The "Elfenlied" german poem fits perfectly with the overall theme of the anime. An elf believes he's being invited to some sort of wedding due to a light. The villagers are yelling "Elf", so the Elf believed he was invited. The elf wakes up from a state of stupor from his sleep, thinking he was invited. But "eleven" and "elf" in German sound about the same, and the villagers were just calling out the time. The poem is ended with the elf being hit by a rock and "Cuckoo! Cuckoo!". (I don't think it's a coincidence that Lucy's horns protruding from her skull resembles that of an elf's ears) In the first episode, Lucy sees the light (gate opening). Lucy is also depicted as "sleepy" in the first episode when she slaughters the soldiers. When the sniper bullet hits her helmet and leaves her injured and washed up at the beach with a split personality between Lucy and Nyu, I believe that's the "Cuckoo! Cuckoo!" part of the poem. "Lilium" means Lily in Latin, and "eleison" means purity (Lily of purity). Kohta gave the music box titled Lilium to Lucy when he was a child, and throughout the anime she constantly hums the song as a reminder of her "purity". I don't think the Dicolonii in the story were biologically programmed to kill, but Lucy was made to believe that humanity was her enemy (but that was proven by Nana, who I don't think killed anyone). So in that sense, I think Lucy is pure. In some scenes, she showed more humanity than humans themselves. When she was called a monster by the three boys who killed the dog she cared for, she says "the ones who aren't human are you". And in that context, it really makes you question what the definition of being human is. I personally liked the anime because it was minimally based on a short German poem, but the overall theme stands strong. People fear those who are different, and you could argue people are *afraid* of being the different ones. We're essentially taught to be the same people and treat those who are different like trash. As quoted by Lucy, "aren't we all monsters inside?" I also believe that in the song "Blessed be the man who resists temptation... shall receive the crown of life" is a reference to Kohta, since he never gave up on his friendship/love with Lucy despite human nature to alienate those who are different, and hence "crown of life", because Lucy did not kill him.
Thank you a lot for this information, really. I'm Italian and I didn't know that, now I appreciate the story even more. I must say that also your interpretation is great

I do not know if they originate with the creators, or with the many variations on the internet, but looking both at the Latin and the lines from the original Bible and hymn texts, the errors are as following: 'quoniqm': this should be 'quoniam' 'probates': 'probatus' 'accipient': 'accipiet' 'kyerie': 'kyrie' 'benigma': 'benigna' (2x) 'o castitas lilium': 'o castitatis lilium'. These are the errors I encounter online. Sometimes one of the words is corrected (like 'benigna', in this video) but most errors are in the original recording. I suppose that the creators made some mistakes, like copying 'quoniam' as 'quoniqm', because they didn't know the Latin very well, which lead to the singer pronouncing it like 'quonicum'.

