Michael Jordan 2003: 40yrs & 30pts vs. Dirk's Mavericks

  • At Hoopsencyclopedia, there is no lockout. So the march goes on. To honor this year's champs, here's Yoda Mike taking it to future legend and 2011 Champion Dirk and his Dallas Mavericks with Nash, Finley and Bell at his side. Just days after shattering the record at age 40 with 43pts, MJ followed it up here with 30pts while being the best player on both ends of the floor. You can marvel at all his wise and cunning midrange shots all you want. But my favorite moment in this game is the look on MJ's face when the game-winner doesn't go down. He gets off the perfect shot and is absolutely perplexed that it didn't hit. And you are too. That's fine, give me 5 more minutes of MJ win or lose any day.

  • @jordanlover23
    @jordanlover23 13 лет назад +3

    @jordanlover23 Another example is at 4:09, where he uses the small, lateral hopstep to slice into the lane between defenders and set up the layup. Jordan was able to jump in any direction off of any type of hopstep, and this is what made him lethal (not only the ABILITY to do so, which I'm sure more players have, but also the RECOGNITION of how and when to use the hop step and other moves - the GOAT).

  • @MagicalHorton
    @MagicalHorton 11 лет назад +8

    Jordan is a physical miss match. he might be the strongest 2 who ever played. I don't think there is any wingspan data on Jordan but he looked to be pretty long armed out there as well. If you combined this supposed length with the aforementioned strength, and add in his speed, Jordan had as many physical advantages as any shooting guard, ever. The fact that he was a savant -skill wise- only added to the great talent he already had. Jordan could have been a great point man, or 3. Even a 4.

  • @jordanlover23
    @jordanlover23 13 лет назад +2

    Jordan used the hop step better than anyone else in history - he could take large and small hop steps, take them forwards, sideways, and backwards, angle himself in any direction, use them to launch into layups/dunks or to get to open spots for his jumper. Perfect examples here at 2:54 and 5:08 where he splits attempted traps/swipes to get to an opening for his J. Brilliant player, and easily the best hop-step player in history.

    I went to this game, grew up during the Jordan era and to be able to see him live was a treat. Living in Va never thought would ever get to see him play live, so when he suited up for Washington i knew i was going to a game and this is the one i ended up at. What a game it was, the last 5 min had everyone on there feet... And if he would of hit that game winner at the end of the 4th....the F N roof would of blew off that place. No way anyone that watched basketball during his time could ever say James or Bryant are better. 6 for 6 with 6 MVP Finals . SMFH

    I never watched MJ when he played for the Wizards. I didn't want to see him without his full abilities, but as this and other videos show, he was still pretty effective.

  • @jordanlover23
    @jordanlover23 13 лет назад +2

    Walton says early in this game and again later that Jordan as a Bull was the best rebounder in the league. While thats hyperbole, Jordan's rebounding is SEVERELY overlooked. He's one of the 5 best guard rebounders of all time; he's snatched countless rebounds in traffic to save games. Athlon Sports in 1997 did a poll of coaches/analysts/writers asking who they would take if they needed 1 rebound to win a game and MJ was 3rd, behind Wilt and Barkley and ahead of several other all-time big men.

  • @jordanlover23
    @jordanlover23 13 лет назад +1

    Look where MJ comes from at 6:55 to block that big shot attempt by Van Exel. Jordan isn't even in the play, and is actually trying to read how his man will play those weak-side screens, and then instantly recognizes that Van Exel has a lane and comes over in a flash, covering a ton of ground, to block the shot. MJ is the clutchest perimeter defender in history, and top 3 overall.

  • @TrueSephiros

    People forget, or just simply don't know. During MJ's prime, they PLAYED Zone Def, the only difference was, they DISGUISED it so that you wouldn't get a call, look at Jordan Rules, 92 Knicks def. again. MJ in his prime during this era wouldn't of wrecked the league like he did in the 80's and 90's, he would've DESTROYED the league within this era.
    There's a reason why Magic, Cousy, West, Bird, Barkley, Ewing, Malone, Stockton, The Admiral, etc, etc all state MJ is still the Greatest.

