    Never rent your car out to anyone! I work for a towing company that tows for five police departments, no private property towing. We are contracted by the police to respond to accidents and impounds. Nearly every week we tow a vehicle or two that belongs to a nationally-recognized car rental company. These vehicles have police holds on them, which means that the driver has violated traffic laws or been involved in a crime. The average person would have very little access to screening potential drivers. This is a big NO.

      Marcia Pemberton As a criminal law paralegal I was thinking the same thing. Plus, the possibility of a law suit from the renter or even from a victim of the criminal renter. IF I were up to no good, renting a car from a private citizen would be my first choice.

      I wouldn't rent out my can on the account that Mechanical problems are expensive and if they hit something and a gasket pops or I have transmission problems from them gunning the engine I'm screwed and what they paid to rent it won't match the price I'll be paying to fix it. I also use my car a lot so i'll pass on that.

    Just like driving for Uber and Lyft, it's also important to factor in maintenance costs for your car depending on how often you're renting it out. You should subtract those extra costs from any profit you make when estimating potential gains.

      *I'm not 100% sure that Uber drivers are even technically insured while driving clients. I seem to remember language in my own insurance policy that precludes using my vehicle for business purposes, and I somehow doubt every Uber driver is paying for more expensive business activity coverage. Or that Uber is picking up the tab.*

    Petsitting can be a relatively laid back job, however it can also be challenging and time consuming. Here are some examples to consider (all from experience):
    Most clients who seek housesitting/petsitting do so because they have a pack of dogs that would be extremely expensive to board. Nearly all my clients have four dogs. One of my clients requires that each of her four dogs gets walked separately every morning. Think about fitting that in before your workday! Also, packs of dogs are generally high maintenance and require your UNDIVIDED attention otherwise temper tantrums ensue. No writing, reading, watching, etc.
    One of my clients packs wakes me up every morning hours before I usually wake up, and when I try to lay down later I get clawed by their giant boxer. After a week of this, exhaustion really sets in.
    You will have to deal with people who do not care about their dogs, and fight the urge to tell them off. One of my clients refused to cut her sheep dogs hair in the summer and lets her pant all day in her barely air conditioned house (we live in the desert). Another instructed me to leave the AC set to 90 degrees whenever I left her house. This gets quite upsetting.
    Some dogs aren't trained. You might be cleaning up poop every single day, multiple times a day. Some dogs are going to bark at everything, at every time of the day, all week.
    I often drive 60 miles between my day job and a client's house, which adds up in gas and time.
    Every new client requires an initial meeting, and I've had many a weekend eaten up by commuting from client to client to meet with them, unpaid. Some clients won't book with you after that, too.
    I love dogs. I love being around dogs. Making a business out if watching strangers dogs isn't quite as easy as it seems, though.

      puipoo I couldn't agree more! You've summed it up well. It can be a great side hustle but it comes with a bit of sacrifice!

    • @Irene-gq4jr
      @Irene-gq4jr 5 лет назад +4

      puipoo you are correct, it is not easy. I did a bit of dog walking for a few weeks and quickly figured out that many clients are people who are 'too busy' to train/walk their dogs and insist on a dog walker running the dog(s) to exhaustion so they don't have to deal with bad doggy behaviour of their own doing. Any behavioural good I could do was immediately undone by the owners, who I felt cared but in the wrong ways, so I get that feeling of wanting to yell at them "Why do you even have a dog if you have no time to invest in him?!!!".
      Letting someone else's underexercised, badly behaved dog off lead is a minefield. One small dog I had to take miles from anywhere (practically negating any financial benefit) because he would chase cars and sheep, had zero recall and I relied on tricking him with his tennis ball to catch him; he had no fear of running up to a pack of big dogs he didn't know - basicaly, he hadn't been socialized at all and sooner or later he was going to get ripped to bits. Another dog walker had passed this client to me and I soon realized why - turned out he did a runner on her and she got stressed out to the max. I also walked two sweet Cocker spaniels who were a joy, so excited when I arrived but a pair of rascals to catch at the end of the walk because they were enjoying it so much they didn't want to go back! I was trialling this as an income generator and wasn't yet insured, so for the first time in my life I actually found it stressful to walk a dog and decided it wasn't for me. If I were ever to do this again it would be with the caveat 'for company, socializing, gentle exercise locally and toileting: dog(s) always kept on lead'.

    • @CS-zq1nh
      @CS-zq1nh 5 лет назад +3

      I've had friends who are artists do dog walking/cat sitting in order to make a living. It's a lot of work, even as a side hustle. Many clients require two visits per day (AM/PM). They had to schedule clients in a localized area so they weren't running all over the city. It also takes awhile to build up clientele. The only benefit for them was a flexible schedule, no dress code, no 'boss'.

