Princess Azula from the Fire Nation is a recurring fan-favorite, but not so much celebrated in her own world. There’s no way around accepting the fact that she is one of the, perhaps the most, deadly person alive, in Aang’s time at least. Every appearance of hers is marked with not only an eerie background music just reserved for her, but she also exceeds sheer dominance over anybody who is in the same room as her, effortlessly pushing them into her shadow. While her persona is surely interesting on its own, one of her most striking features is her firebending which distinguishes itself from that of others. How so? Well, one only needs to take a quick look at any of the scenes she’s seen firebending to notice that the color of her fire is blue instead of the typical yellow-orange and white.

If she were sane azula would have known it’s a trap from a mile away, and in the season 2 finale azula wasn’t even trying with Katara, y’all really think that was her full potential ? She was able to beat Aang , so why not katara. It’s just because she was focused on Aang and Katara caught her off guard, also in the same episode azula defeated her again (19:40)so what are y’all talking about.

She was caught off guard, she literally turned her back on Katara and was looking at Aang , that’s when katara flushed her with water. azula defeated Aang in the same episode , so she could have defeated katara if she tried. If u compare the way she fought katara and the way she fought Aang , u could see the clear discrepancy. Her blue fire when fighting katara was so small and almost nonexistent, whereas her fire when fighting Aang was so strong that Aang literally flew , and no in the same episode azula defeated Katara , towards the end. The time stamp is 19:45 , around that time. Azula striked her and knocked her out . I already mentioned that she was slipping in the finale or else she would have noticed kataras trap a mile away and wouldn’t have stepped into the storm drain .

One thing I found interesting in sozin's comet is that normally azula's fire turns to normal orange when burning something, but her fire in the palace is already burning and not just getting shot out, but is still staying blue
I think it’s cause she is still continuously bending it, rather than letting it burn out and turn red orange .

Blue Fire is also a nice characterization. Blue Fire, unlike normal fire, is not wild and is very concentrated. Blue fire is always upright and straight, which is why Azula's fire turns back into orange after some time. But after she loses her sanity, she stops focusing so much and just tries to make it as hot as possible.

I always thought Azula to be a psychopath. In a way, she doesn't really experience the emotions like a normal being would. I think she has them completely seperated, making it not affect her lighting bending at all.

I think the blue color is the physical manifestation of the chaos the erupted inside of her. If this were a matter of sheer ability or prowess, then Masters like Iroh and Jeong Jeong would also have had blue fire.
Azula sought control because she struggled to keep it. Remember anything of a spiritual nature is blue or white. Spiritual maturity is not the same as the physical. Her "composure" is actually a sign of the struggle.

Azula also fire bends differently than other firebenders. She bends from her fingertips while others bend while making a fist. Using her fingertips probably allows her to concentrate more energy into a smaller point, which would allow her to make her flames hotter. In the flashback, she is seen fire bending the traditional way. Just my guess.
I love how insane they made her look when she lost control. Much respect to the animation team.

certain chemical reactions can cause fire to change colours, blue fire is more abundant in something than normal fire. I haven’t done any research but maybe salt can cause fire to turn blue because of salt’s chemical compound.

I loved that they made Azula completely lose her mind near the end. It was such good plot development. Azula always tried to be this ba soulless monster like her father but in reality, she loved her friends and Zuko. When both her best friends and Zuko betrayed her, she was deeply hurt and it drove her into insanity, because she didn't feel like she could trust anyone after that.
I’ve always considered it to be something like a rare genetic mutation that activates during puberty. I think in the comics, the reason why Ozai married Ursa, because it was prophesied that both of their bloodlines (that of Sozin and Roku) combined would create a line of very powerful firebenders.
What bothers me is she’s literally the only character in both series that has blue fire but it’s never explained

Probably because blue fire is like the complete combustion of flames, a.k.a a pure flame or a perfect flame - and Azula is known for her obsession of nothing less than perfection. That makes her pretty unique tbh, cause she's the only character in the two series who can wilfully use blue flames - it looks really cool.
She's the only character in either Series with THAT much rage...and pain that won't let her leave that rage

Aang (pronounced as ang) means body.
Interesting point, however avatar is more based on the countries in Asia, so it wouldn’t make much sense to have a name deriving from a Spanish word. I think it’s more to do with how perfect Azula is/tries to be as blue is a refined flame (as pointed out by another commenter)

