I just have to tell you that this is the easiest video I have found that doesn't take 20 mins, another whole video to figure out the actual steps and one that is straight and to the point! I've been so frustrated trying to find a video that explains what I need clearly and precisely and you did it! Thank You! Thank You! Thank you! sooooo much for this! It's in my saved box!
Outstanding video for vinyl layering - I was so frustrated because so many people think they can teach but all they are really doing is upsetting those of us wanting to learn! And you didn't say "um" and "Ya know" hundreds of times!!! So glad to have found this!!
Awesome ! I started vinyl a few months ago but stuck with single color, because I could not figure out exactly how to proceed for layering and did not want to scrap a whole bunch of material. Now a great world of new possibilities pops up to me thanks to a very easy technique and very clearly explained. Thank you so much !
Love this. Thanks for going step-by-step explaining the use of registration tabs. Perfect! I will be doing this in Canvas but your very clear instructions are very transferable to my software. Thanks again.
Holy cripes - the tab thing is freaking brilliant!!! I've been terrified of layering adhesive vinyl, but after watching this, I feel a heck of a lot more confident!!!! Thank you so much for posting this!!!
FYI Not sure if the basic edition has this but the Designer edition you can hit cut, then click advanced settings. This will bring up a chart with all the colors you have used in your project. You can then check the box of the color you wish to cut (and the color of your tabs). Rinse and repeat for each color. (This way you do not have to duplicate your design nor worry about accidentally moving things while deleting pieces of the colors you are not currently cutting) -- In Vs 4 of Studio you would use the SEND tab then the ADVANCED tab to bring up the color cutting chart.
That is ingenious!! What a great tip, can't wait to try it out. I'm new to Vinyl and just love all of your videos that make it so much easier! Thank you so much!
WOW you just got yourself a new subscriber. I been watching youtube videos all day long for when i get my cameo. I haven't came across one video yet that makes it look easy and your video just did that. Now i can't wait to get my cameo and start to cut out all these cool things i have :-) thank you so much
I know this video was made a while ago but I’m new to the Vinyl/Cricut/Cutting World and these videos have helped me SO much.... Hahaha btw the past 2 weeks I’ve made probably 5-6 orders from EV. I’m HOOKED! I honestly see a video and decide I need THAT vinyl so I go Place an order. I’m collecting quit a bit of vinyl & I’m not mad at it 😂
Expressions Vinyl 😂 I’ve already made diamond status at EV. I’ve made 8 orders since May 12th 😆. It’s so bad that I got an email yesterday saying my orders been shipped & I didn’t know what the email was talking about until I checked my account and seen the order, then I remembered. Like I said, I’m not mad at all about it 😍
Yes! Check out this one for setting it up in the software ruclips.net/video/jbsSp06I-lI/видео.html and this one for actually layering the pieces together ruclips.net/video/61jSgAL7Q8w/видео.html
I loved it. It really helped me a lot. One question I have is how did you get the red individual boxes around each picture that’s probably like step one that you did
You used a different layering technique in an earlier video. When do recommend on over the other? I'm layering a 2-color decal with a tight shadow layer in the background and I'm having a hard time lining the 2 layers of Oracal 651 up before they stick to each other. Thanks so much for your videos, just started watching.
Thanks Sara! This one? ruclips.net/video/u-v5_QITG9A/видео.html Where you are trying to line up a tight shadow layer I would go with that one. It allows you to line things up and tape it down before you take off the backing paper. BUT I also think it totally depends on the person. Maybe try both and see which one feels more comfortable.
Love this tutorial! I am interested in the cutter you are using. It looks like a box cutter, is it so sharp it makes marks on your mat? Interested in why you use that. Thanks!
Oh my box cutter! :) I love it! It is a folding utility knife you can get at the hardware store. It uses razor blades that you can change out when they get dull. It's 2 tools in 1 for me. I like the tip for weeding and the blade for cutting. It can cut into my mat that is why I use a self-healing mat from the fabric department. It is made for that purpose it doesn't dull my blade or ruin my table. :)
