But, now my day job involves a lot more driving so for that reason alone I think doing Uber would potentially be dangerous, plus add to that all the extra craziness with the new hygiene standards and whatnot. From what I see here, it could potentially be worth it but I'd have to put in a lot of time just to be eligible for the projects that are halfway decent. I went ahead and did the application but I'm thinking it may not be worth it.
It's not a scam but you will be amazed at the amount of really lousy audio material that is up for grabs. Also, take a look at the pay rates, and consider how long it will take you to transcribe the various offerings.
I took the application test and didn't get accepted, but they don't tell you why the transcription wasn't approved. I can apply again in 45 days and I'm definitely going to. I felt kind of sucky because I felt like I did a really good job with it and took a lot of time to make it look (what I thought) was perfect. I also had a lot of fun doing the little test video and thought I could do a video here and there for a few pennies.
Thank you for a thoughtful video. I agree on what the ramp up looks like to get started. The compensation is equivalent to slave labor. For each video minute you transcribe, plan on 3X that in production. There is the simple transcription, there are the hang-ups that may require Google to sort out, horrible audio quality, language, and slang barriers, and then you must review the entire video again to sync it (which is an entire other project). After working in the legal environment and understand transcriptions as a profession, I believe this should just be illegal. I made $5 for 11mins of video that took well over 2 hours to reproduce accurately. If you want to dip far below minimum wage - go for it. Complete false advertising and should lead to a class action law suit IMHO.
I was going to fail rev anyway, the audio is bad and the REVIEWER will KILL your rating and eventually closing your account. Also it's time consuming, boring, pays below minimum wage $2.00 every 1hour. I rather build my own brand than work in this sweatshop
@@PirikkoP I know right, I transcribed for nearly 2 hours, got $4.14, with a speed of 65-70wpm... I can't even find a file under 20 mins on the work list anymore. Even the 20min files have horrific ear rap inaudible audio.

P-South Beats why do u keep asking people who clearly put in the work, time, effort, patience, frustration...etc to “get you an account”? The only person who can get u an account is u. And I’m assuming you’ve applied to Rev.com but did not get accepted right? If so have u applied several times and were not accepted? If that is the case then maybe that is not the job for u. We’ve all, at some point in our lives, have been rejected or not accepted or which ever way u choose to describe it. It doesn’t mean your a failure in any way! Just means maybe that job wasn’t the one for u.
i’ve transcribed about 20 audio files now, and the last one i did was 42 minutes. it took me 6 hours, the audio was not great and i had to re-listen about 4,000 times to every little thing. i made $20 for 42 audio minutes... even though it took me 6 hours. feels bad man. i worked hard on that.
@@brianp7493 I spent a year at Rev making beer money on the side. They demand steak, pay you for french fries, and then complain that the steak is overdone. Only the most docile of fools would put up with it. Typical rev worker: "I don't care how low the pay is because hubby pays the bills."
Okay wait... $1 an audio minute? I can transcribe perfectly 20 audio minutes in one hour. And I literally have no experience. Wouldn't that mean I'd be making $20 an hour ?!?!?
@@Drewski777 Rev charges $1/min to customers, but only pays their workers about 54 cents per minute, or maybe less now. For a fast worker, it takes about 1 hour to transcribe/caption ten minutes of audio, IF it's good audio quality. So that's about $5.40 per hour IF you're working very quickly and IF the audio quality is very good. Most of the jobs have terrible audio quality. Some jobs pay more than 54 cents per minute, but those tend to be atrocious in quality. Then the graders will go through your work with a fine-tooth comb and criticize you for totally inconsequential stuff. I've been failed on projects for typing lowercase "a" instead of capital "A" as in "A plus B equals C", and literally a thousand other minor insignificant details that no human could be expected to get right. They have no tolerance for errors or typos. IF you managed you survive for a few months and get to Revver+, you would get first pick of jobs in the queue, which means higher audio quality, easier jobs, but lower pay. Jobs that are less than a minute still pay a full minute. So a 10 second file still pays 54 cents. There are also occasionally easy videos with no dialogue, only music or atmospherics, or kids' videos like the alphabet song (ABCDE...). IF you can snatch those up first, you might make $20/hr, but they got very fast, are few and far between, and rarely last for more than 15 minutes.
I got kicked off rev and they won't tell me why. My account I apparently violating the guidelines because one account thought I had multiple accounts when I didn't !
Thank you so much for this video! I’m looking for a way to supplement my income and there are so many RUclipsrs online touting about how you can make all of this money online. This is informative. New to this area as I am, I've been looking into working from home. I do not know weather pursuing this is workable to my situation, or even will pan out, but I'm willing to take a step outside my normal experience. At the very least, it should prove interesting.
