Lightning generation is an advanced sub-skill within firebending that allows the user to produce lightning by separating the positive and negative energies internally, before directing it up through the arm and out the fingertips. The technique is extremely precise and deadly and is referred to by some as the "cold blooded fire".

You see I thought this at first but TLOK is set more in the future and you can see the advances in technology so I would assume alot more subendings would become more popular I also thought that maybe it would be easier since there is more electricity around them so the can sense it and recognize it easier
Was lightning thought as new in ATLA? Because that's like creating a new form, over time more people will learn it.
Edit: Okay its not new, but if it was kept secret, then not a lot of people will know about it much less know how to do it, so someone in the royal family(most likely Zuko) let the secret of how to do it out and more people learned it.

@@linuslau7933 Um. Lava bending was still considered as a rare sub skill. However metalbending wasn't. Maybe the reason why lightning bending became a "common" thing in TLOK was the same for the development of metal bending.

Maybe what happens in Azula's case is that she is so used to lightning bending that she can do it without having to concentrate and be calm. So she may be deraged, but there is a disassociated part in her that can create lightning whenever she wants.

I feel really disappointed how LoK made so many things feel ordinary. Lightning was such a unique and special ability in ATLA, but LoK made it look like basically every other bender could do it :(
Or surprise, but not all firebenders are able to do lightbending in LoK. There are literally less than ten people with that skill in the entire show.

You have to allow a sequel to be a sequel. Lightning bendings uniqueness isn't necessary in LOK. It was for ATLA, but not LOK. LOK moved on to newer territory.
Well that’s the point of the show. It took bending into the modern society, and it wouldn’t make sense after 100+ years lightning is still unheard of. Same with metal bending. In ATLA we saw the origins of these techniques, and in LoK, we saw the effects and how people adapted to it

I wish lighting bending was a extremely difficult and rare skill to master like blood bending.but I feel like it got nerfed in the Korra.

Yeah I feel the same. In avatar they made it seem like it was special and rare and when I saw it in korra i thought wow so I guess it's so common that it's used in jobs and that took away from the rarity and how special it was. I know it should get a little more widespread over time but it shouldn't be to the point where it's used in jobs. It's not as special anymore.
kevin sims so does computers when it first got invented. Korra is set on progressive and industrial times and it makes sense to use lightning to bring a city power
@@francofranco9815 its crazy because lightning bending seemed like only the fire nation royal family were the ones able to do it or teach it; iroh, azula, ozai. Back in the kyoshi comics it was mentioned that only 1 person in the whole fire nation was able to do it which I believe he had royal family ties. After kyoshi in aangs journey we see only 3 people use it. Now 60 years later we find it's so common that its used as a job. One can say look how metal bending came up but it didnt mention anything about there being a school for lightning bending. It just doesnt add up good enough. I do believe that lightning bending is a more difficult technique than metal bending due to the fact of whats required to make it work.

I always thought the reason lightning was so rare at first was because of the mindset of fire benders at the time and knowledge of it being limited. Its implied that it takes a certain level of concentration and a stable mind to use, but fire benders at the time used anger as a source of bending, so they couldn't hit that balance. Couple that with knowledge of it's existence, let alone the actual process/concept of how to do it, being limited to basically the royal family, I always figured that once it got out it would be more common (just like in Korra)
Keep in mind that lightning bending, at least at the top 3 most dangerous forms of bending (Lava and blood probably being more dangerous), is not only used for power plants, but it's also a minimum wage labor, since Mako didn't seem to really be making much money out of it...

It probably the most dangerous coz it kills upon hitting and is fastest.
Lavadening is slower. And skilled firebenders could drain the heat away from it like sozin did.
Bloodbending is limited coz of the full moon use (except for the op yakone family). Amon shouldn't have recovered from being shot with lightning. That was total BS.

@@CelVini joking aside, I always felt like atla lighting bending WAS a different style or drew from a different source. While lok the people developed their own version that didn't draw from fron separating chi, which was easier, but weaker
@@theelderworm9134 Metalbending was rare too. But now a police force and a whole city can use it. 70 years can do a lot yet people are mad that it's not as rare. Suyin beifong's whole city can metal bend while in atla toph was holding an academy where she can teach others. Things became a lot more common because of time.

