What are the incentives to do better exactly? For most young men in the west, what are they working for? They most likely won't own a house, ever at this rate since houses are out-earning people. They're not working for a wife or family, since women are completely unsuitable. Maybe there's a possibility for passport bros, but most men aren't suitable for that plan. They're not working for purpose due to a slew of employment problems and the fact that most people live to work, not work to live. So why would a guy work more hours? Not sure how it is in the US, but here in the UK it's pretty common where working more hours gets you nearly no benefit in pay. Why work 15 more hours per week for about £30 more? Is it going to help you move up in your career? Nope, because HR is so involved in the hiring process if you want a better paycheque you're better off lying your ass off and moving after 18-24 months before everything comes crashing down. You're better off looking out for yourself because everyone else does.
