In a future Cardmarket Feature Match, I'd like to see a rematch of the finalist decks in the first world championship. It would be fun to see those decks played, but by players that have a modern professional understanding of the game. Like Toffel vs Arne. Proxy time!
One small parallel that you missed out on mentioning, Celestial Collonade is actually Serra Angel on a land, which is fitting given the win con of the original Deck.
I really really appreciate these kinds of videos. Viewers can tell the difference between throwaway content and well researched/informative videos. This could become my favourite series from your channel next to all the fun paper play content. You're doing a great job guys
I've always played Azorius Control in every format. I live for that precise moment in which you go from losing to winning. You always start behind, and every game is uphill. I love Azorius Control.
I get so much heat playing UW control in edh! 🤣 Interesting to note: the players usually getting salty when other players do broken and spiky stuff get even more salty when they themselves can't use their broken effects as easily.
I loved how this vid opened with Ivan winning the pro tour with creatureless control. I watched basically every game in the top 8 he played and i bought the entire deck the next day. It's in my opinion the coolest showing of UW control I've seen and made me an azorius guy to this day. Super iconic
I will never forget the UW control in RTR/Theros. I started playing around this time and I thought the deck was unbeatable. I played in a local PTQ and one of the guys from our hometown brought UW control, and every time he lost a game I was completely flabbergasted. He ended up in top 8 but didn't secure the win, and I'll never forget that day :) Great video, I loved this.
Red/Green Monsters, Black Devotion, Blue Devotion, Blue/White Heroic, Green/White Aggro, Green Devotion and Blue/White Control - That format was peak MTG Blue white was objectively the best deck I think. Monsters and Black Devotion could beat it, but it was just the best deck against everything else. Hilariously, back then I managed to create the hardcounter for it: Maze's End. The only deck that Blue/White Control couldn't beat was tutoring for tap-lands that win you the game.
I turned my UW heroic deck into UW Control. I loved the power of Sphinx's Revelation and was addicted to watching SCG events with UW control in it. We played group games in college with standard decks before we got into edh and I remember drawing out my deck and shuffling it all back with elixir and 3 guys couldn't stop me from ultimate elspeth with bunch of tokens. The fact I got away with playing 2 Aetherling as my only creatures was hilarious to this day to me. Love UW Control
I don't think I've seen another MTG channel put out as much consistently high-quality content with such varied formats and topics. Keep doing history videos, on top of the goofy staple or stinker videos, the gameplay, news, and any other content you want! You guys are doing such an amazing job. Keep it up!
I love these looks back at the history of the game. I started playing in '96, when Mox were 100 a piece and lotus was 300. I can still picture the spikes at my school with their power 9 and legends cards in a big stack, being angry that I missed out on obtaining those cards
this video is genuinely one of my favorites that you guys have ever produced, it's obvious that the amount of research and effort that went into this was huge. making sure to send this to my magic group chats so it gets some more views, really really great and I hope to see some more videos like this in the future. very excited at the prospect of agro control as you mentioned earlier, fairies is one of my all-time favorite decks and I still play dimir faeries in pauper. great job and looking forward to more like this
I’m disappointed to report that Azorius control is still alive and well in Pioneer. As a mono-red player, I keep a couple copies of Fry in my Sideboard to snipe Teferi before he becomes inevitable. I’d love to see a history of Tron, and what the different targets have been over the years.
It's also kicking around in Historic pretty effectively but that format is full to the brim with 20+ aggro decks which makes things difficult. Tbf it's kind of a Lotus Field cheese deck that just wins off turn 3 Teferi but it's there. Edit: if Stifle was legal in modern, there's a world where Azorius Lotus Field has a shot but in the Historic cardpool it's something else.
Great bit of history there. One note with the name of Weissman’s “The Deck”, Brian has said that when he started playtesting with a friend that they had a bunch of decks all named after themes. So they had “The Direct Damage Deck”, “The Weenie Deck, and “The Counterspell Deck”. Then they had one with 4x Library of Alexandria and 4x Mind Twist that was very good but they didn’t know what it’s theme was so it was called “The Deck”. Both Mind Twist and Library were later restricted, and eventually the 1x Amnesia replaced Mind Twist when the latter was banned in 1995.
Carl, I gotta say... i found the channel from the game you played with Magic the Noah, and i love the work you do. The effort you put into these videos helped reignite a love for magic i had back in elementary school! Much love from Montreal! Thanks for putting in the work you do, and i hope the channel is rewarded for it 😁
I would say that ramp is it's own archetype seperate from combo, aggro and ramp; even though there's overlap. Very nice video btw! I'm loving your content cardmarket, easily my favourite channel on RUclips!

U/W control has always been my favorite deck, probably because when I stumbled upon my dad's old cards, it was the one deck he still had sleeved up, with Serra Angel, Control Magic, Counterspell and Swords to Plowshares, and when I finally grew into building my own decks, from the moment I saw Ivan Floch's U/W control, I fell in love with it. Awesome! I would love to see a coverage of the Beatdown type. I don't know if that ever was considered an 'archetype'. I just had so much fun with a Temur aggro deck in 2000...
