Ginger Baker was an incredibly musical drummer with a signature sound and style. Great time, feel and technique with an African approach to rhythm. Examples are: his drumming on the Cream song “Crossroads” and Blind Faith song “Can’t Find My Way Home,” where he provides perfect contrapuntal accompaniment and impressively tasteful use of the drum kit. One of my favorite drummers of all time.
Complexity can interfere with the message you're trying to convey. And drugs are an impediment to clear ideas. Drums keep the beat. That means 1&3 are clearly defined, and you can't play "over the heads" of the listener.
@G8GT364CI I was a fan while they were still playing together, I was a fan when they broke up, don't listen to "hard rock" that much anymore. But his attitude especially later on, arrogant, rude, carried into his music after Cream. The music after didn't catch on like before. It was hard to listen to, a tune or two, and done. He wrote songs while in Cream, we moved the needle to the next proper tune. I think he regretted being an S in Cream, resented Clapton Bruce later acceptance.
This video has NOTHING to do with Eric! I saw Ginger a number of times, and met him once, when my band opened for the Graham Bond Organisation. He stood in the wings and closely watched everything I did, then when the curtains closed and stage movers moved our stuff backstage he called me over and was very warm and complimentary, and gave me an armful of signature sticks. Yes he was difficult, sometimes violent, and irascible, but I have good memories of him.

Ginger Baker was fucking crazy. That’s what made him a great drummer. He had problems just like everybody else didn’t know how to handle them. Doesn’t make him a bad guy. He was the greatest drummer of our time the 60s and 70s.
In reality it Ginger & Jack Brue than hit heads all the time & Eric was the one that had to smooth it out best he could & despite Gingers shortcomings he was a force to be reckoned with & he was a survivor of what Rock stardom can bring but he never compromised the music which is one thing that made him great. Baker was a heroin addict through out his history with Cream. He claimed the heroin unleashed his inhibitions and fear while playing. He had a style inspired by primitive African tribe drumming that made him focus more on the twin tom toms instead of the snare drum. This was unlike most modern kit drumming.

Considering ALL the 60's & 70's Bands, Cream WAS always my favorite....Baker rates many drummers as somewhat mediocre, and for the most part he is right......there are guys who go nuts beating the hell out of the trap set, but they are not very good; there are some who can keep good time and maintain good rhythm; but I know of only 2 (TWO) drummers who were the JS Bachs of extraordinary drumming ( not Bonham. ) Baker is one, the other is Krupa..
