And make Slam physical. Does not make much sense that slam would be special, there is no nostalgia to dragon type moves being special as there were no dragon moves that this would have applied to (Dragon Rage being only former dragon move) and Dragonite should be mythically strong given its rarity in the game (only Lance has one)
11:25 I have a suggestion: Have the Ponyta and Rapidash line learn Jump Kick and High Jump Kick in order to further differentiate it from the other fire type animal themes. It would make sense with how horses behave in real life, and would open up the possibility of a more phisically oriented fire pokemon.
Jump Kick makes sense, because Sawsbuck learns in pre-dexit, and it has a similar body shape to Rapidash - similarly, Dodrio also learns Jump Kick. However, Hi Jump Kick wouldn't make tons of sense, because HJK is actually a knee kick, and the English localization doesn't sufficiently get that idea across. Jump Kick is translated from "drop kick", whereas Hi Jump Kick is translated from "flying knee kick". You know the famous art of Blaziken sticking its knee out while jumping? That's the intended idea behind HJK. This is reinforced by its depiction in the anime. If you're not familiar with that Blaziken artwork, an even more famous example of a flying knee kick is the famous "Knee of Justice" forward aerial of Captain Falcon in the Smashbros series. Most 4-legged mammals, such as the horses on which Ponyta and Rapidash are designed, don't have legs with prominating knees. Their knees are relatively higher up on their legs, and instead, it is the ankle joint which prominates, and which serves as their primary bending axis. This means that it doesn't make a lot of biomechanical sense to give HJK to a 4-legged mammal pokemon, and we can see from vanilla learnsets in the series that HJK is in fact reserved exclusively for bipedal mons.
@@BelugaTheHutt What a f-in awesome reply, I didn't know most of that information, thanks for sharing! Jump Kick would most defenitely make more sense in that case 😁
I like it thematically, but isn't Rapidash pretty fast? Giving it access to strong fighting type moves would make it at minimum a check to a lot of normal and all rock types.
@@LotoTheHero That's true, but precisely due to that I think it would give it a usability factor that other fire types don't have precisely due to their rock weakness. Jump Kick isn't particularly strong anyways and it wouldn't be stab, so I think it generally wouldn't be sweeping rock or normal teams anyways. Also, if I'm not mistaken, most rock types are also ground, right? So if anything it's just giving an extra tool to deal with those weaknesses. I could be wrong though lol Edit: I'm not considering High Jump Kick anymore due to the previous reply to my comment.
@@mapleunix1A good rule of thumb, check the Japanese name of a move and its meaning before theory crafting. Headlong Rush made no sense to me as a punching move and I even thought it was a glitch until I saw the Japanese name and explanation behind it: it's the opening move you see in sumo matches. It's why Hariyama gets it and it's unlikely to be given to frail/light looking mons any time soon.
Aerodactyl's a threat and a half in Gen 1 if it has a movepool. Its Attack and Speed is really good though it is a little frail but with type coverage and a high crit rate thanks to its Speed, very little is safe against it.
I remember when I wanted to make Aerodactyl good and my ROM beatable only with level 100s... The result is I'd buffed Aerodactyl so hard that Lance's level 118 Aerodactyl was soloing entire teams with Rock Slide + Earthquake + Dragon-type Hyper Beam + Double-Edge Lesson learned: never overbuff Aerodactyl.
I think this is a good thing if you still get it at level 15 around the 7th gym, so it’s sort of the same philosophy as a pseudo where you have to work hard to have this monster in the late game
Giving Twinneedle to other bug types feels wrong, since the attack involves stinging with two poisonous needles, which doesn't fit Scyther and Pinsir at all An alternative approach could be to change the move Vice Grip into a bug type, which is Pinsir's signature move and would also give Kingler coverage against Grass types
Grass-type Egg Bomb seems pretty insane for Exeggutor. Now I won't have to save the Mega Drain TM for it, which is pretty nice. I also like how this change makes Exeggutor feel like the "haymaker" Grass Pokemon now by giving it a STAB, 100-base Grass move to pair alongside Psychic and Sleep Powder. Makes it all the more terrifying!
