  • Throughout the years there have been many forms of illegal, forbidden and outright terrifying bending abilities that were discovered and then forgotten… But there was one ability based in the Earthbending tree that actually granted a wise bender immortality… And it may actually even be the reason for Avatar Kyoshi’s ridiculously long lifespan… #avatarthelastairbender #thelegendofkorra #avatarkyoshi
So to begin the story, we must go back long before the time of Aang, to the era of Kyoshi. During this time, Kyoshi discovered the journal of her mother, who was involved in a shady criminal group.
In this journal is a description of a man who Kyoshi’s mother believed was a legendary figure named Tieguay the Immortal. Shockingly though, Kyoshi’s mother believed this figure to be part of her group, but hiding his identity…
Now sometime later, Kyoshi encounters a strange man and remembering the description in her mother’s journal, she is immediately reminded of Tieguai the Immortal. This would be shocking as this master was said to have lived before the four nations existed.
Though he plays coy, Lao Ge hints that he may have known Guru Shoken, a philosopher who lived 4000 years ago! Lao Ge did this through using forbidden earthbending technique to prolong his life indefinitely.
So how did he pull off this feat? Well As Lao Ge trains Kyoshi in earthbending, he reveals the secret. Through precise control of chi paths in the body and literally bending the metal within their own cells, an earthbender can preserve their own vitality and continuously regenerate their cells. Essentially, they can decide which version of themselves to remain as forever!
Lao Ge explains this in the following way: “Divide your body in two”, he said, while Kyoshi practiced heating and breaking a piece of scrap metal. “Then divide it again, and then again, and again. What would you have left. “A bloody mess”, Kyoshi retorted. She burned her hand and yelped. Exactly, Lao Ge Said. Put the pieces back, and put them back again, and again and again one more time, and you’re whole once more. Kyoshi replies: A human being isn’t a block of stone. He replies: “That’s where you’re wrong, the illusion that the self is separate from the rest of the world is the driving factor that limits our potential. Once you realize there’s nothing special about the self, it becomes easier to manipulate. In a way, Lao Ge discovered how to lock his body at a certain point in time by arranging his cells in a way that would maintain his current state. No growth or no decay, simply at rest. Now combining this knowledge with the fact that he hinted at knowing Guru Shoken, a 4000 year old philosopher, it’s pretty clear that Lao Ge is the real deal. He truly has conquered death and used a rare and highly controversial form of earthbending to bend the state of his own body into eternal rest. As we know, bending any internal body liquid or material is clearly forbidden by natural law, meaning even a person who has never bended an element will know that it is wrong.
Lao Ge gained total mastery over his body body, and therefore his life using these forgotten techniques. While most benders use chi to enhance their abilities, Lao Ge refined it to an unheard of level, combining it with the manipulation of his own cells. - conquering aging itself!
. His exploits prove bending can go far beyond the elements, with earthbending granting true immortality.
Lao Ge's mastery of life extension may even explain Avatar Kyoshi's ridiculously long lifespan of over 200 years. It's likely she learned these secrets from her master. He remains one of the most fascinating and mysterious benders in Avatar history precisely because of this terrifying power over life and death!

Imagine a God tier airbending technique that is able to bend spacetime... Since air is associated with spirituality, like Jinora being able to project herself beyond walls and floors. And air being the most 'empty space' bending discipline, compared to water, earth, fire. Bending space might not be too far fetched. And if space and time is not seen as separate but as two parts of a whole, an airbender might be able to teleport, slow down or reverse time, compress or expand space at will, bend gravity, and much more... That'll be fun to see...

I highly doubt that. Space by definition, is an area without any matter and energy. The benders of the avatar show can only control different elements of matter and types of energy.
As for time, well that depends. The ability to learn sci-fi time travel, highly unlikely.
Perhaps they could maybe somehow dabble in theoretical time travel which is moving so fucking fast that your perception of time slows down. Do that fast enough and for long enough, you'd be able to technically time travel to the future, but you wouldn't be able to go back in time.
But then there is aging. It seems master Earth benders are able to stop their bodies from aging, kind of like an earth bending version cryogenics. Kyoshi, that 4,000 year old guy, and maybe even Boomy learned how to do this.
As for age reversal. I don't know, maybe only an Avatar could ever potentially learn how to do that.
And lastly, there are Black Holes which can fuck with light and time. Obviously, a bender wouldn't be able to get close enough to a Black Hole, to test their bending on it, without dying first. But hypothetically, if an Avatar with godlike levels of mastery could somehow get close enough without getting utterly imploded, then maybe they could potentially mess with all of that congregated matter.

