Purchased the old manual version of the Samyang 135MM F2 about 7 years ago and it's still the sharpest lens I own. This is a dream come true, can't wait to see your followup testing.
Samyang really know their 135's. I also really like the minimalistic look of the lens itself. Looks clean and modern without big branding or buttons I won't be using.
Thank you for this preview! The portrait photographs that you posted had a yellow tint, did not look at all like the subject. This concerns me because their 85mm f/1.4 AF for Sony also has a yellow tint but I thought they had solved that problem. What do you think? Did you warm up the photographs in post production? Or dial in a white balance that caused it to shift yellow? Thank you.
Hi, the photographs are edited, but on our in-depth review we will show unedited RAW images too (lesson learned: we should've done it in this one too :P)
I already have the manual version and it's fantastic- based on your first look, I might need to consider this one though- initially looks like the image quality is still great. Will be interesting to see the astro performance especially around coma and purple fringing.
Hi James, if you liked the MF for astrophotography you will love this one. So far I only had a chance to shoot at stars for untracked IQ testing and it's really promising. coma and astigmatism are on pair with the MF version. I've tested the infinity focus feature (same as in 24mm f1.8) and it works but not all the time, will be part of our full in depth review to show you it's advantages and faults for astro. But my initial impression is that it is a really worthy upgrade from the MF version even for astro only due to the more precise Manual Focusing.
Hello from S Korea. Loved your review! Loved the design and bokeh of this lens. Does it feel heavy when you put on A7R3? Cuz I'm looking for a telephotolens for travel & snap photo and tamron 70-180 mm and Samyang 135 mm is on my list.
Hi, it did not feel heavy at all. It is really well balanced on the A7RIIIa we used and even after hours of walking for street photography it did not feel heavy at all. If you are happy with a prime lens for your travels this one is definitely a great choice, giving you great IQ in a weather sealed body.
Great video! How does the Samyang compare to the Sigma 135mm in terms of image quality? Also did you experience the infamous 50% battery drain some reviewers have had while using this lens? Thanks!
We did not have a chance to compare it to the Sigma... yet! :D Just like everyone else we have experienced the battery drain issue and reported it to Samyang, who fixed it with a firmware update within' days! So with the latest firmware this issue is gone.
Great video. I hope they bring out an L-mount soon. Whereabouts/what is the first building where you photographed your model? Lovely razor sharp images. Thank you.

Does it have warmer rendering like other Samyang lenses? I assume that green tint in some of the photos is due to editing style and not something caused by the lens :)
hi Toma, yes the green tint was due to editing :D On our full review we will put the unedited RAW files as well as the edited versions, but we wanted to keep this video short as we want to test all features more in depth once the final firmware is out. Yes, you do. Personally I prefer to have the dock over a USB port on the lens. You need to use it once in a blue moon and an open USB port would only collect dust and grime (that could end up on the sensor) or it's an other opening where moisture and dust can get inside... not to mention it's extra manufacturing cost which will need to be added to the cost of each lens instead of a one off purchase with the dock.
Unfortunately, my newly bought lens had a battery drain problem on the A7RIII with the power switched off. A 100% battery will be fully drained in 5 days when powered off without using the camera. My lens is with the AD, Samyang is notified, hoping for a resolution soon!
Hi Ray, sad to hear that. We did not notice this but probably because the lens / camera was used every day :) But I will definitely look into this, thanks for the info!

She says it looks just like what I see then shows us yellow-green tinted photos. Sharp, nice photos, but not the same as what is seen. Btw, none of these things would stop me from purchasing the lens. I mention these points just to say that the best RUclipsrs are honest, not flattering every element of a lens. I want real details, not exaggerations.
Thanks for your comment. Well you're right we should've shown the original photos as well as the edited ones, but as it was just a quick preview we thought to keep that part for the full review. As for the onion rings... I checked the photos and I honestly don't see any. We are trying to be as honest as we can, what you hear is our opinion, if there is something we don't like we will say it, but up to the making of this preview there was nothing about the 135mm that did not impress us :) After the preview there was... but that's for our in-depth review.
ATG says this is what many pros down to amateurs want to have over Japan Zeiss lenses. Only drawback (which many pros don't know): no focus index, no feet & no meter scales marking. So if you like that lousy depth-of-field looks, get it. I wants great depth-of-field on 300/400/500/600 lenses at wide open, which CAN NOT be done.
How many times do you watch the meter scale while shooting? Zeiss has old lenses on horrible price. If something is better and cheaper people will use it.
@@Krinyo666 My staff, pros & I use that features most of the times in sports, weddings & crime scenes. Once you have those features, one can pre-focus /or hyper focal to nail those shots. If you hold a Hasselblad, Rolleiflex or 8X10, you can nail your subject much faster than using AF. Today, newbies don't know that because they have been fooled by paid RUclips's reviewers.
You have a focus scale just not on the lens, when using manual focus you can see the focus scale on the LCD of your camera. I've used full manual cameras as I started photography way before the digital age and used hyper focal so I am familiar with the technique. Modern lenses does not really need such features as focus index as you have absolutely amazing AF with tracking in most cameras. The main reason why there is no focus index on lenses is due to the focus coupling, which is fly-by-wire most of the time, so the focusing ring and the focusing "mechanism" is not coupled. Instead we get a programmable focus ring that you can use for aperture, you can choose between linear and non linear focusing (on the 24-70 f2.8... hopefully coming on the 135 f1.8 too) and other features that are 100% more important than a focus index. The only time you really need focus index is cinema, hence the cinematic lenses still have them.
Come on… stop saying it is a “pre production model/camera/firmware”, you really loose credibility. Also “the bokehballs are awesome, no onion rings”, but you didn’t show us an image that can actually show wether this is the case or not. “The colors are awesome, they show what my eyes see” the main purpose of a lens I believe. Thanks for the info though. Hope to see a full review soon. Cheers
We have to say it as this was a pre-production model. This is one of the main reasons why we have not made a full review yet as there could be changes. Colour rendition is not always accurate, for example our experience with Sony lenses that they tend to make the image colder, while Samyang lenses in the past used to make the image slightly warmer. We are just as excited to try the final version as everyone else and we are planning to make a review giving as much information as we just can, so if you want to know anything about the lens feel free to ask, we will test it! :D

My ATG 19-45/T1.9 (modified from Fuji 19-45/T2.9) has no hyper focal scale just like many others
Uristen you are hungarian! 😄
;) Reméltem, hogy valaki érti a poént :D
@@holdmylenscap7241 Thanks for the feedback. I went out and bought the lens the third day it was at the dealer. So testing it myself now. :D
@Dennis van Tol which shop you got it? Because here in the UK it's only preorder as of now...
@@holdmylenscap7241 I was probably the first here in Holland. I believe there are only 20 at this moment, most of which are still in stores.
@@catchlite5196 you're a lucky one then :) Hope you will enjoy yours just like we enjoy ours. And let us know if you found onion rings in the bokeh :)
"Uristen very big" jo kis elszolàs volt hahaha. Egyvalamit hiànyoltam, nem emlitettéttek meg, hogy melyik kameràn teszteltétek