The simple fact is Ditto is based around a move it has no chance of getting to use without praying it isn't one-shot. That's why I liked the Pokemon Pure RGB hacks idea of giving the Transform move quick attack priority. Now Ditto can always go first and get off a Transform. Smith isn't going to change the move that much because it wouldn't be very vanilla friendly but others have noticed the problem and addressed it.
@@Magma-Idiot-2001 it would make it much better, due to Transform not copying the HP stat. It makes Ditto not only more bulky in its base form, but also when transformed.
Also, something of note for Machamp: his base speed is low enough that Karate Chop is not auto-crit (just about 86%), so delaying it to much later compared to Mankey doesn't seem to be the best fit.
@@RokuroCarisu I don’t see why Submission is so much inferior to Double Edge. Something like 120 Power and 100 accuracy with recoil would make the move insane
It’s not that it has bad power and a drawback, it’s that it’s another middling Fighting-type move in a game where you don’t want to use Fighting moves plus Fighting-type Pokemon are weak and so Submission takes them out even quicker. Furthermore, even the developers think Submission a mistake - outside of other wrestling Pokémon like Hawlucha and Obstagoon, Submission is basically forgotten. For some reason, Cyndaquil, Chimchar, and Drilbur can learn it by breeding, and there is a Totodile that can be gifted that move, but in this day and age Submission would only be good if there was a Rock Head Pokemon that got Submission. Guess what? No Pokemon that learns Submission knows Rock Head, so literally every Pokémon will take damage from it. Finally, to make it clear that it was probably thrown in in Gen 1 because of the wrestling Machop line, Submission is not usable in Gen 9, while Doublr Edge is usable in Gen 9. Even as far as resistances go, Submission is resisted by Psychic, Poison, Bug, Flying (and Fairy types). Guess what? Most Pokémon in Kanto are Psychic, Poison, Flying, or Bug types! Meanwhile you have only three lines resisted by Normal type. And in later generations, many Pokémon would have a move that suffices more than the recoiling Submission. Submission was basically a mistake for the 20 years it was available as a move.
This all looks great. One thing that’d be cool is letting your starter Pikachu learn surf. Better yet, let every Pikachu and Raichu be able to learn surf.
thats not the issue. its that it will likely be higher than the karate chop level by the time you get the water stone, making it a useless lv up move@@javierhernandezsoliman9198
but thats not the issue. the issue is that the only fighting move poliwrath gets is gotten BEFORE most people will be able to evolve their poliwhirl@@javierhernandezsoliman9198
@@Seth_Hezekiah I would say this AND increasing it's HP and making Transform a priority move/or just make it faster. For the last one it wouldn't even matter if it's a priority move, or you just give it 255 base speed
I forget, does Mew get Transform in Gen 1? I could see not buffing Ditto but still making Transform a Priority move with the excuse of buffing the Legendary. I kinda agree with Smith that Ditto doesn't need to be good, but at least getting to actually see its gimmick take place when you encounter a Trainer using one should be a priority no matter how you feel about its viability for the player to use.
