This video gives a step-by-step tutorial on how to layer heat transfer vinyl onto a t-shirt. Jessica gives an example showing which types of vinyl can be used for this project.
The vinyl mentioned in this video is easyweed, stripflock, holographic, glitter and metallic heat transfer vinyl. This video focuses on layering easyweed on top of stripflock.
Jessica talks about her struggle during her first few attempts with the black background layer shrinking. This problem can be avoided by layering easyweed on top of stripflock.
She then proceeds to fold the t-shirt in half to make sure she knows her design is centered. It’s important to make sure you don’t press your vinyl too long or it could ruin the adhesive backing. It’s also important to remember that stripflock, which is used as the bottom layer, is a cold peel. Wait a few minutes for the garment to cool and then peel off your carrier sheet.
Line up each layer in the correct spot and don’t forget to protect the bottom layer with some multi-use paper. Continue this process until each layer is on your garment. To make sure everything is adhered properly once every layer is down, press the complete design for a full 10 seconds.
This tutorial is demonstrated with a heat press, but a regular home iron can also be used.

This is the 2nd video of yours that I have seen today. I don't understand why I haven't seen you before, but I like your presentation. You are clear, concise, understandable and minus all the loud music others seem to think should go in a tutorial. Thank you.
We're glad you found us and that our tutorials are helpful. Thanks for tuning in!
And minus the five minute introductory monologue most tutorials think are necessary.
Just getting into heat transfer - literally a couple of days into it. I was struggling like crazy to get things centered and whatnot. Not once did I think about folding the shirt....
Glad I found this video!
Yeah, we're glad you found us!
THE FOLD IDEA FOR CENTER! So simple it's brilliant. THANK YOU.
Great video. Easy to follow. I can't understand why someone would dislike this tutorial.
The best tutorial on layers AND on the different types of vinyl for layering. I loved it! Thank you so much for this!
You're welcome! Thanks for tuning in!
You did a wonderful job of explaining what you were doing, while you were doing it. You are very articulate and that really helps to understand what you are doing. Thank you for doing this.
You are very welcome, Jackie!
Your crease trick made my life so much easier!!!
Glad I could help!
This looked so difficult to me until I watched you do it.🤦🏻♀️Thanks so much!
I immediately liked and subscribed like 2 minutes in, but I wished I could have seen the cutting process. I know the pros get that part but I still have issues with that part of the layering. Great tips in this video!
This one shows modification of designs in the program up to sending to the cutting machine and then applying it to the shirt. ruclips.net/video/qYxTxJU7lvg/видео.html and this shows more from the beginning to end. ruclips.net/video/uCuFjANhjXI/видео.html I hope that helps!
i'm just getting into this and was petrified about making various layers of color. The tips you've shared have made this sooooo much easier. Thank you.
New to all this learning just for family and fun projects. What a great video. So clear! That cube turned out like I imagine everyone wants one now ;) Thank you for sharing/helping.
I'm so impressed with how easy your videos are to follow!!! Thank you!
You are very welcome.
Great video.i never thought of doing something as easy as folding and pressing the shirt and the VHT to get the center.i always set my images a little off.thank you for posting this video.
Thank you for watching!
Me too, lol so simple!
Okay this was awesome, I was praying you could do a multi colored design with vinyl so I won’t have to screen print them. Thank you so much for this!
We're so glad to hear it helped!
Amazing tutorial. Thank you so much. I know this video was from 4 years ago, but it’s ok. Very informative in explaining each vinyl. I am actually going to save this video to watch it again. Lol. Thank you very much. Great video!!!
Thank you for this video. Do you have the pattern for the Rubik’s cube? I want to make one.
We do not have a cut file for the Rubik's cube.
This is the best video I have seen about layering! You did a fantastic job explaining all the steps especially my question on how to not burn the already placed HTV. Going to order the multi-use paper now!! Thanks
We're so glad to hear it helped!