That is unlikely. In order to bend Metal you need Earth Impurities. There isn't any Earth Impurities in the "Metals" in our bodies. Also, the "Metals" in our bodies aren't the same as the Metals found in the Earth. But, even if I'm wrong; they'd still need Earth Impurities which our bodies don't have. *Edit*: It appears I was wrong about the Metal in our bodies. It still doesn't have Earth in it.
I find this whole method very illogical. Not just on the Metalbending aspect; but the cellular level aspect. If this man is as old as he is theorized to be; there wouldn't even be an understanding of the concept of a cellular level during his Era.

If you can use earthbending to lock the cells of an organism into an age, it might also be possible to either reverse aging or accelerating aging.
Then there is the possibility of fixing injuries, maybe even restoring things like lost limbs.

To be fair, is bending things within your own body actually considered taboo? Many bending techniques tend to start from the body, like fire and air. Blood bending is considered taboo simply because of how you control and hurt someone while doing that. Like Yang-Chen's technique of emptying a room of oxygen is also brutal and contrary to monk-traditions.
I could see some cultures seeing the life-extending earthbending technique as taboo because of you going against the natural concept of decay, or like going against the cycle that your body nourishes the earth again. Well, in most currents of occultism (both western and eastern) earth is the element that deals with the physicality of the body, being the last element to be conceived and the vessel of the other elements. This view can be observed in the mythos of creation of many currents, where gods tend to use mud as the material where they infuse life, the "golem" archetype, it's the same procedure used in humans in religious mythos, therefore earth is the element that predominates in flesh and forms it physically. It makes sense earth would be the element to prolong the lifespan of flesh.

Bending has a lot of potential, what anyone can do is all limited to what they think is possible and what they know about the world and what makes it up.
Earthbending, in this case is all chemistry and designed to manipulate the body and its substance into remaining stable. With further knowledge and understanding, specifically the structure of atomic matter or even the components that make up the body it is possible to replace or even regrow lost limbs simply by recreating it. Rebuild your body through your knowledge and even change it in order to survive.
Firebenders have infinite potential to be destructive, their entire basis of power circuses are thermodynamics and exciting electrons, those properties can create axions and plasma, which they do through lightning. But the greater potential is atomic energy and harnessing the energy of the sun and even manipulating the structure of matter that allows it to be disassembled and broken apart by changing the charges of atoms that could dissolve or tear apart objects.
Water Benders could manipulate their own cells as well, rejuvenate themselves and even revive themselves. Mostly because of the healing qualities and the ability to manipulate blood. It may even be possible to take it from others, stealing the life force and rejuvenated cells of another and transplanting them into oneself. They could also become hard to kill as they could control their own life force and survive fatal wounds by manipulating their own biological functions to stay functional despite the damage they suffer and even heal at an accelerated rate.

i would think all elements have to be in balance for this to work. that’s what life is- a balance, always, the opposite force of entropy. that’s where the fundamental elements in spiritual practice come from. an earth bender who can only manipulate the earthen elements of the body lacks the energy and qi flow that an air bender could do when converting oxygen to ATP or a fire bender could do when applying heat to chemically convert available elements into others. waterbenders being healers and blood benders suggest they would have dominion over nourishment, as it’s the blood that carries everything.
because of all this, i would think one would need to be an avatar, not just an Earth Bender, to get close to immortality, but any great bender of any one element could certainly prolong their lifespan by turning their power inward in the most efficient way available to just their element

I think it makes more sense that water would be able to gain immortality. Earth benders don’t bend metal but the earth within the metal. Water makes up a substantial part of our body, we’ve seen them heal. So maybe a 10 min healing session each day could stop/reverse aging.

Earth benders are definitely up there with water benders in terms of opness now. They literally can remain immortal for as long as they want if they master this technique. From what I read, the ability basically allows earth benders to live as long as they want and if they wanna pass on they simply just have to deactivate the ability. My guess is kyoshi used the ability to live as long as she did before finally letting herself die after accomplishing all she had to accomplish. The immortality ability also gave the user to also heal from anything through mediation.

All I'm saying, if you can manipulate your cells by splitting, and fusing them...What's to stop you from simply splitting your enemy on a cellular level. The ultimate combat technique. No way to block it unless you're an earth bender who knows how to do it. You're fighting one moment, then your body is cellularized the next.

I have a theory about fire bending. What exactly is fire? If it's heat or energy then that means a fire bender could manipulate the other elements. Heat is when atoms are vibrating at high speeds. So moving the atoms around in say sand to heat them up could cause dust devils. Could move something that's heated? Then hit air could be moved. So on and so on

The trouble with this type of bending is that if it's so do-able, why doesn't absolutely every Earthbender do it? And more to the point, if Kyoshi really did master it, how did she die at all?
That's the trouble with immortality granting mumbo-jumbo: it's either not perfect, or it makes for plot-armour which dulls the story.

Immortality is something even Toph hasn't figured out yet and most earth benders do this subconsciously anyways ehich probably explains why masters if earth bending live for so long.
