In one of Microsoft's antitrust documents, they were talking about the Mac OS X Tiger announcement through e-mail, and were shocked, or at least I think they were, about how their OS had features for Longhorn/Vista "word by word'. One of them installed it on their Macs, and were amazed by it. They had issues about implementing WinFS and working some Spotlight-like search features, yet here they are. To be fair, the Gadgets from Vista was in development as early as 2002 or 2003 after they finished working XP, though I don't know if Apple copied them when working on Tiger.

    • @josemanuque
      @josemanuque 11 месяцев назад +19

@@raven4k998 Well it's common sense. Apple only makes that many Macs while there are hundreds if not thousands of brands and models of machines which all come with Windows preinstalled. Also since Windows 95 and XP were very popular, many people, specially old people, are very familiar with Windows and other Microsoft products like Office, making the switch to another (superior) OS like Mac OS or GNU/Linux more difficult.
And yes, Windows has been fundamentally a copy of Mac OS from its early days, hence why there was a lawsuit between both companies until both made a deal in the late 90's to settle it helping Microsoft with their anti-trust problems and Apple with their economical problems.

Now in hardware Apple is making some of the best processors in the market. I would suggest you to check the M1 and M2 Apple Silicon chips as it seems you haven’t. They outperform x86 (processor architecture used in almost any other PC) in performance per watt. New Mac laptops have a huge advantage in battery life compared with all other laptops and having enough power for professionals.
The only thing setting Macs and Linux PCs back is the software dependency of Windows, and in the case of Macs, the ridiculous price Apple sells them

I suppose that depends on how you look at it. This was 2006, work on Longhorn / Vista began in May of 2001 (2 months after OSX was releasednot surprisingly) That means it took MS 5 years to merely achieve the "same functionality" with very similar design even with a road map to follow. They did not raise the bar as they probably should have. They merely met it, and even that is debatable given how many issues there were with it on release. It has taken them almost 2 years to fix it.

Inaccurate. Longhorn turned out to be disaster.. it was just too much for NT 5.x , so they started over with brand new kernel in 2006. Lots of improvements are under the hood and even today windows still uses NT6.X.. sure with 10 they matched the NT version.. but it was just a minor improvement over 6.2 that windows 8 used. Main problem with vista was that it was rushed, they fixed it with sp1, but it was too late by then. Vista walked so 7 could run.
Also work on next version of windows always begins before they even release the current upcoming one. It was not because osx release, lmao.
The only exception was windows 11.. because they planned that to be a service.. they quickly found out it's not possible.. while technically it is... realistically it's not (if they pushed win11 in form of win 10 upgrade, millions of pcs lacking requirements would end up unbootable)
So they went back to releasing new win every 3 years.. and yes before 11 was finished, work on win 12 already started.

Mac OS X has none to very little of the code from Mac OS 9 and earlier. Mac OS 9 had many problems that couldn't be solved just by adding it to the OS, like lack of memory protection (If one app crashes everything does), and lack of real multitasking.
They first tried to make their own kernel, but it wasn't good, so they used a BSD Unix-based kernel and developed a completely new OS on it. Of course they made the UI similar so people would recognize it.

Windows had most of it's feature's before OS X. And saying IE copied Safari is a lie. They had IE on Windows And pre OS X macs. It's vice versa, folks. I can't believe they made fun of the activation screen. Windows is widely used. OS X isn't. Activation is there to prevent piracy online. And you know how a "Hackintosh" is made? By pirating OS X because there is no activation or key. After seeing Microsoft "redesign" the Windows UI, Apple decided to do the same thing in OS X. Now I don't want to sound like a fanboy, I actually enjoy using OS X too. And it's not like either are perfect. Both have their flaws. Both have their gains. And I agree with you. It's just sad to see two amazing companies biting at each other. They both used to innovate and share with each other! They were like nice kids. Now it's really just a mess. OS X is sloppy in some areas like upgrading and performance. Windows is the same way. I would like to see both companies working together again. Microsoft and Apple are like Nvidia and AMD. They are rivals, yes. But they can overcome that. I totally agree with you and I hope you read this.

