This may be my favorite Prince reaction of all time! 💜 Thanks so much for doing it. I had a feeling you would really enjoy it. As others have mentioned, that’s Rhonda Smith on bass. She and John Blackwell are really something special together. I’ll send you some more Prince performances that include them. There are many with just P, Rhonda, John, and Renato Neto on keys, and they are brilliant performances. I often think about how much confidence John must have had to do all those tricks while playing with P. As we all know, P could be rough on his musicians (see Samantha’s comment as an example) so doing all those tricks knowing that you were going to hear it from P if you missed something is just so amazing to me. Although, I suspect that Prince also really loved the showmanship. Thanks again! I love love loved this reaction. Like Samantha, I’m watching again right now 💜💜💜
I am so glad you enjoyed it! I had an absolute blast on this one! Prince was on 🔥 (per usual) and John Blackwell brought the house down! The way he plays the drums is so effortless and stunning to watch! Thanks again! 😄
Hey, just came across your channel. This is a great rendition of Shhh and I've seen a couple of reviewers react to it BUT I would deeply encourage you to watch the version on the Beautiful Experience DVD. Much that was recorded live at the NBA All Star event hosted in Minneapolis that year. Michael Bland (who I do believe was the original drummer for the track) is on drums with Sonny Thompson on bass. OMG!!! Absolutely Transcendent 💯 . Pay special attention to the dueling interplay of the bass and lead guitar during the solos. I almost feel sorry for hipping you to this because of how pure this dope is. You'll get strung out on it. 😅 Alas, you can thank me later. Seriously though, that performance is truly special. Like magical bordering on spiritual.
Rhonda Smith is on bass, she’s my favourite of all of his bass players. John Blackwell was an amazing drummer, sadly no longer with us either. RIP to both he and Prince, two of the best to ever do it. 👌🏽🙏🏽💜
I love that you’re already familiar with John; I was wondering if you would be. He was a phenomenal drummer and such a sweetheart. I was fortunate to have pancakes with John at 4am once in 2014 after a recording session at Paisley Park for a jazz album that never got released. He told me a story about a time they performed this song and he accidentally hit the drums too hard during one of the verses. And Prince gave him the side eye and then when he solo came around, he was like, “Now, John. Now.” in the most annoyed tone. 😂😂 And then after the concert John thought he played a great show overall and was in a really good mood, and P made him cry cause he was pissed about that one moment in the show. 😭😭😭😂😂 And yes, sadly John passed away on July 4th in 2017, just over a year after Prince passed. I believe it was a brain tumor (maybe 2). He was in Japan touring with Nik West, and I think he was experiencing partial paralysis during a show and was taken to the hospital. I feel like he was in the hospital for quite a while before he passed on, but I could be wrong (just going off memory). Anyway…this was a great suggestion from Jenn and such a pleasure to watch! In fact, I’m gonna go back and watch it again. 😂
in my humble opinion i believe that John was his best drummer but that story makes me sad. 2 think and know that prince could be that mean of an a*$ gemini is not surprising. And that is why you had to come correct as a musician with the yoda. He could do That whatever you doing!
Also, in the spirit of “there’s only one Prince,” there’s a performance of this song from 2011 where his guitar stops working right when he goes into this song, so without missing a beat, he just performed all his solos on keyboards instead. 😂🫠
@@smh93yes that one is phenomenal as you watch him rearrange the whole song ‘on the fly’ …. Just genius! Look closely at the death stare he gives his guitar tech 🤣
