Thank you SO MUCH for this video! I’m a mom who has generally always been the “helper” on repair projects, but now I need to take the lead. My 11yo son and I used your video to walk through fixing our microwave. For $13 we now have a working appliance again - I’m so grateful we didn’t need to buy a whole new microwave!!
Thank you! You just diagnosed my microwave, and allowed me to fix it. I actually managed to fix the faulty switch, so it's working again now. But I've ordered new switches to replace the wonky one. Total cost = $8.99!! You just earned a new subscriber!
After my microwave stopped working I started shopping for a new one. That's when I realized I had a microwave/convection oven worth about $2000. I can't thank you enough for the video. I got it fixed with a fun project with my son. Thank you very much!
Thank you for the video. This fix resolved my issue. The switch was actually just loose. So didn't even need to purchase a switch. You have made me so happy. I so do appreciate you posting this video.
Thank you very much for this video. My Dacor DCM24S had this same problem. Light and fan come one, but no turntable or heat. I followed your steps and fixed it in less than an hour. In my case, the switch was not entirely defective. I tested the switch with a multimeter and found that the switch would fail if the little orange button was pushed in all the way, but it works if you let off the button a bit. All did was shave down the little orange button about 1 to 2mm so the door mechanism would not push it in all the way, and now it works! I would also like to add, for anyone doing this, be very careful when you bend the clip that is holding the switch in. I pushed too hard and snapped off the clip. I was able to re-secure the switch by wedging a small piece of wood under it, wedged between the switch and bottom panel of the microwave interior.
Worked like a charm for my Kenmore microwave! Ordered two new switches from Amazon and replaced top and middle switch and we're back to working order. Thanks so much for the tutorial! Kept this microwave out of the landfill!
On the way back from a beer store along with my cart, I picked up someones microwave oven that looked about the same power rating as mine. It was located at the curb for disposal. So I took it home, and all the parts that I needed to fix my own oven were identical and still OK in this roadside trashed oven. That included micro-switches, an AC fuse, and a thermal fuse. Once these used components were installed in my oven, it was back up and working, and still is working. Total repair cost, $0.00. However, years later, the plate rotor motor stopped working. So I took the motor apart and flipped the donut shaped magnet over 180 degrees, and then reassembled the motor. The motor was fixed and has been working ever since. The donut shaped magnet has 4 notches on both sides, but only the notches on one side are being used to lock onto the center nylon gear. Only the notches on one side were worn down, so I now just used the other side instead. Total repair cost, $0.00. This stainless steal oven of mine was a store demo unit, or so they said, and so it cost me less than $45. In truth, its keyboard was only half working. So I cleaned the keyboard electrical contacts, and the keyboard has been working ever since. This oven was manufactured in 2004 and is still running in 2019.
I'll add on here; thank you very much for this video. Our microwave exhibited this exact same behavior the weekend before I was going to leave on a business trip. Leaving my wife and toddler without a functioning microwave (and parent for a few days) would have been a real hassle. Was able to get everything fixed up and working again in an afternoon before the trip; I even had a spare switch in my basement in some old parts. Thank you so much for putting this together, I really appreciate it.
Thank you so much.. I repaired my Microwave oven with your guidance. In my case, it was a a two way switch at the same location. The terminals had got heated and the button click was not very prominent. The old switch worked intermittently, replaced it with a new one and got my oven working. I was earlier too doubting one of these switches, because my overn sometime worked well, but did know exactly, which switch is for what. My oven has three door switches, one on the top and other two at the bottom. the top is for light, the centre one is for turntable and magnatron, still don't know what is the function of the third, last one. `that is a one way switch and I found it ok using my multimeter. Really appreciate your video. Great job.
Thank you, spent $10 on switches and had it fixed in about 10 minutes, instead of $150ish on a new microwave. Wish i would have knew about this years ago.
Just wanted to thank you. I spent $5.00 on the switch and it saved me $200. I found an easier way around the security torx screws. I used a tiny flat blade screwdriver that fit up against the protruding pin and into 2 of the 6 corners.
