What Happened to AZULA After The War Ended? - Avatar Lore Explained

  • After Azula's downfall at the end of the 100 year war, she spiralled into a maniac. This is the ultimate fate of Azula and what happened to Azula after the war... It will shock you.
In the final days of the Hundred Year War, everything came crumbling down for Pheonix King Ozai and his daughter, who was left in charge of the homeland. Azula was defeated by Katara and Zuko and Ozai was taken down by the Avatar… But what happened to Azula after the war and he greatest defeat? Well, hit that subscribe button and lets break down the full story….
So the story begins in the aftermath of the huge conflict that took place at Yu Dao. This conflict began after Zuko and Aang agreed to return the Fire Nation colonies on Earth Kingdom land back to the Earth King, but what they didn’t realize was that the colonies had been there for so long that Earth Kingdom and Fire Nation families began to mix. This meant that some Earth Benders were now citizens of the Fire Nation and obviously didn’t want to give up their homes in the colonies. Families who were both Earth and Fire nation were being torn apart Zuko and Aang couldn’t decide on who the colonies really should belong to at this point. The conflict escalated so quickly that Fire Lord Zuko and Earth King Kuei both sent their armies into the colony of Yu Dao to claim the area, and it almost spiraled into the second Hundred Year War. Luckily for everyone involved, Avatar Aang Intervened and proposed a new plan which would separate Yu Dao from the four nations into something different…
Now if you’ve watched the Legend of Korra, you’ll probably see where this dispute ends up going. But before that is resolved, Azula comes into the picture.

Nah Azula never really cared about it all that much she's a complex character yet still simple to an extent she thrives on the fear of others because fear is more comfortable than the love she feels she never got she was even going to give the throne to Zuko before he left the fire nation she knew no matter what role she played she'd strike fear into her enemies and unfortunately for her being on the throne meant she wouldn't be able to fight

She keeps trying to get Zuko back to the Fire Nation and the only reason she took the throne of Ba Sing Se was to deliver the city to the Firelord.
The only time we see her care about ruling is when Ozai tells her she will be Firelord (and him Phoenix King), and she reacts surprised.

I mean I don’t like a lot of the the new avatar changes in lore but I can *kinda* see Azula being more welcoming to this illuminati-like figure that pulls the strings. She loves power and malicious planning, not the honor and responsibility of a throne.
Maybe while talking with her dad they realized Zuko
made good meat puppet with his weakness yet other nations are willing to talk with.

    • @owenleal
      @owenleal Год назад +30

@@vDorgengoa based on the video, there was already an Earth King who ruled as a vassal of the Fire Nation. With the Fire Nation gone, he would take over. If there are enough fire nation people who successfully integrated into the Earth Kingdom that there was a sizeable enough mixed ethnicity population, even under occupation to provoke an uprising at the idea of being forcibly emigrated back to the fire nation (and the video made it sound like the majority of the people in one particular city were mixed), then it seems to me like any Anti-Fire Nation sentiment might be in the minority. In this scenario, you may be likely to draw comparisons to the Indian presence in East Africa under the British Empire and the rise of Idi Amin among others. The difference here is that Kenyan, Ugandan, etc. Asians were rarely of mixed ethnicity because the diaspora were organised by the British Empire to be a buffer between the white ruling class and the indigenous African population, so relations between Africans and Asians were hostile by design. The Fire Nation's strategy is more similar to the Spanish's method of integration during their conquest of the Carribean in which they would purposefully encourage the Spanish population to build families with the native population to justify their pressence on the land and consolidate their social power in the population. Therefore, when Spain left the Carribean, there were still plenty of Spanish and mixed race people who just wanted to stay. To this day there a bunch of White Jamaicans for example who are just considered by much of the population to be simply Jamaicans like everyone else.
So unless there were caveats that the comic gave that were not reflected by the video, I dont see the Earth Kingdom wholesale rejecting Fire Nation peoples who have built 100 years worth of history living amongst the indigenous nation and having children, even under the cloud of military occupation. I dont know what you mean by "who's in charge of the money?" Like, in what sense are you talking about?

