  • Road to Joy is the sixth track to be released from Peter Gabriel's his forthcoming album i/o. This is the Bright-Side Mix, by Mark ‘Spike’ Stent.
    lnk.to/PG21
Written by Peter Gabriel and produced by Peter Gabriel and Brian Eno, Road to Joy features Soweto Gospel Choir, a string arrangement from John Metcalfe and contributions from a number of Gabriel’s current touring band; long-time collaborators Tony Levin (bass), David Rhodes (guitar) and Manu Katché (drums) as well as two newer members Don E (bass keys), ‘he did the funkiest bass line that you can imagine’ and Josh Shpak (trumpet), ‘beautiful playing, a super musical guy.’ The song was recorded at Real World Studios, Bath, The Beehive and British Grove, London and High Seas Studios, South Africa.
‘I'm working on a project which is partly a story focused around the brain and how we perceive things and this song connects to that. It deals with near-death experience and locked-in syndrome situations where people are unable to communicate or to move. It's an amazingly frustrating condition. There have been some great books and films about this subject, but at this point in our story the people looking after our hero manage to find a way to wake him up. So, it’s a lyric about coming back into your senses, back to life, back into the world.’
The song is one of the last tracks to emerge for the i/o record, but it has some DNA from an earlier project; ‘It was actually very late in the record that we got to this. There had been a song that musically I'd started, I think, around the OVO project called Pukka. It was very different to this, but it was actually the starting point for coming back to this song. I just felt there was a good groove there, and I wanted something else with rhythm and so we tried a few things when I was working with Brian Eno. The excitement and energy in the song was something that I was getting off on. I felt we didn't have enough of that for this record.’
As with previous full moon releases, Road to Joy comes with an artist of the month, and for this June release that artist is Ai Weiwei and his work ‘Middle Finger in Pink’.
‘I'm a big fan of Ai Weiwei, both as an artist, as a designer and as a human rights campaigner. He's an incredibly brave man and regularly risks the wrath of the Chinese government. But his work is exceptional, often political and quite extraordinary.
When I was hustling him, I think he had absolutely no idea who I was, so it was an uphill battle at first, but he was open to talking and we got to know each other and hang out a little bit.
I was delighted when he agreed to being a part of the i/o project and generously sent us three designs. He has this middle finger image that he uses a lot in his work, and it is often directed to those in power.
He's definitely been at the root end of power, as his father was before him. So that's an important symbol for him and I guess in the context of the story I am now working on, death is the dominant power, and the hero is coming back to life and raising his finger to death.’

Hi Peter! wow! this song reminds me a bit of a "Steam" feel but with a fresh and brilliant layer of choir and strings section, I've liked it a lot...From Barcelona, we are very sad and disappointed about you missing Barcelona on your 2023 tour....I don't know why because since 1986, every time you play here I remember great audiences but...anyway, I am sure there is a reason.

Lyrically this speaks to my emerging from 15 years of drug addiction (aged 50 - 65) and coming back to life and finding joy inside me on my road forward. I’ll be 70 in November and I feel more joy than ever!
Thank you Peter Gabriel for being such an inspiration to me from back since both you and I were in our 20s until this present moment ❤🙏🏻🕉️

So somebody cue up the lyrics will ya please? Okay, fine, I will:
Waking up, waking up, waking up...
Waking up the road to joy
    So as swollen skies
Look for anchors, look for tides
    Sharp sounds swim around
    Soaking into the brittle ground
Been so many days, been held inside this body
Been so many days and there's nothing to do
Been so many days, and you're throbbing at the darkness
Been so many days, I've been waiting for you
    Back in the world
Waking up the road to joy
    Love comes through the walls
Wants the earth wherever it falls
Life's form won't calm you down
    Going in for another round
This is how it goes, I've been listening to the voices
This is how it goes, you were sure I was gone
This is how it goes in a state of meditation
This is how it goes, I've been waiting for you
    Back in the world
Waking up the road to joy
    Back in the world
Walking down the road to joy
The engine stops and silence pours
Fills the holes and cracks, don't fuse
Young and old, girl and boy
Dance along the road to joy
    Picture sharpens in your head
Opens up when it's been read
All the things you strain to see
Come on, darling, come to me
Show your eyes, show your teeth
That's the way to build belief
Touch my hair, touch my knee
You can wake up every part of me
Get the blood to flow in every nook and cranny
Get the blood to flow from my head to my toes
Get the blood to flow, flowing all around me
Get the blood to flow with the life in my soul
    Back in the world
Walking down the road to joy
Just when you think it can't get worse
    The mind reveals the universe
    Opens up a distant star
It gives you straight just who you are
    I'm more a dog, you're more a cat
Then we're getting bored of that
    Alive again, upon a snake
Then we jump into the lake

