Stunning pictures, great music. I just found out that tomorrow's a public holiday and seeing this video in the evening just complemented that excitement. I use the M240 and have been on the brim about topping over to M6. But after this video I realise it doesn't matter which camera you use. At least not as much as the eye behind the lens.
Loved the way you did the comparisons! Showing both shots side by side and then punching in one at a time was a super helpful way to compare the two mediums. Some frames I preferred the extra pop of the digital sensor; other shots I preferred the texture of film. But I enjoyed them all! Looking forward to more videos like this. Idea for future video: rent an M11 and compare with your M6?
Claire was incredible! I typically shoot with my M240 also but I really like how the noise looks on the film shots. It seems that you could easily edit the digital files to look identical to the film, if thats the goal, due to the great sensor on the 240!
I have both cameras and have compared prints extensively, prints at 8X10 look the same but as soon as you go bigger the M240 destroys the prints from the M6 on film. You can always color match the M240 to film if you want as well. I love film but the M240 is just better. It is like comparing medium format resolution to 35mm resolution. The M240 can print big and keep the detail much more.
Aaron, another great video! It's pretty cool how similar the images look, well same lens. Love, Love, Love, the grain on the Portra 800, funny we think of 24MP as the low end these days but compared to the film, it pretty crispy. It might be fun to put that lens on a Sony A7R or a Fuji GFX and see how well it resolves, clearly it's more than sharp enough for 24MP.
Ahhh Prince he was from my hometown. Some of your pics looks Minneapolis bound. River place and the bridge by Nicolet island. Lived there for year but migrated to FL
The flexibility of the M240 files is super nice. Here they're basically just default, and there's tons of tonal range and level of detail to play with. Green is the only color that gives me some trouble with my M240. It really likes to push greens super crazy, but then not push the green channel in any other colors lol. If there's green in a scene, I often have to adjust the green channel. If there is little/no green, I often have to slide the tint down away from magenta. Bizarre. Otherwise, I love the M240 colors. I love portra colors more, though.
great comparison (nice shots too btw). I shoot performance, bands etc., and shoot Canon digital (often at 3200 to 8000 iso) and shoot portra and cinestill in my M3, with the Voightlander 50mm f/2 APO when I can. I just bought a M240 to have a middle ground between the Canon and film. Colors / tonality seemed excellent on the 240. very reassuring. thanks much. very helpful.
I like the color better in the digital images, but I'm really drawn to the film images. They seem to have better detail and the background depth is more interesting. Sorry, I'm not a photographer... I don't know the technical names for the things I like about the images. Another great video, Aaron!
Thanks! Yes I agree, the digital images are true to life colors and look really pleasing and the film has this extra depth to it. The reason I chose the thumbnail photos was because I like how the background was rendering. There is more detail in the blur which I like!
Great video. I just bought the M240 for the filmish look it gives to some of the more modern cameras. But I curious though, are these plain jpg or raw or is it the "smooth color film" mode for jpg? Thanks:)
Thank you, I appreciate it! I shot them in RAW and did very minor adjustments to get the levels and curves to my liking. I didn’t mess with color/Hue/saturation/WB or anything. The JPGs look just as nice and smoooooth.
Nice pics, however I would have tried matching the colors of film to the 240. Perhaps a 1/3 to 2/3 underexposed would match the 240. To be honest I am not a big fan of high contrast images most times. It sometimes works well. But you were doing a comparison of both cameras and high contrast images made the M6 look bad like there was something wrong with it. It didn’t seem like a fair comparison. In any case thanks for sharing.
You consider these high contrast images??? I stated at the start I did not care about matching colors. I wanted to see what the digital camera would give me versus what a Lab would give me with the scanned film.
Great shots and a great video. I have the M240 and a range of film cameras (but no Leica for film). I'm curious how you processed the digital files. I know you said very light processing, did you just adjust things like contrast, shadow and highlights? How did you process them? Thank you so much.
Thanks for the comment, I wanted to make sure to keep color and everything looking natural and as close to straight out of camera so I only did a slight s-curve which did introduce a very small amount of contrast, and then I just leveled out the levels by dragging the arrows to the "start of the mountain" if that makes sense.
I have a Leica M6 TTL, but I'm on the fence about keeping it or selling it to fund a Leica M240 or M262. While I do love when the conditions are ideal and I can make gorgeous images on Kodak Ektachrome with it, sometimes I just feel like I want the flexibility of changing ISO at will if I want to shoot both indoors and outdoors on a given day. I've been curious about the Voigtlander 50mm f1.5 II lens, and from your video it looks like it renders nicely on the M240. I have the Voigtlander 50mm f1.2. I do love the results I get with it. But I don't like the size/weight of it when mounted on the Leica body. Although when mounted on my Sony A7S with an adapter, the ergonomics/weight just feel better than when using it on the Leica. So I've also been contemplating selling the 1.2 and switching to the 1.5.
If I could only keep one it would 100% be the M6. The film M cameras have more magic for me. I feel like I can get very nice results with pretty much any modern digital system, but nothing feels like an M film body IMO, can't be replicated. I'd recommend the f1.5 for sure, it feels really nice and for it not having a focusing tab, I enjoy focusing with it and it's extremely accurate. I would say there is like a 20% softness wide open but it's still great IMO and it's stellar at f2. I only took 20 frames on the Portra and only had one miss focus. Thanks for watching! Nikon vs Contax coming soon.
Looking at the Portra shots and thinking back to my days in the one-hour lab, it looks like your C-41 lab’s chemistry is weak and nearing exhaustion. You might want to try another lab for better color saturation.
Yes have to agree, there's a bit of yellow shift? I watched it originally on an old 32" LCD TV in my office and then again on my MacBook Pro 13" Film images look a little off, could be the scan, maybe?
To me it looks like the scans were sharpened by the lab, I'm going to look into it. I don't mind the colors but I'd agree, they don't look like Portra 800.
Who would have thought, that a film camera could match the performance of a super sensor of 24 MP, and that with a fastiso 800 film? They both produced beautiful results.
Great shots Aaron, it’s hard to pick which is better. The digital shots are so crisp but the film photos have more character.
Great video either way,
Totally agree!

I have an M6 and considering an M240 or MD262. Love this side by side comparison! The colours of the M240 are absolutely stunning!
Thanks for the comment, I 100% agree!
I preferred the m6 film shots across the board. The digital shots felt a lot flatter with less 3d popping to my eyes. Great shots man.
Great video! Loved the comparison.

The goal wasn’t to match the look, just a fun comparison with film vs digital with M cameras and the same lens 😎

Very cool comparison!!! I hope you make M11 vs M6🙏🙏🙏

I'm thinking of making another 'adapting lenses' video.

I’m surprised that I’m saying this but I prefer the look from Portra in your test.
The film is more organic , digital has nice colour rendition though. Both are great !👍
Totally agree!
The M240 photos were crisper, with greater range of tones and no blown highlights, both the M6 and M240 photos were sharp.
The film is so much better to my eyes...
I don’t know how people still think film is better on a 35mm camera. Let’s just declare this format digital and move on.
I don’t know how people still shoot only digital, don’t print anything and have only digital in their hands.
Lol garbage opinion
