Thanks, Manny. I recently purchased the SA-17 and a bunch of accessories initially based on your video. I use it pretty often, it does, however, get super hot, as you mention here. The cropping blades and the Gobo holder on the Optical Spot look much easier to use, but I don't know if I can justify the price difference to upgrade.

Much appreciation Manny, have had my eye on the SA-17 for a while now, but this video changed my mind, going to go with he optical spot instead.
A recommendation, buy the JINBEI DP-ø6 90-150mm. It's the same product, just different name and the price it's the half.
Nanlite has 2 projectors one speacially for the 60 and one for the bigger Bowen’s mount. Been debating on forza or godox..

Hi Manny I'm using the Westcott optical spot, which shorter focal length canon ef lens do you recommend for smaller distances in the studio? The 150mm that comes with it requires too much distance for me for some applications, and I bought a cheap canon manual focus lens 35-80mm but the glass width is so small it blocks a lot of light.
Broncolor's offering is over $3000! Hence, I've been waiting for something affordable like this for years. My first run with the Westcott was great!
It'd be great to get a comparison with the Strobe Pro projection modifier. That accommodates strobes, so we can shoot at f10 and 200 ISO. You can use Canon or Nikon lenses on it.
Manny, I have SK400II lights from godox, and I feel like the modeling bulbs will fit, but I'm curious if you happen to have those lights and had happened to try that combo
How strong led light would I need for something like this? Thinking that it's a 150mm
Good tip with the 50mm canon lens for the Optical Spot. I have that one from Rollei. And the beam really is far too small. I tried this holding my Sony 50mm in front, but that did not work, absolutely nothing to see. Why would it be different with the canon 50mm?

I have the godox version and buying it without knowing it wouldn’t fit my FJ400 was a shock…bought the FJ200 and it works great. Biggest complaint is the GOBO holder it’s a horrible design and never threads right. Having said that being able to use hard light like this though opens up so many possibilities in the studio and is so much fun.
Great Video and comparison. I have the Rollei version which looks pretty much the same like the Westcott. Now my question, are the gobos from Westcott and Godox are the same diameter? Do the godox once fit into the Westcott mounting ring? Want to order some more gobos and don’t know if they fit. Would highly appreciate your recommendation.

i removed the ring inside with the three screws. It fits more lights now.

Great video, thanks. Any comparison of the two on their light-loss? I use the Godox with a Bowens to Profoto adapter on Profoto flashes. And it „costs“ approx. 3.5 stops. Any thoughts on the Westcott with a 50mm? How moch light do you lose?

I have the same issues with the godox, I can't use it on my strobes kind of a bummer
I got no problem with it on my Profoto flashes (with adapter)

@@reneweisz9157 it's not really the Bowens mount, thats an issue. It's more an issue of recessed (e.g. some Profoto, don't know who else) vs. exposed/domed flash-tubes.
@@andikunar7183 sorry for the confusion, you are correct it has nothing to do with the mount, mine happens to be a bowens mount but it is the flash head that it to large and doesn't fit

Am I the only that with Lindsay Adler optical snoot have light spill with the lens .?
PSA: if you are going to use Canon glass on the Optical Spot just know the lens has a memory. So, the last aperture setting you used is what will remain. The Optical Spot will not work well unless the the lens attached was last used WIDE OPEN on the Canon. f8; f10; f14 etc will not allow enough light through the spot for it to work properly. Manny: quick question... using gobos with the Optical Spot I'm not sure I followed your comment, is the gobo holder loose in the Optical Spot ? Thanks
I have pretty much the same thing and I can answer your question (bought this thing like a year ago on amazon for 230 euros). Gobo holder is loose. I thought this is a problem, but worked out for the better because it's possible to change gobo angle on the fly. you can change the angle by about 80 degrees to the right and about 80 degrees to the left
I bought this for 220 USD in China.
I just got the SA-17 based on you...this looks cool but I want to use the 17 for sometime first.... You sold me on that now its like you saying screw that....you didn't go hard on the Cons like you are now......get this one....buy buy lol jkn....

I have the godox version. I find I'm using it less and less. Much like HDR in the 90's, its a fad. I think its quickly fading away. Every youtuber is over using them and they are a pain in the butt to use.
