Mark has his own way of articulating if he doesn’t like something and it’s by saying: “this is too sweet for me or I don’t particularly care for this or I can see how someone would like this but it’s not my favorite.”
Hi Mark. The pureed vegetable is called callalloo. It is made from the leaves of the taro plant (also called dasheen bush), okra and Scotch bonnet peppers - all stewed in coconut milk. Trinidad and Tobago's population is multi-ethnic, with groups of people who trace their origins to West Africa, India, China, Portugal, Syria, England and elsewhere, as well as the original Amerindian community. Our cuisine is a melting pot of influences from all of these groups. The meal that you had reflects this diversity. The callalloo is West African in origin and the curry comes from India.
Mark, to take such pleasure in the food of so many ethnic cultures as you do reveals a heart that joyfully embraces people and cultures that many would tend to overlook. You are truly an ambassador of culinary goodwill! Wonderful video!
He is a natural at story telling and his missionary background lends itself to his remarkable ability to blend so effortless into a variety of food culture. He is humble and he keeps a smile which is contagious. Good for you Mark

He seems like the kind of guy that doesn’t like to say anything bad. Even if something isn’t his favorite, he’ll still find something good to say about it.
Guillermo, what you just said amounts to nothing more than a difference of opinion. Five people could share the same pizza he’s eating and you can get four or five different opinions. He liked something more than you did, you like something else more. No big deal.
This made me so happy! I've been watching Mark's videos for years and love them. But as a native NY'er, it was so much fun watching him eat my fav foods and express my same opinions of them. If you read Mark's description box he says that the pizza place imports their ingredients from Italy hence the $ 31 price tag , pizza looks delicious and so does the food from Trinidad
Mark the green dish is called Callaloo,, it’s one of native dishes in Trinidad & Tobago. It’s made of ochro dasheen bush & coconut milk . Glad you enjoyed it-:))👍👍
why because i don't want to spend 31 dollars on a pizza? a pizza should be no more than 10-15 dollars.. at most.its not like its a fancy restaurant . its just a takeaway pizza. no matter how good the taste i wouldn't pay that for a pizza unless its fine dining then it makes sence. you can find much cheaper pizza in japan and switzerland wich are already expensive countries. a decent pizza in naples italy is around 4-5 euros. thats 6 USD
you have to take into account the high rent in new york. New york is one of the most expensive city to live, so the price need to be seen relative to that, not just in absolute value.
tokyo and hong kong has higher rents or almost similar than NYC and you can find cheap food in these two cities.. good luck finding cheap restaurants in NYC. anything less than 10 dollars would be pure luck. 31 dollars is extremley expensive for a pizza. its even more expensive than norway.
tega banega I lived in Tokyo before, and yes, you could find cheap food. But remember, you have to see the size of this pizza. A normal medium size pizza, which is much smaller than this one, is like $20 in Japan.
They're selling $31 pizza's because they sell $5 slices so they're not super busy all day every day. If their pies were to cost $25, then by getting a pie you're getting 3 slices for free (8-5=3)
Mark is a great food reviewer. I enjoy all his videos. And they are useful - thanks to his Taiwan series, I just had a fabulous trip eating my way around Taipei. Thanks Mark & Ying!
it's called callaloo Mark and it's from Trinidad, they make theirs like that. The Jamaican version is different, it is more like sauteed spinach. When you get to Miami we'll get you some real Jamaican food boss!
I love callaloo. The dasheen leaves, pumpkin, okra, green seasoning, and coconut milk all goes together so well. And it compliments so many dishes very nicely. Hey Mark! I love your videos. That pizza looks amazing. I worked at Pepe's in New haven from 1984-1998 and would love to know if you have ever had it and what you thought of it. Keep up the great work!

Well was that from a store or street vendor? Also I'm going to quote an excerpt from an article on the cost some street cart vendors pay the city just to have the privilege to sell from a certain spot. "Call it the half-million-dollar hot dog cart. Mohammad Mastafa of Astoria, Queens, has to sell almost that much in drinks and snacks annually to break even on the pushcart he owns at Fifth Avenue and East 62nd Street near the Central Park Zoo. He pays the city’s parks department $289,500 a year just for the right to operate his single cart there." www.nytimes.com/2013/09/05/nyregion/the-six-figure-price-tag-for-selling-a-two-dollar-hot-dog.html

exactly ive eaten at cheap pizza places in NYC and expensive. This place is one of the best if you want the best pizza in the world. Joes in Greenwich village is amazing too and cheaper.
I remember when I was a lot younger as a student at Brooklyn College, I rode my bike or walked by this place dozens of times on the way to the subway without knowing that it was god-tier status for pizza. And I believe at some point I stopped in and got a slice, which I'm sure I enjoyed, but this was almost 20 years ago. It's in the middle of an Orthodox Jewish neighborhood, so you wouldn't necessarily expect to have a world-class pizza joint sitting there.
