Of all the places I've gotten retro stuff for games, they have been the most consistently reliable place to get them. Everything I've gotten from them works well. That's a lot more than I can say for the stuff I've found on eBay. The pricing is pretty competitive as well.
I don't see that as a scam. I see it as a small business doing what they can the best they can.
It was the crumb. Once you removed the Pepperidge Farm cookie crumb it threw the entire balance of the console off. Not only does Pepperidge Farm remember, but it's the glue that holds vintage consoles together.

I worked with a legacy/retro video game refurbishment company a few years ago and we would open the consoles up prior to attempting to power the console. In addition checking as many mechanical components as possible prior to attempting to power it on. This is just good conduct for refurbishment and functionality testing.

I ALMOST bought from dk oldies a couple years ago. Even though they had what i wanted, their insane prices kept me from ever placing an order. Thank goodness because I most likely would have been disappointed to triple over pay for a damaged game.

Back in the early to mid 2000s. There were a few locally owned game shops that were soldering mod chips for PlayStation 1&2 systems to play import games.
I'm almost sure one of them also modded OG Xbox units as well.
As I didn't have internet or the necessary hardware back then.
I would have paid them to do it for me.

What DKO should really be doing with these systems in particular is replacing the cheap capacitors that MS used to build the OGXB so that they don't explode and melt through the Mobo. If they aren't, that alone is a huge red flag. Your dad is spot on.
Also thanks to you and some other creators for sounding the alarm on these guys, I really had no idea what they were like until recently.
It wasn't that they cheaped out with the caps, but rather a result of the great capacitor plague that involved botched industrial subterfuge that resulted in millions of devices from consoles to TVs to PCs all having caps fail.
And if it fails it can stop any games playing no matter if it's leaked onto the mobo or not
@@irontobias It sorta depends on the console. Obviously it's not a bad idea to replace on pretty much anything if it's old enough, but caps are a major issue for Xbox and Game Gear in particular for different reasons because they both had low quality components on the board.
@@irontobias Actually, you're slightly off. Nichicon was and is a good brand - the issue with the ones used on the OG Xbox' CPU filtering were a bad batch that ran from 2001 to 2005. I know this as I have a whole bag of them from various Pentium 3 and 4 mainboards of the era.
Not defending DKOldies (they can go suck DK's fat gorilla dong honestly) but just wanted to say this as a interesting fact. It's mostly version 1.2 and newer that suffered from this, and only the units that used Nichicons. I have two 1.4s and they both had United Chemicon caps on the places where the DKOldies Xbox had Nichicons.
I'm never buying a single thing from them. Thank you for exposing these liars.
Just buy something and return it if it's not good. It will cost them money and if they are shipping this much garbage they'll go out of business eventually
Consoles, I'm not risking it. However, some of their games are stupid cheap and ship very fast. Even then, they come in flimsy bubble mailers. I'd like to see them improve and Joey to do a few pushups.

There's a game store that my roommate is friends with the owner of. I bought a refurbished ps4 from him about six months ago. It works like a charm.
My point is: when it comes to older consoles, buy locally. More often than not, what you get will be in very good shape.

The reason the discs weren't being read properly was 100% the capacitors. Once they got warmed up from the machine being on they started to work but they will fail and should have been replaced.
Also the Thompson drive is a terrible DVD drive
What I do when I get a used console is I'll do what I call a "stress test" by letting it run for an hour or 2 with a disc in and see how it holds up to your average gaming session. Sadly this poor xbox couldn't even make it through loading a disc. Love the transparency in your videos. Been watching your stuff for years but this DKOldies stuff is by far the best stuff. Keep up the great work.

I don't know why more people don't do this, but if I were to have my machine repaired or cleaned, I would love to see actual photos of my console opened with a before and after so I can see what was done. Just a suggestion.

10:26 something easy to miss but if the console is asking for a time and date, the CMOS battery is dead. They charge double the value of the console, claim to refurbish it but didn't want to spend an extra 2 bucks and take the extra few seconds to replace the CMOS?

