I take my hat off to Greg LoPiccolo for composing such an atmospheric game soundtrack - the reactor level music used to give me shivers when I played the game as a kid (I was eight when this came out) and playing the enhanced edition on Steam nearly thirty years later still gives me a thrill. There can’t be many games of that age that still hold their own (alright, graphics have come a looooong way) as an immersive experience - I’m now waiting the long list of “games that have aged well”... 😁
This game is 11 years older than I am and I (almost) grew up with the modern gaming scene. Yet when I beat System Shock for the first time the other day…it’s simply one of the greatest games I’ve ever played and easily is going on my list of all time favorites to stay. I’ve already beaten it for a second time. I am now obsessed.
@@Merudiana-the-local-demoness Now do yourself a favour by playing through the Thief series ;) Note: skip Thief 4, everyone agrees it's not a proper Thief game.
@@user-og6hl6lv7p Thief is actually why I decided to pull the trigger on System Shock…although it’s not really my thing. I find it a bit too jank like System Shock 2, but it’s still good with impressive lighting and world design. Not to mention the unique stealth approach that no other first person game had. Really good game, just not my personal cup of tea. Oh yeah, the cutscenes are awesome!

FUCK? Doom did not make SS possible. Learn your gaming history man. They came out in the same time period, but got developed by different people with different ambitions. The engine system shock uses came before the doom engine. It is its own separate thing. Doom was commercial sucessfull. Doom is the HalfLife of the early 90s. It blocked (among other things) far superior games the chance to be sucessfull.
"Oh I shall compare Doom to SS :) And I shall do it again....and again....and again." And then you'll look like an ignorant fool again....and again....and again. "I'll also quote some lines from Looking Glass themselves "We wanted to make Doom with more adventure elements."" Care to provide a source on that quote? because either you pulled that out of your ass or its OUT OF CONTEXT, mainly because it doesn't make any sense: SS and DoomB started development around the same time(at the end of 1992), DoomB being the simplest(i.e. the stupider) was finished a year before SS release, so unless LGS had a time machine i doubt SS was based on DoomB. Also LGS designers have said MANY times that SS was based around Ultima Underworld, here's a quote from the SS wikipedia article: "According to Church, the team believed that they had made "too many dungeon games";[1] and Neurath later explained that they were experiencing burnout after the rushed development of Ultima Underworld II.[20] As a result, they decided to create another "immersive simulation game", but without a fantasy setting. They briefly considered placing the game in modern day, but Church said that the idea was rejected because "it [would] just beg so many questions: why can't I pick up the phone, why can't I get on the train, and so on". Church returned to Looking Glass in Massachusetts, where he, Neurath and Grossman brainstormed possible science fiction settings for the game.[3] According to Spector, the game was initially titled "Alien Commander" and was a spin-off of the Wing Commander series; however, this idea was soon replaced entirely. Spector said that they enjoyed not being attached to an existing franchise, because it meant that they "could basically do whatever [they] liked"" Here's another one: "Grossman built on ideas that he first explored while writing and designing Ultima Underworld II's tomb dimension, which he later called a "mini-prototype" for System Shock." Sorry but i don't see DoomB mentioned anywhere. "If you are stupid enough to turn your back on the fact Doom preeeetty much started the craze then go away." Doomb started a craze on crappy fpses, where each game was a series of shitty dungeons with boring unimaginative weapons and fighting the same 5 monsters for 30 levels(i.e.shitty dungeons). "I bet you werEn't even alive when it first came out to know that 9/10 couldn't even play SS1, you needed a VERY specific set of parts or it didnt work." Who gives a shit how many people could run the game on release, what the fuck that has to do with anything i said, congratulations: you know some trivia about SS i guess.. And by the way, i'm old enough to remember how by the end of the 90s everyone was sick and tired of Doom and its clones(to the point that pretty much all doomclones franchises died after maybe 2 games and nobody gave a shit), and i'm old enough to know that FPS EXISTED LONG BEFORE DoomB and Wolfenstein3D, a fact that you seem to ignore completely. "Noooow don't get me wrong, I love SS1 and think Doom is ok but you, my little millenial need to do some history lessons." You're clearly under qualified to discuss about this, I think you're the one who need some history lessons pal.
Next to Reactor Level and Medical, this is probably one of my favorite tracks in the game, the way it kind of makes you feel like it's just you and SHODAN now...
All these comments about who will remember MW2, and my first thought is MW2 did turn 20 this year, and I still remember it perfectly. Then I realize people aren't talking about 31st Century Combat and frown.
Console gamers man, they changed the whole gaming atmosphere. They are like drug addicts who want pleasure stimulus with the press of the controller button. Developers cater to this addiction leaving less of a reason to create a game with deep interaction and storyline. Consoles ruined the vibe PC games generated in the 80's 90's. Damn. I suddenly got a hankering for MAX Mechanized Assault and Exploration.

@Acantophis3rd I don't see many fanboys in truth. For most people it's a social thing - they don't play certain games / watch certain movies / read books because they are not mainstream, and they want to fit in. They don't really care about the game itself, and they can't enjoy games like we do. It is sad, they really are missing out.
I hope that one day someone realizes the value of the System Shock name. Preferably not EA, who are the current owners of the license. They shat all over Mass Effect and Ultima, so why not System Shock?
System shock never REALLY belonged to EA. The second game was released by them but all the work and the rights belonged to Looking Glass. After it closed the game got into ownership limbo and lucky for you, it was bought by Nightdive. They released an enhanced edition of the first game in 2015 and now they're working on a remake, SS2 enhanced edition and a third installment
@agent008t True that. In my opinion, it's the mass-influx of these jackasses into gaming that has totally ruined the multiplayer experience. It use to be fun to play and goof around with other people, and we all had good times with it. Now it's a bunch of hard-ons running around, trying to tell you what to do, cussing you out, calling others stupid, and other antisocial behaviour that would get their teeth knocked out in real life. I don't even play online anymore. It's not worth it.
@agent008t Dude, I hardly remember it after 6 months. I only remember some parts fighting through a DC residential area, and when you light the flare on top of one of the smouldering Capitol buildings. Those were some intense scenes, but I'll never forget ALL of System Shock 1 and 2. Quality sure took a blow to graphics and explosions. Kinda like the film industry. Stupid mass-marketed crap and the idiots too stupid to consume anything intelligent.
You do realize you are calling pretty much every gamer a COD fanatic who always sticks with Activision even though they release the same shit every year.
Yes, at first I was skeptical and thought it was going to be a bad game due to my poor evaluation of online gsmeplay videos. It's one of those games that you have to play to see how phenomenal it is, gameplay videos dont do it justice.
Played in when it came out. This game ain't about mechanics, grappling, bunnyhopping, stealthbars, rocket jumps or takedowns its the story, the atmosphere and general design that makes it great.
I wasn't a PC gamer back in the day, so when I inherited my cousin's DOS (even though I wanted his Macintosh) I made the ultimate mistake of having this be my 4th PC game (I also had Alone in the Dark, and the other two I can't remember besides them being Adventure games) I've ever owned. Lord, let me tell you, it was horrible trying to manipulate the jumbled ass controls. I understand now that this was a very ambitious UI system any game has ever had, especially for a 3D action adventure game, but god was it confusing and slow. I'm glad the sequel outshines it by a million. Except that I personally think this game has the superior soundtrack.

And don't you dare to forget to turn those shields back off once they're dead! That's just wasteful.