    • @owenleal
      @owenleal Год назад +10

@@mistersiemsen8090 I dont know that the Fire Nation has a different system of governance to the Fire Nation. It seems to be a feudal system of Lords and Lesser Lords with a main Fire Lord at the top, same with the Earth Kingdom. Even in Legend of Korra, the whole Earth Nation outside of Republic City was still a feudal monarchy, as was the Fire Nation under Zuko.

I do really like the idea that Azula was able to redeem herself in the comics and later material. Azula was a tragic and terrifying villain for sure. But she was also written as a product of her upbringing, fears, anger, desperation, loneliness and spite. With the Fire Nation renewed, she lost all excuses to keep up her violence and got the chance to start looking for closure.
I think it would have been *really* interesting to see her turn into a bit of a hermit/witch character. Someone who understood her own flaws finally, gained some kind of spiritual growth and closure and understood she would rather live peacefully away from the Fire Nation that ruined her childhood.
Imagine finding HER to help the Avatar in future Avatars. She would be a mirrored version of the swamp bloodbender. Dangerous, deadly, forbidden techniques BUT more nuanced, smart and a person who wholly understands the power of violence against a terrible empire. The complete opposite of Aang and much closer to someone like Kyoshi.

In a world where people are able to bend the elements by their will, where dragons and spirits exist, is it really so weird that Azula sees her mother haunting her and fearing that she's manipulating her? I think it's actually pretty likely Azula isn't as insane as she seems, it appears to me she is just not able to cope with her mommy issues and maybe her regret for following her father without question and becoming "the perfect child" in his eyes. I don't think she's crazy, I just think the realization is slowly dawning on her that her mother didn't hate her at all and loves her as much as she loves Zuko and she doesn't understand why or know what to feel.
    I didn't read the comics.

That's what the comic really explores at the end, and what this video comments on. Her mother apologising for not loving her enough was all Azula wanted to hear (remember the beach episode? She tried to play it off glibly, but it was obvious that there was real sentiment behind her words) and that's why she gained some closure around that.
BUT she was still highly sociopathic outside of the paranoid schizophrenia, and still had delusions of grandeur as a master manipulator.

I have to come out and say: the gaang collectively picked up the idiot ball when they agreed to take Azula, but none more than Zuko. He left Azula and Ozai unattended while they talked, left himself alone with her when he knew her chi blocking was wearing off, let her come with the gaang unbound (and even though they could collectively fight her off shes already shown to not be above a backstab), and furthermore left the throne unattended. I get that optimism and second chances are the gaangs whole thing, but each and every one of them knows just how unstable and dangerous Azula is, none more than Zuko.

Give them a break. They are still young and can make bad choices. They are still learning. Also things worked out in the end and at times you have to take risks.
Also Zuko and the gaang did take precautions which worked reasonably well. Azula did test Zukos and Gaangs resolve but did not go too far. Wise Iroh also did support Azula coming along with gaang. Also earth kingdom professor was correct. If you cannot take of the family you cannot take care of the nation. Zuko in spite of everything still considered his family a family.

