Thank you... I love you guys and this song and I'm starting to find other great songs by you guys.I'm an American who was a teenager when I first saw this video on MTV. I'm 53 and still loving the song today you guys are awesome❤❤❤❤❤❤
Totally the same experience as you, except I’m a guy and my 16 year old brain at the time used to ask how could such an ugly lead singer get such a beautiful British babe? With that said, the clothes, hair, and style of the beautiful women are classic examples of the second British Invasion that occurred in the 1980s, especially the early part of that decade. By the way, how does such an ugly guy get such a beautiful woman? 😂
Re-discovering this song has been a tremendous help for me too right now. Being the music addict that I am, I needed a song to just lift me above and beyond my problems. Believe it or not, I actually prayed for God to send me something....and he sent me a "Working Girl." LOL.
Haven't seen this video since 1983. I contacted one of the guys who uploads vintage MTV broadcasts and asked him if he remembered a video from a new wave band where, at the very end of the video, the whole band was in a swimming pool grabbing onto a inflatable raft. He knew the exact video I was referring to and directed me here.
BettinaBalser It's a great tune because the chorus is great, AND the rest of the song delivers as well: Hooky "OOO-oooo" bit, cool and quiet almost-spoken verse, nice build to the chorus, an equally awesome bridge which goes in a new direction melodically and harmonically, and, very importantly, a very simple but effective lyrical idea. Great chorus, but what elevates it from great to classic is the way everything effectively comes together.
I remember this was played on m. TV back in the 80s, heavy heavy rotation. Whenever I went to work or came home from school. This video was always on LOL gosh. Bring me back memories. I don't know if they made any other songs except for this one
“Once in a lifetime chance, must be heaven sent”....only heard this song during the MTV glory days, not once on the radio... many bands are in this category, back when MTV was only music videos, 24/7...
Same, I never heard it one time on the radio, but just heard it on XM 1st was a few minutes ago, and never heard it on there before either. Early days of MTV I love the video!
As for "on the radio", that depends on where you lived. I lived on Long Island, and this song was definitely on the radio - WLIR (later as WDRE) which was the New Wave station. In Los Angeles, the corresponding New Wave station was KROQ. On SiriusXM 33 "First Wave" many of the DJs on that channel were either DJs at WLIR/DRE or KROQ.
I saw the Members open for the Buzzcocks at the Roundhouse in London in October 2016 and they introduced this as "their American hit" which was true because it was the only song I knew. Awesome!
This song and video are so underrated..these guys are hilarious.."she don't allow much but I tell you she's a ticket to the easy life for me"..love this stuff! Give me Rock the Casbah and Brass in Pocket too.
I love this song. For those of you who don't know, JC Carroll - lead singer of The Members - is doing a weekly acoustic session from his house, every Saturday, 10pm BST. Free but donations encouraged. Spirit of 77, people.
UPDATE: 4 days later. Cannot stop listening to song or watching video. Please send help. Or better yet....don't. I want to stay in this joy forever. Thank you Members.
1981. I eventually brought the single vinyl 45, from Zig Zag Records in Franklin Square NY, when Eric Williams (from the band The Dancing Hoods) worked there.
Been addicted to this song since the first time I heard it on the Classic MTV Class of '83 compilation I got for Christmas 1993 -- on CD, as well as a CD boombox, my first album on CD and first CD player. That boombox finally bit the dust in 2007 after its second move but I still have the compilation and I still love this song. Also, I'm a working girl in search of a working boy.
MV3 in Los Angeles always played this video back in early 80s. . With KROQ DJ Richard Blade.. I never once saw it on MTV... Great memories. . Theres so much stuff that I remember. . Glad I kept my vinyl records. .
My friends and I are 58 and we discovered this most entertaining song when it first appeared on MTV. Needless to say some of us often text the song back and forth because it's so entertaining. Working girl, lazy dude made good.
Fun song. Catchy chorus. Very upbeat. It's a wonder that this song isn't as least as well known "Turning Japanese" or "It's the One Thing", for example.
To the one that said you need joy.i as well.life pretty much sucks nowadays.but thank the stars we have this awesome music to pull us through.take care.
