Kelly Thomas was beaten to death by police in 2011. A homeless man with schizophrenia, he was loitering outside of a club when employees of said club called the police on him under the false pretense of "breaking into cars". When police arrived (about 6 officers), he complied with their requests but was tazed multiple times and savagely beaten. During said brutality, he cried out for help and his father. Left in a pool of his own blood, he was taken to the hospital and subsequently died of his injuries 5 days later. There was outrage but nowhere near as much as this case. I'll give you one guess as to why that is
Regrettably it was because the man that you are talking about is the EXCEPTION TO THE RULE. It is most unfortunate that that happened to him & yes, I know the case in reference. But since you had the gall to go there. There is a recent incident wherein a woman was able to open fire on police from inside the police squad car using the police officer’s own weapon. Yet, AFTER doing so and subsequently surrendering herself almost FOUR HOURS LATER, she is ALIVE & WELL, as far as anyone knows_ Do YOU wanna guess WHY THAT is? …See, two can play THAT game. FYI, incidents like her’s happen with about as much frequency as people like Tyre. Except it’s ASTONISHING how in his MOST cases like his result in DEATH. Whereas her’s ends in a SUCCESSFUL ARREST. But explain THAT PART…I’ll wait.🥱😪😴🛌 💤
Having watched the video many times it still horrifies me but I’m now “listening “ to the video and I hear inarticulate uneducated bullies grandstanding for each other and making excuses for inexcusable brutal behaviour . Did someone infiltrate a gang, cherry pick the most vile of the goons and say “hey you guys wanna be cops?”.The only articulate sane person was the victim. He was a human and they are savages. RIP sweet Tyre.
Welcome to New America, where street thugs are given cop jobs because they can't get anyone else. And you can thank the democrats and media for this with all their anti-police rhetoric.
They did not recruit from gangs per say, but what they did was to form a unit that was supposed to handle violent crimes, which mainly attracts thrill seeking cops, then give that unit a name you'd expect to see in a comic book rather than real life and apparently leave those cops more or less to their own. Basically, a condition was created that draws the adventurous bad cops to the unit and it was not really a question of if things would go wrong, rather it was the question of how wrong things would go.
@@Crystalgate The unit wasn't at fault. The problem was that the PD starting hiring people based on their skin color as they simultaneously made it easier for people to get into the police to handle staffing issues and to reform the system. Less trained, less educated, less fit? Welcome anyway. Listen to how the cops talked, smoked cigarettes, made jokes and how they brutalized the suspect. That's the sort of cops you attract if there's no real qualifications needed.
The senseless and barbaric murder of Tyre Nichols is beyond comprehension. The five officers involved, who acted with a criminal and gang-like mentality, should be punished to the fullest extent of the law. It is terrifying and sickening that there are so many bullies hiding behind badges in police departments throughout the country. My thoughts and condolences go to Tyre's family and friends as they grieve this tragic loss. Justice must be served for Tyre and may he rest in peace.
I can't believe it's still going on . . . Rodney King was 23 years ago, George Floyd was 3. And in-between there've been many more that were successfully covered up, that were never investigated because no one cared. You're not going to stop racism through training or classes on multiculturalism; forget about the carrot, it's time for the stick. We need to seek these cases out from coast to coast and fight every one of them; show them that we DO care about every one of them. Don't give these cops a free card anywhere, not in a crime ridden city, not in the boondocks. We have a common enemy and we must unite to rid this country of this Gestapo mentality in our police departments.

Agreed. I only watched it to honor this young man's memory. I haven't been able to stop thinking about it though. Or crying over it. Having my own family members and myself traumatized by cops numerous times over the years, it's very hard for me. But I made myself watch these videos. I had to. They were mad from the get go!! They never approached his car and asked for license and registration! They violently ripped his car door open and yanked him out of it! Then they were totally pissed because he made their fat, out of shape, donut eating asses run!! Plain and simple!!
I've been saying that a bigger investigation needs to go further then this incident, cause I dont believe these officers woke up one day and just decided they will go and beat a guy to death. This (to me) is the terrible conclusion of months (possibly years) of bad policing without accountability. You can only get away with something so many times before you get caught doing it. People need to come forward! problem is, if you are already in jail because of the misdeeds of these officers no one listens to you! They just say "yeah, yeah we know you're innocent" when in fact they may well be. We heard them say that when Tyre was pulled over he swung at the officer, which was not true and we saw another officer say Tyre went for another officers gun, also not true. So how many are in jail right now because of the lies these officers are so eagerly willing to put out there? I'm gonna say it again "These officers need to be investigated further then this one incident".
They have beat others during traffic stops it was a few days prior they had the same incident except the man didn't die these officers have had a few incidents like this and got no consequences for what they did
As a black immigrant from the Caribbean, I have learned that Black people in America can be just as racist as a white officers. Black Americans tend to think they elevate in class and are better than others when presented with certain positions in society. This certainly does not help anyone. I do agree with Van.

My Prayers go out to the Nichols family and ask god to hold them in comfort for the loss of their son.
This is unfortunately true and I have seen this psychological attitude in some (cerrtainly not all) cops. Police come out of the academy as idealistic rookies but when you deal day after day, month after month, year after year, with criminal people in terrible environments, it is understandable that just as you wrote, cops can become jaded. They begin to assume everyone is a criminal or at best, a potential criminal. This applies even more to black people due to the factual rate of crime in the black community but the psychological process is general. I suppose the only way to deal with it is for the department to have ongoing activities to train against this process.
@@elliotstamler1244 When they begin to feel that way, it is time for them to go into another line of work. There should not be addition activities. Just go.
The problem in USA is that you form police officer in a few months, up here in Quebec and most of Canada, you go to college for at least 3 years to become a decent officer, they have to learn to have respect and understand that they work for the people.

