When I was 17 I wanted to be like Jim, the poetry passion rebelliousness love, I figured I'd probably die young like him too. Living now I've learned I didn't know half as much as I thought I did lol. He lived the soul in the music and felt pain that was in the lyrics and shared it with the world. The American Poet.
I had the bead necklace too. Was all about some Jim. Went away from him for a while and will never have the feeling about him that I did back then (I'm almost 40 now), but still appreciate the music. As someone who made it through their 20s and is now sober from alcohol, I can see through the myth of Jim and realize he was basically a kid (young man) with a severe alcohol problem. It's crazy to hear some of the music and know that he's in his early-mid 20s. When I was 14, he was a grown man being awesome, but now I think about dying at 27 and it seems like life had barely begun by then. I still appreciate the voice, the songs, the risks he took to push the boundaries...but I also feel a lot of sympathy for him.
I thought he was the king of cool, but at the same time, I realized I would not want to be like him (except for SOME of his freeness of spirit.), or even hang out with him. I felt he was best admired from a distance.
@wendy pearson It was nice to read some honest, truthful and wise comments regarding Jimmy's life. His life was sad and tragic indeed, it breaks my heart every time I read anything about him or watch anything with him in it, nothing but sadness. It is nice to see wise people recognizing that his destructive ways were not cool after all, and we all try to be better people and take good care of ourselves while living. I hate when people glamorize and promote drugs, alcohol, prostitution, murder, just about any destruction to the human kind. I wish Jimmy had God's wisdom, then he would have been a solder of Jesus in this ugly, dark world. And, can you imagine how many young souls he would have saved for Jesus. That would have been awesome to witness, and even if he would have died at 27 for being a follower of Jesus, he would have even been a bigger icon even to this day. And, not many young people would have destroyed their lives due to using drugs, alcohol or living promiscuous life thinking that somehow they will reach some enlightenment and discover a new, better life. The world is still suffering as a result of that kind of life. May our Lord bless you all. But, my heart and soul hurt for Jimmy, still.

This is one of my all time favourite songs. Period. Despite the quality of the recording and looseness of the performance, despite no official studio recording, despite there being only 2 known live versions. Despite all that, this is still one of the most hauntingly beautiful songs I’ve ever heard. The melody is solemn yet catchy. The lyrics are deep and prophetic and just like Jim, still a little playful. The outro is so bold and proud. The song has pain and perhaps a little venom even, yet somehow it’s still so wise and hopeful. If I had a time machine I would do everything and anything I could to get these 4 guys into a studio to record this song properly. Having said that, part of the haunting charm of this song is that this is all there is and that’s part of why I love it so much.