    • @VeganDynamite
      @VeganDynamite 4 года назад

      Yeah, I've been a full-time professional pet sitter for 8 years, and it kind of annoys me when people suggest it as a - what's the title of this video again? - "extremely lazy" side hustle. Lol. I've taken CPR and first aid training multiple times (which I've actually had to use), broken up dog fights, been bitten, scratched, worked when I'm sick, worked when I'm injured, worked my birthday and holidays, cleaned up all kinds of messes, dealt with terrible clients (and learned when to fire them). But I think the most important thing is knowing what to do in an emergency, because being unprepared could literally mean life or death. I don't recommend becoming a pet sitter or dog walker unless you're really invested, and I don't recommend hiring a pet sitter or dog walker who doesn't have at least a couple years of experience in professional animal care (volunteering, vet med, etc).

    A friend has a great little business renting out her baby items. With minimalism being more popular she has tons of business. Swings, carriers, furniture, toys etc. Also a friend has an old camper and brought it to a campground to rent out. Such great ideas.

  • @OnlyInThisLight
    @OnlyInThisLight 6 лет назад +184

    It's sad that some of the items on this list are reminders that to make money, you have to have money. Homes or nice cars to rent, good quality furniture to sell. This coming from someone who, more or less, has both because I'm lucky enough to have a full time job (not so much on it being well paid or even paid appropriately considering the education required, but, enough so that I have a small apartment without too much stress about rent and nice little used car I'm close to paying off). Kind of a weird suggestion, but do you have or would be willing to do a video on "what to do" during a money crisis? Say getting laid off, sudden debt, etc? Not even long term planning but short term advice to help someone stay afloat for 1-2 months needed to get back on track. I know a lot of people, say, are to afraid to use local pantries for food, hygiene items or clothing, when most have a first time no questions asked policy and that can save you a grocery bill for that month (there is no shame in this, you can always pay them back with donations or volunteering in the future, the pantries are set up to help). Some aren't sure how to file for unemployment, etc. I think even just having a plan would help lessen anxiety for persons who don't have a lot of job security.

      She’s already made a video on it, it’s called an emergency fund. Anyone who’s making money, and especially someone who’s making money for the first time in their life like a teenager, needs to be saving for an emergency fund if they do not have one. And if you don’t have one, then it really is an emergency. That’s the thing about capitalism, the system that we live in in America, is that all good things goes to those who wait or are prepared.

      Actually the first way to stay afloat would be to make as much money as possible, not use credit cards, learn to rein in your spending then during periods of unemployment you can stay afloat it isn't hard to figure out how to file for unemployment you can go to the unemployment/welfare offices to get what you need.

    Questions: How do you prevent people from destroying/stealing your stuff when you 'rent' them? What if you don't have a smart phone, do those aps still work on a tablet or through email? All these 'lazy' things sound like they take tons of work. Sorting stuff, selling stuff, getting people to partner with you, using aps that might be scams... I only agree with investing with a real bank as an easy way to make money and my cash-back credit card.

    Useful pet sitting info is that in many places you need a licence, especially if you have the pet stay with you.
    Here in the UK, for example, you can stay in someone's house and look after their pet, but to have the pet stay with you, you need to be a registered boarder, with licencing and regulation.

    Radical decluttering is also an excellent way to save money. I just returned to the US after living abroad. Having to fit all my belongings in two suitcases called for radical decluttering (I used the KonMari method) also made me reevaluate what I actually care to own. Because I own less and shop less now, I spend considerably less and now am more willing to actually invest in quality pieces.

It doesn’t have to be such a great neighborhood although I do live in one. My friend in Harlem makes 4000.00 for a small extra bedroom. If you’re in Manhattan or close to it you can make a pretty penny. Although, my place is legal . The city is trying to find ways to prevent us from continuing. The point of this is to tell you that although I don’t really love welcoming strangers to my home I’m willing to be a little uncomfortable temporary because it’s quiet lucrative.

    I did a huge Konmari style decluttering before I emigrated. I made £300 of all my manga on ebay, about £200 from my Japanese language learning books (I had a library's amount) to students as a Japan-English social group, and my uni text books sold for a lot too, like £20 to 30 each to other student, so I made a lot from just books. My old retro-ish games also sold well; my Pokemon Silver surprisingly sold for £40 by auction on ebay! I imagined it would sell for less than £10 since it's a super old game I must have gotten a decade or so ago

      Yeah it was my entire Fruits Basket and Vampire Knight series. Each FB book sold for £10 and went like hot cakes, but Vampire Knight so much, it was hard to get rid of it so I ended up selling each for £3-4. All my old GBA and PS1 stuff was surprisingly a lot easier and sold for much higher than my newer PS3 stuff which hardly sold for anything. Good thing I kept it all until the value went up!

    Pet sitting is my full-time job and it can be really difficult. I had a dog get attacked when a neighbor dog got into its yard. I've had clients tell me their elderly cat may die while they are gone and how to deal with its remains. Even the easiest dogs need walked, fed, and given medication. Its nearly impossible for myself (and the other sitters I've talked to) to get a decent nights sleep on overnight visits for many reasons.
    In addition to that there are many costs. I am licensed, insured, and bonded which costs about $400 a year. On busy days, I can drive over a hundred miles between client's homes.
    Pets are very special and loved by their owners. Taking care of them is a big responsibility.

