- Learning How To Dye and Colour A Leather Jacket.
Josh from the Leather Repair Company shows you how to do this in this video and what products you need.
The first step is buying a DIY leather repair kit to re dye and colour your leather jacket.
Get the colour mixed up and ready to apply to the jacket.
Clean a section of the leather or match the colour to the inside of the jacket before the colour is removed.
In this case we used the alcohol cleaner to remove the surface colour of the jacket. We used a medium firmness to rub over the surface with the cloth supplied in the DIY leather Repair Kit, this was to remove the clear glazed affect on the surface and some of the surface dye.
Once we were happy with the desired effect and enough colour had been removed from the leather jacket it was ready to have some dye applied to it again to restore the colour fully back to its former glory.
This was done by wiping on the colour initially, thena second coating was applied by stippling actions to make sure this got into the grain structure and into seam areas fully.
We used a hairdryer to dry the leather paint quickly this dries within a few seconds in most cases depending on how think you have applied it.

Great Chanel So Helpful.
Great channel with lots of useful tips. Can you please make a video about refurbishing/cleaning/repainting old vintage shearling/sheepskin jackets? Greetings form Istanbul.
It’s a video we are doing next about colouring one
For a more slightly deeper colour change - could i use shoe polish in a deeper shade? I know it's not permanent but it's only a jacket i wear for occasional use
@@AussieERS we don’t recommend that, we would use the antique restorer creams.
Please do a video on cleaning and dying nubuck jackets.
Greeting and love from Pakistan.🧡
It’s on the agenda to be made early next year
@@LeatherRepairUK sounds great, BTW i have to wait it. I just washed my nubuck right now and couple days before it has badly ruined its shine, nd some other sports appeared too.
Thank you , i will be waiting😊
@@maham5856 what do you mean you washed it ?
I have a dark navy blue recliner, almost black in the shade. I’d like to change the color to a dark espresso. What do you think? Is it possible & is there a best way to go about it? The leather is genuine, like new, excellent condition, just worthless to me in blue. Nothing to lose trying to change it. I love the depth of this jacket. Worried that this blue will sabotage any effort to try to avoid a painted look. Thank you!!
Yes this can be done if you email us we will get you links to products along with help sheets how to do this help@leatherrepaircompany.com
Hello, I want to inquire. I have a black bovine leather jacket. I would like to change its color to dark brown. Can I do this? Does alcohol spoil the leather? Please answer
Hello yes you can change this to brown no problems at all , we have never had any issues with alcohol clean in the 30 plus years of being in business if used correctly, you can buy your kits online www.leatherrepaircompany.com
Do you have to apply a clear finishing coat to this ?
This depends how it’s mixed initially and the affects we are looking for, with this item we moved the colour added some clear coat and applied as an all in one product.
I have light burgundy sheep leather jacket that I want to darken do you have any advice? I only ever restored leather
Can you email us a picture please so we can give you the best advice send to help@leatherrepaircompany.com
Can we use a regular alcohol with water for the first step?
We use a dedicated alcohol cleaner for this process on leather, I don’t want to suggest something we dont endorse incase it causes damage to your item.
Will this also work with colour dye balm ?
A balm is not a dye, a balm is a temporary product
What’s the name of the bottle and color exact
The link to the product share all in the videos bio please take a read and follow the link
Does the dye bleed through to the lining? I recently dyed suede shoes and this happened.
If that happened to your shoes then you have applied far too much suede dye
For 39 years we have been renowned around the world for leather jacket renovations and we don’t get this happening
@@LeatherRepairUKIt was probably down to the brush applicator that was supplied with the dye. I’ll try the sponge method you recommended. Thanks
@@jennyweston-i4p with suede always use a wool dauber we have a video about this I will get you a link

Other then the huge thick UK Accent making it hard to understand! I would like to see the quality of this leather jacket condition now. As, l have been trained never to use alcohol based substances on full grain leather.
Thank you for your feedback
Terribly sorry you find it hard to understand what the guys saying, personally just listened to it and find zero issues here.
I guess each training provider tells things differently, but the leather industry uses alcohol cleaner every day and we have never had an issue in 39 years of doing this.
I guess over the many years of running your business you will have found it useful to have it, in particular when dyeing leather it’s helps a great deal to set dyes.
Australian here - no issues at all understanding the presenters accent