I definitely see her fire being a mix of pent up emotions and perfectionism. Her pent up emotions about her mother would've been the main fuel for such power, and her perfectionism would explain why she was able to do certain things most firebenders can't do, especially the ability to bend lightning despite her mental state. (The fact it also happened during Sozin's Comet would be part of that explanation too.)
Now that I think about it... you can probably throw in Zuko's taunt in that pile too. Azula does see her brother as inferior, so getting beaten and taunted by him just added fuel to the fire. Literally.
I like to think that Azula's blue flame comes from he strength with the fire chakra. It's fueled by willpower and blocked by shame so with her being a guided and strong willed character while lacking any shame, I think that pushed her fire to be hotter and more powerful than other firebenders.
The fact that Azula at her worst is a match for Zuko at his best.
But she could never beat Katara. katara washed azula's ass twice

Fun fact.
In the kyoshi novels there was a character who could bend WHITE FIRE.
And there were many colors of fire in the episode "the firebending masters" where aang and zuko learn firebending from the dragons.
In conclusion, there has to be more meaning behind these coloration of fires than what the creators said.

We know there are more than 4 elements bend. We call it "subbend" or something. Like lightning, metal, blood, etc.
But then again, even each bender has their own quality.
For fire bender here, is about the heat of the fire.
For earth bender, probably becoming one with the earth. Toph's seismic sense is the peak maybe or the closest.
For air, becoming one with the air like lahima & zahir. Or maybe the ability to control the gas elements(oxygen, nitrogen, carbon, methan, etc) in the air. Like they can even make their own atmosphere.
And water, maybe the ability to control any liquid from any living beings is the top skill.

She was a fire bending prodigy. She simply mastered it and leveled it up- her flames are hotter. It’s true the fire bender during Aang’s time fire bent out of rage and hatred, but as you can see, Azula always has that hostility and intense domineering personality. When Zuko and Aang visited the Sun Warriors, they learned a more efficient and powerful form of bending which was lost.
What I’m trying to say is- although Azula was full of hatred, she was still a prodigy. She fire bent like the Sun Warriors taught and she learned on her own. Her hatred tempered the flame and it turned blue.
Well this was answer was solved a long time ago actually haha. Nickelodeon had an avatar special when avatar first aired called avatar extras, where for each episode, they would add text bubbles that revealed fun facts about each episode. For azula's scene, they said that azula's fire is blue simply because it's hotter lol, and that having blue colors would contrast with zuko's so it would look better in fights

I had always figured that Azula is such a perfectionist that she pushed herself to make her fire even better than anyone else's. Blue firebending is no doubt extremely rare and would be a huge mark of pride. Azula had insane standards she had to live up to and if anyone pushed themselves to the most insane limits to make her fire burn hotter than anyone else's (including top tier masters like Roku, Iroh, and Ozai) it would be Azula.
I think, that Iroh or Roku, didnt use blue fire, because, they didnt think its neccesarry. Both are capable of doing things Azula can, atleast on her level, or better.

Orange fire is the least hot, blue fire is the second hottest, red the third hottest, and the most hot is white (scientifically proofen) so if iroh or ozai managed to bend red or white fire there bending will be way stronger
@xInfoRaderx My theory is that due to her emotional control. Fire benders expend spiritual and emotional energy (anger usually) to bend, but since she keeps a cool head, the emotional energy is chanelled to enhance her flames.

I feel that even when she looked pale, u could see her passion. Plus the blue flames stole the shadows from her face with light and color. Even as she was surrounded by her own flames they did not consume her. She wouldn't allow her flames to define her. Her flames are an expression on her willingness to exist, not "just" existing.
I like the theory that she is so enthralled with power and control through any means necessary that she almost willed the flames to be hotter in a way as she had to have absolute control over everything even her bending despite what risk that could’ve put her at if it ever backfired on her
My theory is that the animators were like, "Bro, wouldn't it be cool if the antagonist had blue fire?" To which another animator replied, "Dude, that'd be sick!"

My theory is she was a firebending prodigy who is able to attain the perfect combustion needed for fire. Take a stove for example. When their is improper combustion of gas and oxygen the flame is orange / yellow. When proper combustion occurs the flame is blue and hotter.

I think the blue hue to her fire denotes her mastery of fire bending. The critique of "Only a hair out of place" with her rebuttal of, "Not good enough!" shows how strict she is with her form, and I feel that she unlocked blue flames with her prodigiousness and dedication to getting the perfect form for firebending.
She mastered the lightning technique to the point it increased her normal flame output. She was training that technique over and over for a long time.