You were fantastic on the instructions. I'm excited to do my layered shirt. Thank you!
Awesome! Thank you!
Nice video. Just a suggestion. I print my template on overhead projector paper. as I place each layer, I lay the clear projector paper over the layer of my design just to make sure its lined up just right, then remove the template before I press. :)
What a great idea, thanks for the tip!
my-MADART hmm is it possible that you complete video showing
my-MADART what's the name of the pressing machine,it's my first time watching this,it's so awesome 😁
How?
omg wow this video was great and all, but I am so glad I read the comments because this tip is exactly what I needed thank you!!
I love the fold trick. Thank you for your that.
Thanks for sharing! Just starting with HTV and learning about layering with your video has been fun and enlightening🎉
Glad it was helpful!
Hi, I live in Brazil and miss more explanation about this material and it was very good your video you are to be congratulated , I'm learning how to work with vinyl and I was very explanatory video . Another inscribed on your channel. Thank you.
thank you for breaking this down. You have amazing patience.
Great video on doing multi-layer HTV shirts. I did notice that you don't pre-heat the shirt before applying the background. I am wondering if this was the cause of the shrinking on the problem shirts. I have done a number of multilayer shirts and have not seen this type of problem. I would definitely recommend a good 10 second press (cotton or cotton blends) before doing the first layer to prevent shrinkage of the shirt under the vinyl when the first layer is applied. For more heat sensitive synthetics it should not be as much of an issue because they don't absorb so much moisture. It is also interesting to note that red shirts will often color shift darker when you drive out the moisture. This is a temporary effect due to the dyes used for red but will return to the normal shade when the moisture level normalizes.
Thank You for your feedback. We also recommend the pre-pressing on the shirts to prevent shrinking.
thank you so much, you made this look a lot less complicated
You are very welcome!
Such a big help thanks! Supporting from NZ!
great vid! i ordered some htv from you and i’m loving it, however i’m running into a snag with layering. using the slice method, i line my layers up perfectly on my shirt, however when i press them with heat they seem to slightly shrink, leaving open space between the layers. do you have any tips for this? thanks!
Tacking each layer down with a few seconds of heat until the full amount with the last layer will help reduce the shrinkage, but there will still likely be some shrinkage, even slightly.
Thank you so much for sharing this video! I have a layering project to do and I’m nervous.
Great video! Learned a lot from it. I’m planning on making the Rubik’s cube for my grandson and was wondering if easy weed STRETCH can be used instead of strip flock or is strip flock best to use for this project! Thank you
Absolutely! We recommend applying the the stretch with a heat press (instead of an iron or cricut press)
Thanks for your tips. I really have learned a lot about layering vinyl.
You make it look so easy
Awesome video. Do you have a video explaining how you design this image? And separate the layers on the software that you use?
Thanks so much !!!
Yes! Check it out! ruclips.net/video/jbsSp06I-lI/видео.html
Thanks for the tips great to see a complex design done!
Thank u for video! Have u ever had a hard time with a certain color easyweed not sticking well to shirt? The last few times I have used white easyweed it doesn't stick to my shirt it peels off and I peel hot not cold.
We personally have not had any issues with a certain color not having the same adhesive properties as another color, however, that's not to say there couldn't have been a bad batch of White EasyWeed. If you purchased from us please sure to let us know next time and we will make it right:)
Yes I do all orders with you! Thank you
Hi I’m new to iron on. I’ve gotten to be a pro at wine glasses, tumblers and signs lol but now I’m working on these Christmas shirts for my boys. It’s now Christmas morning and I’m finally ready to iron everything on but I’m so scared I’m going to let it up and ruin the shirt so I’m watching videos after videos. I love your video. I have a ? About the flock weed I think you said it was. Is that kind of like a base you use? Do you use flock stuff all the time even if you’re only using 1 color? Or so you use that when you’re using several colors? Sorry for all the questions. Thank you!!!!
