      Indeed. For me part of the allure is that you only have 36 shots on a roll. That forces you to be frugal and much more thoughtful. With film I think you tend to make pictures rather than take pictures.

    • @TheRobertSt
      @TheRobertSt 7 лет назад +18

      MrMfloor Yes there is: the photos will last for 'ever'. Take a digital Photo and it will be gone within 10-15 years. Take a photo with an analogue and it may last over a 1000 years. Do you have all of your digital photos taken 25 years ago? Don't think so.

      The archival quality is more along the lines of 100 years under proper storage conditions, not 1000 years. Also, that is for silver based medium, and in the colour development process, all the silver is replaced with dye, so again, the archival quality of colour film doesn't quite hit even the more reasonable 100 year mark.

    aperture = the amount of light that enters the camera
    shutter speed = how long that light is let in for.

      I believe that most digital cameras have manual modes that you can adjust these settings (aperture, shutter speed, etc) to experiment with before you start shooting expensive film.

    • @MrPhotographerDude
      @MrPhotographerDude 7 лет назад +13

      If you really want to learn, buy a hand held meter and shoot fully manual. I feel you really learn the relationship between ISO, Shutter speed and Aperture.

      @@marianolopez101 haha it's possible but I mean, being a photographer that specializes in film/instant film isn't that wild of an idea. I know for a fact that many photographers freelance solely using film. a lot of people want their special event captured both digitally, and on the film they look at all of their older relative's special events on. so like, hiring a polaroid instant film photographer for your wedding isn't completely unheard of.

    There's just something so special about photographs...I remember dumpster diving, and finding people's old 35mm photos of pets and family - and crying. You can see the happiness that - or imagine the happiness that those quick moments in time brought someone - the memories that it served. That's why I love photography personally, because I always remember how I was feeling when I took a photo, and I love that sense of finality a photo has. Everything was still for a split second in time, nothing changed, and it's there for us to see, forever. Beautiful video - outstanding.

    I think I agree with many of the comments on here. This is a beautiful story and it is wonderful to see such young people getting so involved in film. Also, from a technical point of view they explained it clearly, simply and accurately. I think the girl said near the start that she always winds on the film after she takes a shot. I guess this is so she is always ready to take the next one. I would suggest this is not really a good idea as it leaves the shutter springs under tension and over a period of time they can weaken which will affect the shutter sped accuracy. Probably best to wind on just before the next shot. But, I absolutely loved this video and enjoyed seeing the fun and excitement being demonstrated. Well done guys.

    • @WildWeRoam
      @WildWeRoam  8 лет назад +5

      Thanks for the comment and for the tip! We actually heard that from a few other comments after shooting this video and have since switched to winding right before taking a photo--which is better for the camera but also leads to a lot of moments where we forget that the camera isn't wound yet, so it takes some getting used to I guess! But it's nice to be doing things properly and taking care of the camera so I'm sure we'll get used to it soon!! Hope your having a nice weekend : )

    This video is absolutely beautiful! I shoot film too from time to time, and I love the aspects of it that you two have highlighted in this story. Plus the aspect of sharing this passion and learning with another person seems to make it a truly unique experience. I'm curious about the type of film you've used since the pics looks quite contrasty and vivid (though where I live I "only" have access to 3 makes of film, Kodak 200,Fuji 200 and illford black and white 100).Anyway great work and storytelling, subscribed right away!

      Thanks for watching and subscribing! We've been using fujicolor 200 or 100 a lot lately but would really like to start experimenting with other options soon : ) so if you have any absolute favorites please let us know. It might look more contrasty than what your photos look like because of how the colors shift when they get scanned, edited, and uploaded--basically we just try and keep things as real and good looking as possible but its tricky with youtube and all these programs ; ) Can't wait to hear what you think of the next photography video we shoot in the coming weeks!

    This is one of my favorite videos on RUclips, it's simple, has great photography and looks good, music is great and it's just a normal video that isn't even trying to be like everyone else, it's like they took the camera, went out and filmed whatever they found interesting. This video inspired me a few months ago to dig up my dad's old 35mm Nikon N2020 he received for his high school graduation circa 1987, buy a few rolls of film, and give it my best shot. A few months later, my friends are beginning to take an interest in film and I am teaching them things that I learned from this video. Your channel, and especially this video, will always inspire me to take the best photographs that I can and share them with good people. I have now shot everything from hikes to street photography in New York City to simply documenting good times with good friends, and I will always be grateful to have gotten my start from this video. grain and noise is the same thing :)

    • @TristanLawrence1
      @TristanLawrence1 7 лет назад +50

      EdBareff no it is not. Noise is the lack light hitting the sensor on digital cameras. Grain is the particles found in the film type. Grain is always the same because of the film type. Noise is never the same, and you never want noise for professional photos. Grain can be used professionally.

    • @EdBareff
      @EdBareff 7 лет назад +6

      thanks, good to know! the result is similar, right? first comes from film and second from digital.

    • @neilspector9221
      @neilspector9221 7 лет назад +3

      Film is continuous grain whereas digital noise is created when the sensors gain light is trying to add luminance to compensate for the low light levels. IMHO digital noise is ugly and film grain is beautiful.

    • @stevea5985

  • @highpowerentertainment2362

    If you're starting off, start with black and white film. It helps because you learn how to use your lighting, contrast, grain, and it's a huge help. If you can develop your own film do it. It's a stressing process buts it's honestly my favorite part.

    I lost thousands of family photos in a house fire going back to the First World War. I had never thought digital pictures looked as good as film anyway so a couple years ago I got a Cannon A1 and was given my grandmother's Pentax P3 today. Someone commented there's just something about film and like vinyl records I couldn't agree more. It's nice to see young people discover the joy of things forgotten. Modern technology isn't always better.

    This video makes me feel like a dinosaur... I have boxes of photographs and some old film laying around but much prefer digital... cost cost cost. Cool though I guess, it seems like ancient technology to some, but I think most ppl were still shooting through about 2002 or so... the early digitals 99-02 were bad, convenient, but bad. Even disposables were better. IT would be cool to see somebody shooting on a .6 mp 640x480 digital camera! "and this is how you oversharpen in paint shop pro!" If you are truly interested, def find somebody with a darkroom...that's part of the fun and process! Never had my own, but we had one in middle school/high school in the 90s.

    I loved watching your face when you were picking up your film once it got developed and going through them, it made me nostalgic for the first time I developed my film!

    When you're focusing, really try to move your focusing hand so your palm is under the lens, cradling it.
    The way you're doing looks so cack-handed and doesn't support the camera well so especially at low shutter speeds you'll be introducing camera shake.

      Thank you so much for the tip Matthew!! Will try out that new hand position out next time I take the camera out :)

      and keep your elbows in to add support, should be able to rest them on your sides for very slow shutter speeds.

    Alright I’m a broke college student. Does anyone know where I can buy a moderately priced film camera? Also what kind of camera or company do you suggest? I’m taking literally any suggestions. Help a girl out 😭

      Keh.com might have some stuff, cheap minoltas on ebay are usually not much, otherwise vintage clothing stores sometimes have really cheap ones! ---Lou

      I'm a broke college student too. Get a Minolta SRT-101 on eBay for $50 with a lens.

    It's not just that you're shooting film. You guys have this awesome vibe where you seem to be all existing in a film world! I don't know if it makes sense, but this vibe had me smiling all through the video!

      Hi Ankur, thanks so much for the nice comment! Maybe its the color grading? We use hunters alexa lut on raw magic latern footage from the 5d3? Or maybe its that we usually shoot at golden hour or early in the morning? Who knows! ---Lou