Zolt created a unique lightning technique and taught it to everyone in the Republic, including Mako. Zolt's technique itself was that he could create lightning very quickly. Azula and Iroh nervously smoke on the sidelines. Zolt could support her for a very long time. And he also knew how to redirect it ..
I love how as Azula became unhinged, she used lightning more and more. It shows an unstable, unpredictable, and thoroughly destructive side of her (just like lightning).

Understand Lightining bending became common, but it became weaker. No person in the world can kill someone with the electricity they generate, on the other hand Ozai, Azula and Iroh could just kill with the lightining.

zuko redirected azula's lightening many times, but he never tried to learn it by himself, as we all know azula was a fire bending prodigy, later she learnt how to redirect lightning by herself. so azula was and azula will be greatest fire bender ever.
Lightning bending became more common in LOK because people became smarter. The level of education improved as society developed. A greater understanding of how electricity is generation most likely contributed to the rise in lightning benders.

I'm confused why so ONLY WE the audience can see air bending so we know what going on right? bc that's what other Avatar related channels have said, so if in the Avatar world you can't see air bending then how to they dodge air bending attacks which we have seen a lot of times in both Avatar and Korra. The dust particles makes it visible and when there is no dust you would see a distortion in the air
Lets be honest, Azula’s comet-buffed lightning during the duel was the single most outrageous display of bending that the series has ever seen

i think to use lightning you either need to be at peace or as far from it to use it that would explain Azula because she was really never stable mentally.
Fire - Lightning bending and redirection, combustion bending, (spiritual) energy bending, (physical) energy or heat bending & redirection. Also the colored flames like Azula's blue flame & the Dancing Dragon technique. It's stated that Azula's blue flames are hotter than normal flame so probably as Earth bending is to lava bending so Fire ending is to Blue fire bending. Also, bending Lightning while restrained or even just shooting out a spark with no physical effort is Psychic Fire Bending; on par with Amon's Psychic Blood Bending & greater than Boomie's Psychic Earth Bending.
In my humble opinion.
I loved seeing Azula generate lightning because there was just this way she lightning bend that was hypnotizing and effortless at the same time. Iroh’s style was calm and fluid like waterbending while Ozai’s style was brute force, but Azula’s style was something else. Zuko is powerful and was blessed by dragons, but Azula was always a firebending genius and has such fine control over both firebending and lightning generation even when she’s mentally unstable. That’s a true prodigy.
The love the scene where Mako shoots to bolts of lightning thus redirecting and shooting lightning at the same time.

I always found Lightning Bending so evil cause of Azula and Ozai using it so much then Mako almost redeemed the bending in a way for using it for good only and not evil
It's weird to see Mako using his lightning for good and for defense because we usually see Azula and Ozai used lightning to kill someone. Kinda like how Tenzin and Zaheer use Airbending to offense while Aang always used it to defense.

4:40 regulate the voltage of the lightning so he doesn’t kill, just stun? 1st of all, lightning needs an extremely high voltage level, becouse that is what’s needed to ionize the air, allowing the electrons to flow through it. 2nd, when in a car, you’re not on the ground, you!re on rubber wheels which are incredible insulators, so i guess if in the right circumstances, you would be able to survive a lightning strike in a car.

The movement is more for proper form so you guide the lightning out of your body. Separating the energies in a fire bender is what generates it, so a seasoned lightning user wouldn't technically have to move much at all if they controlled the flow of energy well enough
Boy, when it really comes down to it, lightning benders heavily rely on that power, especially someone like Azula
I disagree. Azula can still back herself up with traditional fire bending.
That was more so Mako and other LoK firebenders than someone like Iroh and Azula.
I honestly think it was just a personal preference for her I mean she could've just used her bad ass blue flames which apparently are way hotter than regular 🔥 to take down her opponents.

