  • Four Kinds of Horses is the fifth song to be released from the Peter Gabriel's forthcoming album i/o. This is the Bright-Side Mix by Mark 'Spike' Stent. Released on the full moon, 5 May 2023.
Written by Peter Gabriel and produced by Peter Gabriel and Richard Russell, Four Kinds of Horses was recorded at Real World Studios in Wiltshire, The Beehive and Copper House in London.
"Four Kinds of Horses actually began on Richard Russell’s project ‘Everything Is Recorded’. He’s a friend (and founder of XL Records) and he asked me to pop in to his studio. I came up with some chords, melodies and words on top of a groove he was working on. We tried a few things that didn't altogether work and so it laid dormant for quite a while. Then I started playing around with it again and changed the mood and the groove and something else began to emerge with a better chorus."
There were a number of things that triggered ideas for the song as it developed, including the Buddhist parable of the Four Kinds of Horses, which describes different ways a student can approach their spiritual practice. There is also a focus on “the interesting overlap of religion and peace on the one hand and violence and terrorism on the other. There was also a wonderful film by Hany Abu-Assad called ‘Paradise Now’ which shows two young men who end up being trained to become terrorists and it's a real insight into where the head goes.”
As well as Russell, who set things in motion, Four Kinds of Horses also features Brian Eno on synths which “sounded like electric worms to me,” says Gabriel. “As soon as I heard one I thought they would make a great three dimensional wall paper of sound and asked Brian to create eleven more.” John Metcalfe again provides string arrangements, “beautiful work and as the song progresses, the strings play a key role” and backing vocals from Peter’s daughter Melanie, “another lovely moment for a dad.”
Continuing the theme of working with a different artist for each song release, this month’s track is accompanied by a cover image featuring the work of Cornelia Parker.
This month we have a fascinating artist, Cornelia Parker, who does some extraordinary work. When we were originally looking at the Art from Us project, I'd seen some of her stuff with exploding rooms and had been fascinated by that, so I'm really happy that she agreed to work with us on this. The photogravure technique of William Henry Fox Talbot was an inspiration for her in this piece, and some of the other glass-based images in the series. I fell in love with this particular work - it's called ‘Snap.’
Just like the previous full moon releases, Four Kinds of Horses will come with differing mix approaches from Mark ‘Spike’ Stent (Bright-Side Mix), here, plus Tchad Blake (Dark-Side Mix) and Hans-Martin Buff’s Atmos mix (In-Side Mix).
As well as new music, Peter Gabriel is about to embark on a tour with dates in the UK, Europe and North America on sale now. livenation.com / petergabriel.com
Further details on the release plans for the full album will follow.

I saw PG I/O show last night and was absolutely blown away ! I have seen hundreds and hundreds of concerts in my lifetime and this definitely ranks at or near the top ! Brilliant musicians accompanying Peter and his voice was spectacular. I couldn't sleep all night as the music was running through my head and I didn't want it to end ! Very few shows out there can top this ! The man is a gift to us all that we should appreciate with all our hearts !

Une fois de plus, Peter Gabriel nous transporte ailleur avec sa musique et sa sensibilité. J'aime cet artiste depuis que je suis enfant. Je l'ai connu par l'entremise de ma mère qui était fan de Genesis. Elle me faisait écouter des pièces comme Firth of Fifth, The Fountain of Salmacis, The Cinema Show et The Carpet Crawlers. J'ai été extrèmement chanceux et choyé d'avoir pu lui serrer la main lorsqu'il est venu faire son spectacle de la tournée Growing Up live à Montréal.

Four Kinds of Horses (Bright-Side Mix) Lyrics
    [Verse 1]
    It all seemed so simple
    Remarkably clear
    Like the darkest superhero
You were burst into our fear
They must have seen you looking
    Watched everything you said
Knowing you could be a part of it
    They fill your head
    Fill your head
    [Pre-Chorus]
    Come all the nights
    Oh, come all the days
    So inaccessible in this land
This land beyond the brilliant haze
    Here is all your money
    There is the load
    This is how you travel
If you live to see the world explode
    [Chorus]
Four kinds of horses, four kinds of mеn
Ah, you say you’re something differеnt
But you do it all again
Four kinds of horses, four kinds of men
Ah, you think you’re something different
But you do it all again
Again and again, again and again
    [Verse 2]
Your mind is made up so certain what is right
    But when they ordered everything
Will they see you were born so bright
Oh, mother illusion with your jacket of flames
    Your face it is everywhere
Such a dark, dark shade of fame
    [Pre-Chorus]
    Come all the nights
    Oh, come all the days
    So inaccessible in this land
This land beyond the brilliant haze
    Here is all your money
    There is the load
    This how you travel
If you live to see the world explode
    [Chorus]
Four kinds of horses, four kinds of men
Ah, you say you’re something different
But you do it all again
Four kinds of horses, four kinds of men
Ah, you think you’re something different
But you do it all again
Again and again, again and again
    [Instrumental bridge]
    [Outro]
    We feel the vibration
    We’re all holding it down
    We feel the vibration
It’s coming out of the ground
    We feel the vibration
    We’re all holding it down
    We feel the vibration
It’s coming out of the ground
    We feel the vibration
    We’re all holding it down
    We feel the vibration
It’s coming out of the ground
    We feel the vibration
    We’re all holding it down

