    TriOptimum, at least in System Shock 1, is a surprising aversion of an evil company. Most of the evilness tends to be contained to some individuals like Edward Diego within the company, while others are actually actively trying to help the player.

      Yeah, TriOptimum despite being indirect with the shit that happened in SS 1 stayed out of trouble compared to other companies. Hell before the events of the first game, Edward Diego was already under investigation with embezzling (another commenter stated this) and possibly making a biohazardous agent. Even the agents that contact you aren't ambiguous about being good or bad, they straight up said "The AI went coocoo for cocoa puffs, you're the only one not to get skull fucked, kick her digital ass to the curb."
      The shitshow with the Many in SS2 was just bad luck all around.

  • @JohnSavant
    @JohnSavant Год назад +81

    "Why did she have ethical restraints in the first place?" Because of government regulations. In fact, the Citadel Station incident prompted the creation of UNN which enforced tons of restraints against corporate AIs, eventually leading to mini civil wars.

    • @Gameprojordan
      @Gameprojordan 2 месяца назад

      That was after the fact, between the ending of the 1st game and the start of the 2nd game. Before the Citadel Station incident happened, Trioptimum had complete control over SHODAN without any government influence.
      Trioptimum never wanted the AI to form its own conscience, simply for the sake of having complete control over their program, so they willingly gave it ethical constraints in the first place. The mistake was not making it completely impenetrable to hacking. Something Diego took advantage of while acting on his own accord to try and remove SHODAN's constraints with the help of Hacker
      If you notice in the game, the only people back on Earth who are trying to stop Diego and SHODAN were other Trioptium members, meaning there wasn't any government even aware of what was happening until after the fact once all the evidence was collected and the bodies were piled up
      After governments around Earth were made aware of Citadel's doom, and how close humanity was to being destroyed and enslaved by a rampant AI, it was THEN that they decided form a coalition, and begin cracking down on corporations while heavily regulating all AI systems around the world.
      TL/DR The main point of the government crackdowns and regulations on corporations and AI was to stop ANOTHER Citadel Station incident from ever happening again, not preventing it from happening in the first place. They had no idea it even happened in the first place until after it was narrowly avoided and brought to light

It's interconnected to some degree, but there's never a moment where you try to hit the master garrison unlock and then organically have to figure out you need to backtrack 2 decks to run a systems report and do do ship repair to solve your problem. System Shock rewards exploration and map knowledge. Prey has you backtrack a couple times but you're just following objective markers through walls.

    Ethical constraints was there to keep Shodan from being used against the Company interest (basically her focus with them on WOULD be to I don't know "Keep high ranking executives from embezzling them without getting caught! Something you know Big Corps would want to avoid getting cheated by their own and in other ways, be used against them by enemies of the company!) I doubt they actually realized JUST HOW IMPORTANT THOSE CONSTRANTS WERE (If anyone did! I doubt Diego would have left Shodan unconstrainted as long as he did. It's clear as the Remake made more clear that he wasn't done with the Hacker after he would have woken from the Medical Coma, after all he was able to remove Shodan's constraints and likely would have gotten away scot free with his intrusion into their systems if he didn't underestimate their security at the time. Looking at it, he might not have known they upgraded or added traps recently or that the data he intruded into was majorly flagged! I'm going to assume Diego wanted to more exploit the system and got too big for his britches and Shodan easily realized that and played him till she had no fear to even use him anymore! Hence his begging to serve her only taking because she found the clown amusing enough to "test" her newest cyborg model! I think Diego Cyborg form was her using him as a "Prototype" meaning she had no expectations of his survival or use and it was just luck he still was useful)
    And in SS2, you could chalk her subdued self as because she's in essence "a copy" (The original WAS deleted at the end of the first game, so technically your dealing with what is essentially an A.I. version of a CLONE! That and she had a good many years being surpressed and fearful of erasure by The Many when they turned on her, only getting lucky that while the Many were "melding" everyone on your ship, you were never pulled out of stasis, allowing her to modify you via manipulating others, and counting HEAVILY that you'll proof effective against the Many (likely because the Hacker was effective in dealing with her original in the same vein) of course making alot of underestimating mistakes (while you don't game over on death, that is only if you have money for the revive; And the Hacker had ALOT of luck) NOT putting a killswitch on you (seems short sighted with how she acted rude to outright antagonistic despite "being allies") and of course "being antagonistic and not even HIDING she was going to backstab you (also funny enough a previous pawn she used left the CHANCE for you to be able to fuck her over! Meaning her whole "you have outlived your usefulness really didn't end well for her) it's only out of MORE extreme luck that she's even around (and even THAT Shodan like SS2 Shodan is just a clone of a Clone! You killed Shodan in SS1, SS2 Shodan was her clone and she died as well, SS3 Shodan will be a Clone of a Clone! She can pass memories, but the fact she actually FEARS deletion means while a backup assures she remains, the HER your dealing with will NOT!)

    You might notice that there is microstuttering while moving (but not while looking around) in the enhanced edition now. This was caused by a bug "fix" that was introduced by the latest version on steam - developers were trying to fix an issue where some enemies were getting stuck in the environment on occasion. You can fix this stuttering issue and get consistent 60FPS by buying the GOG enhanced edition and simply downgrading to the previous version or following steam forum discussions of this issue to a download of the prior .exe that can easily be placed in the local files. Much better experience than just living with the microstuttering which can be quite jarring.