Yes - AND - a lot of people don't realize how much self-hatred affects our world. And, as Van Jones says, the particular case is mostly about power and the abuse of it.
Same. I came public with SA from cops, and it was mostly all other women who harassed, mobbed, and lied about me (in order to protect their cops and husbands). I have many other examples too

This is just pure disgusting evil. That man knew he was going to die...he knew it. He said "y'all are doing too much right now" and later called out for his Mother. He knew he would not survive
Van Jones has had many good takes regarding a variety of issues but on this one I just can’t agree … to bring up racism in this situation is just not correct … This was a pure case of 5 officers who thought they were going to get away with yet another brutal beating because they just didn’t care … However this time God had other plans … RIP Tyre 🙏🏾
Black people are capable of being racist against other black people. Several Studies have showen black people tend to have prejudice against other black people, prejudice that fit into certain racist stereotypes, and women bosses tend to give the men an higher raise between equally qualified and experienced women and men and so on
I don't think it's racism I think it's about superior and abuse of power. For example, the cops think they are above the law and everyone else is below them.
I am still trying to understand why there are 5 cops at the scene for a simple traffic stop in the first place. It is almost like some kind of wolf pack mentality going there and they were just out to look for preys. There’s got to be something very wrong with the police training and hiring practices.
The dumb Cops didn't like having had to chase down Tyre twice. They crushed and broke his neck. That's why in the Video they kept propping him up. Everywhere we went it was so embarrassing for me to see just how he in a country where almost everyone looked like him yet he felt less valued than he would back in the US restaurants and banks and places of business were not any different....
Profiling tends to target the profile. If, statistically speaking, Chinese tourists aren’t committing crimes, they won’t fit the profile or catch the same heat.
In my experience, this is not the typical experience of Black Americans visiting Nairobi, as tourists or on business. The typical experience is friendly and welcoming. How did your friend dress. How did he speak? What was his body language? All these factors may have given signals that made the Kenyans nervous. If he was dressing or behaving at all gangsta, in ways that would generally be tolerated in the United States, Kenyans might assume the worst about your friend.

Welcome to New America, where street thugs are given cop jobs because they can't get anyone else. And you can thank the democrats and media for this with all their anti-police rhetoric.
@@joem3502 I think I will thank the republicans, they are thugs who happen to wear suits.
I've been saying that a bigger investigation needs to go further then this incident, cause I dont believe these officers woke up one day and just decided they will go and beat a guy to death. As a cop, you see the worst of the worst. If every criminal is purple, then you make assumptions toward every purple person. They become jaded.
Hi how are you doing?
Bull!!! stop making excuses. Society is not all bad.

You give that much unchecked power to police, it's almost certain some will go rogue. Also, maybe not name an initiative aimed at bringing peace to a neighbourhood, SCORPION. Nothing good's coming from that.
They have units just like that 1 in every stareset it's just called a different name.
I’m sickened!!
Makes it so confusing to even watch or listen! OMG!! RIP young living soul.
This was old fashioned police brutality. The feeling that if you run, or fail to comply, you deserve a beat down. Some kind of rage that you dare to disobey. This is the kind of brutality that happens to everyone that doesn’t immediately comply, or runs because they’re scared. I’m a 57 year old white guy, and I’ve seen this kind of rage. I can’t imagine throwing the racism on top of that. Until the “good cops” stand up to this, and the unions stop defending the bad cops, I don’t see the getting better. It’s alarming how many videos show this kind of behavior. It’s not isolated, it’s rampant. Kudos to the local government, and this police department for addressing this quickly, and immediately getting these guys off the street.
There are no good cops
I bet them 5 thugs have been doing this and I bet they target the drug dealers to beat and take their money because they are not going to tell no one but now they have been caught and guess what their brother's and sister's in blue is kicking them to the curb. RIP Tyre justice will be serve
Richard Doig You are so correct, 👍🏽💯🎯 Sadly so many people victimize their own ,hate is hate no matter the color or ethnicity. Whites hate whites and people of color, people of color hate whites and other people of color, it's such a terrible and sad condition and it's going to take all of us of every ethnicity and color to drown out the hate including some that is encouraged by some of our media. We must all work together, that's the only way to save our country and continue to work towards the beautiful country we know we can become 🙏🏽
They knew it was OK to kill a black man, they were looking for praise from the PD,that's the way you train dogs, with treats or a pat on the head, belly rub, good job boys
Richard Doig@ so true. This is sickening. If we, the politicians, the power that be; every day people, don’t do something to stop this, it will continue to happen. We need to stop being reactive, but we proactive.
I think this might be one of the worst cases of known police brutality if not the worst because everything was done in the open knowing everything will be looked at and still they couldn't stop themselves.
What about George Floyd. What about Rodney king.
Van is absolutely right. He hits the nail right on its head
I appreciate Van Jones' point of view and think it is valid, but my theory is that these officers are just a%*holes and bullies.
There is a scientific experiment where kids black or white consider the black doll the naughty dol and the white doll the nice one.
Shaka Zulu
Those people need to learn how to comply with law enforcement and they wouldn't have so many problems.