There is a recently released guidebook for the new RPG roleplaying game covering different eras in Avatar, Namely Kyoshi Roku Aang and Korra. Aangs era, namely events between the end of a hundred year war and Korras time are least covered of all. Events extend up to 6 years if I am not mistaken after hundred year war. There is an entry on Azula. Basically Azula is still leader of Fire Warriors, though her group splintered. Azula is still trying to manipulate Zuko, however it is also written that Azula may care for her brother's welfare. The point being she still in the shadows for at least 4 years after Smoke and Shadow. There is also new cookbook which is set in universe sometime after hundred year war. From one of the entries from Katara about generation of water tribe kids grown up experience luxury food which were rare in her time growing up, my personal guess set sometime 15-25 years after the war. Well there is an entry from Azula, showing her on speaking terms with Mai, and looks like on good enough terms with team avatar to have an entry in the cookbook. Sadly not just Azula. What puzzles me and frustrates me is Kiyi other sister of Zuko. Kiyi dissapears after Smoke and Shadow. Legacy of Fire Nation does contain Kiyi in a family tree as an older princess, and Kiyi is considered member of royal family. But other than that nothing about Kiyi by Korras time either.
Same with Suki, Ty Lee. Avatar Legacy book says that both have remained Kyoshi warriors for at least 24 years after wars end. Other than that nothing. My guess is Avatar studios will cover the 70 year gap between Aang and Korra. But the content is years away. Zuko movie and prequel movie is not the only ones in development. There are from what I understood a lot of new projects being worked upon. We will have to wait until 2025-2030. See what happens.
I initially thought that the reason creators did not want to cover era between Aang and Korra is because Azulas fate is deeply contravercial and they do not want a fan backlash. Delving into 70 year gap between Aang and Korra will mean addressing Azulas fate. But now I am not sure honestly. Either that or the creators want to tell new stories and left the gap between Aang and Korra to fans imagination. What do you think?

I honestly am glad they wrote her that way though. She was a more loving and caring person than their father per se. But to really illustrate how even good people can play a role in the suffering of those they are close to. it created this uneasy feeling to see someone painted so lovingly as someone who'd leave their own kids with nothing to build off of. She was raised in a nation that basically operated as a cult and she couldn't cope with it any longer, she couldn't protect herself or her kids and in feeling powerless made a drastic and life altering decision. And it changes the way we understand zuko's trauma. In a warped way azula recognized the abandonment before knowing what happened. perhaps she could even sense the flightiness in her mom which created some of those tensions in the first place which is why she couldn't believe she was loved.

      This.
In my head I always thought there were some tiny signs of Azula approaching a more mentally stable state, but then toward the end of ATLA her psyche just... broke. Whatever tenuous hold she may have had on the last vestiges of clawing her way back from the brink, she lost. The comic reinforces that.
I think the issue is that her descent into full-blown paranoia was so rushed that most people forget how totally unhinged she became right at the end; they only remember the few glimpses of a somewhat reasonable Azula we saw, when the writers were seemingly toying with the idea of her having a redemption arc against her father. But it feels like they changed their minds and just decided fuck it, she goes fully batshit.

I could see a partial redemption arc where she at least moves on with her life, but becoming friends with team avatar and fighting on their side like some people are suggesting just seems unrealistic. I think it would be much more satisfying to see her find a normal Job that gives her her own sense of purpose Like maybe she gets a job at a hospital and basically uses her Lightning bending to bring people back from cardiac arrest and she uses it to save Sokka and Katara's dad? that would feel like a fitting end to her arc her learning how to use lightning to heal rather than harm.

9:53-10:00 I admit the narrator probably was joking, though that's far from the most horrible thing she's ever done. Yeah she killed the Avatar (almost), tried numerous times to kill her brother, and even tried to kill her mother. She tried to kill Katara during her Agni Kai, but stealing a wish is the absolute worst thing Azula has done; no that's the least bad thing she's done. If anything that's perhaps one of the better things she's done because she came to find her mother along with Zuko (yes she was trying to usurp Zuko and kill her mother but still she helped Zuko reconnect with his mother. In the end she left and gave up trying to kill her mom after her mom's apology for not loving her enough). Sure it wasn't the nicest thing to take a wish from two people who desperately needed it, but when it comes to finding someone who you longed for as the years went by ya gotta do what ya gotta do. Besides it worked out in the end for both sides which is a major blessing. Other than that blemish this video is a great one!