There is a significant East Indian population in the Caribbean who were brought over by the British from India as laborers. Ditto Africans. V.S. Naipaul is a famous Trinidadian author with Indian roots. His book of short stories, 'Miguel Street,' is set in Trinidad right after WW II, and is a very interesting, fun read about Indian-Trinidadian culture of that time. In one of the stories, Naipaul muses about ingredients mysteriously crossing cultural barriers despite different racial groups keeping to themselves.
Wow, Thanks guys! Just looking up Naipaul on Wikipedia. KM Y - Thanks for the lead on that specific piece of literature. You got me curious - I'll have to go find that book at the local library one of these weekends. Ms.Keysha: East Indians in South America too? That's news to me! I was surprised enough to know that the Japanese mass-emigrated to South American countries like Peru, but didn't know about the East Indians.
snowywinter9 what part of the world you live in in that you don't know there is East Indian south America most of Caribbean country there is East Indian
Watch his very first video, that's who he really is. He is now a host of a very respected channel. I like this guy. Also those complaining about price? I would pay $31 to eat a pizza right now in New York City without a shadow of a doubt. I would rather eat that there than my £10 pizza where i live, it has to be experienced. Also all tourist traps are expensive, its how it is.
No man, all food is good, unless it's badly prepared. Just like Mark, I have my preferences, but I find everything equally interesting. It just sounds ridiculous to me to like one thing and dislike the other. Frozen, artificial stuff can be really bad, but if you pluck a ripe fruit from a tree and don't like it, there's something wrong with you, not the other way around.
Mark looking at u in Brooklyn, an eating the Caribbean food...well it's Curry chicken...pumpkin an calaloo that's the green veges...Yes I am a true Trini...an that meal u bought we here in Trinidad makes it on a Sunday special but...Macaroni pie is a must that goes with the calaloo...An it's normally make with dasheen bush..ochro...pigtail...crab pumpkin....an yes it's puree to get it like a soup....very tasty food we have in Trinidad....Mattee from in Trinidad in the Caribbean❤❤🙏🙏
stsz12 he didn't even try to coat the pizza with equal amounts of basil, he didn't even try, he did a lazy job like all New Yorkers so arrogant and lazy
Here in central Illinois, about 2.5 hours from Chicago, we have places that sell 16 inch gourmet home made pizza with all the toppings, for $16 to $24. And one place I go to has 1/2 price pizza on Sunday. It's thin crust, hand made, with top of the line fresh toppings, with home made sauce and crust. A couple of the places have even won awards for their pizza, and it is some of the best pizza I ever had. So if you get it on Sunday when it is 1/2 price a 16 inch pizza is only $8 to $12 dollars.
Hi Mark, I have lived in New York City for many years, I have seen and bought a hole pizza pie looks a lot better and pay much cheaper . In my opinion that pizza parlor is ripping people off. your regular viewer,
idk why.. its satisfying and annoying at the same time when you nearly bug out your eyes for the food reaction lol but really nice video sir .. love from indonesia
When you use the best quality ingredients cost of goods goes up, and when you make one of best pizzas in New York and probably the world, you can charge 31 dollars.
they buy at a wholesale rate for all product including "artisanal" cheeses;the biggestexpense is rent and they own the building;they charge that silly price because marketing works: you are willing to pay $31for something that costs far less and is no better than many a NYC pizza..;as for skill, after anyone cooks 500 pies they got it down; do you think the place is gonna shut down when he drops dead?
"artisanal" products here are cheese, and the whole price for the "best' does not warrant a $31 dollar pizza; anyone can make a great pizza, there is nothing special or magical about the process....do it enough times and you get pretty good at the process....i make my own pasta/pizza/and i cook really well and i know plenty of people that cook as well as me, and better...no other training other than hard work and practice; most people can "do it" , perhaps you should at least try...it's not hard or mystical, just work, which you may not be acquainted with(hence your position) The thing is, you do not have a standard for a "pizza", no one does, but i know a great or even good pizza does not cost 31 dollars...that's marketing, for dupes, like you!

And I believe at some point I stopped in and got a slice, which I'm sure I enjoyed, but this was almost 20 years ago. It's in the middle of an Orthodox Jewish neighborhood, so you wouldn't necessarily expect to have a world-class pizza joint sitting there.
That Trinidad style Caribbean food looks awfully close to Indian food.
snowywinter9 yes it does because Trinidad is mostly West Indian so they have similar food.
In one of the stories, Naipaul muses about ingredients mysteriously crossing cultural barriers despite different racial groups keeping to themselves.
snowywinter9 that's because there are a lot of East Indians that live in Trinidad as well as several other Caribbean and South American nations.
Lmfao ain’t catching me slipping for $31 I go around the block catch a pie for $18
Taste it I 90% chance you wouldn't say that again after
@@jackpops food can only be so good.
Mark is high right?
I like to think he smokes in eats his way around the world. He's a hero of mine.
$31 for a pizza!!! You people in NY are damn crazy to pay that for a pizza!
That’s only for that one place lol
Why does he go for a small nap after the first bite? 😂😂
I don't trust anyone that always likes everything.