Thanks, I like this method of layering. I am having a problem, though. I have a 3 layered vinyl design that is 4.5" X 6.5" that has to be put on a 5" X 7" piece of glass (from a picture frame). The design has to be centered on the glass. If not, the frame hides part of the design and it is evident that the design is not straight and/or centered. I am working in should a small area, there is no room for an error. Any hints? Thanks!
Hi Marie, this method is what we'd recommend. Create your weeding box around the image at the exact size of the glass. Then when you are layering all you need to do is place the image lined up with the edges of the glass. Please let us know if you have any additional questions.
Can you please do this project in design space. Also, can you explain what a weeding box is. I am a newbie. Wonderful information and a beautiful project. Just can’t convert all if it to my maker because I am still learning it.
Hi, we will work on one for the Cricut. Here are a couple of videos that may help. The first one is about weeding boxes and how to create one. The second on is how to layer using a weeding box. It just covers the basics of why a weeding box would be helpful in layering. ruclips.net/video/OhSjQDsHuqs/видео.html ruclips.net/video/ziHunuT2LXg/видео.html
Hi Jessica, We have a video on that! Check out this one for setting it up in the software ruclips.net/video/jbsSp06I-lI/видео.html and this one for actually layering the pieces together ruclips.net/video/61jSgAL7Q8w/видео.html
Ok! so why did you decide to use the adhesive, with the paper backing instead of the clear backing? Did it make a difference. I am so afraid I am going to mess this up number one! Secondly, I have a cricut expresson do I just need to get rid of it and buy a cameo? Guy the design space on my computer and keep my expression. I feel like I have not done enough with my expression to get rid of it, but I already have a job and I dont know what to do? Help! Whats the best route. Please answer this fast! The project I am schedule to do is need by October 15th of this year 2017!
Hi Jamie, You can use the paper transfer tape or the clear it is just personal preference and what works best for you. Paper is a little harder to see through. Also, there are pros and cons with both the Silhouette machine as well as the Cricut Explore machine. We'd recommend that you go try out the software for each of the different machines to see what you like the best. You can do that by either going to silhouetteamerica.com or design.cricut.com. Hopefully this helps a little bit.
what kind of vinyl do you use? I have purchased cricut but have seen where a lot of people use oracle. really like your video the others I watched didn't show how they started it was kind of confusing. they just started laying after they had it cut out! thanks for sharing!!!!
Hi, we use the Oracal 631 or Expressions Vinyl Series 31 for removable projects or things that will just be short term. For longer term projects or things that need to withstand elements (outdoors, etc) we use the Oracal 651 or Series 51. We carry all of those in our shop and you can find them at this link - expressionsvinyl.com/
Hi Nettra, no, the way we had it set up it would have been the same. You would have just applied them in a different order. Please let us know if there is anything additional we can assist you with.
Hi Regina, yes, if you just barely applied it you will still be able to remove the tabs. They don't adhere completely that quick. It will work great. Please let us know if you have any additional questions.
Hi Shyma, we actually cut this with vinyl and then transferred it on to our project with Transfer Tape. Here is a link to the vinyl - expressionsvinyl.com/adhesive-craft-vinyl/ Please let us know if you have any additional questions.
Hi Jasmine, you can still layer the same way with different types of transfer tape. If it is difficult to see through the transfer tape (paper transfer tape is more opaque) then you could also layer using weeding boxes. Here are a couple of videos we have done with that. Silhouette - ruclips.net/video/j1PuhaBZS8w/видео.html Cricut - ruclips.net/video/ziHunuT2LXg/видео.html Transfer Tape - expressionsvinyl.com/transfer-tape/
Hi Robyn, If you are familiar with the advanced cutting mode I would definitely go with that. You would have to just make sure your tab is a different color and make sure both layers are turned on when cutting. That could be a separate video in itself, but definitely save some time.
If someone hasn't already asked ---- would it be possible for you to do this exact same video, only using Version 4? It would so much appreciated. Thanks!! :-)