Hi Alicia, we happened to use it on this one because we wanted the back color to stand out a bit. It is not something that we use on everything. One recommendation we have when pressing quite a few different things to a shirt is to only press the layers for 2-3 seconds at the most until you get to that last layer. On the last layer then you can press it longer. Otherwise you run the risk of it possibly shrinking or ruining the adhesive by too much heat for too long. Hopefully that helps a little. Please let us know if you have any additional questions.
Great presentation.
Great video demonstration! Love it.
You habe a subscriber here. Gracias totales
Thanks for your tutorial! What brand/model of heat press are you using?
we are using a digital clam heat press from Siser.
Great tutorial...easy to understand and follow.
Really nice video and the shirt looks great but, can you make a video how cut the vinyl color by color or step by step thank you and blessings
Hi, we do have a video for that. Here is the link - ruclips.net/video/jbsSp06I-lI/видео.html
I've been so intimidated about doing HTV, is there a particular HTV I should begin with? I do have a sample pack of your products just so I can start, I believe it is easy weed. Also, do all cuts, even those without wording need to be mirrored? Probably a dumb question, I just want to be sure, I do it correctly. Are all the HTV products "beginner" friendly? I thank you so very much for your info vids and your store. Thank you also for your time, May the New Year bring you Much Rewards!
Nice tutorial. My wife is just starting out and I'd like to get her a good heat press. Seen a lot on Amazon with mixed reviews that I don't trust. Which are you using in this video and does it accept attachments?
Here is a link to the press she is using. It does not accept attachemts. expressionsvinyl.com/tools-accessories/heat-presses-and-pillows/
Hi. Can I ask where did u find the rubic cube svg ? I really like that shirt and would love to make it. Good job by the way on explaining
how do you print the separate layers
? Do you have any videos about that too? Thanks,
Here is a screen cast of creating layers to cut on the Silhouette ruclips.net/video/jbsSp06I-lI/видео.html
Thanks for your quick response. I will check those out.
Great video!! I've learned so much from this.
The white highlights on the 2nd rubiks cube shirt looks sick! I thought it was intentional
Some people don't know that "Sick" can be a compliment. I know She is not that old, but something tells me that She might not know it's a compliment. 👊😁👍
Can you cut some film then layer then 2 colors then heat press? So instead of 6x presses you only presses it 3x...yellow green then press and blue white then press then last the red orange
The issue will be the carrier sheet. It covers the design. If you try to layer a color over the carrier sheet, it will stick to the carrier sheet.
@@Expressionsvinyls thats why you cut carrier sheet for the other color...
What heat press do you use? How do you divid it up into separate layers?
heat press: expressionsvinyl.com/red-digital-11-x-15-clam-heat-press-ships-separately/
How to layer! ruclips.net/video/j1PuhaBZS8w/видео.html
Pretty good! Excellent! I love it! Congratulations and thank you so much!
Would you happen to have videos showing how you designed everything in Design Space?
Hi, we do not have this specific project in Design Space but we could do one similar that will walk through the same types of steps for creating layers in an uploaded image.
May I ask why you aren’t using registration marks for layering instead of eyeballing the image?
Registration marks are great for layering. The 1st layer did make eyeballing the rest of the layers easier.
Trying my first tshirt and you make look so easy.. I'm so scared. How do each color stay where it's supposed to?
Each color is applied separately activating the adhesive to keep it in place until the final piece is added and the full heat, time, and pressure is applied for best results.
Hi EV! I just did a four layered dino on a t-shirt using some Siser Easyweed- It was super hard to peel up the carrier sheet without the vinyl coming up with it and I ended up with a bubble in the design?!?!? I followed the instructions you sent with the vinyl and the steps in the video- I used a teflon sheet with each press. What happened? Can I fix it? THANKS!
Adding the fold trick for my products thank you!
I watched this back when I first started... thinking... noy Ill never be able to do that... watching this now... still like...ummmmm lol I need to make a cube... love the 3d effect!