This song is the perfect blend of beauty and sorrow, a true tragedy to its very core, almost a requiem. And the fact that the song is in Latin, makes it sound like she's calling out to God
A bit of an old comment but the lyrics of this song are taken from the Latin Vulgate Bible and Catholic hymns. There are a few mistakes in the text and the singer mispronounces some words but this is beautiful nonetheless.
By the spectrum, this song is beautiful. Soooo frikkin pretty. And with tremendous weight behind its lyrics, and their meaning. Gods, i will never tire of this song. The anime is spectacular, as well. If there are ANY people in this comment section who have yet to watch Elfin Lied, you are doing yourself one of the most horrendous disservices that you can.
those who say its bad probably thought it would be an X rated anime upon watching it and decided that was horrible. if you haven't watched it yourself, id highly recommend checking it out for yourself. its rated MA, which usually means its an anime that pushes a few boundaries... but be warned this one pushes them ALL as far as they can.
It's been 7 years since I saw this show and I still remember ever once and a while to revisit the masterpiece of an opening. I really should re-watch the whole thing as I remember the myriad of emotions and thoughts going through my head clear as day, all this time later. There hasn't been a show like this since.
I hated it the first few times and would skip it lol. Eventually of course I started liking it and now about 15 years later it's still on my playlist in my phone and listen to it almost every day. I love that it's such a sad song with glints of hope in it and the singer is incredible.
I first heard this theme as a kid who randomly stumbled upon Elfen Lied and some scenes, and remember when hearing this for the first time it felt haunting and sad. Now that i listen to it again after all these years I find it absolutely beautiful and touching, especially as a religious person.
The music played from 1:30 to 2:16 is definitely a masterpiece expressing anime's events and revealing such harmony especially for the curve before the end of the music 😍😍😍Idk but it sounds classic and I love it
Poor Lucy....... Seriously, when you first see the anime, you think she's just evil. But, once you learn more about her past, you realize that HUMANS are the ones that drove her to kill. They took away the some of her only friends. Aiko, who died saving her life, was one of her best friends. The pup she befriended, killed by her bullies (they deserved that violent death, Lucy. You did good) are both gone. After a while, she just becomes the misunderstood protagonist. Lilium will always be a haunting song, from a great series.
I've just rewatched Elfen Lied and this song is just an epic masterpiece. It gives me chills and break my heart in pieces. When Lilium plays at the end of the last episode I shed a tear. This little melody, when they meet as children, it's so powerful. I watched this Anime when I was a bit too young and couldn't see what my adult eyes have seen this time. Now, despite the violence of every kind, I see the real depths of what this Anime tells us. I'm so heartbroken but admirative. "Elfen Lied" deserves its recognition and fame. I love it very much. Every character is amazingly well built (except Yuka i'm sorry her actings are bad in my opinion, i don't think her ways and her behavior toward Kota is rentable.) Lucy (or Nyu) of course, Nana, Mayu, Kota, even Kurama have real motivations, real depths and reasons. The virus of the Disclonius make them act this way an I even find Mariko acts justified. Don't get me wrong, okay she is sadistic but so was Lucy as a little child after realizing how human hated her. But Mariko was just a baby who got locked in a dark room with her demons. No wonder she became crazy. The story totally justify her actings and I really love Mariko story. In short - I totally recommand this Anime. Just make sure your heart is well prepared and warned, not only for the physic violence, but also for all the psychology around this powerful story!
@@daesiel2569 Comparing both, Lucy had a "better" start after escaping the laboratory than Nana had. Lucy somehow managed to find Kotha/Kohta and his, girlfriend at this time I think. But I don't know how Nana got to this guy shown in her flashbacks. It's also unknown, at least to me, how they weren't afraid of Nana going berserk just as Lucy did, taking revenge on her torturers, except for the poor, clumsy secretary... ;(
I watched this when i was 8 years old! THE WHOLE ANIME. Still dont know how I LIKED the GORE and LIKED the plot and stuff and how i didnt get NIGHTMARES
Lol I've watched it when I was 9 I am used to seeing stuff in Elfen Lied ( by catching my brothers watching gore, and stuff that would give normal kids nightmares)
It's probably the titties. But honestly I didn't get turned on by the titties cuz I don't like 2d bitches and honestly it adds something to the show that just makes it so good
10? Lmao I’m not sure about this. I’m 20 now and I watched this anime when I was like 11 or 12, absolutely loved it but dunno if it was appropriate for me to watch 😂 The scenes when Lucy goes ape shit after seeing those kids torture a dog was pretty scary to see as a kid
Incredible how it still sounds as beautiful as it did when I listened to this as a child of 13. There's so many things from my childhood that incredibly still stand the test of time after all these years. That is how you determine a masterpiece. Now the anime itself is.. not as great, but also not as bad. Like a lot of shows, it could have been so much _more_
Elfen Lied was my first anime, so I'll always have a nostalgic love for it, but damn is it hard to go back and watch, especially now as I see it nothing more than torture porn, which is not my favorite genre... Regardless of that, Lilium will remain my number one favorite theme
omg yess, this was my first anime too before I got fully into anime. Whenever I come across a sad anime like akame ga kill, my mind will always automatically compare the anime to elfenlied, reminding me that no anime is sadder than ElfenLied.

