Top 3 bands that Ginger Baker hated.
Renowned for his passionate demeanor and strong-willed personality. Ginger Baker was widely considered rock’s first superstar drummer. He was known for his flamboyant playing style that were influenced by jazz, rock, and West African music. His jazz background and interest in African music helped him develop and master a polyrhythmic approach that changed rock drumming. In 1969 Baker joined Clapton, Steve Winwood and Ric Grech to form the supergroup Blind Faith. He played a similarly key role in shaping the more finessed work of one of rock's first supergroups, Blind Faith. The band broke up after a challenging U.S. tour. In 1970 he went on to form his own short-lived group, Ginger Baker’s Air Force. He led bands that linked the flamboyant intensity of rock to the intricate polyrhythms of jazz and jazz-rock fusion. He was the first rock-era to seek out and become fluent in the nuances of African drumming - famously collaborating with the Nigerian Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti. He's often credited for bringing the extended drum solo to the fore in rock music. His work in Cream influenced almost every rock drummer that came after him. Known for his strong' opinions, Baker was never shy about sharing his thoughts on other bands. So, let’s dive into the top 3 bands that Ginger Baker hated.

Luckily i saw him play with my favourite band Hawkwind in 1980 on the back of album Levitation. People in the audience were shouting out "Sack Baker". I didn't know much about him or Hawkwinds history. Essentially they were not a good fit but Ginger wanted to create a super group by splitting the band and bringing other musicians in. The band leader Dave Brock, a man often maligned, had the choice to sack the bass player, much lived Harvey Bainbridge or Baker. Dave viewed Harvey as a friend and sacked Baker. Thus began the revolving door of drummers into the band. Hawkwinds ethos did not match Gingers. Ginger was always interested in status and being recognised for his greateness. He is a brilliant drummer and Levitation remains my favourite Hawkwind album. I was 16 when it came out. RIP GB.

For example, I've heard Ginger dissing Hawkwind previously. I have also heard him say that he enjoyed his short tenure with the band. Maybe his opinions were linked to the lunar cycle!! I loved Cream and Blind Faith had their brief moments, but that doesn't make Mr Baker an expert on 50 + years of music!

Ginger seemed completely enamored with every one else in music. Always competing (in his own mind) and always spouting that he was the only good drummer out there. He was always saying he was the best, that everyone else was a joke, as is if it were some sort of soccer game. In his mind he was the only one who deserved any and all the money. But none of his (self made and imaginary) enemies were even competing with him. Must have been a very lonely experience. He seemed like an angry little boy & it’s become all he left this world with: his spite.

There is a difference between jealousy and annoyance. Plenty of musicians are annoyed with the simple taste of the masses.
Imagine a Michelin star level chef seeing many Michelin star level restaurants on a street. Then he sees them go bankrupt because everybody just go to Burger King and McDonalds.
      That's not jealousy its about.

I get a little irritated by how limited
folks are with the musical taste.
    Great bands=great musicians.
They re birds of a feather.
    Black Sabbath and Deep Purple
had Bill Ward and Ian Paice, who
put their distinct touches on the
music the same way that Keith Moon
did for the Who and Bonham with Zep.
Idk why people get so enamoured with
one band and one guy and say that
they re the undisputed best. They are
A cog in the machine-a vital one. A
    musician not liking another musician
because of " undeserved fame " can
rest easy. Look at music these days, lol.
How many are even " real musicians " ?

The commentary saying thatHawkwind were the only band Baker brutally destroyed is bollocks. They continued in better heart the moment Harvey sacked him. The man was an utter shit of the first water. His ego went so far as him putting in his god-awful 'Toad' drum solo in the middle of 'Brainstorm', one of Hawkwind's great tracks' during the 1980 Autumn tour. At two venues, Hanley and Hull, he was booed so loudly he heard it over his self indulgence and he was forced to cut it short at Hull. A thoroughly nasty man - his grotesque behaviour trumps any kind of "musical genius". And that's a joke too.