Her flame represents perfect flame combustion into the combustion products.
Her problem is perfectionism. That's also her character flaw, and her downfall. This means that there is zero soot in her flame, zero offgassing of combustion by-products, zero carbon monoxide... just perfection. Just like she was raised. (Ever notice how her flame turns orange when it catches fire on other materials?)
Zuko, on the other hand, represents imperfection. It suits his character well. Rage and impatience makes his flame orange.

But unlike Azula. Zuko embraces his imperfections and grows from them. Azula denies her imperfections, which explains why she had a mental breakdown at the end of the series.

I’d say Azula was already a prodigy when she was a child. When she got older she discovered knew ways and variants in which fire can be formed as. Azulon was also known as a lightning progidy and so Azula is then named for keeping her grandfathers legacy of bending lightning which is blue.
When the Dragons were bending they created many colors like a rainbow and even colors that don't exist. If someone with the skill to firebend were to be taught by a dragon or someone powerful enough they could theoretically achieve many colors.
Azula's fire was made blue to denote both her mastery in both firebending and lightning-creation. Azula's fire burns hotter than most due to her lightning-mastery, but will turn orange as it cools. Second in raw power only to the Fire Lord Ozai, she was a force to be reckoned with.
That's what I figured too; she's the daughter of the most powerful firebender alive, and such a talented prodigy she mastered lightning bending as a child.
I seriously doubt Ozai is stronger than Azula. If he is know, she would have surely become stronger than he ever was when she reached his age and training later in life.

It would’ve been a cool detail (albeit less pretty and artistic) if her fire turned normal red during her last duel with Zuko showing how much focus she was lacking from her sanity going away
a blue flame means that the chemical reaction of combustion (which is rapid oxidation) is happening perfectly (and therefore hotter). A red or orange flame means that the oxidation process is not perfect and there is residual (soot and ashes). Azula being the perfectionist she is just produces a perfect combustion with her bending resulting in a blue flame. This perfectionism also lets her bend litening, but the colors of the flame and litening bending are in my opinion not related.

Dark Phantom it could become blue if he gains more control over his quirk. It could even be even more powerful than dabi’s due to his ice half to cool his body down. So it could become blue eventually but for now it will be red
The true, outside the show reason is that they wanted to animate Azula and Zuko's fire so you could tell the difference. They knew there would be battles between them and wanted it to be clear who was firebending what, and show a nice contrast between the two.

I think also because of her technique, if you pay attention you can notice that she uses her fingers rather than her fists (like everyone else) maybe this causes the fire to get out in a more pressurized way causing it to be blue, not like the fists that they cause it to get out in a more dispersed way. It would have been interesting if Sozin had used blue fire as well. For one, it'd have been easier to follow the scenes with both him and Roku, but also it would have given Azula a point of comparison--just as powerful as the man who'd started it all.

Zuko has a good heart and eventually learns to be good, so we know that he didn’t draw his fire power from hatred in the end, he learned to draw it from other things.

This is the best theory I have heard so far on this topic.
I think it's from her sheer skill. She's pretty much confirmed a genius in the show and her firebending reflects this. She uses fire and lightning in ways no other firebender does.

I agree that Azula’s blue fire comes from hatred, neglect and manipulation. Ozai’s high expectations and Ursa’s lack of care pushed her into a dark place. All the negative emotions increased the heat and power of her inner fire, but the need to maintain composure and perfection focused it into something precise and deadly, instead of wild, as shown by her firebending with her fingers instead of her fists.
In color psychology, blue is linked with emotion and is most closely associated with water. From this perspective, I see that Azula bottled up many of her positive emotions like love, respect and empathy, along with all the negative ones. The only things she had were ambition, determination and domination. All her repressed emotions were buried deep down and could only express themselves through her firebending.
Along with Sozin’s Comet, I think that’s why her fire was so powerful yet wild in the Final Agni Kai. Due to her mental instability, all of her repressed emotions were flooding out in crazed, uncontrolled bursts.

My theory on why her fire, and ONLY her fire is blue, might come from the fact of her unstable mentality.
I personally think that a calm state of mind is about as necessary to bend lightning as a driver's license is to driving. Theres no physical difference. But you really shouldn't do it without it or you risk severe repercussions. But Azula can do it during the agni kai because its 2nd nature to her at that point.
Scientifically blue flame means complete reaction of fuel and oxygen which leaves no soot. Unlike orange or yellowish flame that is not a complete reaction that produces soot and gas like carbon monoxide.
Like the gas cooker in the kitchen or a candle you usually see blue flame below the yellow one.
So her skills is refined through training and probably a perfectionist too.

Yes, you're right. Because when carbon burns it produces blue fire. So a candle flame that is blue usually implies that the carbon is also not being put to waste. So yes, it is cleaner.