I have worked at Rev.com for a few years now as both a transcriptionist and captionist. Once I became a captionist I now do that exclusively. Rev.com has 2 type of jobs. 1. A transcriptionist (easy to get in on but a lot of bad quality audio particularly when you start and are a low level agent) and a Captionist (harder to get in on). You can do both. Something to note, you get paid every Monday through PayPal, however the pay is nothing to write home about. But when you are earning $0, this pay is great! When I was doing the transcription with Rev.com full time in between jobs, I was earning $200-$250 weekly
@@juan_eloise_miguel Not at all, when I first started I was typing around 30wpm, I'm now up to around 65wpm. So doing the work can definitely help increase your speeds. I got in on the first try. Just really study that style guide and keep it up at all times to reference. Rev just cares that you complete the job following the style guide/rules (they have folks checking and grading your work) and complete it in the time allotted.
I did it for a long while! Made pretty much no money but it was nice for feeling like I wasn’t doing much, but having some spare change being paid weekly to me! Eventually I was kicked off for making too many errors, though.. I do wish the training was longer or if you had a longer period of help
How many hours a week did you devote to this? You mentioned making an extra $40 a week and spending a "couple hours" rather than watching TV. Just curious as to how much time was put in and what your payments looked like.
I do closed captioning as a living 40 hours a week for the deaf and hard of hearing, I was thinking about doing this on my days off for some supplemental income since I already KIND OF know how to do it. I'm still in the middle of the video though, just felt the need to comment.
I was searching information about Rev and find your channel :o ! I loved your pronunciation. I'm sure that your videos will improve my listening Grettings from Ecuador :3
Perhaps it's not a scam, but their grading system is atrocious. Any grade under 90% accuracy is a fail. Having a GPA beneath 90% accuracy is a firing offense. Considering the bad quality of most of their audio files, this is perhaps the main thing that makes it very not worth working there.
The grading itself is fine. But the fact that they, nor the customers, never check audio quality is what is really frustrating. It's like some of these people are recording for the first time in their lives. Music and other junk in the background, people sounding like they're in a different room from the recording device. Or just plain old talking over each other. The one thing I will say about Rev though, is that I'm more aware of my use of filler words.
@@tiacool7978 At least 75% of the jobs they have are terrible audio quality, but they get hundreds of jobs a day. The practical way make up for that across the board would be to implement a more lenient grading system where you don't need to average a 4.5/5 to maintain employment. Or they could implement a system that isn't based off of percentages at all. To make a 4.4/5 GPA, which is basically 88 percent, a firing offence is ridiculous in my opinion.
It's actually 96% for Rev+, now that they upped the metrics requirements to 4.80 from 4.6 ( no more rounding out ). Revver is 90% at 4.5 but I wouldn't risk it because if you get a couple 4s you're out. I have noticed lately a lot of seemingly new and inexperienced graders, that even gave wrong grades & false information. I disputed & won for the first time since working there for 6 months. They probably saw an increase in workflow/TCers, so they needed to promote more graders fast, and this is what happens ...
30 cent a min is not bad, considering that when I worked customer service, I was only getting paid 22 cents a min and most of the clients that I worked for wanted to be done with each call in 6 mins or less

75 is fast. I can do 50 at most and can't imagine my brain operating any faster
I’ve been tested and have slow processing but I can type at 80wps pretty casually.
Your brains an amazing thing. it just takes practice.
Thanks for your help, Jessica! Great Vid!
Yeah, thanks so much!
This has been super helpful. Yay kind people of the internet!!
Aw I'm glad! 😄
This is all I needed to hear, thanks for breaking down the numbers as you did regarding pay. Moving on.
Compared to transcribeme and gotranscript, Revs exam is the one that makes most sense.
@@PirikkoP Sad to hear. Hope you find a job suitable for you.
Oh I totally agree. It's what happened to me. I was trying to get better and I was on my last three files when suddenly my account is closed and once it's closed you don't get back in. They nitpick and it's not perfect, you're out. Also, their guidelines stink.
Can't hardly find any videos now, they keep getting taken up so fast, I'm on that 10% till I get to become a full time, video quality's sub-par to say the least.
Hi sugarydelight, by the way the name fits you...jaja..well that is besides the point. I think the video is very well explained and edited. I have seen a few videos on the subject, but I have to say, that in this particular one, I have seen that you have been through out many obstacles in order to get involved in this business. Also, I clearly noticed, that you have done quite a few jobs related to the business, which in turns, is very helpful and informative to all the people, including myself, who wants to get involved in this interesting business. As a result you have my vote....thanks for the info..and keep been this cool and funny..:-)
I made it!! I tried to do captioning too but I didn’t make that one.
Can you get me an account kindly? Contact me at pnganda2@gmail.com
Wow thats cool to know. I applied and had no waiting period. I immediately got in.
Hi. Please shoot me an email on marykihara88@gmail.com. There is something I need to ask you, Thank you.
i’ve transcribed about 20 audio files now, and the last one i did was 42 minutes. it took me 6 hours, the audio was not great and i had to re-listen about 4,000 times to every little thing. i made $20 for 42 audio minutes... even though it took me 6 hours. feels bad man. i worked hard on that.
You didn't have that 20 before.
Lol
But yeah, I sorta agree
You still have it?