Most wonderful, accurate and to the point tutorial. My Panasonic microwave gave out on me yesterday with same exact problem (light on, no turntable turning, no heating). I am gonna try to fix it this weekend. You are awesome man!!!✌️👍
Thank you so much for this video. I was able to fix my neighbor's LG microwave oven that they are about to throw or recycle. I am a very handy man but I will admit I don't know how to fix it and I told my neighbor. He told me just try and I've checked and seen a lot of videos regarding this problem but yours Sir is very educational and more appropriate and exact to the point.
Thank you for the amazing video. It was the exact same switch that caused the issue on my end as well. It is back to normal after replacing it. Since I already had the microwave opened, I replaced the other two switches as well for this old microwave. Your video saved me easily $300 plus the stress. Thanks again. Please continue making such amazing videos.
Thanks! I was able to fix mine with this. My bottom switch wasn't working, I was actually able to open the switch without breaking it and saw that the metal contact was not making a good enough connection to send current through. I ended up bending the contact slightly and it now makes good contact again. Put a little glue to close the switch up and the microwave works perfectly again.
I had it for about 6 years and I used it almost everyday, so I thought it was about time to buy a new one, but just before I buy a new one I still want to check on RUclips. So I found your video and learned, so I ordered a part, 3 days later i replaced a bottom switch and now it works again. You saved me the money to buy a new microwave. Thanks
Thank you! My switch ended up being fine in terms of continuity, but I noticed that the spring was shot, so the door latching mechanism couldn't engage the switch. Finding an appliance store was the hard part 😄
Wonderful explanation and visuals showing the basics of microwave switches and how to access and diagnose them. My microwave was a different make (Whirlpool) and model but the general layout and concept was similar. I replaced one switch for $8 and my eight year old microwave works like new. Saved me time and money:) Thank you!
Thank you, sir! My microwave did this this past week, and I decided before calling a repairman or considering buying a new microwave to check it out here. Well, $17 and 2 hours later ($10 for the switch, $7 for the key at Harbor Frieght to unlock the security screws) I now have a working microwave oven!
Just done very well. Steps and instructions done with clarity. If you need to change a switch on your microwave and you can’t do it after(while) watching this then you really need to take it to a professional because there’s no other video that can help you. Good job poster.
Thank you, Mr TightWad! These were the same symptoms that my microwave was exhibiting so I followed your instructions and BAM! $5 later mine is fixed! Mine is a different brand but it's basically the same inside. It was such an easy fix. The hardest part was getting the case off. I bought a security torx bit which fit all but 2 of the screws (?) I was able to loosen one of them with channel locks but the last one I had to saw a slot with a hack saw. It was worth the effort to fix it myself for next to no cost! Thanks again for the excellent video!
Thank you for making this video. I used your technique to remove the outer safety screws and for removing/testing/replacing the door switch; which solved my problem. Much appreciated!
Thanks, this video immediately identified the broken component which I replaced. There was a door switch on the bottom but the actual culprit was the switch on the top. I disconnecting the wires from the switch and checking for continuity/door operation before removing the switch. By the way, the bad switch was easily identified even without a meter because the actuator tab did not extend out of the switch housing as it should.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! You just saved me $500!!! I, YES- me myself and I - just repaired my microwave! I changed out the door switch, but the problem remained. I noticed the top switch connectors looked funky. I swapped out that switch as well, and we are rocking and rolling! I have an LG LMH2016ST
I’m back. I watched like 30 more vids and came bk to yours as my main reference. I opened my microwave and found the capacitor had a protective box covering and I didn’t know how to (nor did I want to) remove it. No other video had this box blocking the capacitor- I guess mine is super high tech (??). It was tempting to just remove the door switch but I used safety & refrained. I took it to repair shop and it cost $125 to replace the door switch and some wires per the repairman (I don’t know if the wires were really damaged but I obliged). I know I can buy a new microwave (and I did, several actually but none compared to this one), so It was worth it for me because I love my microwave!