    Dirk Nowitzki any day of the week. Close to 25/10 for like 7 seasons and 23/8.5 for career. Won an MVP, got out of the first round as a leader of his team, led his team and won a championship. Maybe hypothetically speaking Grant Hill WOULD'VE been better, but in reality DIRK is better, and has had a better career. Still better to this day too

  • @rayj161
    @rayj161 13 лет назад

    He was the shit as a Wizard. I can't believe some people critics him for coming back. Just because he didn't win a championship? That's a teams job. His teammates SUCK bigtime too! He is 40, and nobody can even guard him.

  • @blackadam06

    @KnightOnE5Square
    "He sent a team with Desagana Diop as its starting center to the fucking NBA Finals!"
    And?!!
    Lebron sent a team to the finals with Big Z as the center.
    What's your point?
    Just like with Dirk, the same can be said of LBJ: what was he until he got some LEGIT help around him?
    I rest my case!
    We're not talkin' about the success of the team. We're assessing them INDIVIDUALLY!

  • @KnightOnE5Square
    @KnightOnE5Square 11 лет назад

    I rest my case too, bc I just realised you are talking about tennis.A player's individual success is evaluated as well on his teams success and how he can make a group of role players successful.Something Dirk and LBJ have done, while G.Hill fails miserably in this comparison.

    Petrovic shoot the ball great for 2 seasons, but still he doesn't belong is the 50-40-90 club where elite shooters belong: check out wikipedia - 50-40-90 club
    In his best season he averaged 22,3 pts 3,5 ast, and 2,7 reb with 38 mins per game is a far cry from being considered the best european ever.
    He hardly belongs in the top 10.Anyway he deserves immense respect for being the first european to make a name for himself in the NBA.

    Ok,let's take in consideration their first 5 years in the league where Grant missed only a handful of games.
    In his 5th year, Dirk made the WCF, while LBJ in his 4th year made the Finals.
    Grant Hill...not so much!
    In whatever way you want to turn this case on your convenience, you still lose.
    I'm gonna go as far as saying that staying healthy is part of a player's greatness and his work ethic.

    Dirk is someone who is head and shoulders better than Grant Hill. The fact that you even mentioned Grant Hill kills this conversation for me. Not to mention Dirk hadn't even his his peak this year. Dirk of the last 3 years would average 28 points a game on the 90's Bulls. I'm in no way saying Dirk is better than MJ but no man on this planet can "shut down" Dirk as you say...

    30 points in 26 shots with 6 TO isn't impressive at all.Stackhouse was the top performer for Wizards in this game with 30pts,7reb,6 ast,2 stl,1blk. MJ is greatest and everything but let's not get carried away by posting ordinary games.

  • @AAmast3r

    Scottie Pippen was Dirk's favorite player growing up. Just sayin... But Cmon man, no disrespect to him, he couldn't stop Dirk. Marion, Artest, Duncan, Bowen all the great defenders of this time have tried and failed. I think anyone who watches basketball would acknowledge that. They say when Dirk shoots, you gotta just hope he misses... Not to mention he's a much better free throw shooter than Malone. So any fouls and its an automatic 2 pts.

    I lost nothing. Like I said we likely have no credible standing reach or wingspan data on Jordan, who is 6'4" or 6'5"(see Olympic measurements. Lebron is 6'7". Conceivably Jordan could have nearly as good, as good, or better of a reach than Lebron, who himself has a pretty strong wingspan and standing reach. What 2 had a footspeed advantage on Jordan? That is a joke. Iverson did, but he was/is 5'11" first thing int he morning. There were/are very few 6'4" guys who can move like Jordan.

I'm not hating on anyone just stating that Dirk will obviously go in history as the better player.Hill had 5 healthy years in NBA and he couldn't elevate his team to anything significant.Can't argue against success.What Hill a great player? Yes, he was.Was Hill better than Dirk? Fuck no! He has nothing to back it up.
    Petrovic was a great shooter but certainly not the best and the game isn't just about shooting.His game had many flaws.
