    Great content. People still say only Ford lug nuts swell. I work at a Ford dealer and handle a lot of used cars and other makes in the service bays. I’ve had GM’s where I needed a 22, 22.5, and 23mm to remove the lugs, and then Mopar’s that I needed the 19, 19.5, and 20mm I use on a lot of really crusty old Ford’s.

    I have another possibility why this is an issue. I read somewhere (and of course I cannot remember where) that these type of lug nuts should not be used with an impact. But as we all know, some mechanics know better than the manual which was written by the same individual(s) that designed the "product."

    • @TheEnthusiastMechanic
      @TheEnthusiastMechanic  2 года назад +1

      I've read that as well! I do know almost every mechanic will use a power tool on them because of the way were paid based off productivity the quicker we can do a job the more we earn so that's why I have these sockets to do the job quick.

    • @nigel_white
      @nigel_white 2 года назад +3

      I made the mistake of using an impact gun on my OEM Camaro lug nuts, which also have caps on them. I track the car and take the wheels on and off fairly frequently to check brake wear. I quickly noticed it was getting harder and harder to get the socket on and off the nuts and upon examining the nuts I could see that the caps were being deformed from the impacts. Since then I always break the lugs nuts loose by hand first, and no more issues.

    • @Quagigitymire
      @Quagigitymire 2 года назад +2

      It's entirely due to cheap manufacturing and poor engineering. stamping a piece of shit mm thin cosmetic cap ontop of the lug was flat out stupid, but certainly cheaper than a solid metal lugnut.

  • @marvinwiens2774
    @marvinwiens2774 2 года назад +6

    A mechanic for 50 years I have seen this many times. I disagree that it is a rust issue, It is caused by distortion of the outer cap from removal and reinstallation and, as stated below, the impact wrench is a major contributor. Unlike below, it is not an issue of "mechanics know better" but time! We (and the shop) get paid flat rate (a set dollar per job) no matter how long it takes. and I have been ordered to do it fast; not Correct. The time is determined by a FAST guy doing one job on a brand new vehicle with every tool set up to go in the fastest time possible doing it 6 times in a row, and the fastest time is the flat rate time. Mechanics who do not PERFORM are let go. The dealership(s) I worked for under went a revision in which all flat rate times were reduced by 35% All 3 hr flat rate jobs became a 2 hr paid job at a stroke of a pen to boost corporate profits. This results in 5 minute check nothing oil changes and parking lot tuneups, where nothing is done!

    • @TheEnthusiastMechanic
      @TheEnthusiastMechanic  2 года назад

      Yes with labor times getting lower and lower mechanics are always going to race against the clock and try and beat the time therefore they will rush and issues like this happen,

    • @RichardFallstich
      @RichardFallstich 2 года назад +1

      Whether it's rust, corrosion, impact tools, poor fitting sockets etc. etc. - does it really matter, the end result is the same. The outer cap (typically thin-wall stainless) swells from some cause and a socket no longer fits. Or if a socket can be fit onto the cap, it just spins on the inner steel nut. This was such a huge problem with Ford, there was a class action lawsuit against Ford in 2017 claiming that the swollen and delaminated lug nuts couldn’t be safely driven. The court overseeing the case dismissed it noting that plaintiffs had failed to provide sufficient facts or legally viable claims.

      These aren't what we put on our trucks. We put threaded or push on covers that come off by hand and are not part of the lug nut itself and never were. The push ons grip the side wall of the lug nut and the threaded ones screw onto the stud threads sticking out beyond the lug nut.
      It's an extra step, sure, but nothing like these two piece lug nuts that were manufactured together.
