    I wonder what that creepy biological growth on the walls is supposed to be. I always thought it was like a precursor to The Many from SS2.

    • @Gameprojordan
      @Gameprojordan 3 года назад +9

      No the yellow looking virus in beta grove is the precursor to the Many. The white bio infestation I think is one of the other few viruses shodan worked on since there were atleast a handful being worked on

    • @Gameprojordan
      @Gameprojordan 3 года назад +6

      For example the humanoid mutants, the zero G mutants, the invisible mutants, the mutant cyborg, and the virus mutant are all created from seperate viruses. So SHODAN was working on atleast 5 different virus strains

    • @Gameprojordan
      @Gameprojordan 3 года назад +2

      My guess is the white Bio infestation is the virus that creates the mutant cyborgs. Since that room you defeat diego in is filled with that white infestation and after you defeat him a bunch of mutant cyborgs teleport into the room

      It was more than likely just a stylistic choice rather than anything to do with plot. The look of those wall and ceiling textures takes heavy inspiration from the works of Swiss artist H.R. Giger (most famous for the design of the Xenomorph in the Alien franchise).

      @enadopato Год назад

      Late but my guess is that’s shodans brain, it’s taking up the whole station so destroying shodan physically will be a bad idea, so that’s why cyber space was the best option to go with

    35:40 I always hated how the music would cut out in Cyberspace. I had hoped that would have been fixed in the recent re-release.

    • @z3tzilla
      @z3tzilla  5 лет назад +11

      I remember re-recording that part for about 10 times and every time the music would just stop or I wouldn't be able to beat SHODAN. I tried fixing it in post but that didn't feel right so I just said fuck it, if that's how the game behaves then that's how it'll be in the video... It's a shame about the re-release though...

    remake is making me miss the weird grey black flesh growth that used to coat the walls and pulsate almost like it was breathing in the original. I can't fathom why the remake got rid of that, it made this deck stand out and now it just looks like every other deck

      Basically you fire a slow moving purple ball that bounces off objects and enemies but deals alot of damage. The downside is the ball can ricochet back towards you and hit you which injures you greatly. It's really not a good weapon. The scorpion smg and laser rapier are the best weapons to use on level 8 and 9

    definitely one of the more interesting doom clones. wish the combat was less irritating at times though, with enemies that fire INSTANTLY upon spotting you.

    • @z3tzilla
      @z3tzilla  8 лет назад +22

      I don't really agree that this was a doom clone in a sence that they were trying to make something like it (or even trying to ride its success). It really has a lot more in common with Ultima Underworld, their previous games.
      As for the enemies that shoot instantly... Yeah, they are annoying and can kill you in seconds if you walk into a trap (that SHODAN does set up for you). However, it creates this tension, you don't really feel safe and I liked that, very immersive.

    • @Dynamo128
      @Dynamo128 8 лет назад +1

      well, doesn't matter what they tried or tried not to make :p ultimately this is an oldschool FPS in the vein of doom and others of the time and was rightfully perceived as one of the first doom competitors, alongside Marathon and Rise of the Triad (and it's interesting how System Shock and Marathon have a lot of shared features, both in gameplay and in story). I never played ultima underworld, but if I recall correctly it is more of a RPG, whereas system shock 1 is a straight FPS, with no rpg elements whatsoever (unlike system shock 2 which is a rpg)
      I agree that it creates tension, but honestly the same could also be said for Doom, Marathon and a lot of other games that actually utilize the same exact traps system shock use, except in those the enemies don't fire instantly. the tension later in the game tends to get replaced by aggravation. still, it's a great game and I'm glad I finished it.

      Dynamo You could not be more utterly and completely incorrect. Sorry, pal. SS is not a “straight up FPS” and it does have progression/RPG elements through upgrades, you just physically find and install them instead of a stats based system. Though the term didn’t exist at the time it’s what’s now known as an “Immersive Sim” and FAR more than just an FPS. Shooting just happens to be your main method of defense. There’s so much more. BioShock took this game’s formula and made it closer to the type pf straight FPS you describe. Not trying to be pedantic but you would be laughed out of any room of people learned about game design in the slightest if you referred to SS1 as a “Doom clone”. Listen to Looking Glass interviews. Read up on it. You are incorrect. An easy mistake to make given its midi soundtrack and first person view so not calling you an idiot or anything. Just educating. :)

    • @KingThrillgore
      @KingThrillgore 5 лет назад +5

      "Doom clone" was actually a common term used to describe FPSes before Quake came out. There have been studies on the interchange of the two terms in publications over time. I genuinely agree that System Shock and games in its mould, like Bioshock (to a degree), Thief, Deus Ex, Dishonored, and Prey (2017) are more akin to being "immersive simulations"

      I know this thread is old but, i find you reasoning for calling this game a "doom" clone appalling...
      This game shares no similarities other then being a fps with doom, I also don't recall doom having free horizontal/vertical view of freedom and better ambient lighting texture graphics.
