This is one of Kansas' great tunes IMHO. It's exhilarating to listen to, especially the outro (the live version is even better). They're such an awesome combination of hard rock and symphonic arrangements.
Sad that the last 20 years of music can't even come close to the talent level of musicianship on display here. Down The Road, Mysteries and Mayhem or Spider/Portrait(He Knew) to name a few.
I first heard Kansas as a 10-year-old black kid way back in 1976. The experience blew me away and opened up a whole world of musical possibilities I'd never even considered. I'm so glad you guys are listening to them and picking deeper cuts that other reactors don't. The unique thing about Kansas was they were trained musicians who were equally in love with British prog and American rock and boogie rock. Their songs span the full range of those idioms, and also throw in other influences as well. In other words, there is no such thing as a quintessential Kansas song. There are, however, a ton of fantastic tunes. If you want to check them out in full-on boogie mode, I'd recommend a song called "Bringing It Back" from their first album. My favorite of their prog work is a two-part song called "Mysteries and Mayhem/The Pinnacle." It was originally meant to be a single track, but the record company made them split it.
Wow this is great , all the Kansas fans coming out of the woodwork. Been a fan since 12 years old 1978 and saw them three times. All the two for the show live album is great
Icarus is one of the most perfect Progressive Rock songs ever composed. This is the song that got me seriously into Kansas in 1975 as a 15 year old. I had heard Song for America a few times, but this song was a minor FM radio hit and it just connected with me. The musicianship is just off the charts. They were harder than Yes, ELO and Supertramp but somewhat similar in sounds. Closest to Genesis and ELP in many ways. The violin is what set them apart. A year later they would come out with Carry On My Wayward Son which became a smash hit. But this album MASQUE was killer. Listen to Mysteries and Mayhem and let it bleed into the finale of the album, THE PINNACLE. Epic awesome Progressive Rock. Kansas was the BEST and most successful American Progressive Rock band
Masque is my all time favorite album from any band. I first time I saw them was Feb, 77 in a 3K theater with really good acoustics. I had a friend who played SFA on his car 8 track. They were different and I didn’t like them to much at first, but something happened I don’t know when and I couldn’t get enough. Then Masque came out and it was Gold, a Masterpiece. The songs like Icarus, The Pinnacle were in another category, the vocals were again Off The Charts, like nothing I had ever heard before. To this day I’ve been to many Kansas concerts, I’m going again in Sept to the 50 year fork in the road. I was there for the 77 Leftoverture still the best one, also was at the 40 year one. RiP Robbie ❤️🙏🎻
@lefty5757 I remember seeing then live on Don Kirshners Rock Concert in 1975 late one Saturday night. I was blown away. Fan from then on. Masque came out in 1975. I have seen Kansas at least 20 times, starting in 78. In big arenas, in small theaters, at County Fairs, State Fairs, County Parks, Ribfests for free, and at their lowest point, at a small club/bar in a suburban strip mall in front of a couple hundred people at most. I also went to the 40th Anniversary Tours of Leftoverture and Point of Know Return, plus this most recent 50th Anniversary Tour. While it's not the same as seeing the original classic band back in the 70s of course, this version of Kansas puts on a great show and does a heckuva job staying true to the music. The new keyboard player Tom Brislin is a great addition with his progressive background and plays the Livgren synth runs great.
Love this song and this band. With the exception of “Carry On Wayward Son” this band’s best music were not ‘radio hits’. This can be said for many bands of the 70’s when record companies would push for singles that were radio friendly and typically 3 minute songs with catchy hooks. Kansas was a phenomenal band live and they made some great albums and music.
I've seen Kansas at least 10 times in concert, so many times I can't remember. Two for the Show is one of the first albums I bought and one of the best live albums in rock.
I've seen them over 20 times! Lost count. From County Fairs and free Ribfests to filled Hockey Arenas, Theaters and even a small strip mall bar in the early 90s. Love em.
Icarus was the son of Daedalus, the man who designed the Maze on the island of Crete where the halfbull-halfman Minotaur lived. Daedalus designed wings for himself and his son so that they could escape the island..but Icarus flew too close to the Sun, it melted the wax holding his feathers to his wings and he plunged from the sky in to the freezing embrace of the ocean and drowned. Daedalus made it to the mainland.
So glad you got to this album by Kansas. This one helped turn the corner for them as the one and only Prog band from the USA. Before moving on to their masterpiece of an album ( Leftoverture ) I suggest the Mysteries and Mayhem right into The Pinacle from this same album. I guarantee you will be blown away!!! Keep it up fellows!!!
Hands down one of my favorite songs from this band. I've seen them live several times. Thanks for playing it. Miracles out of nowhere is another great prog song.❤
With music like this I did not mind at all when my parents grounded me . I stayed in my room with headphones on and just jammed ! Hold on , by them , deserves some consideration . you guys have QUICKLY become favorites of mine . much respect
Man, this is a fantastic song! I read that Kerry Livgren wrote this to honor his father, who was a WWII pilot. Some other prog "Kansas" songs I recommend are: "Song for America", "The Wall", "Miracles Out of Nowhere", and "Lamplight Symphony".
If you REALLY want to find out how great Kansas is as a band, listen to anything off "Two for the Show", their live album from 1978... Arguably one of the best live albums of that period.
Kansas yes! One of the Premier Prog-Rock/Progressive Bands from the 70's Era! Incredible musicians, and a band that could give Rush a run for their money on transitions! I humbly recommend you dive into the Album "Leftoverture". I won this Album from a radio station in 1976 right after their hit song "Carry on" hit the airwaves, I was 15 at the time and listened to it front to back 100's of times through headphones 🎧. From beginning to end every song is a masterpiece. It's the album that got them noticed by the masses. "Miracles Out of Nowhere" will be enough to send you down the rabbit hole😎 Enjoy my brothers Be good and stay safe...
They are considered the greatest American Progressive Rock band and easily the biggest selling American Progressive Rock Band. For those that know, they know.
I loved Kansas during this early era. They were true Prog Rock at that point in time. Leftoverture(carry on) brought them commercial success and although they stayed somewhat progressive, they kind of sold their souls to pop. Happens to the best of em.
Thank for doing this song. everyone on you tube does the three....dust...carry on and point......DIG DEEPER.....try Mysteries and Mayhem.....and strap in for a RIDE!!!!!
i was a huge Kansas fan back in the 70s, and I definitely heard this album a LOT (and remember the title) but I have no memory of the actual song. It was like I was hearing it for the first time. LOL
How could you not have heard Icarus on FM radio back in the 70s? It was played quite frequently. I fell in love with this tune and got Masque asap. This is quintessential Kansas Progressive Rock. Heck, they named their box set collection SAIL ON.
Thanks fellas. To answer your question, this is from the Masque album, which is two before Point of Know Return. Dig into the album in the middle - Leftoverture. Every track is killer. For a rocking side, check out "What's on my Mind" or "Carry on Wayward Son". On the prog side, "Miracles out of Nowhere", and "Magnum Opus" are winners.
Kansas is still around, granted only with one original member. Kerry Livgren joined them again in 2000, writing the entire "Somewhere to Nowhere" album. If you can listen to some of those tracks - Steve Walsh sings, Kerry Livgren on guitar. On that album you'll find "Icarus II". Great album - and you tend to do deep tracks.
Two original members: guitarist Rich Williams, and drummer (and band manager) Phil Ehart. Phil tore up his arm last summer and so he and his drum tech Eric Holmquist (who's also one heck of a drummer) have been splitting the duties, with Eric playing the first half of the shows and Phil coming out after Dust in The Wind a little over halfway thru. Some of the Florida shows have had guest spots by former member (and alltime monster axeman) Steve Morse, on Down The Road and Carry On Wayward Son.
This album, Supertramps Crisis What Crisis, Steely Dans Royal Scam 1976 every night before passing out lol. With headphones and living right across the street from Martin Guitar! 🔥🤘✌😉
Yeah, this is before they went commercial. So many of the bands back then imho were so much better before they signed that big contract. They sell out their integrity often times. ✌bros!
First two three albums were the best. Then they had a massive hit with Dust in The Wind and got a little more radio friendly while keeping some talent for a few longer pieces. Great live band. This is from their second album.
Anything Kansas from point of no return and before, is the best music ever written by a rock band. Leftoverture in my opinion is Kansas at their best, songs like Magnum Opus. are incredible.. every song on that album is a master piece
This one def has that YES feel to me but still unique and Kansas throughout. Great job guys finding one I've never heard before. I like the way you really listen and the reactions are as genuine as it gets. Onward to 500K.

