- This Is Home is the tenth track from the album i/o. This is the Bright-Side Mix, by Mark 'Spike' Stent, released on the new moon 14 October 2023.

Written and produced by Peter Gabriel, This Is Home is, he says, ‘a love song.’
‘It began with inspiration from some of the great Tamla Motown rhythm sections so we’re trying to recreate that in a modern way, complete with the tambourine and handclaps. The groove I like a lot, Tony Levin does a great bass part there.’
‘I did an unusual thing for me in that I tried doing this low voice / high voice thing, so you get this almost conversational voice at the beginning and the second part is a higher, more emotional voice. I thought that would be both intimate and emotive to put the two side by side.’
Though he doesn’t appear on the final track, some of the early brainstorming for what was to become This Is Home was done with the DJ and producer Skrillex;
‘I’d had a call from Skrillex, who’s a very talented musician, and I thought it would be interesting to see what he had in mind, so he came to my home studio and we sat down and talked and tried to evolve bits and pieces and it was mainly for this song. He was trying to encourage me to write a song about staying up all night in a night club and that sort of thing, but that’s not really my life so I made it more about family and home and I like it. Though we took the song in this other direction it was an interesting experience nonetheless, and I think it is good for me to be taken outside my normal comfort zone sometimes.’
This Is Home features contributions from a Swedish male voice choir called Orphei Drängar, as well as another orchestral arrangement from John Metcalfe;
‘I think it’s got a groove but unlike most pop songs that have a middle eight or bridge this has two and they are both quite different. The first one is atmospheric and dreamy and we have this amazing all male choir which comes in slowly into this dreamy, garden-like section. The choir, Orphei Drängar, are based in Sweden and I think they get a fantastic sound, it’s dark, stirring and emotional. The strings in the other middle section I really like, it’s quite catchy, poppy in a way. I think John picked up on what I was trying to go for there and did a beautiful job, as always.’
This September full moon release comes with artwork from the artist David Moreno and his work ‘Conexión de catedral II’.
‘The artwork this month is a wonderful piece by David Moreno. I was looking for contemporary art that represented the house or home in some ways and we saw a few things but his really stuck out. David often makes these one-colour, house-like symbols with piano wire connecting and I think it is very unique work. This is a relationship song, so given what I was trying to do with the lyric it felt like his image with the two doors was a very natural match. He was up for letting us use it, so I am very grateful to David for that.’
This Is Home comes with differing mix approaches from Mark ‘Spike’ Stent (Bright-Side Mix) here, plus Tchad Blake (Dark-Side Mix), and also Hans-Martin Buff’s Atmos mix (In-Side Mix).

I would say the soundscape he creates here is more in line with something from the mid to late 90's/ early 2000's.

I feel so blessed to have seen (and danced and sung with) you several times. This summer's show in Ireland was pure magic. I understand what you mean, but for my part I only agree 100%, because for the rest that is not said explicitly and is only suggested, I suspect that Peter Gabriel's excellent compositions are not enough. Given the profound involution that the human condition is currently undergoing, disguised as technological progress, we need a much more powerful impulse if we intend to preserve the home of everything we love. IMO

In fact, any time is uncertain for anyone, since the future as it has not yet really happened is unpredictable by definition. But in these times there are predetermined driver programs activated that in many situations make what is going to happen quite predictable. And this is not necessarily a reason for tranquility or joy.
In those cases, uncertainty is preferable.

i/o is Peter's best album since So in my opinion- both bright and dark mixes. This Is Home is one of my favs. Peter sounds great and his band as usual is outstanding. I like playing both the bright and dark mixes, cue them up together- try it. Otherwise, of course both sound great. My fav Peter Gabriel album for me otherwise, is his 2nd produced by Robert Fripp

This was the song I didn't recognize, but loved immediately, at the concert in Vancouver last Saturday. My Mom passed last year, my Dad many years ago. HOME is my memories and the people I feel at home with, and the people who share my memories of home when it was still going to Mom and Dad for major events and celebrations.

First song where I actually like the dark-side mix equally as much as the bright-side mix. This one sounds more adventurous, though the topic home is not really that kind of thing. Otherwise, I'll buy the bright-side album, if there will be such a thing. All sorts of editions, I hope...
@@user-ey6vk5gu4o Four kinds of horses is such a good song that stands great with any mix I think. But still better on the bright-side. The dark side album is more of a stripped down approach which is nice, but doesn't feel whole to me somehow.
@@user-ey6vk5gu4o The album "Subhuman" by Recoil which have a "reduction" mix on the DVD version is the only similar example I remember where it is presented in two versions like this album, it's worth checking out! (If I don't count Shania Twain's UP that had a country and pop version, released the same year as PG's UP lol). Things are not reduced here on the dark side version as much as there, but I always found Peter a pioneer in modern music, so I think it was kinda cool the way he presented it last year song by song, version by version. I know a lot of people didn't like it, but I usually find both the masses and the audiophile's usual reactions too extreme. No offense of course, music is a personal experience.