RAZOR WIND POSSIBLY sounds like a better suggestion as a DRAGON TYPE ATTACK. You could make it a base 60 Attack with a high crit ratio OR give it the Solarbeam treatment with the charge up turn valuing it to a base 180 Attack. No Pokemon has EVER really used this move via level up or TM use. Since Dragonite is a DRAGON OF THE SKY, it should be EXCLUSIVE to it via evolution or Level 60; In addition it would be fitting that it be paying homage to your Crystal Legacy team selection for Lance. Either way. PHENOMENAL video. 🔥🔥🔥
Awesome. Please buff dragonair to make it usable in a playthrough as he will probably not evolve before the elite 4 ;( That does make Lance stronger too and that is good news
I think it still learns the new 80bp 100% accurrate dragon type slam. The real train to get on is change dragon type to physical but they may leave it special to ballance it
@@LrnecBuma still, a total base stats of 350 when you are facing elite 4 is kind of a bummer (with no grind most of your pokemons won't go higher than level 47-48 before E4). I would like to see it with no tremendous buff, but you know a 90 in speed and special stats would be great (making it 390 base stats. Not crazy but usable). AND we could even give it a water secondary typing (no weakness anymore) but that maybe would mess with the original intent of Lance being weak to ice type
@12triproberts you're right. But I misspoke. I wasn't saying it was really that bulky. I was implying it would handle an Ice Beam better than the other dragons on his team. Other than Gyarados.
Man, I love these so much! Probably best information video yet thus far! Also, shoutouts to Licking Lickitung and Bubblebeam Vappy. Finally the BUBBLE jet pokemon learns a bubble move WITHOUT a TM.
Arbok should get dig since Jessie's Arbok could dig. I understood the reasoning to put sleep late game but that also needs your ability to catch pokemon since putting them to sleep is the best way to buff catch rates.
Two ideas for Seadra, which I believe could be discussed 1. Give it slam since it gets a dragon type in Kingdra in gen 2 2. Would it be too wild to give Seadra the dragon type too? I know it’ll essentially be pseudo Kingdra at this point, but would it work in game?
I like the idea ! Seadra could also be included in Lance team to avoid the double Dragonair ! And that could be balanced by making it super rare or super hard to evolve
Question: I understand not needing more than 1 dragon move, and slam is a great choice. I am just wondering why not make the Dragon type physical, since Dragonite is the only dragon to learn it and its attack is through the roof. Also, I understand your starter not evolving, but I need some love for Raichu
I'd be okay with Special Slam if Dragonair were buffed to have a Special stat near or at the level of Dragonite's, so as to be a viable pre-evo for the long stretch of time until level 55. No need to buff its other stats, maybe even trade off some of its Attack stat to compensate and apply the distribution change back to Dratini as well. Maybe like 54 or 44 Attack/60 or 65 Special Dratini, and then 74 or 64 Attack/90 or 95 or even 100 Special Dragonair? Give a different niche between the pure Dragon type and its Dragon/Flying evolution. It's also a more comprehensive buff to Lance if he keeps even just one Dragonair on his team. Which he probably should just to avoid the 4x Ice weakness. (Yes, other than making Hyper Beam weaker on them, but the gains to bulk and all other moves would more than make up for that, given everything super effective against them would be Special in this scenario over changing Dragon type to physical, which would just make Dragonair and Dragonite easier to kill with other Pokemon that learn Slam.)
Marowak really needs some buffs. 😬 You get it so late, as late as haunter, and it doesnt get thick club in gen 1 so it just becomes very clearly the worst ground type except onix. You should either buff its attack to reflect thick club, buff its signature moves to put it on an equal foot with eq from mons with higher atk or buff its special so it can actually use all the great special moves it learns.
The problem of boosting Pikachu stats and badges boosts os that it also messes with other pikachus and your other mons. Honestly I think a good route was only changing pikachu Exp group to fast group, exp group are an usually overlooked trait that really helps balance a mon (for single plays) since levels are also taken into damage formula. For movepool I would give it Double Kick, Surf and Fly because these are the moves Pikachu uses during the game intro (and was part of the original plan for Yellow before they put HM chus behind events)
What other Pikachus or other mons? You can't get Pikachu any other way in this game. You can't trade it in and you can't catch it. The only real option is to start 2 games and trade the starter pika to the other so you can have 2 Pikachus and that's fine cause it makes sense for it to have the badge boost from that.
no it doesn't. 1) this is pokemon yellow. there are no other pikachu in the game. Raichu can only be caught in post game. 2) the badge boost 25% is coded to pikachu only. The rest of the mons are still coded for the standard 12.5% buff. 3) pikachu will have access to all HM's in the game. So it will get both surf and fly.