I don't know why this man said that , it's not porn ( but yes it has nudity but that doesn't mean it is porn it's just that the story demands it , you'll understand if you watch it ) it's a tragic anime and the manga is even more depressing , mostly blood and gore . I just finished the anime today. Started it about a day ago, I heard this song on Twitter and ended up here and decided to watch it on a whim. I heard of the show before, but I didn't know what I was getting myself into. This song and the intro just brings up a bottomless sorrow out of me, I'm not sure if I should even be this sad. My life hasn't been horrible. But I just can't turn the song off.
I remember binge watching this the summer after 8th grade in one whole sitting. I cried at the end and this will remain one of my favorite anime’s of all time
OMG this put my 2month old to sleep every time and she gets really mad if I just up and stop the song lol thank you so much for this vid thanks for helping a father out lol
As a death metal fan, I love this, and no other song has made me feel this way. I first watched the anime 9 years ago when I was about 10 and came back to it recently because for some reason after all this time I had a thought about it. Wish I could find more music like this
i love to come back to this song whenever i remember it, which is every few years and i'm always amazed by it! probably one of the best anime intros ever!

This, together with Caesar's theme - Il mare eterno nella mia anima (from Jojo) are the most beautiful songs in anime. And I appreciate that in Psycho-pass, Ode to joy is used as Makishima's theme.
this is such a masterpiece... i still can't wrap my head around it, even after 19 years since i heard this song for the first time as a singer i still try to find a way to figure out a lower polyphone melody, but i haven't found a harmonious form still working on it
Os iusti meditabitur sapientiam Et lingua eius loquetur indicium Beautus vir qui suffert tentationem Quoniqm cum probates fuerit accipient coronam vitae Kyrie, ignis, divine,eleison... O quam sancta Quam serena Quam benigna Quam amoena O castitas Lilium! "A beautiful melody played in the mind of the killer, seen in the eyes of the victim."
Am i the only one who sees a perfect hymn for Earth in this? i mean yeah its from a show but the lyrics just reflect human nature and our history and beliefs so beautifully. "O how sacred, how serene, how benevolent, O lily of purity!" The Lily in itself reflects Earth, and "Lord, fire divine, have mercy" reflects how she is plagued by war, disease and famine all throughout her history, now united in our modern world to the sound of this beautiful song. On top of that interpretation, it's just a hauntingly beautiful piece from a great show
well, you can interpret it that way but the actual meaning is referring to Virgin Mary and The Lord. it is taken from Psalms, Epistle of James, and Ave Mundi Spes Maria.
Lord fire divine is the hebrew God, the true God of the universe. The builder of everything. Here we go again with pagan ideas, it just another view thru the eyes of the unbelievers
It is still one of my favorite op EVER i Even if you dont understand, even if you dont know what happened in anime this song is explaining everything perfect.
The only anime or show/movie in general that ever made me cry, probably because I could relate to the feeling of alienation and not being understood at all since I can think. the ending really fcked me up too. Gotta watch this again 13 years later to see if it still hits as hard as a kid and if lucy still looks so badass. What a shame we never got a season 2 or remake ... The anime is 20 years old now, almost as old as myself
The only thing I hate about the anime is the shit ending. (by shit I mean how you just see Lucy/Nyuu at the door at thats it.) Everything else was very good. I dont mind the nudity because it was not sexual stuff. And the gore is also OK. I really liked the story.(I think "Elfen Lied: The Passing Rain" was a tease.)
The thing is that it's not lucy because in her fight against Mariko she lost one of her horns and earlier in the show they said if a diclloinoius (sorry I butchered the name) loses both of their horns they dead so in the final episode when lucy goes of to fight the military she loses her other horn. If you don't believe me re-watch the series and you'll see that I'm right.
this is a masterpiece. i can't believe it was made for an anime. while this anime is great, this music is on another level of perfection that can't even be described
One of those animes where after finishing it, you just can't but reflect about life. I have listened to this song for about 15 years now and cannot find any other that I could hold near and dear to my heart.
halfway 2022 and i still want to listen to this once in a while. this anime isn't the sad tear jerker anime, but the sad "how did this happen?" anime. the tragedy knowing you could only bear and grit your teeth miserably leaving you with melancholic experience then moving on