Really cool documentary style video, befits the blue-white style perfectly. I think I truly fell in love with the game when I learned you could win without a traditional combat or fireball based approach.
I'm a grixis player and when I decide I want to be truly evil I pull out azorious control. It is a different style of control deck compared to grixis control but ohh boy do people have stories about their past resume against azorious control. This was a neat history lesson and I'd love to see more as I can tell the love and work that went into this video. I have only been around since late 2015 but seeing history of old arctypes and how they look compared to today's powercreep is crazy.
I was a kid playing back in these days. I read Scrye mag, and picked up knowledge here there at my local gaming store. UW control was so good during these times!
As a magic zoomer, 5 mana Teferi was my introduction to the archetype, and watching Greg Orange’s performance in that pro tour in like 2018 had me hooked for life
The first deck I sleeved up was UWR control in innistrad/RTR standard. Such a good time. I later shifted to UB control once Theros came out. Control is definitely what got me hooked on mtg.
About archetypes, I think combo is more of a sub-archetype. You can have combo decks that try to win ASAP (aggro combo decks) or more controlling combo like that Splinter Twin, or anything in between. That makes combo more similar to mill or lifegain or prison decks in that it's a tool in your toolbox rather than an archetype like aggro, midrange, control, and tempo are archetypes. It's a way to build a win condition or way to survive into your deck that is based on the interaction of multiple cards.
A traditional combo deck is something that wins as soon as it has the combo, and the rest of the deck does nothimg but tutors up the combo pieces. Mill decks tend to be control decks with a bit more co voluted a win condition.
My friend used to play a UW winter orb relic barrier deck after legends was released until type 1 died out in about 1996. He used to win quite a lot. He used to play 70 cards because he didn’t know what to cut. Eventually he listened to me and added black duals for 1 demonic tutor. That made it even better.
I had a whole block of text about it in the original script! But for video-lenght, I had to pick between modern, pioneer and legacy. Modern is the most popular format so 🥲
This report needed Shawn "Hammer" Regnier's UW turbo millstone from the Ice Age Pro Tour. Howling Mines and Winter Orbs coupled with Icy Manipulators and the full suite of UW removal to run millstones to cap out the grind - imagine being afraid you were drawing too many cards and not being able to cast any of them? It ended up capitulating in the top 8 to a field brimming with Necropotence, but up until this point, it was the singular most unique deck besides Ernham-geddon.
the history of my peoples, I've had to move away from my dear control deck into hammer as control simply does not get there enough anymore, but I yearn for the day in which I can play it again without feeling like its a futile deck
I'm happy you like it! 😃 I've been working for months on another one about Red Deck Wins that will be coming out tomorrow. There's a lot of great stories in there :) I bought the cardigan in a tiny shop in Canada many years ago. I tried to find a link for you but I think it no longer seems to be sold :/

Phenomenaly produced video, really interesting and lots of fun!
more in depth magic history please!!!!!!!! I crave this type of content
Loved this video. Hope it's gonna become a series
Thank you for the great video! Would love to see more MTG history videos in the future. :)
We are workijgbon the next one now!
This was awesome! I know it’s a smaller format, but I would’ve liked to see more on Legacy’s Miracles. Maybe next time?
I had a whole block of text about it in the original script! But for video-lenght, I had to pick between modern, pioneer and legacy. Modern is the most popular format so 🥲
Love this video! Please we need more of em!
It ended up capitulating in the top 8 to a field brimming with Necropotence, but up until this point, it was the singular most unique deck besides Ernham-geddon.
these videos are worth the effort. As well as all of the talent. Cardmarket, don't you hurt these bois!
I love these stories about the history of magic and decks/archetypes. Please do Jund next!!!!
If the video does well, my plan is indeed to do jund next! 😃 the midrange archetypes history in general is wild
Please do all the archetypes in the future, so much interesting!
We already did Mono Red as well
ruclips.net/video/myOwcAYyUSY/видео.html
And we're planning on doing midrange next :)
I had that VHS of the first pro tour, loved that thing.
The Deck was my inspiration for my first U/W control deck in 4th edition
the history of my peoples, I've had to move away from my dear control deck into hammer as control simply does not get there enough anymore, but I yearn for the day in which I can play it again without feeling like its a futile deck
Please do this more more long lived archetypes!
An absolutely lovely video, and one i keep coming back to.
ALSO: What on earth is your cardigan? Its lovely
I'm happy you like it! 😃 I've been working for months on another one about Red Deck Wins that will be coming out tomorrow. There's a lot of great stories in there :)
I bought the cardigan in a tiny shop in Canada many years ago. I tried to find a link for you but I think it no longer seems to be sold :/
great video. Pioneer has a great UW control deck. would love to hear the history of Rakdos/ Jund