Great changes ! My only nitpick is that you showed Dragon as Special type where I think it should be Physical to make good use of Dragonite insane attack with Slam !
I strongly second this. Dragonite already uses its weak spcl attk for coverage (thunder, fire blast, surf...). It is painful to see his great attack stat wasted. This way dragonite will become a better mixed attacker. You only fight against it once, and nowadays everyone knows that ice melt dragon/flying (not knowing that when i was a kid made lance fight a real epic challenge), so i think that dragonite need some help to be a treath again vs us, the experienced players
I say just buff Dragonair's Special stat (which would also make it more viable for the player) and have it focus on special move coverage and Slam on Lance's team while Dragonite focuses on a more physical/mixed moveset. ...Although, the classic all or nothing power moves of Lance's Dragonite in vanilla Yellow is still threatening, or could even do a nod to Red/Blue's illegal move Barrier and give it Light Screen to handle Ice and Dragon moves if Dragon stays Special. Rock type Pokemon and moves might (kinda) be the new meta for handling such a Dragonite, which I think would be pretty cool (or at least make Bruno look less stupid).
This is a personal thematic thing but i always loved how the starmie line used its magical gem to fire beams in the anime as a mystical source of power. So the only thing id love is instead of giving it psychic give it psybeam and then as a trade off let it learn aurora beam and maybe another coverage move like thundershock to make it more of a coverage attacker, like your idea with hitmonchan, rather than be stuck in a niche of spatker thats a worse water type than blastoise and tentacruel and a worse psychic spammer than alakazam
i'd recommend making golduck learn psychic a little earlier than 42. It would be really helpful for rocket fights but at that level, it's after almost every rocket fight in the entire game.
I loved following every Crystal Legacy vids bit by bit, especially Pokémon changes, and this is like an even better version of those, as it requires more specific changes to keep the game’s feeling, and I can’t wait to finally Nuzlocke both Gen 1 and 2 regularly, thanks!
What is the base power and accuracy of dragon rage? In my opinion it would make perfect sense to change the two dragon moves from special to physical and help Dragonite to utilizie its whooping 134 attack. 😎 Edit: Seriously guys, what was your biggest disappointment in your childhood? Yes, finding out that Dragon Rage had a fixed damage of 40 points. Pokemon Yellow Legacy has only one chance to fix this childhood trauma. Mr. Smith it's your turn to deliver right now! Thumbs up if you agree. For all 90s kids and all mankind!!! 😂
@@jensino Slam was made into a dragon move because it was a move that while other mons could learn it, It doesn't take value away from them by removing it. The dragonite line learns dragon rage and slam both naturally by level up. So dragon rage is the "early" game dragon move where as slam is the later dragon move. If dragon rage was buffed, then it would need to be removed from gyarados as well. This was what allowed pokemon yellow legacy to keep the feel like its yellow. Slam wasn't really used by mons a lot, dragon rage on gyarados was.
@@jensino Normal type slam was just a strictly worse version of body slam, especially with its 75 accuracy. Nearly all the pokemon that learned slam also learned body slam.
@@Blackraptor1234Dragons don't need an early or midgame dragon move. Dragon Rage should be the most powerful dragon attack imo. The name alone stands for absolute destruction. Dragon Rage should be the equivalent to Hydro Pump, Fire Blast, Blizzard etc. 😎
I'm behind every one of these changes! 10/10 Perhaps it's worth considering making: Thunderbolt, Flamethrower, Ice Beam, Psychic available as Game Corner prizes after you beat the game? Just for the sake of having an optimized moveset across multiple teams and such. idk! jsjs
19:03 I like Slam as a dragon move. I thought tri-attack made more sense since dragon's are weak to the dragon type. And tri attack features the only other thing it's weak too and both other types fire and electric are already associated with dragons. There's an ice dragon in the Next Godzilla movie too. So The callback to using it's own weakness for offense in the ice portion of the attack would have been chef's kiss. Dragon's landing a freeze on you after they survive your pitiful ice beam would be disgusting and absolutely on point. Like dang. Slam is good but Tri Attack is such a dragon move.