@@thomasandrews9355 yeah just remembered that. It's still pretty foolish to sell OG xbox's and not remove that thing. I recall hearing that thing is a ticking time bomb and if it leaks it'll break the console.
Unfortunately, there is no way to say for sure from this video.
IF the original owner or DKO factory reset the console; then it will ask for the date and time settings when being booted up for the first time.
If the clock capacitor is dead; it would ask for the date and time settings every single time you turn on the console...
I wish that Rich would've powered down the console and let it sit for 10 minutes so that we could see if the disc drive stopped working again AND if the date and time settings came back up!!
I'm pretty sure there's a 99% chance the capacitor is not working because it obviously wasn't refurbished in any way whatsoever..... BUT since Rich didn't turn the console off and start it again; we can't say for sure :(
I really hope someone takes DKO to court over this "refurbished" crap they are doing... I know that refurbished is a very broad term and it would be hard to win a court case over the term "refurbished" since there is no solid list of things that need to be done in order to call it refurbished.... BUT since DKO literally does NOTHING to the inside of the consoles; I'm sure someone can take them to court and win since they don't touch the consoles at all...
@@lightningfarronxp8899 it is a ticking time bomb my brother bought me a used original xbox bundle from ebay for 120$ CAD with 2 controllers and 8 games including halo ce and halo 2 and found out about the capacitor so when i got it it was super dusty dust bunnies everywhere cleaned it out took out the Capacitor which was JUST starting to slowly leak so i cleaned it up dusted it out looks almost brand new closed it up and bam other than it closing on its own once before a put a disc in it works absolutley fine now another note is if its a Version 1.6 then theres no worry about the Clock capacitor anything before 1.6 yes you should take it out
The OG xbox doesn't use a standard CMOS battery it uses a clock capacitor board revisions 1.0-1.5 do not require the cap to be installed for the console to function but they used a a really low quality aerogel capacitor that was prone to leaking so most people remove them. the 1.6 boards require the clock capacitor and it uses a gold nichicon capacitor stock without the cap 1.6 boards will not boot but if the capacitor goes bad it's only 50.60 cents for a replacement much cheaper than a battery.
The one thing I have to comment on… is the awesome relationship you have with your father. I think it’ is amazing you two are on video doing things you both love. It reminds me of my father and our bond when it comes to working on older trucks or even modding our current vehicles. Rock on duds.

I saw when you unpacked the xbox that the system had never been opened, because one of the stickers that covers one of the screws was intact and wasn't torn or anything, meaning all they did was see if the system powered on and booted to the main menu, and called it "refurbished". They even left the infamously leaking clock capacitor intact.
I've seen vids of people managing to remove those stickers showing people how to do so and put them back without leaving a trace. But DKoldies certainly didnt put in that amount of effort.
I bought a broken og Xbox off eBay for 40 bucks. Swapped out old hdd and the broken DVD player and added a 400gb hdd and softmodded it. Best console I've ever owned. I bought another broken Xbox for 20 bucks, swapped out the mb and og hdd for an additional 40 and now I have an og and a modded Xbox for 100 bucks.
Buying an already Modded Original Xbox is probably cheaper than what DKoldies sell for their "not so Refurbished" Consoles which aren't Modded at all.
As quickly as your old man got to work on that console, I would wager he has worked on more electronics than DK Oldies ever will. Would be awesome to see a video of just him working on a console and replacing parts, just to see him speed through it.

Me and Many others have been screaming at the top of our lungs that DK oldies is the WORST reseller is history. My poor mom watching RUclips, bought over $600 worth of retro games for my dad as an anniversary gift with the new man cave addition to our little house. We set EVERYTHING up perfectly just to have the SNES burn out after only an hour of gaming and half of the PlayStation 1 discs where readable, but would crash or hang about a 30 minutes into the actual game play.... We where confused and my mom was sad.... We got a full refund after two months of legal threats from my parents lawyer.....

The fact that the sticker under which one of the screws was still intact shows that the console had never been opened before
while that is highly likely true, the console absolutely can be opened without puncturing that sticker and somebody that prides themselves in doing a good restoration would not pierce the sticker, its fairly easy to remove the sticker partially thus preserving it. Its not like the paper type stickers used in many other products its very much preservable. If these guys knew as much as they think they knew they would know the heatsink they were trying to get off but couldn't absolutely can be taken off and it would expose the huge GPU underneath. Ive taken apart roughly 7 or so of these and its very common to see the thermal paste exactly as it was in this video and the console still work just fine.
Those 3 caps on the power rail, near the CPU are always bulging and are usually the first to go. They're 6.3 volts, but if you replace them, I'd highly recommend getting higher voltage caps, like 10volts or higher, 25volts would be better. They'll last another 20 years if you get higher rated caps. Those caps, along with the PSU caps should be changed at a minimum, especially if you're calling the system refurbished. The system will fail sooner rather than later if those mentioned caps aren't replaced.
It's not the rating that causes them to bulge, it's the placement next to the heatsinks which causes the electrolyte to boil inside of them. It's a design placement thing. 6.3vs are completely fine.
6.3 is adequate, which is why Microsoft used them, but most pro modders all recommend higher voltage caps in those spots. All other specs being equal, higher voltage caps almost always result in longer life. Those specific caps get hammered way more than the others on the PCB, and it's not simply because they're close to the heatsinks.
Seagull the thing is this was during the capacitor plauge so 98% of capacitors on the market were faulty
It's more so the higher value ones that are the worst. Such as the 1F clock cap known for eating it's way out of the cases on these. The lower value stuff the chemistry isn't too destructive on and they function fine enough. What causes these to fail though is heat and whilst increasing the rating may make them last a tiny bit longer out of their own workload, the heat is still going to give them a premature death.