Since the easyweed shrunk, could avoid that by making your bottom layer a little too big? I don’t have stripflock
If you are using the Easyweed as the bottom layer you will only tack it on for 2 seconds then do the other layers. This way it does not shrink to much by the time you have all of the layers on,
Can you link a video of how to cut the vinyl for layering please
Here is the video that is used for this project ruclips.net/video/jbsSp06I-lI/видео.html
Im impressed. You did an awesome job on that shirt!
Thanks!
Hi I'm starting to do iron on vinyl decals on t-shirts. I was wondering what heat press you used specifically??
We used the Siser heat press. Here's a link for it :) expressionsvinyl.com/tools-accessories/heat-presses-and-pillows/
@@Expressionsvinyls thank you so much I'll look into that.
it looks so cool. I am gonna get this down packed
Thank you for the tutorial. It was excellent. I learned a lot.
what would the temperature need yo be if i use a cricut easy press. i believe its called. I'm trying to make a shirt for my brother birthday. :)
Here is a link to the settings you will use with the Siser HTV expressionsvinyl.com/machine-settings/.
Hello! Thank you for the video! This is awesome! I want to try this technique but before I start, I was wondering if there is a maximum of layers I can use for the same design? If I have 8 layers for example, is it to much?
8 layers will make the image pretty thick. If you are wanting this many layers. We would suggest doing the knockout/ slice method. This way it looks layered but it isn't.
@@Expressionsvinyls Alright! Thank you for your answer! :)
Great Video!!!! Thanks!!
Great video!! Thank you!
Where can I purchase this SVG? I love it and I really love how you are so detailed in explaining and your presentation... Thank You!!
Thank you! Found this by googling for Rubik's cube!
Do u have video where u design the layers I'm trying to do this with the mom life autism headband and Glasses
Check these out! ruclips.net/video/DbazL_akHAA/видео.html ruclips.net/video/qYxTxJU7lvg/видео.html
Hi, one question, the Vinil sheets that you wear on the shirt
are the same as those used for glass stikers
Hello, no. For the shirts you will want heat transfer vinyl expressionsvinyl.com/siser-heat-transfer-vinyl/
For the adhesive vinyl for hard surfaces such as glass you would want to use an outdoor permanent adhesive vinyl expressionsvinyl.com/permanent-adhesive-vinyl/
What has been your experience with the longevity of siser heat vinyl? Any guestimate to how long a shirt will last / how many washes?
We have done some pretty lengthy testing of Siser materials. EasyWeed, Stretch, Stripflock and Electric have lasted and maintained their integrity well over 30 washes. The Glitter, Metallic and Holographic tend to last 15-20 washes, as they are thicker they have a tendency to crack or lift over time. Hope that helps!
Love your video! Aren't you supposed to wash the shirts before pressing them?
Hi Jennifer, it is recommended but we have a lot of success with them both ways. Thank you for tuning in today!
Thank you so much!! I appreciate it!
Great video. Do you have one that shows how to cut the pieces?
We sure do! ruclips.net/video/jbsSp06I-lI/видео.html
Thank you much
Great video, thanks❣️What is the multi use paper? I tried to read your response on someone else’s question, but I could not open that answer - I don’t know why.
The multi Use paper is what you would use while your are adding numerous layers on a shirt. The first layer is great with just the clear carrier sheet. However, on the other layers, if you have exposed layers you will want to make sure that you have them covered and they don't get the direct heat from the heat press or iron. Here is the link to it - expressionsvinyl.com/multi-use-paper-12x20-sheet/ You can use it over and over.
Great video! So helpful for a newbie. Thanks so much.
Do you get creases from the carrier sheet in your vinyl? Or does the shorter press time on laying prevent that...
Hi Jamie, great question. The shorter press time will prevent that. Then on your last layer you can peel the carrier sheet and cover the entire thing with a multi use paper and press it just for 2-3 seconds to really smooth it out. Hopefully this helps.
expressionsvinyl.com/multi-use-paper-12x20-sheet/
Thank you. Can you tell me what that white paper is you used to cover your project and where I can buy it?