I fully agree here. It always bothered me, that Tri Attack united the 3 elements into a single attack, yet is considered a normal move, as if the types cancel out each other. It fits so much more as a Dragon Type move
it’s actually wild that I’m watching your content regularly like 10 years after I used to watch the zombies stuff. I remember bragging to ppl that I knew about letterkenny before it was cool because of you lmao. you’ve had an insane evolution Pat
Hey SmithPlays, I just completed the Pokédex on Crystal Legacy a few weeks ago. It was a blast. Thanks for all the work and making a super fun game! Looking forward to Yellow Legacy and its Pokédex!
Honestly I think Strength should be made into a fighting type move. It being an 80 str normal move is redundant when Body Slam exists and it being an HM move basically makes it a dead slot on a Pokemon because its required to finish the game Could probably lower its base power to put it in line with cut
I think it would be fun to at least make Ditto usable, even if you can’t make it good. I think all you would have to do is give it a high speed stat so it can transform before taking a hit. That would kind if mirror it getting Imposter in later games, but it would still take a turn to use so it still wouldn’t be too good
Ditto being “bad” and “supposed to be bad” is a take that nearly made me click away-and I don’t honestly think I’ve ever legitimately tried to make a Ditto battle-worthy. It’s just a 0/10 take and a meme
Elsewhere in the comments, @SonicStation suggested: - Transform = priority move - giving it Splash - giving Splash a 20-30% confusion rate as a “gambling” move And I honestly love that
@@zhaumbiemaking Splash confuse sounds epic actually, I just disagree with the accuracy - make it a 50% confused rate so that it's still bad but not hogwash lol Ditto with extra HP, extra 10 base speed and priority Transform makes the most sense to me, as someone who's played pokémon since it started.
@@12triproberts back then the crunch was bad. Plus this was revolutionary at the time. I’m not upset but it’s also not my favorite gen either. Glad to see it getting updated
While I'm not advocating for bashing Gen 1 development, it was basically the wild west before professional standards were established, but technically speaking: Japanese Red and Green were their first shot, then Japanese Blue was their second shot, then Red and Blue were their third shot, leaving Yellow as their 4th shot at the very least, 5th shot for the international release of Yellow, since there were still changes and bug fixes. Just, every fix of the time was adding additional bubblegum and duct tape over top the previous layer to make each iteration run a bit better without actually fixing the underlying issues. (There's a good reason Gen 2 and Gen 3 weren't able to interact with each other, just too many built up messy coding decisions. Not that Gen 3 was perfect, but it was a much more stable foundation.) What's not excusable is that's still the design philosophy nearly 30 years later. So much easily avoidable spaghetti code, if only the release cycle respected reasonable development needs.
The buffs we need: - Transform as a priority move to mimic the ability Imposter - Give Ditto the move Splash - Buff Splash so that it has a 10-20% chance of causing confusion, turning it into a gambling move
@@smithplayspokemonI tried xD But hey at least consider giving that 10% chance of confusion to Splash. I like to think some Pokémon will look at a Splashing Magikarp and be like, what the heck is going on? XD
This might be an unpopular opinion but i dont think you should put basicly every move at 100% accuracy. I know its annoying to lose of a miss but rng and hax are a part of pokemon and as much as a miss of your own hurts a miss from the opponent can turn the tides in a seemikgly lost battle. I dont know how to describe it but to me it feels wrong see 100% accurate rock throw or take down or slam
well for take down and slam those would be literally the only 100% moves of their type so yeah no this is definitely a good change, innacurate moves are fine when you can choose between consistency or power, and not be like rock flying stuck with inconsistent and weak moves
I mean not all move are 100%, they're just balanced to make sense now. Rock throw was just terrible and so was slam. You still have the strong innacurate moves. You just don't have weak innacurate moves anymore. Why would anyone use a 80BP 75% accurate move when they have 95 BP 100% accurate moves? unless you want to reduce the accuracy of everything but at this point it's just annoying.