      1. Control panel- before Mac OS x, Settings were mostly found in form of files called control panels. though windows stole the name, they put all the settings in one place. Apple stole the idea and called it system preferences
2.Time machine- Apple stole the Concept of backup and restoring, windows had it first
3.Remote desktop connection-apple added a screen sharing program to mac OS and it lets you to view and control a another connected mac but windows users had this functionality since xp
      4. minimizing programs-windows had this feature for a very long time. it basically lets you minimize and keeps it on the task bar unless you open it but apple stole this idea and put it in mac os X 10.6.
5.The whole File explorer layout- Windows ha did everything before mac but it wasnt until mac OS slowly using some of the layout of file explorer in their operating systems like the forward and back buttons and address bar etc

Make it look even MORE like OSX by adding a dock which was missing from Vista and taking the one difference between Widgets and Gadgets and making the whole thing identical by placing their "gadgets" in a separate environment just like OSX's Dashboard. Vista was not a bad OS in and of itself, but it did suffer from a combination of problems at its launch. There were some issues with the RTM build, such as slow network copy times, and the user account control being triggered too often. The jump from NT 5.x to NT 6.x caused compatibility issues with certain applications, and there were issues with nonexistent drivers due to the introduction of a new driver model.
However, the biggest problem, as far as I'm concerned, was OEMs that tried to put overloaded Vista on systems whose hardware could barely support it. Vista did mature into a stable, usable OS over the course of its shelf life. Service Pack 1 & 2 resolved many issues, device drivers and updated applications became available, and the OEMs started using correct hardware. I use Vista SP2 today as my main OS, and I can say I am very impressed and happy with it. It's lightning fast with SP2 and it will run all the latest stuff, and it gets higher FPS than Windows 7 with games.

I know that, but still, there are people that are bashing Vista to death in this comment section, so I just thought I'd help it out. Besides, Vista didn't copy OS X, fact is that Apple just got it to the market first. For example, the sidebar with gadgets, that was implemented into Windows Longhorn Build 4001, an early beta of Vista that was made in 2002, 3 years before apple included widgets in Mac OS X in 2005 with Tiger. Just something to think about. I'm not much of a Mac vs PC guy nowadays, they are both good in their own ways, and I enjoy using both Windows Vista SP2 and Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion at home. Both work great and are very stable, and I use them for different things.

    • @therappermcjosiah4850

Yes one of the biggest issues was OEM's putting Vista on computers with super low specs & performance similar to the Windows XP Netbooks that would be selling just a few years after the release of Vista.
People where going & buying Vista then installing it one machines with Pentium 4's, 1GB of Ram, slow barley capable DirectX 8 or 9 GPU's, & slow 40GB to 80GB IDE hard drives, then complaining why Vista was running so slow.
OEM's where installing it on laptops & desktops with slow Intel Celerons, & Intel Pentium 4's, 512MB of Ram, GMA 900's graphics(Absolute trash graphics), & small & slow 5400RPM 80GB, & people buying them complained Vista sucked when running it on one of these systems.
Now this isn't completely Microsoft's fault as Microsoft only created Windows Vista to run on hardware they thought would be the standard by it's release(Though the big problem is they rushed production when they should of took a little more time on perfecting it). OEM's at the time where doing what they do now, creating slow crappy laptops & then selling them to the tech illiterate public for gain. Instead of keep power up to the time off what it should of been, OEM's would build computers using older or super cheap part's to save money, & then selling them at high prices. Because of that alot of the budget & midrange OEM markets where held back from adapting to newer or more powerful stuff available by OEM's to save money on production. Windows Vista basically forced OEM makers to update there hardware to current place at the state of development so Vista could run correctly on them.

But who cares about market share. Like bruh. The first thing is that windows is steadily losing it to other OS'es. Because if you want to be satisfied as a demanding user you go for a macOS. If you want to buy something cheap for education or just the big screen and netflix you go for ChromeOS. And if you want to be the real admin of your PC you go with linux. Gaming is the biggest pillar of windows rn. But console market is growing, and with the rise of game streaming... I just don't see the future for windows.
And your argument about MS Office can be taken even further. Whole iCloud is based on Azure, half of the fkin world is based on Azure. That's why MS stock is still rising, windows is becoming irrelevant. MS knows how to make good things, windows just isn't one of them.

@@ironclad3207 But you really won't beed all that processing power to run games, and the difference between pcs and consoles is becoming less and less worth it. There will always be a PC gaming market because of esport, but look at cars for example. Pretty much nobody uses hypercars, they both can transport your groceries. And don't try to sell me on pc upgradeability, couse most of the times it's about more than GPU, and if you want to change CPU it's like; mmm I need a new MOBA, ooo new ram is also interesting option, and then I will also need new power supply. PC is hypercar of gaming, but also only under certain conditions. Current gen consoles are way more capable than average PC's, imagine that a 1050ti is still the most popular GPU. High end pcs on the other hand are really those ultimate purchases, not worth it for most of players rn, and I predict that these will decline over time even more, with the rise of cloud gaming and cloud computing in general.