You've got to be joking. She stole that couples one chance to return to a normal life for nothing.
Even if Ursa was still the same and had all her memories and they were all reunited happy again that STILL wouldn't justify what she did.
But all that actually happened is that nothing really changed, since "Ursa" doesn't exist anymore. The person she became has none of her memories, meaning that Ursa is effectively dead. Her consciousness and what makes her Ursa no longer exists, so the wish was for nothing at all.

@@taylorhillard4868 As Noriko your right, though even she says, "If it's true and I really am your mother I'm sorry I didn't love you enough". That was enough to make Azula cry. It did lead to a fight and Zuko told her, "I've always known the throne is my destiny. But no matter how messed up our relationship is your still my sister". She left after that and slowly started to change. She did try undermining Zuko's rule with the goal of making him more ruthless. In essence she helped him in figuring out what kind of ruler he wanted by doing so. Also the siblings did get what they wanted in the end since Aang knew the Mother of faces son, Koh. Noriko decided she wanted to go back to her old self and was granted her wish. Then Zuko and his mother along with his sister Kiyi returned to the Capital and Ursa got past her fear of Ozai with Iroh's help. If Azula hadn't of stolen the wish none of that would have occurred. Though killing the Avatar has to be among the worst actions Azula had done. Thank you for your comment though.

Screwing Zuko's mom is a righteous act, most of the trouble in the series can be traced back to her. The continuation of the war, Ozai's coronation, Azula's insanity, and probably more.

@@Nerthos No, it can be traced back to Ozai and his and Irohs father blaming Ursa for anything is not okay as she didn't have much of a choice herself and that is rude to say about her and it won't be tolerated and I still don't know why is people blame her tbh as there is Ozai to blame seems a bit of a double standard to me. I'm not exactly sure what you meant to say by the first half of your first sentence, but I'm assuming that it's not in a nice way.

The following question is related to Azula.
Kurama was neither manipulative nor patient enough to corrupt Naruto (which is a real shame given the fact he's based around the Kitsune). But let's imagine that the Nine Tails was actually Azula. And like Pain, she managed to make enough sense through out his life. What would the end result be ?

Also, the theory about the inbreeding of the fire nation royal family makes a lot of sense because Ozai was going to kill Zuko because he thought that he wasn’t going to be a fire bender because there was always a possibility that he wasn’t even his son, which ended up being true.for the royal line to continue, they all have to be related by blood and be a fire bender. and then, if you look at how Ozai got with Ursa in the first place, because she was the granddaughter of avatar Roku, that would bring a stronger bloodline for the fire nation royal family. Anyway, he literally bullied his way into her life and pretty much told her I’m gonna be with you because I can so who’s to say that she was either sneaking around seeing zuko’s real father or she got pregnant with zuko right before Ozai forced her into a relationship. however, knowing that the true love of, Ursa told Zuko, it would be impossible for him to be his father, this could have just met that ozai was just paranoid and jealous and hateful, because he knew that Ursa never loved him and would never love him and her true love was the other guy that he stole her from.

Yep, in the comics Ozai clearly states that he's 100% sure that Zuko is his son, since he had spies all over Ursa. So it is confirmed afterwards that Ozin is indeed his father. But he said that out of punishment, he'll treat Zuko as if it wasn't his son.

It's been theorized that the spiritually attuned fire sage women who tends to sky bison from Legends of Korra might be Azula.
I've also imagined that due to Azula also being a descendant of Aang's past life, Roku, she and Aang become spiritually connected, linked, and bonded with each other, because of this, the two get to know each other properly, they rub growth off of each other, and are closer to each other than anyone else.
Zuko lures Azula back to the castle and drops the bomb about her and Zuko having relations to Roku and other dirty little secrets Ozai tried hiding from them. With this bond, Azula decides to switch target and plans to make Aang the warmongerer Ozai wanted her to be instead of Zuko. Azula and Aang are in a psychological/spiritual war, the endgoal is to have one be persuaded to join the other.
I've also pictured some build up over a twist that Xai Bau is Ozai's alias and it was him who founded red lotus.
