      Reid is one of the best example rolemodels of a great magic tournament player. He is very respectful to his opponents, always calm and collected and has just a ton of charm to go with his super-tight magic play.
      I played him in a 3v3 team grand prix, though I wasn't matchup up with him directly. He was extremely friendly and approachable and ofcourse beat the hell out of my teammate that had to face him in his 1v1 games. (with magic cards, not fisticuffs)

    Okay, this was the best video I watched in a long time and I really got sentimental. Bommer Jund was my pet deck in the 2013 Legacy-GP in Strasbourg and it got me really far. It was basically the shell you guys were talking about with Deathrite Shamans, Tarmogoyfs, Punishing Fire + Grove Combo, Liliana, Thoughtseize, Abrupt Decays and Dark Confidants. God, I loved this deck. I went 8:1 on day one, and sadly did misplay on day 2 and got the 33rd place. After the Deathrite ban the deck died and I sadly had to change. But deep down in my heart, this deck will always be one of my favorites. As you said, good honest matches. Thank you for this amazing video, please keep on going with this quality content.

    What I love about this kind of archetype is that it is the epitome of fair Magic, there is no big combo, no "my third land is a tapland so I lose to the rushdown", no lockpieces that say "you don't get to play". It is more like "everyone gets to play, first one to run out of resources loses" that generates longer, more interactive games that are a blast to play.

    As you requested. Please keep making these videos. 1. They're awesome and entertaining. 2. It's important to document the history behind these decks. If MTG sticks around it'll be because younger players WANT to play MTG. Similar to how speedruns of N64 games have millions of views; people want to know the history of what they enjoy. It's why people often refer to their hobbies as passions. This channel and your efforts are wonderful examples of someone passionate about the game and what it brings to the (kitchen) table.

  • @whemstoycabinet693
    @whemstoycabinet693 Год назад +1

    Well, one thing this may have gotten wrong is how far back the evaluation really was. Based on the narrative, it touched only the golden years, the first 5 years, and did not even took on the Black Summer of 96.
    See i'm one of the old skul guys,and i can attest to how big "The Dojo" was and how it deffined future netdecking.
    For atarters BG was a staple then, limited only by the availability of the dual lands. This was possibly the fastest deck around that time, with a Dark Ritual , Juzam and Ernham finishing off in 3 turns.
    BR and RG were also prominent. It was actually Blue who do not have a good presence. White is also dominant for reasons it is a foil in the meta dominated by Black and Red.
    BR and RG both have a home with Landkill (you call it Ponza now). Its not very evidently used in tourneys because players "dont want to get hated on"....yes, players has a love and hate relationship with LandKill decks. BR only weakness was enchantments, for which Nev Disk was a powerfull staple then.
    Finally, RG is the 2nd fastest next to Bayou (BG) esp. with ouchland (you now call it painlands) in friendly colors of B&R in Sulfuruos Springs. Its was the most versatile and fast deck with fast mana critters of both G and R (Orcish Lumberjack) and answer to critters, artifacts and enchantment, again the only foil coming from White.
    And lest you forget, after the Black Summer before Urzas, there was Pros/Drain/Bloom that got intermitently banned.
    This is a nice take, but it lacks more depth. '94 to '99 was not the Stone-Age. Before Combo Winter there were already more variety, unlike how modern players "thought" it now due to a narrow and lack of legit older viewpoint. Do you even know what preceded "The Dojo", unless you live the era, you will know coz it aint searchable that far back with the internet😏

  • @pinobluevogel6458
    @pinobluevogel6458 Год назад +2

    Another great deck history video, these are really awesome to watch and extremely well produced!
    I remember clearly back in the standard Jund days, I optimistically designated my deck as one with a good Jund matchup, conceding some amount to other decks at the time. But even my overloaded with value, filled with great early interaction, Grixis control list struggled to even beat the deck that I had specifically designed it to beat.
    There was a reason control decks weren't played much at the time, a big one being that even just the Jund deck by itself could also just overload you with value plays that traded 2 for 1, while also pressuring you with solid beatdown.
    Looking back at it, even though it was a menace of a deck, I still really enjoyed playing the format at the time, which was soon being replaced with all kinds of Jace, the Mind Sculptor decks with broken equipment and some amount of Eldrazi Conscription lists. Standard went frustrating after this for quite some time. I clearly remember the Jund era as one of the longer times in history where standard was an enjoyable format to both play and design decks for, especially on a budget.

  • @DeadlyGrim
    @DeadlyGrim Год назад

    re: Combo Winter -- Probably the best example of the decks of the time was Brian Hacker's Pro Tour Rome deck. He kept a no-land hand, played Gustha's Scepter (a card that I'm sure most people have never heard of), passed, and then on his next turn was able to generate enough mana to deck out his opponent with Stroke of Genius.
    (Hacker would also probably be a great topic for another historical MtG video. He built one of the first White Weenie decks, developed the idea of playing with 16-18 lands 5-8 spells 14-19 creatures in limited, invented the term "beatdown", and was just a major innovator in drafting. Though he's far enough in the Dark Ages of Magic that it might be hard getting much exact info.)
    Anywho, great video as always! You said the historical videos take a while, but I think they're definitely worth it. Please keep 'em up!

Including how stoneforge mystic got banned despite being in a precon (which was still legal except it had to be the exact 60 cards of the precon) and how Jace finally got banned like a couple weeks before he rotated. Or actually birthing pod and its lifetime in standard and modern would be sick, not to mention splinter twin! And its ridiculous banning at the time and the fact its been locked away unfairly since "just for being popular" and not necessarily overpowered. Damn and this is just the stuff i remember from back in my days, theres tonnes more i don't know about, going pre time spiral before i started

    Jund is the deck I played and I only started playing Modern about two years ago. I guess what drew me to it was that every matchup feels skill based, and I love that about it. If I win I almost always feel like I deserved it and if I lose I always feel like I deserved it. I could definitely be playing Murktide and be enjoying my experience but I think I prefer the cleanness of succeeding with Jund. Obviously I'm only playing locals and state size events, but it's what brings me fun in the game.

    This was so well done! Videos like this are fascinating for me since I'm a long time player who only ever did kitchen table magic and was completely isolated from the meta, culture, and archetypes of Magic. Turns out that when I learned to play I liked aggro (hello Elvish Rage precon) but as I've gotten older and played more I have gone more and more midrange. Thanks for such a well produced video!

    The printing of Deathrite was something else. Pro Tour R2R was my first and I hedged on the wrong golgari rare from that set - Lotleth Troll. Had been watching Michael Jacob and Cedric Phillips stream while I was testing and Geralf's Messenger had been putting in work in his Jund deck. I figured Lotleth and Messenger would let me also play Gravecrawler, to make opposing Lillianas in the jund mirror look silly. Only a fraction of the field had Deathrite but boy was that the play.

    Super interesting, never knew that the idea of a mid-range deck was such a relatively new concept. I remember we all played with mid-range like decks in 95 (without releasing it). We just put the best cards we had in a deck and traded mainly to find the right colour 😂 A lot of 93/94 decks now are actually mid-range decks. You don't see a lot of Jund in OS, but it does give you access to Xira which is pretty sweet. Anyway, getting sidetracked, thanks for making these and great to have Duke in here.

    This is a period of Magic history that I know little about because I stopped playing just as the Urza block and 6th Edition came in. So it is absolutely fascinating to learn about how midrange came to be a dominant archetype over the rock, paper, scissors of control, combo and aggro. It might have taken you longer than other videos but I think it was absolutely worth it.