This song and video reminds me of a friend of mine when we were in our early 20's , when this video hit MTV, he would always brag how he "didn't have to wake up until next Friday" when the rest of us had to go to work on Monday, and he would always drop the comment that this video and song was his theme song, he never had a real job, yet always got the hot girl, never paid for anything, had lots of girls, and the rest of us would just shake our heads in confusion, obviously it had everything to do with the fact he was good looking, and at that age girls aren't really thinking about future earning potential, now flash forward 35 years, completely different story, he is what most women would call a complete loser, 58 years old, no savings, no sign of any retirement income, barely any social security at all, (he says at 65 he will get $637 a month) lives in a 1 bedroom apartment (that is subsidized by a government agency) and is constantly ringing up friends "for help" ....there should be a part 2 of this video where the guy who "loved the working girl" can't even afford to buy a "working girl" 👯😂
I completely forgot about this song and then it came on the First Wave channel on my Sirius Satellite Radio, and I knew the lyrics…I then looked up the video on RUclips, and had a flashback memories from when I was 16 years old and thought the dark haired girl was the most beautiful woman I ever had seen…and the guy was so ugly (I was jealous). The clothing and hair styles are emblematic of New Wave music at the time, and the British ladies in their 80s style still look beautiful to me.
I use to play this song for my sister when she'd go out with one of the schlubs she dated. all of them were like this guy, they ALWAYS dumped her before any gift giving occasion. after she gave them their gift first of course!
It's been a couple decades since I seen this video but I remember this awesome song! When MTV played videos (descent VIDEOS) and things were a bit simpler.
This song is an 80's classic and it is truly a working woman's anthem. I work in the medical profession as a part time administrative assistant/patient services representative and I am very lucky to have been employed for 24 years and also very lucky to have a wonderful longtime significant other who takes care of me and supports me as well. This song really makes my day. Thank you for posting this song.
I haven't seen this in years. Instant MTV memories from winter of 83. Incidentally, the "working girl" in the video is Emma Jacobs. She co-starred in the cult trashy camp classic "The Stud" (1978) a starring vehicle for Ms. Joan (pre-dynasty) Collins based on a book written by her sister Jackie Collins.
Michael!l I hang My Head in deepest shame!!!! I should have known that ! But I take solace that I was corrected by a fellow New Yorker !😇 Happy Holidays to you and thank you for putting me straight . I just might watch Joan in that delightfully trashy film ' The Stud ' Or the 'The Bitch' How did that not won the Oscar LOL
I forgot this song existed. I heard it on XM 1st wave off in the distance and instantly remembered from pre MTV or early MTV 38-39 years ago! Great song, the video makes it much better!
LOVE THIS BAND!!!! BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE, AND THE VID REALLY SHOWS THE WAY LONDON WAS IN THE EARLY EIGHTIES... GOTTA SAY THE MEMBERS DID IT BETTER AS OPPOSED TO INXS WITH THEIR ’THE ONE THING’ VID-EVERYONE IS HOTTER!!
Rip Nick Tesco. He was perfect for this video. He looks like a partying slacker in this vid. lol 😂. Thanks for this gem brother. Would of been great to meet him
We all had a great time making this video
We had great time watching it thanks!!!!!
*How were you involved?* 😊
It was impactful to a young teen!
Listening to this great song in March 2024.
THIS IS WHEN MTV WAS IN ITS PRIME!
IM GLAD I WAS AROUND THEM YEARS
THE GOLDEN ERA OF MUSIC VIDEOS
Thank you... I love you guys and this song and I'm starting to find other great songs by you guys.I'm an American who was a teenager when I first saw this video on MTV. I'm 53 and still loving the song today you guys are awesome❤❤❤❤❤❤
Same!
RIP Nicky Tesco, what a wonderful performer he was.
I used to wait for this to play on MTV. Very clever, funny and one of the most fun songs ever to sing along with!
The lyrics are epic and real.
Totally the same experience as you, except I’m a guy and my 16 year old brain at the time used to ask how could such an ugly lead singer get such a beautiful British babe? An anthem if ever there was one.
This song is full of joy, and that's something I really need these days.
Re-discovering this song has been a tremendous help for me too right now. Being the music addict that I am, I needed a song to just lift me above and beyond my problems. Believe it or not, I actually prayed for God to send me something....and he sent me a "Working Girl." LOL.
My yearning for classic MTV brought me here. Haven't heard this in 30 years. Cheers!
The best days of MTV! discovered many brilliant British bands from videos
MTV FLASHBACK VIDCHECK February 25 1984 ( badly edited here )
Guilty pleasure! I hadn't heard it in at least 25 years. I needed a good laugh.
Me? 36 years since 1984. Posted Dec24,2020. The Wuhan Virus. ! From CHINA. Global pandemic !!one for the books
This is arguably one of the best video's from the 80's. Just a fun video with such catchy hooks. RIP Nicky.