Sending a “secret packaged” to the same town you live is almost guarantee/suspicious it was you again lol especially them knowing you want to make a video on them.
This is doing what one of mine did as the disc drive was beginning to fail. My first gen one. The originals seemed to have hyper-sensitive drives in them, like the most minor scratches would stop it. Always with someone elses games, mine were usually in pretty good shape.
your dkoldies content is great. also helps bring awareness to a scam, and a company that seemingly avoids acknowledging the legitimate criticism of their business practices.
The internet has a VERY short attention span. They could send a bomb to someone in the mail, that person make a video about it and they would continue to get as many customers because of their reach and A+ marketing on all social media platforms. 🤷🏻♂️
I'm glad Rich has been doing these videos because I've gotten Walmart ads showing ridiculously priced retro consoles from DKO and I was very skeptical but wasn't in the market for retro stuff anyway so I just ignored it

DKOldies just responded to someone on their latest video and says the third party controller is a option. Their response is "The customer makes the decision on which controller they get. Many customers prefer the 3rd party controllers as they're a cheaper option and still work great for playing games." Was it a option for you to get that third party Xbox controller?
Sadly DKOldies is also raising the market value of the items they sell. It’s almost impossible to find vintage consoles for less than a 200% markup.

One of the easiest ways to see if an original Xbox has been opened is if the stickers on the bottom are intact. You have to destroy two to get to remove two screws. Also look for the dreaded clock capacitor.
That's the first thing I looked for when he took it out of the box & you can see that the stickers are intact.
You can actually remove the sticker without damaging it at all. I do it all the time to clean my consoles new and old

I remember I emailed DKoldies awhile back before this whole non refurbished console thing going on. I asked if they cleaned the inside of consoles and asked if they put new thermal paste on. I was expecting an answer the next day at the least. Never got an answer 😂.

Btw, the capacitor issue on the OG Xbox is a VERY common failure point. They should know better. I don't repair old consoles, and even I know that.
Whats really funny to me is I watched their videos, got really nostalgic for the Game Boy, saw their priced and ended up getting an IPS GBA SP for the price of one of their stock units, and started buying games from other places at cheaper prices.

I've had discs that were easily 10x as scratched as those read perfectly fine in OG xboxes when the disc drive was functional and clean.

Back in Christmas 2011, my Mom picked me up an original Xbox that was still sealed in original packaging, never once opened or used, came with original controller needless to say as well as the first Forza Motorsport (awesome game btw, held up very well in 2012), and she only paid about $120 for it from a retro video game store. $260 for that refurbished heap of junk is easily a scam. I think I see the real meaning now with their “refurbishing process” vid. Basically, by “refurbishing”, they meant ONLY cleaning inside out, but not repairing their consoles or replacing outdated components. Man, just imagine sending them your drifting controllers for repair and rather than replacing parts like the sticks, they just clean it. 😂

They did the same to me too, because I retweeted a tweet from President Joe Biden, where he said that companies should lower their prices, so I said, does that include DK oldies, (which was clearly a joke). That tweet has since been deleted.
the fact that they give you a third-party controller as default, and on top of that MAKE YOU PAY AN EXTRA ADD-ON PRICE for a first party controller is egregious enough and alarming on it's own...
Not even mentioning the fact that they're not actually refurbished and even the bare minimum is skimped over, is absolutely horrible