The "Elfenlied" german poem fits perfectly with the overall theme of the anime. An elf believes he's being invited to some sort of wedding due to a light. The crown of life refers to lucys restraint when meeting kouta

I fear this show is pretty much done man... as far as I remember in Japan the BD only sold 4,000 copies
The manga has a pseudo-happy ending. While the anime would be a plot where Kouta and Lucy would have a relationship (since they both kissed)
It's not worth it, since the manga only has 107 chapters, I mean the anime adaptation is pretty off compared to manga.

those who say its bad probably thought it would be an X rated anime upon watching it and decided that was horrible. if you haven't watched it yourself, id highly recommend checking it out for yourself. its rated MA, which usually means its an anime that pushes a few boundaries... but be warned this one pushes them ALL as far as they can.
rikumeansearth A sloppily put together show that relies on gore and nudity to maintain interest. But people like it, and good on you if you like it 💕
+Meishiru I sense an imminent bond!
+Meishiru Lol, yeah it's a fantastic anime, albeit rather depressing. Still up there with one of my favourites in terms of animation and storytelling!
This is really calming compared to what the Anime is about
preparing you mentally to confront what you will watch self balance
It's the calm before the storm
It's been 7 years since I saw this show and I still remember ever once and a while to revisit the masterpiece of an opening. I really should re-watch the whole thing as I remember the myriad of emotions and thoughts going through my head clear as day, all this time later. There hasn't been a show like this since.
nothing will ever beat the feeling of listening to it for the first time
Yep
I hated it the first few times and would skip it lol.
Eventually of course I started liking it and now about 15 years later it's still on my playlist in my phone and listen to it almost every day.
I love that it's such a sad song with glints of hope in it and the singer is incredible.
I first heard this theme as a kid who randomly stumbled upon Elfen Lied and some scenes, and remember when hearing this for the first time it felt haunting and sad. Now that i listen to it again after all these years I find it absolutely beautiful and touching, especially as a religious person.
Listen to Chesnokov's We Praise Thee. That is the song I currently wish I could hear for the first time again.
@djunojung Thank you for the recommendation!
The music played from 1:30 to 2:16 is definitely a masterpiece expressing anime's events and revealing such harmony especially for the curve before the end of the music 😍😍😍Idk but it sounds classic and I love it
Makes me cry every time I hear it ❤️
Anyone in 2024?
Yep
Once every year I give it a listen 🙏