Weird request but like, Disable is so bad because of its accuracy can it just be 100% accurate? I see you distributed it a lot and it could help out a lot of those mons.
I know it's inevitable that some pokemon will see less usage than others, but I feel like Hitmonlee has really no use case with these changes. Hitmonchan has a better moveset, and with the special buff it's a fair amount tankier as well. Hitmonlee doesn't learn any special moves, so I'd suggest maybe buffing its special further as you would only effectively be buffing special defense in this case. Perhaps these two could use a bit further tweaking so that they are both useful and one doesn't completely outshine the other. Just a thought.
What changes did Cubone get? Maybe I just missed it, but I didn't hear anything about it or Marowak. I personally would give it more defensive bulk, a slight attack boost to compensate for the non-existence of Thick Club, move its signature move Bonemerang to an earlier level, and give it Fighting type coverage. I also think it could use a defense raising move like Harden, or maybe some more multi-hit moves to capitalize on it's Focus Energy and signature move's gimmick, but maybe that's taking it a bit too far.
You wanted to have Flamethrower as a TM, to help out the fire types like Moltres who, outside of a single pokemon being able to use the Fire Blast TM until post game when it's repurchasable, are stuck with only Ember or Fire Spin. Have you figured out which TM you wanted to replace to put it in yet? Also, have you considered moving TM's around for balancing reasons? Popular ones like Body Slam and Ice Beam should stay where they are, though. But for example: Submission is all the way at the end in Victory Road. Kind of late for a move like that. What if that was moved to the rocket hideout where horn drill was? You start to face fighting types around then and it will help against giovanni's rock and normal type. Horn drill is bought in the celadon department store for cheap so it can stay there. And to replace submission in victory road, maybe substitute since that's locked behind the game corner and is hard to get normally, and substitute is a more advanced kind of move anyway for higher level play, so it fits in victory road. Another example is: Rage is all the way next to Fuschia city, and its usefulness is about done by that point. Maybe moving Rage to the beginning of Mt Moon where Water Gun was to teach the player that it can be used for long dungeons, and water gun is now Flamethrower at the route east of fuschia where rage was, since thats where someone pokemon start to learn Flamethrower, and it makes it available early for others if you don't want to wait for later levels. to learn it. Would moving around lesser known TM's around to when the moves are more appropriate or make sense be a good idea?
@@adrianaballe Dragonite is a mixed attacker. 100 base Special is not a low stat. ...Although, I do feel like Dragonair and Dratini should lean more Special focused, instead of Attack, so that Dragonair can have a viable niche alongside Dragonite, since that level 55 evolution is a long time to wait for the only fully evolved Dragon Type in the game.
ugh, gen 1 movesets are the bane of my existence lmao. currently going through a challenge to beat the game with every single one of them and my GOD is it rough sometimes.
0:00 I will not stand for this crime against the perfect newbie boss Onix. My phallic man was designed to teach the value of special attacks and/or type effectiveness and he shall not be bullied for being created to be an enemy
I agree. But as of now in 2024 everyone that will play this romhack will already know the basics so it makes it more interesting and unpredictable early game and makes onix relevant through the game and not just an early boss.