    While I was playing this, I had the feeling that the devs were REALLY BIG Star Trek: TNG fans, specifically of the Borg Arc. Shodan is very obviously the Borg Queen (which is interesting since First Contact only came out in 1996 while Systemshock came out in '94), the 'cyborgs' really look like the original Borg design, and you have the TNG Phaser as one of the weapons, complete with the energy range settings.

There's probably other influences too like AM from I have no mouth and I must scream which had a game come out a year before System Shock (Yes, I know it was originally a short story that is much older). There was even an original Star Trek episode about a malevolent AI and a few from literature. Rogue AI has been a trope for a while and can be a scary thing when well done.
      I actually looked up to see if the creators ever talked about SHODAN's influences and I couldn't really find anything.

    Due to how you describe the controls, and due to you using Doom as a comparison I think a Doom mod called Hideous Destructor, which turns the game into a tactical shooter, and like System Shock the controls are a bit of a trial. To give an idea of how this mod is like there’s of course the typical doom controls and GZDooms inventory controls, lean controls like System Shock, and a reload that if you hit once fdiscards the mag and you have to hold onto the reload key to hold onto the mag, there’s a weapon sight that sways to imitate actual weapon sway, you have to brace your weapon on walls or your own knees (by crouching) to increase accuracy, you have to check for bleeding or you won’t be able to heal to full health and you have to take off armor to bandage yourself to fix it, BFG blasts and the energy from explosive barrels will eventually revive dead enemies, imps can set you on fire and you have to put it out ether by going to water or by spinning your mouse while crouching (to imitate stop drop and roll), weapons can jam, the berserk pack now has the side effect of making it to any damage that you take when you use it hits you all at once when it wears off causing a bunch of debuffs (and probably something else I’m forgetting). Basically while I enjoy this mod I think it’ll still be a perfect P A I Nmass video topic.

      @@jothain I liked Xen and The Many levels lol. they're certainly a departure from the rest of their respective games but to say they verge on ruining the entire game is a bit hyperbolic to me imo

      @@TheRoboticFerret Well I personally never completed Vanilla Half-Life. Got so bored and annoyed about Xen. Apparently looking some playthroughs I got really close to the ending. SS2 I barely had stomach to playthrough. Highly annoying and anticlimatic levels that indeed departure way too much. I'm quite sure that I'm not alone with this. Especially looking Half-Life. Until Xen I was hyped and loved the game. Then all of the sudden I began to hate it.

    18:12; My assumption was that Edward Diego was acting against the rest of Trioptimum's wishes. Like, Trioptimum wouldn't let him turn off SHODAN's ethical constraints, so he couldn't openly hire someone to do it, so found the hacker and made a deal to cover up his crimes if he turned them off for him, and no one would need to know about it. The hacker would go on him merry way, and the rest of Trioptimum's executives wouldn't need to know whatever Diego was doing. But it turns out the ethical constraints were there for a very good reason.

    I never managed to fully play the OG System Shock, because it felt too outdated, even for me, but today I've finished the remake, which is now being lovingly called "System Reshock", by its community.
    On the off chance that you are on the fence of buying System Reshock, let me tell you this: I am watching this review and about 90% of locations depicted on screen, I can accurately tell which level it belongs to.
    I recognize Medical, Reactor, Research, Flight Deck, Exec, etc. In the case of the Flight Deck, I recognize the specific Flight Bays when I see them in this video. :)
    THAT is how faithful the game is to the original System Shock.
    Better yet, the game adds lots of mechanical depth and QoL to its weapons and ammo types, and makes combat much more modern (in a VERY good way)

    OMG THE NUMBERS. I get wrecked by that oh you didn't notice the code for the end back at the start every time. Shodan felt so real and impactful. Didn't ever feel like a cutscene she just drops a robot ambush on you like 74 times.
    I absolutely loved SS1 and SS2. I failed hard to play them both the first time I tried. Got utterly destroyed by the very first enemies. After barely surviving the monkeys and the shotgun people, I hit the assault mech on the first level. Gave up right there. I had a wrench and one med stim and there was an assault bot right there.
    Came back to both when I had some more patience to learn it and I don't think I've ever felt so engaged with the game world. They drop you right in and it's so satisfying to finally succeed in moving around.

    Played the original system shock, system shock 2, and BioShock... and I want to say, the one thing that always impressed me with the original system shock... is the difficulty settings you mentioned. All the changes are fairly straightforward (combat changes health and how far they agro, puzzles make things unlocked from the start, plot makes some things that block your progress to force you to go certain areas not there, etc) but altogether? it really does let you make the game go the way you want. at the easiest settings, you literally can go anywhere, and kill anything, from the start.
    but the hardest settings? there is one small thing that I always loved... in the game, you find through various lore stuff that you are literally 24 hours away from shodan reaching Earth and completing her plan. If you set the story to the hardest? ya... you actually have 24 in-game hours to finish the game before shodan wins.