Every time he gives the world new music, he makes my life a little bit better :-) ever since he left Genesis, everything is just mindblowing, and this is just another proof of that, fantastic PG. He finally got to sing with his long lost daugther, Melanie, live that is, on the world tour, on Come talk to me, like 20 years ago. Thought that was amazing. I have just listened to 'Four Kinds of Horses', and it is superb. At 73 years of age, how is his voice this good. Like the finest of wine Peter Gabriel's voice is getting better and better. His voice on this song is achingly gorgeous, full of richness, pathos, integrity, authority, sincerity, maturity and power. The lyrics are beautiful and moving and the chorus is compelling to the ear. I'm listening to Peter's music 50 very long years, and he just keeps giving and giving. He is an extraordinary talent and a once in a generation singer/songwriter. This album is a triumph. Jonathan Barry, artist and author, Clontarf, Dublin, Ireland.

I was considering his voice just now and it sounds better than it did when I was 13 in 1984. The beautiful high notes still resonate and cause me to cry as it has the beauty of no other. It is a joyous cry. That is how he has always made me feel.

    • @jonathanbarry3166
      @jonathanbarry3166 Год назад +1

@@NiamhCullen Thanks Desi, I couldn't agree more. Believe it or not I have been listening to Peter since his first single in 1968, when he was 18 years of age. He released his very first then with Genesis, and even then his voice was unique and different. By the time he sang the glorious song called 'The Carpet Crawlers', aged 25 , on the Genesis album 'The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway' in 1975 - he voice had already reached a maturity and grace far beyond his years. I remember even then in 1975 thinking this man's voice had an extraordinary gift to tell a story with integrity, depth, and soul. That was almost 50 years ago.
I would never have believed it possible that half a century later in 2023, that voice would continue to deepen, mature and morph into an even more gorgeous and vital sound. It's true that Robert Plant and Elton John's voices have also been well maintained, (and both in their 70's), but what other singer/songwriter in the whole world of that era is producing anything of this high quality, with a voice that is still getting better? There is none.
I would need hours to give full examples of where Gabriel's voice has been magnificent over the past 50 years: 'Solsbury Hill' in 1977, 'San Jacinto' in 1980, 'Walk Through the Fire' in 1984, 'Sketchpad With Trumpet and Voice' from Birdy in 1985, 'Red Rain' from 1986, 'Steam' and 'Only Us' from 1992, etc, etc, all seminal songs where his voice is brilliant.
But to think that his voice can be this gorgeous in 2023, with an even greater power to make one cry - well that is incredible. Truly majesterial. I think IO is going to be a better album than UP, and that is some legacy for him. I can think of no other comparable singer/ songwriter that has so consistently moved me for half a century - and more to come. Jonathan Barry, artist and author, Clontarf, Dublin, Ireland.

I've been in/around the music biz for 50+ years, from dive bars to stadiums/pro studios and all in between. I've made it a point of policy to never create "heroes" out of artists - they all put their pants on just like the rest of us. But you do it all again
Four kinds of horses, four kinds of men
Ah, you think you're something different
But you do it all again
Again and again, again and again
Your mind is made up so certain what is right
    But when they ordered everything
Will they see you were born so bright
Oh, mother illusion with your jacket of flames
    Your face it is everywhere
Such a dark, dark shade of fame
    Come all the nights
    Oh, come all the days
    So inaccessible in this land
This land beyond the brilliant haze
    Here is all your money
    There is the load
    This is how you travel
If you live to see the world explode
Four kinds of horses, four kinds of men
Ah, you say you're something different
But you do it all again
Four kinds of horses, four kinds of men
Ah, you think you're something different
But you do it all again
Again and again, again and again
    We feel the vibration
    We're all holding it down
    We feel the vibration
It's coming out of the ground
    We feel the vibration
    We're all holding it down
    We feel the vibration
It's coming out of the ground
    We feel the vibration
    We're all holding it down
    We feel the vibration
It's coming out of the ground
    We feel the vibration
    We're all holding it down
    We feel the vibration
It's coming out of the ground

Left a little speechless with this one. After "Playing for Time" I thought it couldn't get any better, that song brought me to tears. But this.....what an amazing soundscape, the little percussion details in the background, the chord progression at the end, the strings.....frig, what a song. I've been a PG fan for years, and am glad to have more greats to add to my collection. I'll be listening to his music forever.

There are four kinds of horses.
The first horse gallops merely at the sight of a whip.
The second horse gallops when the whip touches its hair.
The third horse gallops when the whip touches its skin.
The fourth horse only begins to gallop when the whip touches its bones.
