I was probably 8-9 years old.
This 80's music goes straight into my soul and makes me feel like ran into my first love and was left speechless at the very sight of it, you just made my day with this reaction. Please react to "Head Over Heels" by Tears For Fears, the true meaning of 80's music is in them or can also react to "It's my life" by Talk Talk, Mark Holis' legacy, of course there's more from him but this one is a good, awesome start.
I remember my mom driving us into los Angeles every morning as the sun was just coming up, to drop my step dad off at Paramount studios where he worked. This song was always playing as we drove on the 405.
Yes! Such a groove and I love that you dig it. Night and Day was my second album created by the skills of a song smith, Joe Jackson. Album, Night and Day, created in 1982, you're right man. Listen to Another World from the same album. Also listen to the album, Body and Soul. Produced in 1984 - sheer drama and artistry. And definitely groove. You will want to listen again and again. Thanks for your review Jamel. I knew I wasn't the only one to feel that sense of elation upon enjoying Joe's music. And I did need to be reminded of that epiphany of hearing for the first time. You brought it back again for me!
I was a teenager when this was released, and remember this video from MTV. I always liked the song, but I have come to appreciate it more as I grow older. The whole "getting old before our time" going along with the man & woman in the video dreaming of the life they wish they could have...it resonates. I love the driving rhythm & piano, too.
Love your enthusiasm towards the different styles of music we grew up with. Even us hard rockers appreciated the talent and writing of a lot of 70's & 80's artists. We could go from Aerosmith to Ambrosia or Zeppelin to Box Scaggs. Talent is Talent. Keep doing what you do, we love it.
Good call. Joe Jackson definitely learned a thing or two from Elvis. I'd also suggest Everyday I Write the Book, Alison, Pump it Up, Radio Radio, Accidents Will Happen, Ship Building, Indoor Fireworks...so many great Costello tunes.
Hey Jamal; So glad you got hip to Joe Jackson and his incredible music. The guy was a renaissance man. Song writing, arranging, playing and singing Joe J. could, and did, do it all. Love your reaction channel.

@@kozmikslop9663 I never know names of artists but Breaking Us In Two was great. I'm just learning it was Joe.
Jumpin' Jive is a great track.
This is one of the most 80s sounding songs ever.
It’s perfect.
Bass player gets a workout in this one! Check out "Is She Really Going Out With Him?" and "Breaking Us in Two"
.... and 'Sunday Papers'. I warm up with my Bass to that. 🤗🐰 #ENRGYZRBunny
"One more time" is a good one also
@@vinniecella4786 say your leaving! 🙄 can't hear the phrase 1 more time without immediately shouting that! 🤣😂🤣😂🐰 #ENRGYZRBunny
Good to know of you , the same way i felt then when i heard this great wonderful song. Yes , it captures a time when good times of work and going out/ hanging out where good and simple. You could even feel the time of summer in that video. Oooh yes teleport to that time/ moment would BE FUN☝🙏⚡🌏🌎🌍😘🍻🍸😉
Cheers brother from Ed of Brooklyn,N.Y. THANKS FOR YOUR TIME YOUR CHANNEL YOUR FRIENDSHIP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Night And Day, this whole album is one of my favorites of all time. It's just one of those magical records. His SNL performances from these era are top notch.
"how many got dressed to this song?" Guilty as charged. I was in college when this came out.
No guilt. Just a lot of great times!
😈🌹😈
im 65 so i dont go out so much but i am falling for a guy and the energy is still the same!!!!!! yum!
Eighth grade prom for me. I had this and Swing Out Sister on a mix tape. Fun times!!
Also recommending "Is She Really Going Out With Him?" and "Breakin Us In Two".
This was Spring 1983. I was a freshman at UNC. Loved this song.
This song is my FAVORITE song of the 80's. I know that there are tons of amazing songs from the 80's and I am a huge fan of the music of the 1980's but there's something about this song that brings me back to my childhood and watching MTV in my room and it just hits me in all the feels haha.
It was one of my favorite first songs I ever heard. It is also STILL one of my fav songs ever. I don't know what it is about this song..but I love it.
@@pistachiosandpopcorn7146 Me too!! I was 7 years old when this song came out and I was just instantly in love with it. It still gives me chills when I listen to it haha. I love how music can bring you to places or makes you feel things down to your core. Love it😊
I was a kid in the 80’s when this came out. My memory is going with my parents and sister to my Big Granny’s house and this song came on in the car. I was probably 8-9 years old.
Hit from 1982, love this song.
Criminally underrated masterpiece. This song is a portal to that time and your imagination.
