Authentic Sri lankan Kanji.l Traditional conjee.l South Asian rice porridge. Ramadan Kareem!

- This authentic south Asian rice porridge is very famous during Ramadhan time. its super nourishing and really delicious. The measurements here is for one pot of conjee that serves 8 people or you can freeze and reheat the next day for consumption. I have made it thick which is how i like it but you can add water and thin it out as preferred.
INGREDIENTS :
FOR THE BASIC CONJEE:
1 cup of Jeerakashala rice. (you can use any kind of white or brown rice).
1/4 Tsp of fenugreek seeds.
1 cup of thick coconut milk.
Four pods of garlic.
1 stick of cinnamon.
Salt to taste.
FOR THE MEAT MIX:
500grms or 1kg of beef bone in cut into pieces. You can add less or more meat, really depends on the flavor range you want. Chicken can also be used.
1 big bombay onion chopped.
1 whole garlic and 2 inch ginger smashed together.
2 medium sized tomatoes chopped.
1 big table spoon of ghee.
1 bay leaf.
4 pods of cardamom.
3 cloves.
1/4 tsp of cumin seeds.
2 Tbsp of Sri lankan curry powder .
1 Tbsp of red chilli powder.
salt to taste.
1 soup bullion cube. (please don't use this, if you want the original and traditional taste).

Our neighbours used to send us kanji every year. Back then we didn't know what on earth it was and it looked terrible so we always tossed it to the dogs 😞 until one of my friends spoke about it and let me try some of it. Boy was I filled with so much of guilt and regret for not knowing what a rich, tasty, healthy meal this was!

With the Kanji there should be side dish( chutney) which tasted dipping the finger in a it and just slip the finger.do you know that chutney receip.

This is a condiment called Katta sambol, it's primarily a chili sambol but dried fish can be added as well

You can thin it out with water if you want. But yes.. it's very heavy.. only in small portions..😄

Hey Why dont you make a prawn kanji one day. We all know about the common kanji with chicken and meat. Try with murunga leaves with prawn kanji malay style🙂🦐🦐🦐

Hi Majja.. Yes definitely can use mushroom and margarine.. sauté the mushroom in the margarine first and add it at the end.. If you can get brown portabello mushroom or oyster mushrooms that will be the best choice. ☺️

Maam with a lot of respect i am tamil muslim,this was invented by mr,mohamed ali who a tamil muslim from kadayanallur on the border of kerala,tamil nadu who was running a food stall in rangoon ,burma in early 20 th century he introduced back in his native which spread throughout kerala,tamil nadu and later srilanka,today in all malaysian,burma,and even in semarang,java,medan,sumatra,in mosques tamil muslims manage to make and serve it,where i am in hong kong in kowloon mosque only tamil muslims serve every ramadhan for 2500/- muslims free everyday,in dubai our malayali brothers are doing it,for your info we tamil,and malayalis are like siblings no difference our languages are mutually intelligible,we are not outsiders in each others state,i think you may be a malay muslim