In Brazil, we use butane gas (not propane) on stoves. The fire is aways completely blue. 😉

Well, from the episode where Aang and Zuko went to seek the dragons, they showed them that the color of fire bended was more than just the original fire color. They even seemed fascinated about the variation of colors fire bending could assume. That's an angle worth investigating. I believe each color variation can be unlocked or activated with a specific act or form. The variations could even represent some unique trait in some fire benders. I even thought the creators would make use of that concept.

Old I know, but this is actually something my friends and I thought was going to happen when zuko lost his bending. We thought and really believed his bending qas going to change color when zuko reconciled his internal struggle.
We felt like since zuko still could not shoot lighting a fire color change would be a visual way of personifying his struggle and overcoming it.
They kind of did this in the show as his fire actually made a different sound and was warmer when it did come back, but after they showed all those firbending colors, zukos comment about the colors and him saying "I understand", we were getting so huge that our theory was correct. We legit he was going to blast out green fire or something to show inner peace and him unlocking a secret to fire bending.
We thought this would be a good way to build on the lore just a bit more and touch on why fire can take on different forms.
That said, I understand why they didn't make this a more pronounced change as there were only a few episodes remaining and they were wrapping up the show.
I do think if a retelling of the original show was done, this would be one of the changes I would add in (some other changes would be adding more sokka training episodes, for example I would love to see him work with more military planning minds on creative solutions, expanding on the white lotus much more, expanding the spirit world to be beyond just roku, and the lion turtle. The lion turtle really did feel like a deus ex machina and confused our high school selves . It really wasn't until after repeated viewings and Korra that I think we understood it more completely but I think and and the lion turtle could have explored the moral and value struggles aang was going through at the time. Aang should have gone on more of a spirit journey to understand the history of bending and why it works in that way to figure out and learn spirit bending instead of being gifted it. I think the moral struggles and him interacting with the last few avatars could have been one more internal journey aang took to become a fully realized avatar as he understood why bending works the way it does and how that effects and individual...that could have been a perfect explanation for why zuko temporarily lost his bending and I think they could have linked the two ideas together much more clearly so spirit ending wouldn't feel so surprising on first viewing
The other fire colors was such a wasted potential, i always feels like the Water and Earth bendings are much more developed, and are given more love
@@cheetah219 given how rare the blue fire is, it stands to reason the other colors might be rarer still. I always figured before watching the show in full that she has so much chi it saturates her fire, turning it blue.
Its certainly possible, she is the granddaughter to one of the most powerful firebenders in history and at the time, we didnt know much about their Mom. I remember tons of theories surrounding her mom saying she was a secret powerful bender or was a descedent from an avatar which is why azula is so powerful and gifted.
In the flashback episodes, they showed her flames as red and obviously within just a few years they changed to blue. I believe, and i could be completely wrong, that the creators intended that azula had mastered a form of fire bending leading them to be blue. That said, there were real changes to zukos firebending after they met with the dragons just more subtle.
Hell, his flames were on par with azulas, despite the comment. They were equal in ferocity.
If not in the original series, it would have been a great touch that zuko mastered his internal struggles as an adult if his flames were a different colour as an adult

That fight scene out of context is confusing. There is an epic battle against the bad guy, but the music is... sad. If you watched the show fully, you would feel this sadness and it would make sense. Azula is a character with depth, motives, conflicts, traits. She is on the wrong side. Zuko managed to change and develop, but azula has gone mentally sick. To us, it looks like one of these characters is going to die, it is necessary for zuko to win, but it is tragic.

I mean, blue fire is hotter, so for someone who can bend lighting while mentally short-circuiting, it would make sense her fire would simply be more dangerous than normal, another thing to note is that she’s psychotically calculative, her desire to hurt and the focus to plan such hurts would make her able to channel lightning while still being full of rage and would definitely influence her fires to burn hotter

I dont think the hotness is just an expression of rage. When Dragons taught Zuko and Aang, they saw fires of many colors. It could be the source of passion guiding it, but I also think that mastery of the element has a lot to do with it too. Its best shown in Zuko vs Azula. When Zuko firebends, its like he wears his emotions on his sleeves, even when in control, his core style of firebending is that of berserker, its almost reaching out trying to throw his emotions onto others, trying to make them understand, while Azula she sucks them up instead, careful never to spill anything, she bottles them up, take all that power and redirects it. Their demeanor somewhat interchanged in the last Agni Kai, but when it comes to core personality, if firebending is an art, everyone from Ozai to Iroh freely express themselves, while Azula never displays what she is really thinking. Like when she wanted help of Ty Lee, instead of telling how important she is to her or how much she values her, Azula takes those feelings in and acts on them in a controlled, calculated and twisted way.
She is like those people who get quieter the angrier they get, so I think her fire is blue not cause of her intense rage, but cause its purer. Its not colored by what emotion she is feeling, she just fuels it with pure intensity of it.