Yay!!! That is awesome Amie! Great job! Thanks for watching. :)

So far your video has been the simplest to understand but most helpful for me as a cricut newbie!
Love this. Thanks for going step-by-step explaining the use of registration tabs. Perfect! I will be doing this in Canvas but your very clear instructions are very transferable to my software. Thanks again.
You're welcome!
Great job teaching! Love every video I’ve seen her do. Very thorough!
Thank You so much!
Omg, you are a natural at teaching! Straight to the lesson! Thank you.

Thanks Rebecca! Glad we could help!
I so agree!I was about to give up on layering
Loved your video.
It was great for a new beginner like myself and the detailed step by step is amazing..
You are welcome! Thanks for tuning in!
Thank you so much! I'm new to Silhouette & was afraid of layering. You made it look simply & easy. I can't wait to get started.

Haha. Am I the only one who noticed she deleted the middle pink "love" in the demo but then cut it correctly with the word in it.
:) Caught me! I was deleting things so fast, I deleted too much.
I caught it;)
Omg it was giving me mega anxiety!!!! Glad I’m not the only one who noticed
Thank you, clearly explained new scriber
We're so glad to hear that!

How do you do layering with iron on for fabric? do you still use the boxed to line up?
Hi Jessica, We have a video on that! Check out this one for setting it up in the software ruclips.net/video/jbsSp06I-lI/видео.html and this one for actually layering the pieces together ruclips.net/video/61jSgAL7Q8w/видео.html

Thank you very much!!!
How does the layers after 1st layer not pull up with the transfer tape with other layers?
The bottom layers should be applied to your surface enough, that the transfer tape will not pick them up.
Would it have came out differently starting with another color?
Hi Nettra, no, the way we had it set up it would have been the same. You would have just applied them in a different order. Please let us know if there is anything additional we can assist you with.
How would this work for permanent vinyl? Would you still be able to remove tabs?
Hi Regina, yes, if you just barely applied it you will still be able to remove the tabs. They don't adhere completely that quick. It will work great. Please let us know if you have any additional questions.
One more question what is the brand name of the transfer paper you used?
Hi Darlene, the transfer tape is the kind we carry on our shop. Here is a link to it - expressionsvinyl.com/transfer-tape/paper/
Do the tabs need to be the?same size? It looked like they were not but I could be wrong🙂
Hi Darlene, yes you would want them all the same size so that you can line them up exactly. Hopefully that helps.
www.expressionsvinyl.com
Hi! did you print this on regular paper then use transfer tape?
Hi Shyma, we actually cut this with vinyl and then transferred it on to our project with Transfer Tape. Here is a link to the vinyl - expressionsvinyl.com/adhesive-craft-vinyl/
Please let us know if you have any additional questions.
How would one do this on standard transfer tape to makea decal?
Hi Jasmine, you can still layer the same way with different types of transfer tape. If it is difficult to see through the transfer tape (paper transfer tape is more opaque) then you could also layer using weeding boxes. Here are a couple of videos we have done with that.
Silhouette - ruclips.net/video/j1PuhaBZS8w/видео.html
Cricut - ruclips.net/video/ziHunuT2LXg/видео.html
Transfer Tape - expressionsvinyl.com/transfer-tape/
Is there a reason to not use the Advanced Cutting mode on this?
Hi Robyn, If you are familiar with the advanced cutting mode I would definitely go with that. You would have to just make sure your tab is a different color and make sure both layers are turned on when cutting. That could be a separate video in itself, but definitely save some time.
Do you have to have the designer edition program to do this?
Hi Sandy, no you do not. You can do this in the basic edition.
If someone hasn't already asked ---- would it be possible for you to do this exact same video, only using Version 4? It would so much appreciated. Thanks!! :-)
Thanks, we will work on that.
sorry that word should be Buy -- not Guy the design space!
What transfer tape are you using?
Hi Carrie, she is using the clear transfer tape. You can find it here - expressionsvinyl.com/transfer-tape/clear/
Can you do the same tutorial of this project in design space pleaseeeeeeeeee!!!
That is a great idea. We actually have one that is similar and will be posting it soon. Stay tuned.
how would you do this as heat press
Hi Bernice. The layering for Heat Transfer Vinyl (Iron On) that you use a heat press for is done a little different. Here is a link to a video that you may find helpful - ruclips.net/video/61jSgAL7Q8w/видео.html
If I wanted a multi-cut of each layer,what will I do?
Courtney, You can copy and paste each layer. Then arrange them on your cutting space so they fit.
Not sure about silhouette but Cricut while on the cutting mat you can select number of copies just like you would on a printer, so you could make multiple copies at one time. Great tool especially when they will all fit on the same mat.
is this as easy to do with a Brother ScannCut??
Hi Trudy, Honestly I have never used a scanncut. That is a great question! Hoping someone that is familiar with one will chime in. :)
I have the ScannCut with Sure Cuts A Lot 4 software. I don't have the Pro software which has a weeding box feature so you have to create a rectangle to create a weeding box. Hope that makes sense. The cutting would be the same.
AMAZING TIP thank you so much HUGGS
I'm confused as to how you got the color design on the top. When I open the design, it doesn't show the design in color above it.
Nicole, I filled it all in. If you start watching about 50 seconds in I show you how it came into my program and how I had to fill in all the colors.
Thanks
ALSO, BECAUSE I'M NEW. IT SEEMS LIKE YOU ARE GOING WAY TOO FAST ON WHAT YOU'RE CLICKING ON IN THE COMPUTER UP ABOVE. DO YOU HAVE A MORE BEGINNER VIDEO?
What brand vinyl and transfer tape is that? Awesome video!!
Thanks! I am using our clear transfer tape It has been my favorite clear!! expressionsvinyl.com/new-clear-transfer-tape-12in-x-30ft-roll.html
Expressions Vinyl and are you using oracal 651?
Oh sorry I missed the what type of vinyl question. I am using a mix of Oracal 651 and our glitter adhesive vinyl. expressionsvinyl.com/ultra-glitter-vinyl-sheets.html
this is way to complicated!