Hello here
Mẹ.😊😊
Poor Lucy.......
Seriously, when you first see the anime, you think she's just evil. But, once you learn more about her past, you realize that HUMANS are the ones that drove her to kill. They took away the some of her only friends. Aiko, who died saving her life, was one of her best friends. The pup she befriended, killed by her bullies (they deserved that violent death, Lucy. You did good) are both gone. After a while, she just becomes the misunderstood protagonist. Lilium will always be a haunting song, from a great series.
It rather strongly reminded me of Frankenstein actually.
I cry everytime I here this song
10 years later after watching this, the opening still lives in my head rent free. JEEZ does it give me such creepy CHILLS.
Read the manga bro.. let it pain you once again,,
I'm just speechless. This Is a huge bomb of emotions
The best part part of the song is 1:27. Its even better when its on surround speakers. ^-^
Oni Giri i listened to this with my Beats solo 2. I swear to god I came in my pants at that point
Elfen lied is a masterpiece, its a shame most people can't get past the gore and nudity
Totally agree man. I'm just glad Nana made it. That was almost all I cared about
It's all good brothers and sisters use your magic and heal now
True. I've been interested in watching it for ages, but I just can't handle gore unfortunately
@@daesiel2569
Comparing both, Lucy had a "better" start after escaping the laboratory than Nana had.
Lucy somehow managed to find Kotha/Kohta and his, girlfriend at this time I think. But I don't know how Nana got to this guy shown in her flashbacks.
It's also unknown, at least to me, how they weren't afraid of Nana going berserk just as Lucy did, taking revenge on her torturers, except for the poor, clumsy secretary... ;(
I was around 10-11 yo when I first watching this. Love the story, the tragedy. My mind goes blank for the whole day like. Wtf I am just watching...
I legit almost burst into tears when listening to the first “Kyrie, Ignis Divine, Eleison”. Not sad tears, it’s just so beautiful
I watched this when i was 8 years old! THE WHOLE ANIME. Still dont know how I LIKED the GORE and LIKED the plot and stuff and how i didnt get NIGHTMARES
Chari Chan+ Sameness
Lol I've watched it when I was 9
I am used to seeing stuff in Elfen Lied
( by catching my brothers watching gore, and stuff that would give normal kids nightmares)
It's probably the titties. But honestly I didn't get turned on by the titties cuz I don't like 2d bitches and honestly it adds something to the show that just makes it so good
Shit! Fucking accurate!
because its not gory. just plain sad and tearjerking
This anime is just amazing. A definite 10 for older audiences and people who can appreciate something like this.
rodsaids Hiboi a 10? seriously?
No, it's a 5 max. Even the gore is poorly done
10? Lmao I’m not sure about this. I’m 20 now and I watched this anime when I was like 11 or 12, absolutely loved it but dunno if it was appropriate for me to watch 😂
The scenes when Lucy goes ape shit after seeing those kids torture a dog was pretty scary to see as a kid
@@Z0Z33KY 10 as in score, not age
@@marcelocoto3245 bruh it was 2004 and who cares the gore isn’t the point it’s just a unique part of the anime. The main focus is the plot.
Thanks youtube recommendations to make me cry another time...
Réginald Demeuse lol I’m also crying after watching elfen lied for a 7th time
Incredible how it still sounds as beautiful as it did when I listened to this as a child of 13. There's so many things from my childhood that incredibly still stand the test of time after all these years. That is how you determine a masterpiece.
Now the anime itself is.. not as great, but also not as bad. Like a lot of shows, it could have been so much _more_
Still watching this in 2019, this song is beautiful and should always be remembered, along with the anime.
Elfen Lied was my first anime, so I'll always have a nostalgic love for it, but damn is it hard to go back and watch, especially now as I see it nothing more than torture porn, which is not my favorite genre... Regardless of that, Lilium will remain my number one favorite theme
aurielMoon Tokyo ghoul was my first and this was second
omg yess, this was my first anime too before I got fully into anime. Whenever I come across a sad anime like akame ga kill, my mind will always automatically compare the anime to elfenlied, reminding me that no anime is sadder than ElfenLied.
aurielMoon yeah, back when I was 10...
@@makaalbarn7258 hell no ! I don't know why this man said that , it's not porn ( but yes it has nudity but that doesn't mean it is porn it's just that the story demands it , you'll understand if you watch it ) it's a tragic anime and the manga is even more depressing , mostly blood and gore . Feel free to give it a try it's damn good .
It’s not torture porn because of nudity. It’s torture porn because the creator seems to get off on torturing his poor characters excessively. ☹️
Very beautiful melody. Still love it even after 13 years. I remember watching the anime as a kid, nostalgic..
Funnily enough same, it was only when I rewatched it 5 years after I was like, huh, this has a lot of blood, gore, and nudity
I just started watching it like a week ago and i finished it didn't know it was so old until like ep 12
jesus this is the exact video i watched over 6 years ago what the hell i was 11 then
omg
Me too dude

I watched this anime 6 or 7 years ago. My best anime, ever. On par with FMA:B.

One of the most beautiful songs I've heard in a long time.. Love the voice of the woman singing.. She puts me at ease.
Finished the manga yesterday. Damn
Lol I watched both the anime and manga in my teens shit made depressed af😂
@@FusionComet that shit give kouta trauma.. No! I think it give us trauma..
@FusionComet tue manga is a MASTERPIECE the anime is decent itself but failed to really flush out the characters.