Dude, that's awesome! Great to know that great minds think alike!!!
Diving into a pool with clothes on while partying was definitely an “80s” thing.
Prime time for the 80’s 😅
Possibly the most infectious chorus ever in a song.
BettinaBalser yeah i agree

Yep. Memory of it spontaneously popped into my noggin - and I just had to hear it.
Me too, tonight.
Absolutely 💯
great example of why early 80's music is the best era ever in music!!!
Such fun times. I truly miss the 80's. So glad I grew up in that era
Wow man 80’s mtv days I’ll never forget! Mind blown. 😂
The band had a sense of humor and fun. Great song. Not taking themselves too seriously.
I remember this was played on m. TV back in the 80s, heavy heavy rotation. Whenever I went to work or came home from school. This video was always on LOL gosh. Bring me back memories. I don't know if they made any other songs except for this one
British 80s music will always be my jam.

I just hear the very sad news. I met Nick once in the early 80s in LA. Very nice man. Very sorry to hear this. Thank you Nick.
looks and sounds every bit as great as it did when you watched it on mtv all those years ago. makes me feel young again....sigh
When MTV cared about music
Totally remember this from my youth, a blast from the past. Too bad great music like this isn’t written any more!
Hasn't even been a year but I can't get over Nicky's passing..
Nick Lightowlers 1955 - February 26, 2022

My husband would sing this song to me,at the restaurant we owned.
I bought this on Square red vinyl, and still have it, great to hear it again.
I worked stage for this group at a concert here in Indy in the 1980s They were really great live.
Do tell! They seem like a great bunch of guys.
God, does this take me way back! Phenomenal

It has been playing in my mind for the past month so I had to come back and get refreshed again. Such an awesome song and video!

Very sorry to hear about Nicky :( Love the song and video from the good old days.
I remember this video on MTV in the early 80's. I can't believe it wasn't a hit!
Fun song. Catchy chorus. Very upbeat.
It's a wonder that this song isn't as least as well known "Turning Japanese" or "It's the One Thing", for example.
Actually fantastic vocals
1983: home from school and switched on MV3!

I loved MV3. You must live in SoCal too!
infectious bassline

The 80s were so freaking much fun.

1982: I'm in Love With a Working Girl = Funny.
2015: I'm in Love With a Working Girl = Chauvinistic and sued for damages by "The Crystals" estate.
I was only a toddler when this came out, but I heard a little bit of it on a video of old MTV and had to check it out. Such a good song. 😍
I remember seeing this video with my friends around New year's 1983. We were laughing our asses off.
The bus stop at the beginning is on Westminster Bridge opposite St Thomas Hospital..
I use to play this song for my sister when she'd go out with one of the schlubs she dated. all of them were like this guy, they ALWAYS dumped her before any gift giving occasion. after she gave them their gift first of course!

I have this on a mix tape somewhere. This tune is timeless to me...with the stinky East London video.
I saw this probably 1981ish the first time. Loved the smarmy smirk on the singer's face.
I have always had a huge crush on Nicky Tesco's date, since this video came out. 😂
I LOVE this classic GEM of a song. They don't write 'em like that any more. Thanks for the memories!!!👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽😊😊😊
I keep humming this song in 2022