by entering the void, this ultra rare skill will allow the bender to become as light as air and will allow you to fly
- spirit projection... by being able to do this, you are able to project your spirit into the atmosphere, and sense the spirits/presences of others, you can do what spirits can
WATERBENDING - bloodbending...
by using this technique of bending, you would need a full moon to be able to bend the blood in your enemies and physically control them, while some don’t need the full moons strength in order to bend, it would take an awful lot of practice and skill
- healing...
to use this skill, you would need water to use it to heal yourself, with this rare ability, you can heal most wounds
EARTHBENDING - metalbending...
by bending metal, you can do what the majority can’t and wish to do, being able to bend this material is one heck of a ability
lavabending... with this extremely rare skill, an earthbender can make molten lava out of rock, and control the lava, only two people are known to have ever bend lava
FIREBENDING - lightning summoning...
the ability to shoot lightning/redirect it is dangerous, only a select few have the skill and can master it
- combustion... this extremely rare ability grants the bender to be able to create explosions using the mind, there’s only two known benders to harness this ability
I would argue that both Zuko and Aang technically demonstrated the ability to lightning bend via redirection, they just weren't able to conjure lightning themselves. Being able to take that lightning and pass it on is an ability only a firebender can achieve because only firebenders can bend lightning in any form. A water bender would not be able to redirect lightning, as it is not an element that can be bent by a water bender. The redirection technique is a clear example of lightning bending, which technically makes both Zuko and Aang lightning benders at that time. They were only limited in their ability to generate it.
Interestingly, Iroh said that lightning redirection is derived from water bending movements. In the real world, lightning redirection is likely to take inspiration from taichi sword hand techniques, just as water bending is from taichi.

God Of All idk, they showed me pro’s like the best of the best could lightning bend, a skill that genuinely took time and patience to master, and even though people knew of its existence they struggled to even try, now they telling me people in factories can do it
@@moks4224 it was said only high ranking people and the royal family knows how to bend lightning, which means not all people get to know or learn how to bend it, the higher ups just doesn't want normal people to know how to bend it. Which means it's not that hard to bend, hence people in LOK who doesn't abide to the rules of the tyranny of the past firelords began to taught normal benders lightning

Alexandra Pramesti it is not easy to bend 💀 iroh explained there is a high likely hood that you could die, just think about it, why wouldn’t the fire lord not want lightning benders on his team, they could win all fights with the water tribes, you can’t say they’d overthrow him, they could have done that regardless, and he’s also trained enough to redirect it
Nobody's gonna talk about mako instantly charging lightning while balancing on three rocks while being attacked he had enough concentration while that was happening

kuurocks He has to learn the origin of lighting generation before committing to advance to do lightning generation. Iroh is good at lightning generation.
after the 100 years war ended and the fire nation opened itself to the world knowledge became widespread, not only reserved to the elites, so more people could have the chance to learn the technique, but it was still a big hurdle, hence the small amount of people who can do it, kinda like metalbending

yow guys chill the idea of why lightning bending became so common is like realworld coffee making, there was once in our timeline coffee was so rare and antique beverages, nowaday almost everyone can produce it. so over long time they learn how to make it easier for people to master it too.

Im sorry im alil slow but in the beginning cut scene zuko's uncle explained the energy is surrounding them. Yet you said that the energy is internal for lightning bending. So is it Internal or external energies? and does the energy have good and bad to them?
Waterbenders - bloodbending, healing
Earthbenders - metalbending, sandbending, lavabending
Firebenders - lightningbending, combustion(sparky sparky boom man)
Airbenders - flight, spiritual projection, oxygen bending, and fartbending

No it just wasn’t taught to normal fire benders. In Avatar the last bender only Royals and higher ups knew about the technique.

One must have a calm mind and clear thoughts to be able to separate the yin and yang energies.
It never had anything to do with how high you ranked up. Since not even Zuko could lightning bend due to his own inner struggle.
So it's pretty bs that someone like mako, or any average Joe who we don't even know, can just use the high-level advanced technique.
And i don't wanna hear the argument of "Well you don't know. Maybe all those background Characters we see lightning bending are completely calm in mind" that's dumb to assume that since we see mako (A dude who can't even Decide which mediocre chick he wants to bang) bending Lightning with ease in the very same scene.
So yes, TLOK took a highly advanced technique, that had clear rules of what you had to do in order to be able to use it. And threw it out the window because they thought the idea of having lightning bending as a job would be cool for their new steampunk setting.
They retconned it, plain and simple.
I'm tired of seeing Korra fans defending this with "It's just progression" just because they don't want to admit it's a flaw with the show.