Bro I’ve heard dozens of drummers being praised long before Ginger is mentioned. And Keith Moon was arguably the first super drummer, he was in The Who for 2 years before Cream was formed. He was soloing in 65 on his small kit. The Who weren’t popular at all until after Tommy in mid 1969. And Keith might have been the most kindest drummer of his time, with The Beach Boys being of his favorites during their Surf era, If Keith had the choice he would have actually left The Who at their peak of Who’s Next tour in 1971 to play with The Beach Boys while Dennis had a hand injury. He also had formed a friendship with Ringo and perhaps Paul McCartney too, and was a Beatles fan during the early 60s.
Cream is good and all but Ginger can’t hold a candle to Keith in his prime.
BTW, lots of band that played Blues/Hard Rock in the late 60s seemed to hate Led Zeppelin. Pete Townshend and Jimi Hendrix did as well. They were all purely jealous as Zeppelin’s first 2 records pretty much set the blueprint for 70s Rock, Led Zeppelin we’re at their ultimate peak in 1969, no one touched them at that time, aside from The Beatles Abbey Road. And yeah Bonham can too drum circles around Ginger and I’m not even the biggest Zeppelin fan, especially after their first 2 albums.
Ginger purely just proved himself to be an asshole that by saying he is the best just because he was classically trained. I honestly think it’s more impressive to not be classically trained and still write masterpieces like The Beatles and others. Ginger has not aside from being the drummer of Cream

    • @Salopian_mumbles
      @Salopian_mumbles 22 дня назад +1

He didn't have a grudge with Cream, his grudge was with Jack Bruce and it started well before Cream when they played in the Graham Bond organisation. Cream was Gingers idea and he asked Eric Clapton to join the band who said he would but on the condition that Jack Bruce is the bass player. Ginger reluctantly agreed to ask Jack to join and Jack has said in interviews how shocked he was that Ginger asked him to join his band; given their history.
Cream played a mixture of blues covers and original material that was mostly written by Jack Bruce and Pete Brown who wrote lyrics, Eric Clapton contributed on a couple of records but most of the original stuff was Bruce/Brown so most of the money the band made in royalties went to Jack Bruce and Pete Brown. Ginger did contribute massively on how the songs were arranged and he would change the time signature and rearrange it as Jack wrote everything in straight 4:4 time and if you heard the music played the way Jack composed it in 4:4 time; it would be a completely different sound. Ginger was a genius of "time" and without his input Creams sound would not be the huge heavy swinging pendulum which we know and love.
The point I'm leading upto is that although Gingers Input on many Cream records was significant, song writing credits are generally split between the person who wrote the melody and the people who wrote the lyrics, Gingers input is technically regarded as arrangement which doesn't get credited for royalties. This is what Ginger isn't happy about as Cream was his band and his input was vast but he's earned pittance for his influence and Pete Brown earned shedloads for writing lyrics and Jack Bruce earning huge royalties on songs that Ginger helped create.

Baker, Pete Townsend, Keith Richards,Ray Davies all hated Led Zeppelin. The reason I think is jealousy since it was Zep who truly nailed that Hard Rock sound that would become the blueprint for every hard rock/heavy metal band that came after.

I think he was a good drummer. He had alot of swing but no Funk whatsoever. That's something i look for in a drummer. I think he would last five minutes MAX with James Brown but i can totally hear Bonham or Mitch Mitchell bring up the Funk. I actually think Cream was better in the studio. Those long jams get tedious to me after awhile.

Ginger has this reputation for being a misanthrope but he just had strong opinions about music. If you think about those opinions he does have a point. Bonham was a technical monster but he wasn't 1/2 the musician that Baker was. Zeppelin's actual song writing was pretty suspect even though they had an original sound. Also the Stones have a few good songs but they aren't really better than a lot of bands that didn't get any recognition. I think it bothered Baker that the public often responded to image over music.

The guy started as a free form jazz player who was mentored by one of the best jazz drummers Phil Seamen. Made his transition to rock and was one of the first drummers to incorporate double bass to rock. Then later when living in Africa joined Fela Kuti playing afro beat. @@jlobiafra Multiple styles? Could he play bebop ,? That’s a style. Baker played just fine in the rock world, but he would have been lost playing with bird, or Miles, or Trane, and yes you’re right he was a jerk. I once met Buddy Rich in a music shop many years ago and he was another real jerk. He asked me what records that I was looking for as I was going through the albums, and I said that I was looking for any Billy Cobham albums and his reply was, he’s ok if you like Tonka toys and walked away. He could play like Cobham if he had two more sets of hands and feet. He was a nasty guy, and I will never forget that day.