Joseph Payne Yup, I personally believe these foodie people are bold face lying
Lol
No man, all food is good, unless it's badly prepared. Just like Mark, I have my preferences, but I find everything equally interesting. It just sounds ridiculous to me to like one thing and dislike the other. Frozen, artificial stuff can be really bad, but if you pluck a ripe fruit from a tree and don't like it, there's something wrong with you, not the other way around.
Maybe he doesn't feature places he doesn't like?
This guy is too fake and not always honest.
$31 is expensive for a pizza!
I can feel your enthusiasm!
When you go to New York the conversion rate is 50%, you will need twice as much money or more to buy everything.
Ummmm... that would be 100%.
@11:38 That green vegetable is called callaloo in Trinidad.
Mark looking at u in Brooklyn, an eating the Caribbean food...well it's Curry chicken...pumpkin an calaloo that's the green veges...Yes I am a true Trini...an that meal u bought we here in Trinidad makes it on a Sunday special but...Macaroni pie is a must that goes with the calaloo...An it's normally make with dasheen bush..ochro...pigtail...crab pumpkin....an yes it's puree to get it like a soup....very tasty food we have in Trinidad....Mattee from in Trinidad in the Caribbean❤❤🙏🙏
for $31, the man could at least put a bit more basil on it...
stsz12 he didn't even try to coat the pizza with equal amounts of basil, he didn't even try, he did a lazy job like all New Yorkers so arrogant and lazy
Every time he eats his body be like here we go again " bend dammit bend"
Here in central Illinois, about 2.5 hours from Chicago, we have places that sell 16 inch gourmet home made pizza with all the toppings, for $16 to $24. And one place I go to has 1/2 price pizza on Sunday. It's thin crust, hand made, with top of the line fresh toppings, with home made sauce and crust. A couple of the places have even won awards for their pizza, and it is some of the best pizza I ever had. So if you get it on Sunday when it is 1/2 price a 16 inch pizza is only $8 to $12 dollars.
$31 for cheese and tomato sause !!
Ugh I forgot, this is america.
k. Hajji No, that’s only New York. Everything is expensive there. Pizza is much cheaper in other American cities.
Maz Da i hope though 👍
@@Jondav95 Pizza is garbage in other cities.
This is the arguably the best pizza in NY.
Is not the pizza is the quality. You could paid for Honda engine or a Ferrari Engine.
Come in Italiaaa to eat the original one. Btw that pizza is not that bad.
Sono italiano pure io ma questo mi sembra un pó il marco togni d'america
Mark your the man bro from Houston Texas keep making badass videos God's good!!
Hi Mark, I have lived in New York City for many years, I have seen and bought a hole pizza pie looks a lot better and pay much cheaper . In my opinion that pizza parlor is ripping people off.
your regular viewer,
I’m a lifelong NYCer and this is a ripoff!
It’s a good slice but they’re overpriced. Many good pizza places in NY for cheap
$31 is a RIPOFF!
Nope.
Your food tours are nice to watch.
I love his videos but he looks like a lunatic while eating food sometimes - 5:26
fake face helps to make more views ;)
Hold ur water...Thats his Hook!
😂😂😂😂😂
Lol
Tomas but not as much likes lol
idk why.. its satisfying and annoying at the same time
when you nearly bug out your eyes for the food reaction lol
but really nice video sir .. love from indonesia
Amos T. Agreed
i'm strictly dumpling fan and your channel was in the proposition on the side. thanks for this video and the laos food tour.
All I see is a pizza bread , sauce , pepperoni , cheese and basil . No need for it to be $ 31 no matter how good you're making it.
When you use the best quality ingredients cost of goods goes up, and when you make one of best pizzas in New York and probably the world, you can charge 31 dollars.
Cry more b*tch
Take a bite, lean to the right...(thumbs up).
Mikey Dip Haha! I call it the "Wien Lean." 😉
It's catchy -- I like it !
Your so happy, when you start eating food that you like.
Over payed for a $31 pizza. It's mostly cheese and bread, not worth the value at all!
they buy at a wholesale rate for all product including "artisanal" cheeses;the biggestexpense is rent and they own the building;they charge that silly price because marketing works: you are willing to pay $31for something that costs far less and is no better than many a NYC pizza..;as for skill, after anyone cooks 500 pies they got it down; do you think the place is gonna shut down when he drops dead?
"artisanal" products here are cheese, and the whole price for the "best' does not warrant a $31 dollar pizza;
anyone can make a great pizza, there is nothing special or magical about the process....do it enough times and you get pretty good at the process....i make my own pasta/pizza/and i cook really well and i know plenty of people that cook as well as me, and better...no other training other than hard work and practice; most people can "do it" , perhaps you should at least try...it's not hard or mystical, just work, which you may not be acquainted with(hence your position)
The thing is, you do not have a standard for a "pizza", no one does, but i know a great or even good pizza does not cost 31 dollars...that's marketing, for dupes, like you!
btw, you are wrong about wholesale prices...so out of your league...
you are a dumb=dumb, you prove my point and all points......nyc is not a sourdough city.....but u are a true dumb=dumb!
u dont even know where to purchase great pasta
