Thanks so very much for uploading this timeless classic. I have been a Members fan for decades and this is the first time i have seen this video. Great video, great song, lyrics. "and ye know no one so ye don't go out, and ye eat outta tins and ye watch television"
That's been an anthem for me for years! Saw them in London back in 82 twice, and going to be seeing them next month in Christchurch NZ. Go The Members!
Leningrad Cowboys Go America is a 1989 road movie by Finnish film director Aki Kaurismäki about the adventures of the Leningrad Cowboys, an eccentric band that travels to the United States to become successful, and combines their brand of polka music with various American styles as they make their way to Mexico.
Great upload! I love the sonic elements of The Members due in part to Steve Lillywhite's production. It has a crisp, new wave, 1979 feel to it. If you like this song then check out the fantastic "At the Chelsea Nightclub" album, chock-full of classics including "Soho-A-Go-Go" and "Love In A Lift".
I had to order this from England when I lived in Canada. It cost me $18, which was a helluva lot of money, slightly more than double the price of a regular lp. But well worth it!
Great song and I think the video really captured the song. The views of the subway look fuckin' scary. No cameras, lots of corners, dark with trash strewn along.
I don't know about never being broadcast till it was uploaded here. I definitely remember seeing a clip for this song back in the early '80s and I remember the scene of him stirring his baked beans. Maybe there were two versions.
quelle bonne musique passé à l'epoque dans mon lit des heures durant quand j allais me couche et encore beaucoup de morceau a trouver dont 1 des members uniquement a la basse que je ne trouve pas. help me. merci.
I was held hostage in Bislig in the Southern Philippines once a few years ago ... I doubt I would have got out of there if I didnt have my "best of the members" CD with me ... Solitary confinement ripples through the jungle like nothing else :-D
i always figured Living With Unemployment by the Newtown Neurotics was an original, but apparently was taken from Solitary Confinement by The Members. Newtown Neurotics - "Living with Unemployment"
These would have been great lyrics for old Rudy Hess to have recited or a great tune for him to have hummed whilst still alive in Spandau Prison. Perhaps someone should have sent him in a record player and some vinyl 45's.
just tryingto think have i got the 12 inch version of this away somewere. reggae song on the other side, cant reme.... o yes off shore banking business. serious. having a look now.
The original single of this was released on Stiff before they signed to Virgin.Their first released song was "Fear on the Streets" which was on a compilation called "Streets" released in 1977

You are living in the suburbs And you have problems with your parents So you move on up to London town Where you think everything's happening, going down Living in a bedsit Travelling on a tube train Working all day long And you know no one So you don't go out And you eat out of tins And you watch television Solitary confinement I have got a good job And I am working in the city Get the tube train at 8 o'clock and 5 And a really don't know if I'm dead or alive Living in a bedsit Travelling on a tube train Working all day long And you know no one So you don't go out And you eat out of tins And you watch television Solitary confinement
Great video, but they fade out before the band kicks into high gear. I much prefer the full version, which is here: ruclips.net/video/cTrlhrsAlN8/видео.html It makes the Stiff single sound sleepy. Probably the only recording that displays the full manic, lunatic energy of the band. A lifelong favorite.
...whatta band...i just heard the PEEL SESSIONS version of "Love in a Lift" and had to dig out my copy of the "FLYING HIGH" ep to get the STINCH of the Peel Session Version OUT of my head...GLAD they did NOT stick with the Hard Rock / REGGAE version...YUK...but whatta HIT that diddy iz...!!!

It's only been like a year since I heard this song, but I felt the necessity of just playing it three times in a row.

Did they do this first . I thought it was the Newtown Neurotics with living with unemployment.
The Members did it First! The Neurotics were also Great!
I love this song from the member thank you for having it for my listening pleasure. Awesome
Great stuff. Haven't listened to The Members before, but being a Kaurismäki fan, Nicky Tesco's a familiar face. Glad I gave this a try.

Mind blowing.
Great song about life...
Chrissake. Another one of us gone.
Terrific tune!
love this song thanks for posting the vid
Could do with being re-digitised with the correct interlace field order, so you don't get the comb effect on motion and pans
This Was Rescued from a Damaged American Umatic Tape... it is what it it is
I was held hostage in Bislig in the Southern Philippines once a few years ago ... I doubt I would have got out of there if I didnt have my "best of the members" CD with me ... Solitary confinement ripples through the jungle like nothing else :-D
Been to Philippines many times, but never had an adventure quite like that!
Gosh….is Bislig not safe?……I have a fiancé and daughter there……I hope it’s changed from when you posted this comment 😮
Great band!!!
Brilliant!
Que temazo, no pasan los años
This is a reworking of the Newtown Neurotics song called Living with unemployment!
Incorrect - this came first -
I want the live version with the singer wearing a cast!!!
i always figured Living With Unemployment by the Newtown Neurotics was an original, but apparently was taken from Solitary Confinement by The Members.
Newtown Neurotics - "Living with Unemployment"
come back to Dublin!
R.I.P
They were from the next town or village from where I grew up. Viva la Yateley. Lol. Top tune
+Steven Wheeler Camberley ahoy! :D It's like this song is about me!
Genius!
These would have been great lyrics for old Rudy Hess to have recited or a great tune for him to have hummed whilst still alive in Spandau Prison. Perhaps someone should have sent him in a record player and some vinyl 45's.

excellent, ça ne vieillit pas!
I never even knew a video had been made for this....thankyou youtube
i wish they could attach the original recording to this video.
The Members did a great job of pretending they were punky for a short time! Good shit!
70s magic, love it!!!
Reminds me of that song sound of the suburbs...not sure who sung it?
the members sung it
So true
these people made a shit out of my house one night in Los Angeles, and drank all the good stuff.
rupertps yeah but America deserves it 👍

Good tune, but I think I prefer the other version of it. They released another version on Stiff Records.
The original single of this was released on Stiff before they signed to Virgin.Their first released song was "Fear on the Streets" which was on a compilation called "Streets" released in 1977
I would love to give this a thumbs up, but the counter is at 666 and I would not like to disturb that! :D

Le seul morceau instrumental des Members que je connais c'est Handling The Big Jets.
Par contre y'a pas que de la basse.
What the world needs right now
Is that Old Street tube station near the end where he's running out?
Excellent as it always has been, J.C.!!!
THE MEMBERS ROCK
Not only is this song fantastic, but the Newtown Neurotics cover Living with Unemployment is great, too
Not quite a cover, more a reimagining, to use the vernacular
Fucking brilliant!
Classic!
Anthem!
Fuckin brilliant
did anything change in all those years? No man, it`s still the same.
You are living in the suburbs
And you have problems with your parents

Living in a bedsit
Travelling on a tube train
Working all day long
And you know no one

And you watch television
Solitary confinement
I have got a good job
And I am working in the city
Get the tube train at 8 o'clock and 5
And a really don't know if I'm dead or alive
Living in a bedsit
Travelling on a tube train
Working all day long
And you know no one
So you don't go out
And you eat out of tins
And you watch television