Less easier to animate, more, allows interactions with other firebenders to contrast with hers. So when she fights Zuko, who is doing what doesn't get lost in the wash during complex interactions.
For people saying Azula's a psychopath, she actually not; she's a Sociopath because she still has feelings and feels things like remorse (ex: when she said sorry to Ty Lee, or expressed that she felt hurt about her mother's actions), a psychopath wouldn't feel or care about any of those things
. Although when she was young she was a little out of it, it was ultimately Ozai who made her what she is. Also I wanted to mention that her mental breakdown at the end proves that she kept those hurt, anger, hateful, sorrowful and lonely emotions buried deep that she finally let out. Psychopaths are usually born with peculiar state of mind and are not influenced much by people, unlike Azula. They also don't really feel empathy or any emotions towards anyone. That's why I think she is sociopath, all the signs point there.

I think she trained for it, because as you can see she has a very different technique than other firebenders, she makes blades with her fire, flies and makes spinning thingies with fire that are not seen in other firebenders hands
I imagined her fire was blue becuase azula felt intense hatred towards herself.
She did anything and everything to be perfect( the standards her father set) becuase she wanted to be loved.
The only time her mother ever really showed emotion to her was when she acted out or was harming others, while her father only showed her any attention/emotion when he wanted her to do something for him or to prove his/her superiority over others.
It didn't help that zuko was constantly getting attention from both her father(negative attention but attention none the less) and mother without zuko doing anything to get it.
Contrary to how she acted and spoke she knew that simmering below the surface was true weakness. And no matter what she did or who she hurt/killed it could never be snuffed out.
It became even more apparent in her scenes with may and tai-lee. She essentially forced there friendship through fear and obligation. And when they turned there backs on her on the boiling rock( and may's epic roast/comback). She reliezed that she did what she did becuase she is desperate for love, companionship, and generally any unsolissited human contact/interaction.
Her mental break in the final was simply unavoidable given these facts.
And hopefully through the comics she can find a way to heal.
Or atleast run into a guy or gal to give her the love she needs.

I think Iroh would be more closely aligned with the fire nation actually, more nationalistic and focused on fire nation superiority. It is implied that his son's death completely changed his entire character.
How long was he a member of the white lotus? If he was for most of his adult life I don't think he'd be just nice ozai. They'd still be radically different rulers.
I think this explains the reason why she would as well as explain to a degree there's too and many other times we see many fire benders bending.
This makes quite a bit of sense and feeds somewhat into my own theory about Azula's blue firebending, which also leads me to say that I don't think it's just because she's angry. Since blue fire is the most oxygenated fire I figure some kind of parallel or analogous enrichment must be going on in Azula's bending, i.e. more chi is being fed in a la a Bunsen Burner, and this is achieved through an advanced bending technique to focus chi in such a way; hence, why Azula is often seen pointing two fingers instead of forming a fist to firebend, to focus the chi into a direct point so it can burn purely. And thus, by having greater rage than anyone else, Azula has more chi to fuel her flames.

I think the best answer is that she has perfectionism/control issues. I remember looking up what causes fire to be blue once before, and it said something about the combustion being complete.
"Complete combustion occurs when there is enough oxygen to completely use up all the reactants. Incomplete combustion occurs when there is not enough oxygen resulting in the production of smoke, and less energy is produced when compared with complete combustion."
"In complete combustion, the burning fuel will produce only water and carbon dioxide (no smoke or other products). The flame is typically blue."
So fire is complicated scientifically, and so it's hard to tie real world fire to firebending. But the answer that makes most sense to me, is that when a firebender creates a fire they are manipulating the combustion process. Most fire created by firebenders are created via incomplete combustion (they don't make sure that the combustion is using up all of reactants). Whereas as Azula has trained herself to be absolutely perfect in regards to her firebending. So she makes sure to make fire via complete combustion.
The complete burning of the fuel would tie in with her control issues (making sure she burned every last speck of fuel available), it produces less smoke (which she might consider low class or shoddy bending), the resulting flames are much hotter (perfectionism), and are typically colored blue (wanting to be unique). It also explains why her fire wasn't blue as a child, she hadn't gotten that far in her training yet (and/or her perfectionism/control issues hadn't gotten that extreme yet).