I/O is a perfect album. It's got pieces of sonic elements that Peter used on all of his previous records, and he comes off with this record in a way like saying "yeah, I'm 74 and I can still teach ANYONE how to make a perfect record, listen and learn". This song is another example of that. Another song of him having fun in a good way. There are a lot of soft and dreamy songs and suddenly he pulls this one out of this pocket and you remember another skill of PG: making a fun-rocking song.

    • @Signal_Glow
      @Signal_Glow 5 месяцев назад +1

Yeah, it is perfect album. I was blown away by the songs AND sound, two mixers (studio engineers) made excellent job at creating bright and dark side mixes, there is another version called In-Side mixes sounding very 3D. PG's standards are so high his 90's production often sound better than what they are doing today.

The middle finger gives the impression Peter is flipping off the ones who said he was old, over the hill, washed up. It's also an incentive for US...ME...and YOU to give the finger to the entire world, just to declare our independence and say we're doing what we want, not what we're told to do or expected to do. Because that is definitely the road to joy.

Halfway through the new album, for what it's worth, here are my thoughts on how i/o fits thematically within the PG oeuvre:
Beginning with PG 3 (MELT) and 4 (SECURITY), Gabriel sang as someone struggling to reconcile the primal and the rational self. I Have the Touch, Shock the Monkey, Family and the Fishing Net, Lead a Normal Life, Family Snapshot, and especially No Self Control and Rhythm of the Heat, all postured Gabriel as an outsider looking into the world, teetering on the thin line of madness and epiphany. The productions were dense but had clarity - as I think PG himself once said, you could still appreciate the melodies of the songs if you were driving with the windows open.
With SO, Gabriel announced his arrival at a point of clarity and confidence. No longer was he overwhelmed by his environment - he was the conqueror: Big Time, Sledgehammer, Excellent Birds, In Your Eyes, were not questions but imperatives. Even the moodier dreamscapes - Mercy Street, Red Rain, Don't Give Up, We Do What We're Told - were sung from the authority of someone who understood the world and how we fit within it. And Lanois's production -- maybe the best mixed album ever - was marked by clarity, as best evinced by the bass in Don't Give Up and Excellent Birds. You felt every fret, and Gabriel's voice was never muddled, always crystal clear.
With US, and then to a greater degree UP, PG turned inward, and the sounds became more muted. Listen to the bass lines and percussion on 14 Black Paintings and Secret World - it was as if they were recorded underwater. And thematically, Gabriel looked inward as well, the songs more confessional and personal. Apart from Steam, US plays like a 50-minute therapy session. And if US was a trip to psychiatrist, UP was a day at the mortician's. The spectre of death hovers over everything, from No Way Out to I Grieve to the Drop. And production-wise, Gabriel himself was as good as buried -- or at least his voice was. UP is so dense -- Darkness, Signal to Noise, Barry Williams Show - Gabriel fell in love with tinkering, and perhaps lost sight of the fact that we listen to his music for his voice. For example, listen to the early version of I Grieve from the City of Angels soundtrack -- it is spare, minimalist, and cathartic. The version on UP, by contrast, was as if PG was afraid of silence, and it is infected with additional (unnecessary) percussive elements. With PG, less is always more, and UP -- for me at least -- screamed for a Daniel Lanois intervention to tell Gabriel enough is enough.
That brings us to i/o. What a statement. It's as if Gabriel is reborn, has stepped outside and is seeing color for the first time. What strikes me about each of the songs so far - bright and dark - is that Gabriel has rediscovered space. They are all relatively busy, and yet upon repeated listens you can pick out an instrument and hone in on it - whether it's Tony's bass line or Manu's kit. Manu's influence bears mention here - my issue with Ged Lynch in UP that he was all pound and power. With Manu, there's a musicality and finesse that is evocative of Stewart Copeland's hi-hat work. It's the space between Levin's lines, the delicate fills Katche throws in, that reward repeated listens. And melodically, Gabriel has never been stronger. He sings with the clarity of SO, his voice rising above everything. Yes, Road to Joy repeats vocal rhythms of Kiss that Frog. Yes, Playing for Time is too on-the-nose sentimental for my taste. But my God, Four Kinds of Horses is a masterpiece. The Court sounds fresh, and does things PG hasn't done before. The driving chorus of Panopticom simply MOVES. I am more a fan of Mercy-Street Gabriel -- I can do without the Big Times and Sledgehammers -- but even Road to Joy reminds me of peak-era Talking Heads, three listens in I'm still bopping to the groove.
For me, what will make this album his best, most complete is if he next gives us something a little off and unconventional - ala Excellent Birds, We Do What We're Told, and No Self Control. And darker Gabriel is better Gabriel. But so far, it's been great - we should be celebrating PG's return.