She used the multi-use paper for this project expressionsvinyl.com/multi-use-paper-12x20-sheet/
Expressions Vinyl Thank you!
Just curious, what’s the manufacturing cost for this shirt with all the different layers?
Do you create and print your own designs? What software, printer, paper and ink do you use? And does it fade or peel with washing?
The image in this video is cut out of vinyl. Are you wanting vinyl that you can use an inkjet printer with to print and cut designs?
@@Expressionsvinyls Oh, so how did you design and cut your image? Do you need a machine or was this done with a template and you cut it out?
Yes, I was wondering how to design something, and print it out onto vinyl to attach the design to clothing to sell.
@@rosedawson3520 on this project she used the Silhouette Cameo 3 and the Silhouette software to cut and design the image. She got the image off of a google search. Here is the video showing how she created the image to cut. ruclips.net/video/jbsSp06I-lI/видео.html
Excellent video! Very helpful !! THANK YOU!! All the "um"s were a bit distracting, though.
We're glad you liked it and thank you for the feedback. We'll work on that.
Great video, how many layers maxim can you apply on top of easy weed ?
We have done as many as 6-8, however, each layer makes the design bulkier.
Wow! Beautiful!
What brand of heat press is used in the video? I am looking to purchase one and I like that one
Hi, this is the heat press that we are using - expressionsvinyl.com/tools-accessories/heat-presses-and-pillows/
Can you get the clear plastic HTV that your designs are on separate with out the vinyl?
Hi Sue! There are places where you can purchase heat transfer "transfer tape" which is virtually the same thing as the clear carrier sheet. Maybe if I understood what you were wanting to use it for I would best be able to assist you. Thanks for watching!
That was a great video. Thank you for your Time and sharing your professional advise and techniques. I appreciate it.
You are welcome! We're glad it helped!
stripflock is to make the image look 3D???? what the purpose exactly or can you do all htv on cotton with the same design?? thankyou
You would be able to use any HTV that you would like for this image.
This video is full of great tricks! Thank you! I am just doing my research before starting HTV, and this really made me feel a bit less nervous-- though I am going to start out with a much easier project. Question... what is multi-use paper?
Glad it helped! The Multi-use paper from Siser is for making multi layered heat transfer applications. Designed to protect lower layers from damage in the application process.
This paper can be re-usable.
Thanks for the lovely demonstration. How long does the vinyl take long to fade? Thanks so much in advance. Thumbs up indeed
If the vinyl is applied correctly it will last longer than the shirt. :) The colors do not fade.
How is the rubix cube vinyl? Vinyl is sticky once you use the transfer tape
It's heat transfer vinyl
Very easy to learn, great job👍👍👍👍👍
What a wonderful video. Thank you!
I always get on the wagon last after the craze is gone....so now I am starting with this and waiting for my cameo [bought from some-one who lost interest]...
Great video! I want to make t-shirts now☺
Thanks! Once you start making your own shirts you'll never go back to buying screen print tees! Have fun:)

Amazing tutorial
Thank you SO much great teacher!!
Your press is beautiful! Mine is so banged up and ugly! What brand is it?
Hi, here is the link to the one we carry and use all the time. expressionsvinyl.com/tools-accessories/heat-presses-and-pillows/
Great video. Can this be done with a regular iron instead of a press? I'd love to personalize tshirts, but don't have the room to set up and store a large press. Plus, I'm just planning on doing small, individual projects. Are the vinyls available at any craft store, or are they specialty items that must be ordered from you or other specific vendors?
Hi, yes you can do this with an iron as well. They work great as not everyone has the room or money for a press. Here is a video that covers that - ruclips.net/video/AUvJX-jVJqI/видео.html Hopefully it helps.
Great work
What kind of multi-use paper do you use? Also where do you buy your vinyl from?