Oh yeah. Now you're hitting the good shit from Kansas. They were a prog rock orchestra. Geniuses in their day. Love this track
Actually Progresdive symphonic rock!
I think most die hard Kansas fans would agree this is the essence of the Kansas sound:) Truly exceptional!
💯
IMO, Masque is their best album.
Masterpiece !!
@Monica Nikel I agree! This along with The Pinnacle, Mysteries and Mayhem, All the World, and Child of Innocence are true gems in their catalogue.
Opinions, like assholes, differ
This is one of Kansas' great tunes IMHO. It's exhilarating to listen to, especially the outro (the live version is even better). They're such an awesome combination of hard rock and symphonic arrangements.
They sounded just as crisp live. It was unbelievable.
Singer/keyboardist Walsh one of the greatest ever in rock!
My favorite band by a long shot. Saw the original 6 members 8 times in the 70s - even better live than recorded. Amazing songwriting by Kerry Livgren!

This is the first Kansas song I ever heard; was so blown away, I immediately went to the record store and bought the first three albums!
This song is before the other Kansas songs you guys have reacted to ! "The Wall " is a great song to check out !
First class musicians on display here with the incredible electric violin.. A little prog but mixed with solid American rock!
I've seen Kansas at least 10 times in concert, so many times I can't remember. Two for the Show is one of the first albums I bought and one of the best live albums in rock.

Absolutely love Kansas! Such amazing music! Amazing vocals, compositions, as well as musicians! I hope you do a deep dive into their catalog.
CHILD OF INNOCENCE is my pick.
You can't skim over Kansas. Start buying albums and let your jaw drop in awe.
I haven’t heard this song in 45 years and sounds as great today as it did when I was a teenager!
1st 3 Kansas albums are pure progressive gold.
One of my old friends favorite bands...R.I.P. Eugene Vittone..😊
If you REALLY want to find out how great Kansas is as a band, listen to anything off "Two for the Show", their live album from 1978... Arguably one of the best live albums of that period.
The Wall on that live album is ridiculous.
For sure.
Two for the Show is to Kansas as Unleashed in the East is to Judas Priest, and Strangers in the Night is to UFO.
They were a great band back in the 70's seen them 2 times and they always killed it!
there's so much good in kansas love their music
"Is that what was going on in Topeka?" Laughed out loud at that. Good one.
I met them back in 1973, before most hadn't heard of them. I worked at a radio station, and they were promoting their music.
Kansas yes! One of the Premier Prog-Rock/Progressive Bands from the 70's Era!

FWIW, violin was part of Kansas' sound from the very beginning. It was played by Robby Steinhardt. Robby also was one of the vocalists.