Great concise and safety oriented Video. The only thing I wish you'd have done was test the new Switch, so we could see what happens to the Good Switch when tested. My microwave is a cheapie Hamilton-Beach Walmart one. Everything seems to work, turntable, light, etc. except it doesn't heat. Took the top off, did as you said, discharged the condenser. There were two components, about the size of a Penny, screwed with 2 screws to the metal frame inside like grounding it, with two terminals sticking up and ganged together with wiring. On one of the terminals, on one component, was burnt, still attached, but noticeably burnt. Don't know what these are, but being burnt, I would say would be the best place to start. The 2 components look like some kind of Diodes. I did a continuity check across the two terminals on the one Diode, and there was continuity between both. Will check the other diode and see if there is continuity between both terminals and will probably give me a clue to see if the burnt one is bad. These could be some type of double fuse system. Great Video, you did a Good job. Thanks.
Was able to fix our microwave today with a $6 part-vs $600 for a replacement! Thank you so much for the excellent video-we never could have done it without you. I called Kitchen Aid and they said it was a "throw-away appliance" and would have to buy a new one, So happy!
thank you for the video. This helped me fix my GE profile microwave - the bottom (primary interlock switch) turned out to be the culprit that was causing multiple problems
Thank you for this video. I was able to fix our microwave and save a great deal of money. $7.00 spent saved hundreds. I also did the technique to remove screws and it was very easy to remove cover.
Dude? Phenomenal...All I needed to know was no rotating turntable and no heating and you solved it...easy fix for our 2008 LG...still might get a new one, but very glad to be able to take our time and actually have a working microwave. I replaced all the switches for $25, then noticed the non-working one...so have 2 extra now...I'll eventually give this one to a needy family...or we'll procrastinate and keep using this one...thanks again!
I had a “repairman” come out and he told me I needed a new turntable motor and magnetron, $700. Cost $95 to have him come out and misdiagnosis it. So I jumped on RUclips and saw this. Followed these instructions and $5.65 and some personal time and it fixed it. Adding just in case someone has my model - My microwave was a GE Advantium oven combo and the switch was on right if you’re facing the unit’s front and it was the lower switch too.
This video is just what I needed. I had an intermittent problem. It would stop heating and turning while the time continued. The spade for the uninsulated connector has signs of arcing so it may have failed due to the poor connection. The switch definitely burned out.
Thank you. I'm pretty sure the door latch switch is either going bad or was stuck from dirt. Because I just poked the outside & it started working again. But when it inevitably goes out I'll try here first instead of just getting another even though it's just an inexpensive freestanding model.
Thank you very much TightWad mine was the primary it was broke inside you save me big bucks My LG was 15 years old when it quit now it has a new life thanks
Adding my thanks to you for this video! Over 10 years ago I replaced the magnetron thanks to another guy. You helped me out and saved $ because I was thinking maybe the magnetron again. Replaced the switch and we're back in business!
Bang on diagnosis but with mine it was the white plastic retaining part that holds the switch at 90° that had broken. Glue and small splint sorted the job. Cheers
Thanks for the video!!!! I did’t want to buy another switch although they are not expensive. I just ended up fixing the inside of the switch and works like brand new!!!
Thanks! Bottom switch stuck on mine, tested bad with the meter, took it out clicked it a couple of times, tested it again and it read okay. Put it back in and it's working fine now. I'll probably pick up a switch to have on hand...or cannibalize the next comparable model I see curb shopping. LOL
Thanks a lot. My wolf microwave was not turning and microwave was running no heat and turntable was not spinning. I was thinking to change turntable motor but your video gave me new angel and I checked switch found conector was out put conector back and all good 😂 Thanks for great video
My GE microwave is only 4 years only and it stopped working as the video described... I tried everything then I happened to lift the door and found it sloppy and loose on the hinge pins. It looks as if a spacer has broken on the bottom hinge pin that made the switches not meet correctly. I placed a small zip tie around that bottom hinge pin and I'm back in business! 😂
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!! You saved us from having to buy a new microwave or bringing someone else into our home. This was the issue. It was an easy fix for our LG Microwave. Your video was very detailed.