See Azula in that moment, though she was legit going crazy, was still completely self assure.
She had completely at that point believed she was alone and hated by almost everyone, and that everyone was out to get her. And though that's not exactly true, she was still completely sure about that, and thus would be able to lightning bend, especially since in that moment she was completely sure about her intent to kill.
Just look at Ozai. He's someone who believes that he is so untouchable and all mighty without a doubt. And again, even thought it's not true, it still means he is completely self assure and calm of mind with no inner turmoil about who he is, his purpose and so on.
Lighting generation becomes makes several Characters so much more interesting when we use the original rules that the show laid out all those years ago.
If someone as crazy as azula can still lightning bend, it must mean it's because she has no inner turmoil, she is completely sure that everyone is out to get her, and that she's unloved. And as long as she believes that without a doubt (which based on the search we can tell is completely true) she should be able to lightning bend with the original rules in mind.
It isn't until TLOK that the rules basically don't matter anymore, since several fire benders (like Mako, who again can't even Decide cheating or not cheating with his brothers girl) can lightning bend.
It seems that the creators either decided to ignore the original rules of lightning generation, or they simply forgot that's what was required.
Either is possible, but either way you look at it, tlok did very much take an advanced technique that took master fire benders to learn, and gave it out to the average Joe for the sake of the whole steam punk aesthetic.
The real question is, did Zuko ever bend lightning.?

All the elements seemed to have a subset of abilities, however all elements apart from air seem to have more subsets, which makes sense as Airbenders were almost extinct.
Water: Healing, Ice, Blood, Moisture Extraction (plant bending isn't really a subset as they're merely bending the water in plants, much like how earthbenders can control mud)
Fire: Fire Breathing, Lightning
Earth: Metal, Lava, Seismic Sense (sand bending is also a form of earth which doesn't really count)
Air: Flight
We also learn that the original elemental benders were animals, air bisons, dragons, earth moles, and the moon spirit. Air bisons are capable of flight which shows that Airbenders should also be able to fly, while Toph learned how to use seismic sense from earth moles. I believe Iroh learned how to breath fire from the dragons. It's said that the original water benders learned how to bend water from watching the Moon pushing and pulling the tides, making water bending the only element that didn't learn a "special" ability and the only element to not originally learn from an animal.
This however opens up the possibility that airbenders could still have another subset of abilities other than flight, as all other elements have self discovered abilities such as bloodbending, metalbending, and lightningbending. My hypothesis is soundbending. Sound is the vibration of molecules, by vibrating air they could create sound. If done violently and strong enough, they'd have enough force to even create a sonic boom, or reach fatal decibel levels. On minor levels, one could even change the sound of their voice, maybe to the point of perfectly imitating another's, much like how helium can affect the pitch of your voice. Also, air can be compressed and released all at once, effectively creating a bomb.
Airbenders never really focused on developing their element into varieties as Air itself is limitless in its pure form. Aang and others have been seen to manipulate gasses ,steams and vapors, boost speed by running with air, run on air scooters, fight with air wheels (Tenzin) and use air spouts to float in the air. There is actually no need for variation, because air is literally infinite in its uses.
The flight comes from the Air Nomad's focus on spirituality and true freedom, a uniquely introspective way to use one's powers. Flight is not an "air"power as much as it is a "spirit"power. Unalaq was a very spiritual Water Bender, as was the Shaman from the Fire Sage island. The Shaman could use a special multicolored fire to heal Korra and Unalaq mastered Spirit Bending without being an Avatar. Hence someone like Guru Laghima and Zaheer could tap into the spiritual side of their element and be able to fly independently.
Azula was unstable when generating lightning but she was sure that she had to become fire lord and defeat her brother, zuko was still attempting to figure out his path in life