It was quite sad that rev dont accept the freelancing in my country :(
I majored in English...and got rejected. I don't think they check every person's submission.
Honestly, it was a blessing in disguise. You would've been taking abuse for $3/hr.
@@telescopicS627 You're probably right.
I’ve learned that most of them are freaking Clickbait LOL. I was thinking about trying to do transcription through transcribe me but I saw a video that said there wasn’t a whole lot of work on that site so then I found your video. After watching your video as well as the previous video that I just mentioned, I have decided not to go to transcription route. Why would I want to jump through all of the hoops of a test and everything only to discover that there isn’t any work 🤔. Thank you so much for your honesty in this review
Hi! Is it difficult for a 40wpm? Any advice on how to pass the test?
@@juan_eloise_miguel Not at all, when I first started I was typing around 30wpm, I'm now up to around 65wpm. So doing the work can definitely help increase your speeds. I got in on the first try. Just really study that style guide and keep it up at all times to reference. Rev just cares that you complete the job following the style guide/rules (they have folks checking and grading your work) and complete it in the time allotted.
@@parisianbyndum2982 thank you so much!! I'll keep that in mind. I will practice more first then go for the test. 😊
I do it in the winter to save up for my Spring vacation.
its wanting me to put in my files how tf do i do it for other people.
I did it for a long while! Made pretty much no money but it was nice for feeling like I wasn’t doing much, but having some spare change being paid weekly to me! Eventually I was kicked off for making too many errors, though.. I do wish the training was longer or if you had a longer period of help
how can we earn..how can we start
Excuse me.. Can u please touch to me ! I need your help .. please
Very informative and to the point. Great personality and a joy to listen to. Thanks
So, it would probably be a good idea to have a full-time job in addition to this one.
This should be a side hussle if you're good at it
Thanks for ur support
How many hours a week did you devote to this? You mentioned making an extra $40 a week and spending a "couple hours" rather than watching TV. Just curious as to how much time was put in and what your payments looked like.
Don't bother if you're from Cali. Positions are full as of this date 1/17/2020
Thanks for doing this! Helps a lot!
@Nduka Ethan UGUNA Payoneer is another platform they pay through
I'm laughing at the transcription done for this video! There are several errors! But this was very informative so thank you.
It's auto generated captions, meaning a computer program heard her words and wrote them out.
Where can I get a job transcribing like the closed captioning that is on this video? There is no punctuation, whatsoever!
i think thats just google doing its job
Not everyone around the world. People Africa are simply locked out due to geographical location and it is so unfair.
$40 a week for doing 'next to nothing' !!!!???? Bit misleading to say the least. IT'S HARD WORK
I just submitted my application. hope i get in though some people are saying that they are rejecting applicants, so i am praying right now
Bruce Ryder did you get the job?
@@evy8902 no
I do closed captioning as a living 40 hours a week for the deaf and hard of hearing, I was thinking about doing this on my days off for some supplemental income since I already KIND OF know how to do it. I'm still in the middle of the video though, just felt the need to comment.
@Bb Dl yes!
@Bb Dl nice! Which center? I'm in meridian! I'm in training. (:
@Bb Dl oh I meant I'm a trainer :b
@Bb Dl which center is MI center? (: What's your name?
I was just accepted, kind of excited to start

Thanks for the heads up. BTW your hair looks ok to me.
@@tiacool7978 The worst is when you can hear them eating. Immediate unclaim !!
@@tiacool7978 I'm actually editing out the filler "likes" in my videos & I started compiling them in one video ... got 90 seconds so far hahaha
30 cent a min is not bad, considering that when I worked customer service, I was only getting paid 22 cents a min and most of the clients that I worked for wanted to be done with each call in 6 mins or less
Very informative. Thank you for the review.
She is so beautiful, I cannot get over how much she looks just like my high school sweat heart!! FYI I am single and it only took me 45 second's to type this!! Rev pays for French fries and expects steak, then complains that the steak is overdone. People who work there are docile and stupid.
@John Smith No. Still have an account, though I never use it anymore. It was revver+ but I'm sure that rolled off by now.
How old do you have to be to join? Thank you!
how would you go about taxes?
Can you start and stop an audio file as you go? I have a lot of downtime at work, so this would be great to occupy my slow time, but can I pause it when I have to do my actual job and come right back to where I left off?
yes you can
Who else put on Captions while watching this video?
I can type 60 WPM with 97.87 % accuracy. Thank for the lesson. Let's roll for interview. Wish me luck baby.

Hey there I’m British and was wondering if I would have to use American spellings for example, would I use ‘color’ instead of the British ‘colour’ spelling? Anyway, great video! - is this a good starter website or would you recommend something else?
Hey! I'm Canadian so I can relate, we use British spelling. On this website I'd use American spelling as the standard though! I think if you start typing 'colour' though it autocorrects to 'color' so you should be good :)
Jfjf Jrjfif it automatically changes British spelling to American for me. So if I type tyre, it will auto correct to tire.