    I highly recommend pet sitting and dog walking if you love animals!!! I started using Wag and Rover during my 3rd year of medical school as a way to play with dogs and relieve stress. I didn't think I'd be able to make much money, but it's been soooo much better than I expected! I've made over $200 just from pet sitting for a weekend. Usually Rover is where I book the bigger/ more lucrative stays, and I use Wag for 20, 30, or 60 minute dog walks that range from $8-21 a few times a month. It's not my primary job, but it's a fun side hustle.

I suggest anyone considering this puts serious research into it. Also expect your maintenance to cost $0.50- 0.85 per mile driven and seriously consider if this is going to be worth the hassle and inconvenience long term.

    I don't know if anyone has mentioned this in relation to surveys, but you can sign up for Google Rewards, if you're an Android user, and do surveys for Google dollars that you can use to purchase anything at Google Play. Books, magazines, tv shows, movies apps, games, etc. And most surveys take less than a minute and the Google money accumulates fairly quickly because you get surveys at least once a day.

      I am trying to choose between eBay and Amazon... What made you go for eBay? Better prices? Any other reasons? Thanks!

    • @ashleyhood7479
      @ashleyhood7479 6 лет назад

      Lenysea ooh! Good question! I actually didnt look into Amazon. eBay charges 10% of the final sale vale and let’s you post 50 free listings per month. PayPal then takes 2.95% + 30 cents as it’s cut. I compared this option with other companies like Vinted, Poshmark, or Thread Up since I mostly want to sell clothes. Those apps take a larger cut and don’t have an auction feature, so I chose eBay! The best feature of eBay that I like is the auctions. They will help you sell your stuff a lot faster if you start the price low. I’ve only sold 4 items so far, but all have gone for a nice amount of money, more than I expected! One of them sold via the “best offer” option where I listed for $20, which was honestly a reach and someone offered $15 and I accepted!

    It was heavily implied you don't when you mentioned you were going to download the sweatcoins app, meaning you didn't try it before recommending it and that implied you probably weren't thinking too much about trying the other services as well. If I'm wrong I'm sorry for assuming but that is the impression that has been given off.
    As well as try to make your advice a little more friendly to people for low income people and those in rural areas. You live in New York which is probably hard for you to relate to rural experiences, but a friendly alternative to some things would be greatly appreciated.
    In the end a lot of things you say in this channel are amazing advice and I've learned a lot from this channel.

    about reselling textbooks: I guess because in the US you have legal system largely based on precedents, you could sell law textbooks. However, in Germany we have an ever changing civil code, hence that textbook I bought last year is already outdated because there were one or two changes that aren't covered or now falsely covered in my textbook. Better solution is to go to the library in the first place.

    Petsitting is a huge side gig for me and the demand continues to grow as my reputation is spread and people catch up with post covid travel. I only do it for people who know my current clients. It fits well into the bookends of my day as a single woman who does solo contract work as my primary job. $40-60/day depending on the demands. It's extra income so I don't do it if the animals suck or it's too far outside my regular travel. I always stay at their place to minimize travel. I love animals so I don't mind adjusting my sleep schedule to accommodate earlier routines and enjoy having reasons to do morning walks (paid exercise!). I get to stay on beautiful farms and often bigger houses with nice bath tubs, for example, which was an especially big deal once upon a time when I lived in a shifty small apartment with my boyfriend.

    I've never had much luck with surveys. They always seem to lead to needing to go out and buy something to have something to say about what they are asking about.Anybody else had better luck?

    Wealth Simple doesn't cater to African currencies but thanks for the advice. Sometimes I feel like these companies genuinely aren't trying to help African people help themselves.

    What do you do if someone trashes your place or won't give back the keys when you rent it out though? That's my worry with airbnb.

    Question I have for TFD is how are wealth simple management fees? You guys keep promoting wealth simple, however I have found that often these robo advisers charge more for management fees than you get in returns. As opposed to a self-directed account where you are making relatively the same decisions by yourself. I think this is especially important for low dollar account investors. I think the break even is usually around $1000. So starting an account for $1 is not as good as it seems. That being said this is a good channel and I appreciate the good financial advice.

    *Sigh* Swagbucks pays in "cash" by redeeming your points for Paypal, which you can deposit to your bank account.

    This is completely unrelated to your video, but how do you do your hair? It is so cute? I have super straight hair and am trying to find ways to make it look like it has more volume.

    I got screwed over buying a bridesmaid dress and then being kicked out of the wedding. It's still new with tags but I can not sell it for the life of me. Does anyone know a good time to sell and a good place to sell? I've checked consignment shops and Craigslist, and most of those websites don't want formal wear

      Poshmark or something similar might be your best bet if you don’t have a high end consignment shop near you :)

    With Sweatcoin you don't earn money. You earn virtual "cash" which you can only exchange to things. And you earn ca 10$a month if you are having very active life.