I couldn't agree more. Except I think it's all brilliant. Playing for Time is a meditation on mortality. He's seen a lot of his friends pass away...losses get harder to bear. People closest to him...he nearly lost the love of his life, Meabh, to a rare cancer. Phil's decline and bravery to do the final tour...all of it taken together the value of these human connections. Seems to be the whole underlying theme of the project...the emphasis on our interconnectedness. We forget it to our greater peril.
The New Blood experience and work with John Metcalfe has opened up new vistas of color and dynamics and groove that go beyond the world music experiments from before...as much as i love those.
Have you heard Metcalfe's album The Appearance of Color. I think you'd like it.

Unfortunately it did trigger some "Kiss That Frog" trauma at the start, also reminds me a little of Burn You Up, Burn You Down (not a bad thing). I very much like the almost Bollywood style string runs, they're very nice. The chorus keyboard riff really sounds familiar but I can't quite place it. Overall it works; the bridge is especially effective. Should be a good live track - only a couple of weeks to find out in Nottingham!

But fundamentally there is nothing new under the sun…or the moon. The peak was reached with So. Afterwards inertia took the lead.

      @michelebravin2248 Год назад +1

@@Omentum459 Let me clarify. If PG is not good in sound, arrangements and production …well, then it’s not PG 😉. PG is a very well experienced, and high quality delivering musician, but in terms of “creativity”, he’s done. Since So, which is his peak, in such regard. All done afterwards is the same matter just rearranged, reworked, mixed up, etc. Nothing really outstanding, creative-wise, to make me…wow, PG got to another stage. And this is fair enough. Creativity has a time span which doesn’t long forever. Some artists then try to dig it in the dirt -😌- as much and deeper than they can in order to find out some more left. When you reach the status of PG is even harder. Because the expectations all around are even bigger than ever. And the artist is somehow slave of his own status and cliché/ standard that he/she set up previously. Being myself a big admirer -no more a fan, gone are those years- of PG and his great attitude to deviate from the norm and to experiment somehow, I would have been much more pleased to see him trying to step up once more. He didn’t or could not make it, which again is fine to me and ill always have a good place for him in my personal list of beloved artists. Just to say, I rather listen to PG III again and again or So, to re-appreciate his art rather than listening to him attempting to … copy himself in a “creative” way. And the moltitudes wowing…ohhh he nailed it again. 😊

    • @robbiedominic2558
      @robbiedominic2558 Год назад +6

Absolute drivel. You need to listen with fresh ears. "SO" was in 86', nearly 40 years ago. You're saying his creativity stopped back then? You're obviously not hearing the new songs with an open mind. There's no "Sledgehammer" or Big time" here. Not even a " Don't give up"...and thats a great thing. He's moving forward, not back. These new songs are a revelation, a new era of PG "back in the world"