Too funny yesterday I replaced a fuse for my friends microwave because he had no power. When finished he was so excited that it fixed the power…so we thought :). After I left he went to use it and bam it didn’t work. Tomorrow I’ll be going back to replace the door switch and this time I’ll do a better test before I leave. Thanks for the great videos
Found that one of my switches weren’t working. No continuity indicator when I test it. Nor that the black switch was popping up. Brought 2 of the switches on eBay for 10$! Thank you!!
Thank you. mine is an Emerson and the switch is the top one. Fortunatly once I removed the switch I was able to take it apart and cleaned it. I test it with my voltage meter before I installed it. The whole process took me 30 minutes. Thank you.
This is great, I appreciate the video I was able to fix my microwave myself and save a bunch of money. Only thing, I didn't realize how sensitive the clip is that holds in the door switch. I pushed it in to rotate the switch and it snapped right off.
I'm having this same issue, but it is intermittent. I'm going to troubleshoot this as soon as I can. BTW, the cap doesn't have power because of the bleed resistor that goes to the metal body.
You are amazing! I hope you can answer a question. Since you opened the microwave oven before for the same issue, how long did it take to stop working again (as u had to do it again now)? I hope you can answer it. Thanks!!
Fajar Shahzad Mine lasted about a year the first time. However, this time I noticed one of my spade connector wires looked a little melted so I replaced it. I haven’t had any issues since then.
@@TightWadDIY I followed u, same problem. BUT the switch is perfectly fine. Does that mean that I should give up on my patient? 😥 P.S. there were no burnt wires either
This worked awesome on my expensive Dacore microwave. It cost me $6.95 for the part on Amazon. It works great! Probably saved me $695. Thanks TightWadDIY. you are awesome
The middle micro switch, (NC COM ) when I test it with my Multimeter I get a reading when door is closed and open. Do I have a bad micro switch? What does the middle micro switch control? Replaced the micro switch it does the same thing When I remove the wire from the com terminal on the switch the meter shows OL wire on shows reading closed and open .Thanks in advance.
Great videos sir! I thought this one diagnosed it however in rewatching it, the problem is not identical. The microwave does not turn on. The light AND the turntable operate, but no function. Sound like a fuse or a door relay problem to you?
I found a faulty switch with your video..thanks! The switch actually worked to some level...the spring inside it was shot so it would not return to the NO position. Had to play with the micro switch to find the fault.
Appreciate the video. The home we purchased has a Wolf brand microwave and it has the same symptoms. Do you suppose this brand is similar in that the bottom switch could be the problem?
Thanks so much for the video. With the assistance of your video, I was able to fix my Wolf microwave. I found it interesting that some of the same components (Sharp) in your microwave are the same ones in mine. It makes you wonder if there is any real quality difference between the brands.
@TightWadDIY, do you know if a KW3A switch can be used universally regardless of the numbers next to the NC/NO on the switch? The switches in my Kenmore microwave indicate NC2 and NO4, but for the life of me I can't find those replacements anywhere! Thanks.
NC2 and NO4 means Normally Closed and Normally Open. Those are switch settings. I’m not sure about the KW3A. I’m not an appliance repair person so I don’t know all of the details.
4 years later still saving families money one microwave at a time! I’ve had mine since 2004 and it gets to live another day. Thank you!
Great! I’m glad to hear it helped you!
On mine the panel works but no light or turntable or heat. Could this be my issue too?

Awesome video. Lower switch was my issue just like you said. Thanks for taking the time to make these great instructional videos!

Thank you for this video. I was able to fix our microwave and save a great deal of money. $7.00 spent saved hundreds. I also did the technique to remove screws and it was very easy to remove cover.
That’s great! I’m glad you were able to get it fixed!
That’s great! I’m glad you were able to get it back up and running!
Sorry you were taken advantage of. It drives me nuts! I’m glad you were able to get yours fixed by yourself.
Thanks for that lower door switch. It solved the problem (most of the other guys point to the fuse).