I came here to see if they 1. Gave you and OEM controller 2. Gave you OEM AV cables 3. Addressed the clock capacitor if it's one of the revisions with the cheap aerogel caps 4. Inspected the xbox for any bulging caps.
The fact that it didn't read discs tells me some of the caps have gone bad or they couldn't be bothered to clean and inspect the disc drive.
For 260 bucks, you can buy a fucking modded xbox off someone. Which has been taken apart, has had the clock capacitor removed or replaced and even comes with a new fucking harddrive. I knew they didn't even bother replacing the bad caps and I guarantee they left the leaky clock capacitor as is.
I literally found a free Xbox outside in the scandinavian winter. Worked and looked pristine. I feel bad for anyone buying at these absurd prices
A few things you got wrong on the insides of the XBOX:
- The bad caps are not what is affecting the DVD reading issues (but they should be replaced). That is a Thomson drive (I can tell by the tray), basically the worse of the main three options, Samsung, Philips and Thomson. There were some Hitachi toward the end of the OG XBOX I believe. The Thomson drives get finicky toward their end. Clean the laser and try again. Otherwise, replace it or mod it. OG XBOX DVD drives are interchangeable unlike it's younger brother, the 360.
- The GPU thermal paste is a thermal adhesive. Remove the clip, get the heatsink hot (play a game, heatgun, etc.), then remove the hot heatsink CAREFULLY! I did rip a GPU off once. Luckily, the board was bad.
- That clock capacitor needs removed or replaced (I replace mine). Nothing wrong there, just something to do on non-1.6v motherboards. TIP: If the clock cap is black and says 'Aerogel' Remove it. If it is gold and black, it should be safe. That is what is on 1.6 motherboards which is actually near the IDE port. I have a 1.4v motherboard with the same black/gold clock cap which I kept on and another 1.4v I had replaced its Aerogel cap.
Agreed! I've taken apart a few of these and realized that there were three main Disc Drives being Hitachi, Samsung and Thompson and by far Thompson is the worse and usually are the first ones to fail. Add on top of the fact that these systems go through mail and take hits will cause it to fail faster and add on top of that age, as these are over 20 year old disc drives which no matter how well you keep them they will eventually fail. Caps that old need to be replaced. Every xbox I've opened has had Cap explosions and I've gone through about three or more. I regret selling my OG Xbox with Hitachi Disc Drive as the two I have left are Thompson. One of them has died already just waiting for the other to go.

They do focus on modding too, which is something you might want to do anyway. I think you need to to use the community created XBOX Live! I think MVG did a quick overview of that not too long ago.

@@Chaotic818 no it's not. Rick's videos are easily cut up enough that he can tell the narrative he wants without being entirely truthful. And the shipping box was clearly opened and resealed prior to shooting the video. Not saying he did anything, but he could have theoretically tampered with this product prior to rolling camera, or switched out a working Xbox with a non-working unit between cuts. Again, not saying he did any of that (though I personally think he isn't being entirely truthful because these DK Oldies videos are popular for him and controversy sells), I'm just more trying to make a point in this response about the editing process. Today, more than ever, it's simple to fake things on the internet.
That thermal interface material is fine, although it is the original factory pad.
They didn't use traditional thermal paste, instead using a phase-change thermal pad. The same stuff came pre-applied to stock CPU heatsinks back in the PIII era.
It softens when heated, allowing it to fill micro gaps like thermal paste does, when it's cold it's more like a set adhesive.
Probably should have done them both exactly the same. You started the modded xbox with the game in, but not the DK xbox. Just so no one could say ANYTHING about the process, it's always best to follow the exact same method. Obviously the thing is garbage, but it may stop some doubters from jumping in.

By a psp and wiiu hack them yourself and you will have games to last many years no point buying old tech I also have a pc to run all the emulators I want but the above two gets me hours of joy. I do buy games but I don't like buying them over and over to kerop them on one system like my zelda games I own 2 or 3 times

Please also be aware of the clock capacitor, if it's earlier than a 1.6 model. Those capacitors need to be replaced as soon as possible. They are notoriously leaky and destroy traces. I found this out the hard way, but thankfully, my skills improved since then so I was able to repair the damaged traces that connected to the power button.
Pre-v1.6, you can just remove the clock cap.... no need to replace it. It just keeps the system time when unplugged. V1.6 and 1.6b revision both REQUIRE the cap, but M$ switched to a better cap due to the leakage issue.

It really is quite sad, really. All he knows for “news” is consistently attacking/bullying everybody for clicks that has wronged him. Half his news stories are nothing huge lie IGN, TechRadar, The Verge, etc, all have big news to report on. The long and short is he’s a clickbaiter who only ever has *negative* media news stories to cry about. He did the same garbage to Quantum over 1 stupid review and for I don’t know how many month went on a freaking vendetta attacking everything he could and eventually got told by Google to knock it off. He was almost going to scrap his ch, he considered twice on different instances, I think.
If I remember right, there was a recall on Xbox. There was a special power cord that Microsoft sent you and you had to throw away the old one.
I still firmly believe that very few people there actually play video games or know how a game should run or know how a console should sound. Anyreal gamer that puts a game in and sees a skipping splash screen would know there's something wrong. You'd think someone who fixes consoles FOR A LIVING would know that.

I have rebuilt hundreds of original Xboxes. Many of which have failed DVD drives. Your best course of action in the event that it's just a dirty laser lens is carefully removing the top of the DVD drive, and gently rubbing the laser with a q-tip and 90% isopropyl alcohol, and then gently dry scrubbing it with a q-tip.