My first memory of this song is when Tony dances with Angela on Who's the Boss?.
"It's My Life" or "Life Is What You Make It."
@@Skorpio420 A LITTLE TOO LATE... but "Living in another wolrd" live version of course
Now we talkin! I saw Joe in San Francisco a few years back. My Buddy was playing bass on the tour.
JJ plays Town Hall in NYC with his Big Band but throws in plenty of his "regular stuff" too! Never miss his NY/NJ shows. 🐰 #ENRGYZRBunny
In a yellow Taxi turn to me and smile, I absolutely love that line.
My favorite song ever . Remember when it first hit the radio! Give me a natural high!!
Love your message Jamel!!
Keep it going !
I’m a fan!
I remember my mom driving us into los Angeles every morning as the sun was just coming up, to drop my step dad off at Paramount studios where he worked. This song was always playing as we drove on the 405.
What a song to drive to...👍🏾
Nostalgia is magical🤩
The shimmery sounds just carry me away on a cloud of nostalgia.
Beautifully said. Same ✨✨
God, I love this song!! I liked it when I was 13, and even more so [mumble mumble] years later.
Nice to see you doing some Joe Jackson - a prolific, talented artist. Many, many great songs.
Keep doing what you do, we love it.
thing about Joe Jackson, every CD is a different genre, country, jazz, dance, rock, blues, etc
Yep! He chased pop success for a while then said "screw it...I'm gonna de whatever I feel inspired to do!"
His hip hop album slays!
Dude. Love the energy you brought in at the beginning 😎😎😎
I remember this awesome uplifting Jam!! I’m still Steppin Out into the light in 2021 !!
Nothing ever sounded more 80’s than that- synthesizer and drum machine
Haven't heard this song in a little while, but I love him. Had this CD.
Sandra, go get it again.. x
Enjoyed this video..I recommend Elvis Costello-Watching The Detectives
Good call. Joe Jackson definitely learned a thing or two from Elvis. I'd also suggest Everyday I Write the Book, Alison, Pump it Up, Radio Radio, Accidents Will Happen, Ship Building, Indoor Fireworks...so many great Costello tunes.
Also Everyday I Write The Book, Pump It Up, Alison...so many good tunes...
Or, as we in the retail record biz back in the day used to call it: "Washing the Defectives"!
@@rachel-in-the-208 that song was written for his grandmother, if memory serves.
@@rachel-in-the-208 Cool! Elvis Costello is one of our great artists.
Love your reaction. This was and still is, an amazing song that hits you in the feels.
Love this song & the way it makes me feel so much. I long for the happier & simpler times of the 80s (and 90s) when I was growing up. 💕
This was my ish back in 84'
My fave JJ is 'Different for Girls' - I think you'd love it.
The 80s was a more innocent time, "steppin out" was just going out on the town.
Thank you Jamal...one of my favorite songs ever. Early MTV music video.....so smooth....great video...early eighties
Hey Jamal; So glad you got hip to Joe Jackson and his incredible music. The guy was a renaissance man. Song writing, arranging, playing and singing Joe J. could, and did, do it all. Love your reaction channel.
“Music Unites” great quote brother
Amen!!
"Breaking us in two" needs to be your next JJ song.
Absolutely!
Came here to say this!
Breaking us in two--that is a SERIOUS slow jam!
Never heard it but thanks to you I'm gonna give this a listen
@@SBzKillFrenzy It's probably my favorite song of his. Please come back and let us know what you thought! :)
"How many of y'all listened to this getting dressed to go out?" My dude, I danced to this at middle school dances the year it came out. 😄
I forgot how much I LOVE this song! Thanks for the boost I needed this AM!
I LOVE watching your reaction as you enjoy the videos. You are MY NEW FAVORITE person to reminisce with to these great songs. I dig the shirt too.
If you're going to continue with Joe Jackson, try "A Slow Song", "Beat Crazy", "Breaking Us In Two."
"It's Different for Girls" is the Joe Jackson song I'd really like to hear you react to.
Me too!
So good. Try "It's Different for Girls". You can't go wrong with Joe. So many good songs.
One of the greatest songs of my teen years!
Have no words to say how much I love that you love this...... Joe Jackson’s music was EVERYTHING for me then.... 1978?....1979? Don’t know exactly when, but he is GREAT. THANK YOU JamEl/Al. You’re the best. Maybe check out Joe Jackson: it’s different for girls, breaking us in two.... so many more.
Cool Joe Jackson, haven't hear this in years
It's funny you say that I was driving last Saturday and the 80s show was on and they played this. I was thinking "haven't heard this in years." And then this!
