Yeah, APC is basically Billy Howerdel's band, and at one point asked Maynard if he would write lyrics and sing for them. There's also Maynard's third band, Puscifer, which is basically Maynard's personal pet project band.
For his 60th Birthday he recently toured (Sessanta) with APC, Puscifer, and Primus. All 3 bands alternated playing and then all played together. Was an amazing show. When they played in LA at the Hollywood Bowl, Tool made a surprise appearance to play a song as well.

All of APC, like Tool, is worth listening to the whole album on repeat. Just let it fly for a few hours. I know it's better for you to react to each song, and I hope you still get to enjoy the ride. What a wonderful journey to be on. Spiral out, my friend. You're doing great!

Wait till you get in to his other band, Puscifer!! They have a very diverse discography, chocked full of masterful compositions! They also do 2 or 3 versions of many songs so there's always something for everyone at all times. Simply great musicians and the best harmonies of anything you'll ever hear with Maynard! Carina Round is the female singer in Puscifer, she was absolutely born to sing with Maynard, they're incredible together!

Billy was the guitar technician for TOOL. Billy asked Maynard to sing on it and that’s gospel

I’m a huge APC fan, other members you may not know are in the band are James Iha of Smashing Pumpkins on 2nd guitar, before him it was Troy Van Leeuen of Failure/Queens Of The Stone Age, Josh Freese on drums who is currently with Foo Fighters and also played with Nine Inch Nails, Paz Lenchantin was on bass who also played with The Pixies and Twiggy Ramirez of Marilyn Manson replaced her.
    A real supergroup!
If you have time to watch the music video for this, it’s fantastic and Maynard plays a funny character.

Maynard is definitely a really smart and practical guy in his approach to music, but also business. You might want to check a very underestimated band called Ashes Divide. It's a band fronted by Billy Howerdel, the lead guitar of A Perfect Circle. APC is actually Billy's band with Maynard on vocals. Most music was written by Billy, and he produced the albums. He has a very unique guitar sound that translated into Ashes Divide, which has a different set of musicians (Josh Freese played drums on APC and Ashes Divide), but the APC vibe is there. Check Stripped Away or The Stone

Thanks for the reaction Erol! You nailed it on the lyrical analysis. This is a concept album concerning addiction and is a play on the AA Twelve Step Program, the Thirteenth Step. The album has 13 tracks and each portrays addiction from a different perspective: various perspectives of the user, from the perspective of the drug itself, and from the perspective of others affected by the user's addiction such as in this case from the point of view of someone who is watching the user succumb to the destruction of addiction while being unable to understand why that person is ruining their life going down that path...

Great reaction Erol! You know you’re forgetting about Maynard’s third band Puscifer. All three are pretty important if you want to understand the scope of his genius. Puscifer is kind of a genre bending band in that they do them all. As with all his projects there is no bad place to start but I’m going to recommend starting with this live studio recording/video of a song called “Mama Sed,” from the album V is for Versatile… A hallmark of Puscifer is that every song has at least 2 or 3 drastically different versions to appreciate, this song is no different.

The following quote from Maynard sums up the main concepts behind the 'Thirteenth Step' album, including 'The Outsider.'
"The songs on Thirteenth Step for the most part are about the various processes of addiction, behavioral addictions, chemical addictions, and each song is kind of sung from a different perspective. I've a lot of friends who've gone through a lot of these situations. Some of the songs are sung from the perspective of the actual drug, from the perspective of someone who has realized that they have an issue or a problem, also from the perspective of a person who realizes that if they don't do something they're going to die, a song from the perspective of a person who is in denial about a loved one, dying right before their eyes. And in the case of "The Outsider", it's sung from the perspective of a person who doesn't understand at all what their friend is going through, what their loved one is going through, and they think that it's more like a sprained ankle; they can just kind of walk it off."

I counted with you. APC and Puscifer have much less polyrhythms. Just great musicians making great music with the help of Maynard who I find to be a modern day Renaissance man. You'll enjoy live videos of both bands.