This video is just what I needed. I had an intermittent problem. It would stop heating and turning while the time continued. The spade for the uninsulated connector has signs of arcing so it may have failed due to the poor connection. The switch definitely burned out.
PckyEatr I’m glad you were able to get it fixed. I highly suggest replacing the spade.
thank you so much for posting this! This was just what the doctor ordered, fixed my microwave for 7 bucks!
Nicola Greco That’s awesome! I’m glad you were able to get yours fixed!
Yaaaaay! Thank you for this very helpful video! One switch bought on Amazon for less than $6, and my microwave works again.
Fantastic!
Thank you. I'm pretty sure the door latch switch is either going bad or was stuck from dirt. Because I just poked the outside & it started working again.
But when it inevitably goes out I'll try here first instead of just getting another even though it's just an inexpensive freestanding model.
Yes! It’s always better to fix it if it’s a cheap part!
Wow. Thanks for the video. I knew it was the bottom switch but could not figure out how to remove it. The video saved me. Thanks again!
You are welcome! I’m glad it worked for you too!
Thank you so much! I was going to just toss the thing and now its fixed for $8. Seriously....you're the best.
That’s great! I’m glad you were able to fix it. If you just want to spend some money, I can send you my Paypal!
I am hoping to fix mine this week. I really hope it works. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you very much TightWad mine was the primary it was broke inside you save me big bucks My LG was 15 years old when it quit now it has a new life thanks
I’m glad you got it fixed!
Great video. It took me longer to get to the appliance parts store and back than it did to install the new switch. Thank you!
Adding my thanks to you for this video! Over 10 years ago I replaced the magnetron thanks to another guy. You helped me out and saved $ because I was thinking maybe the magnetron again. Replaced the switch and we're back in business!
Jesse Maines That’s great! I’m glad you found it helpful.
Bang on diagnosis but with mine it was the white plastic retaining part that holds the switch at 90° that had broken. Glue and small splint sorted the job. Cheers
Glad you were able to get it fixed!
With the help of your video, I was able to fix my GE microwave lower switch problem. . Thanks a lot!
That’s great! I’m glad it worked for you too!
Thanks so much, all I did was play with the switch a little and it worked
That’s great! I’d go ahead and order one just in case.
Tysm you basically fixed my microwave amazing video and thanks for pointing out the step by step it’s was amazing
You’re welcome. I’m glad it worked for you too!
Thanks for the video!!!! I did’t want to buy another switch although they are not expensive. I just ended up fixing the inside of the switch and works like brand new!!!
Nice work!
Thank you for your video. It's was exactly the problem of my microwave. Waiting for the switch to come in. Thank a lot! 👍
Great! Hopefully it works great when you get the switch!
@@TightWadDIY It sure does work now and thanks to you! :D
@@fraisiperles9257 Great!
Thank you so much! May God bless you for taking the time to do this video to help others!
You’re welcome!
thank you so much. I had the exact same problem and your video helped fix it in 5 minutes.
Great!
Thanks! Your video saved me cash and kept our microwave out of the landfill.
Jeremy Marshik I’m glad you were able to get it fixed!
Thanks! Bottom switch stuck on mine, tested bad with the meter, took it out clicked it a couple of times, tested it again and it read okay. Put it back in and it's working fine now. I'll probably pick up a switch to have on hand...or cannibalize the next comparable model I see curb shopping. LOL
I’m glad you were able to get it working again!
Thanks a lot. My wolf microwave was not turning and microwave was running no heat and turntable was not spinning.
I was thinking to change turntable motor but your video gave me new angel and I checked switch found conector was out put conector back and all good 😂
Thanks for great video
Excellent explanation and video.
Very helpful.
Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
My instincts have been verified. Thank you.
Great!
Nice job!
Thanks!!!! It fixed my over the range microwave too! Thank you for sharing 👍🏼

Great! I’m glad you found it!

Nice! Hopefully the door switch solves the issue.
@@TightWadDIY sadly it did not. So I’m at a loss. For now my friend bought a microwave for the counter
Found that one of my switches weren’t working. No continuity indicator when I test it. Nor that the black switch was popping up. Brought 2 of the switches on eBay for 10$! Thank you!!