still EPIC like the first time
As a death metal fan, I love this, and no other song has made me feel this way. I first watched the anime 9 years ago when I was about 10 and came back to it recently because for some reason after all this time I had a thought about it.
Wish I could find more music like this
ohhhhh man that's a madness
That sounds like what i did. I only knew about some of the gore but I wanted to know the story. I love this song
You can try to search opera, german opera might be more fitting as well
i love to come back to this song whenever i remember it, which is every few years and i'm always amazed by it! probably one of the best anime intros ever!
0:01 the bell ringing you hear is the bell of wall clock that lucy fixed in the end of anime
This song deserves to be remembered through human history, and archieved as a worldwide treasure.
I just want to know if the uploader is still alive... Please like the comment original chanel... I am surprised that this video has so few likes and views... So Beautiful
So beautiful, so sad.
I used to sing this to my nephew when he was a baby to calm him down and help him sleep.
This, and the hymn of the fayth from FFX
This, together with Caesar's theme - Il mare eterno nella mia anima (from Jojo) are the most beautiful songs in anime. And I appreciate that in Psycho-pass, Ode to joy is used as Makishima's theme.
очень трогательная песня, прям завораживает
Эта песня играла на протяжении 2х месяцев моей голове, наконец я нашла ее
Fucking same
this is such a masterpiece... i still can't wrap my head around it, even after 19 years since i heard this song for the first time
as a singer i still try to find a way to figure out a lower polyphone melody, but i haven't found a harmonious form
still working on it
At 0:43 it Sounds like she is saying "Your Body's sweaty touch it Oh No Now we die"😂😂😂😂
Pfft I can't unhear that now 😂
Oh my. That’s all I can hear now 😂
I hate you. Now its in my head
Or...
Your butt is funny, touch it, oh no we all die

I used to watch really bloody anime’s when I was younger this was my favorite and it still is
"Blessed the man who resists temptation. Since he, with striving, shall recieve the crown of life"
If anyone's watched the anime, I'd highly advise reading the manga. It's much longer and there's a better / alternate ending
Manga's ending is better? I didn't read that but i saw a seen that kuta kills lucy himself is that right?
It sounds so divine from start to finish. Best op. ever. No need to say anything more
Am i the only one who sees a perfect hymn for Earth in this? i mean yeah its from a show but the lyrics just reflect human nature and our history and beliefs so beautifully.
"O how sacred, how serene, how benevolent, O lily of purity!"
The Lily in itself reflects Earth, and "Lord, fire divine, have mercy" reflects how she is plagued by war, disease and famine all throughout her history, now united in our modern world to the sound of this beautiful song.
On top of that interpretation, it's just a hauntingly beautiful piece from a great show
The song is so eryly angelic . Like it sounds so deep and emotional.
I dont know how to describe it
well, you can interpret it that way but the actual meaning is referring to Virgin Mary and The Lord. it is taken from Psalms, Epistle of James, and Ave Mundi Spes Maria.
These lyrics are mostly biblical and their spiritual meaning is deep
Lord fire divine is the hebrew God, the true God of the universe. The builder of everything. Here we go again with pagan ideas, it just another view thru the eyes of the unbelievers
Sang this in a chorus concert once in high school and I was the lead singer and soloist I love his song so much
This is possibly the most beautiful song ever, brings me to tears every time I hear it.
Say whatever you want, but especially 1:30 gives me shivers
Gay
It is still one of my favorite op EVER i
Even if you dont understand, even if you dont know what happened in anime this song is explaining everything perfect.
2021 and i still love this masterpiece!!
The greatest opening that has ever blessed my ears.
Well the manga is even worse because the incest is mainly it so just stay with the anime
You could call it nudity but in my Opinion it represents the innocent Part of Lucy/Nyu
this is a masterpiece. i can't believe it was made for an anime. while this anime is great, this music is on another level of perfection that can't even be described
Blessed is the man who endures temptation.
One of those animes where after finishing it, you just can't but reflect about life. I have listened to this song for about 15 years now and cannot find any other that I could hold near and dear to my heart.
after all these years this never gets old
still one of the greatest pieces of music I've had the chance to listen to
this is the most 2009 video to ever 2009 but i live for it still
This song always bring tears to my eyes. Such a good anime.
halfway 2022 and i still want to listen to this once in a while.
this anime isn't the sad tear jerker anime, but the sad "how did this happen?" anime. the tragedy knowing you could only bear and grit your teeth miserably leaving you with melancholic experience then moving on
