I am a former bicycle mechanic who left the industry before SRAM double tap shifters appeared. I started using them about a year ago and tonight I need to replace a gear cable. Cue RUclips. I've got Rival 11 spd shifters but I am sure the technique will be the same. Thank you for a simple clear demonstration. Now it's out to the shed ....
.... Back from the shed. It all worked a treat. In other places people have talked about the difficulty of getting the cut end of a cable to go around the curve inside the lever. I just spun the cable between my fingers to keep it wound as I pushed it in. Didn't need pliers. Like many things, it's easy once you know how and Carthy did that part nicely.
I'm switching out a friend's chainrings/cassette/chain/cables/housing on her SRAM Apex. Everything was going great until I tried to put in new shift cables. They wouldn't go! Thanks for posting your excellent video and now, job done.
Very nice explanation and good filming all things considered :) Very annoying that i have to log on to RUclips to be able to figure this out, and i`ve done this before mind you. Gonna hose down the unit with some lubricating spray, FTW !
Well i`m back because i`m stuck again :( Need to replace my SRAM Apex front derailleur cable this time which seems a bit trickier. I just got this bright little idea. What if i shear the cable end of with my cable cutter in a way that there is a sharp pointy edge instead of just the flat typical shear you usually get. Should be able to sneak it in much easier this way...i think.
So I went 1x so I can't help you there. My video was part of my cx conversion to 1x where I installed a 10 speed SRAM GX derailleur, replaced cassette with a 11-32t, replace chainrings with a 40t and replace left shifter with a Tektro brake lever. Good luck with your project.
Well i got there in the end but it bugs me how hard it was getting it threaded in properly. Had to pry back the hood and route the cable all over to get it to fit. A bit of a pain in the ass to be honest. Cheers from Norway.
My SRAM Apex lever doesn’t look like that. The cable exits behind the bracket inside the lever housing and it’s going to be a pain in the A**e to thread the new cable through. Hence why I’m on RUclips. No such issues with Shimano. I hate SRAM 😡

Thanks! I worked out how to do this 6 years ago when I built my bike, but I've completely forgotten how it worked now. A much needed refresher!

Simple clean easy to follow instructions. Worked well for me thank you.
Thank you, I couldn't work out how to get the cable in but your technique worked like a charm. Awesome, saved me a load of hassle 😀👍
Thank you from Melbourne Australia- The pliers trick worked for me.
Thank you girl on the internet. Appreciate it.
Superb explanation and video showed exactly what to do. Thanks!
The mechanic in Giant shop did this in a hillarious 15 mins. I'd watch this vid next time when I change frameset, thanks.
LOL. Mechanics come in all levels of experience. At least they put in a sincere effort.
This video was very helpful. Thanks!
nice video, thank you Carthy!
You're welcome!
You helped me. Thanks 👍
Thanks for the video!

My Apex shifters are from 2014. What year/model are yours? I'm sure a few things have changed since. Shimano products definitely are well designed.