I’m glad you were able to get yours fixed too!
Good job sir. Nice tutorial.😊
Thanks and welcome
Thank you. mine is an Emerson and the switch is the top one. Fortunatly once I removed the switch I was able to take it apart and cleaned it. I test it with my voltage meter before I installed it. The whole process took me 30 minutes. Thank you.
bosanovaboy Great work! Glad you were able to get it fixed.
Great job explaining.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for this video, works beautifully, the part was 2.33 with tax! Easy fix!
That’s great! I’m glad you were able to fix it and that is super cheap!
Thank you for posting this. The bottom switch on mine just needed to make a better contact. Problem fixed for $0.00 and 5 minutes. I appreciate it =)

Thanks! I had that same issue. Bad lower switch
I’m glad it worked for you too!
This is great, I appreciate the video I was able to fix my microwave myself and save a bunch of money. Only thing, I didn't realize how sensitive the clip is that holds in the door switch. I pushed it in to rotate the switch and it snapped right off.
J Gunn Oh no! Were you able to rig it up to make it work?
Thanks for the excellent and detailed tutorial!
You’re welcome.
Thanks for the Video! The button on the top switch was worn completely off.
W Rigg I’m glad you were able to get yours fixed. You don’t realize how often you use the microwave until it’s broken!
Just saved me 1090.00. Works great. Thanks
That’s great! Just send me 10% and we will call it even!
Did all of your buttons work fine? And the unit would turn on just no heat or turn table spinning? Before replacing the lower micro switch?
Correct.
Thanks man
I'm having this same issue, but it is intermittent. I'm going to troubleshoot this as soon as I can.
BTW, the cap doesn't have power because of the bleed resistor that goes to the metal body.
Good help, fixed my microwave for only 11 bucks
That’s great news!
@@TightWadDIY Thanks for your reply! I am gonna do mine tomorrow, hope it works for me too.
@@TightWadDIY I followed u, same problem. BUT the switch is perfectly fine. Does that mean that I should give up on my patient? 😥
P.S. there were no burnt wires either
Fajar Shahzad did yours have the same symptoms as mine?
@@TightWadDIY YES!!
Do any of those switches work for the convection part of a microwave not heating? Or is that something completely different. Thanks
This worked awesome on my expensive Dacore microwave. It cost me $6.95 for the part on Amazon. It works great! Probably saved me $695. Thanks TightWadDIY. you are awesome
Brian Weiss That’s great! I’m glad you were able to get it fixed!
Thank you! I just fixed a 1997 Kenmore microwave - in 2024 - for $7.90. Woohoo!
Yes! That’s great!
Thank you for the clear video. What is the name of this type of switch?
It’s a door switch.
I’m confused. Please state your issue.
This is a great video. I followed your advice and everything worked great. Thank you very much for such a clear and helpful post.

I found a faulty switch with your video..thanks! The switch actually worked to some level...the spring inside it was shot so it would not return to the NO position. Had to play with the micro switch to find the fault.
Dave C. I’m glad you found your issue and were able to get it fixed. Be sure to subscribe!
So helpful, thank you so much!
My pleasure!
Appreciate the video. The home we purchased has a Wolf brand microwave and it has the same symptoms. Do you suppose this brand is similar in that the bottom switch could be the problem?
ranmangolf I would say it’s very likely.
Thanks so much for the video. With the assistance of your video, I was able to fix my Wolf microwave. I found it interesting that some of the same components (Sharp) in your microwave are the same ones in mine. It makes you wonder if there is any real quality difference between the brands.
Thanks! The switch fixed our microwave.
That’s great! I’m glad it worked for you too!
Perfect. Thanks! $5 switch or $1100 convection microwave oven? TightWads win. FYI - On my GE unit, it was the top latch switch.
Yes! I’m glad it worked for you too. Thanks for the info about the GE.
You are my hero!!! Saved us $700.00
Yay! Glad it worked for you!