@Nightmster Except by putting it on Bruno's team, that idea backfires because it takes up two spots on an endgame boss fight and is woefully underpowered as a result. The problem with making Onix specifically to fill the early boss niche at expense of everything else is that unlike other Rpgs, Onix isn't just stuck in that early game spot. Like the player gets the option to use it and it has a decent amount of distribution beyond just Brock so you kneecap a unique party option and later bosses for an idea that you can achieve anyways with simple tweaks in other areas.
If it was designed to do that, they sure didn't design Onix well, because they don't give you any special attackers or type effective pokes in yellow, outside of double kick nidoran.
Big suggestion : Make Seadra a Water/Dragon type and give one to Lance team. Then to balance that, make Horsea a super rare encounter like 1% in a very specific location with the Super Rod only. With the Aerodactyl changes, I want a super buffed Lance fight instead of spamming Ice Beam, and Seadra type would be perfect for that
1% encounter rate is overkill, move that 1 to the tens digit. Super Rod only and a specific location are already hurdles enough. (Maybe Safari Zone? That’d add one more layer to preserve the rarity you’re looking for.) That said, I love everything else about this idea and otherwise agree entirely-especially as an Ice Beam wall
Pokemon’s base stats don’t work the way you described while talking about badge boosts. The 12.5% boost applies to the Pokémon’s actual stats, not their base stats. These are two different things because the base stat is just one of several factors that are plugged into a more complex formula to determine the stats of an individual Pokemon. Badge boosting Pikachu’s attack stat by 25% would boost the attack stat that actually goes into the damage formula, but the base stat stays the same. It’s not equivalent to a base stat of 69, or any number for that matter, because each Pikachu will have different stat experience and DVs
Yeah I was thinking that too. Sounds like the math needs to go back to the drawing board. Although, easiest fix would be to change the badge formula to account for that-but then you’d have to make a point to explain that you changed it and why
@@zhaumbie I think it’s a lot cleaner to just apply it to the actual stat. If you’re overhauling the stat system, you’re changing a pretty fundamental aspect of how Pokemon works, and that doesn’t seem like it’s in the spirit of what this ROM hack is trying to do
@@Matt-no7ggAgreed entirely. I'm just not anticipating a complete ground-up overhaul. Lot of work already. Probably the right move putting in all the extra work though
kingler kinda overshadowed by other mons maybe make his crab hammer 150 base power to make up for its potato 50 special attack and enable him to learn rock slide via TM (he can learn it in later gens too but not in yellow) so one can play a mixed attacker (mainly physical) to contrast him maybe a bit to blastoise mixed attacker (whos mainly special) then
Kingler's Crabhammer is already a high critical hit move which, in Gen 1, actually puts it in line with *Hydro Pump* from the likes of Lapras and Seadra, giving it 3HKOs on Pokémon such as Snorlax, Mew and Gengar! (which is assuming max DVs and stat experience, which opponents lack, making it even stronger)
I'm pretty sure there was some sort of buff to Crab Hammer in Crystal Legacy, so it not being mentioned in this video may fall under the blanket of "assorted carryover changes from Crystal Legacy" if I had to guess. Though, the Gen 1 crit mechanics mentioned may throw a wrench into that assumption.
Kingler is cooler in gen 1 than other gens, brilliant design. 140 base attack non stab damage user which learns swords dance and agility. Also huge defence and an almost always crit high damage water stab to slice through the tanky rocks. I wouldn't change him.
Ice beam as a level up move on Blastoise feels wrong to me. As someone who always picks Squirtle in gen 1, I just used the Icebeam TM on Blastoice. The TM feels right because it's a move that Blastoice has the potential of learning, but being a pure water type couldn't figure it out on its own. That's my only gripe with some of your Pokemon fixes. Pokemon need a reasonable explanation as to why it can learn a move naturally. Not just for the sake of coverage.
That's my issue with Twinneedle here. It's Beedrill's signature move for a reason: Because Beedrill has two needles, that it uses to sting Pokémon and poison them with. But Pinsir and Scyther shouldn't have access to the move
@@Propane_Acccessories ViceGrip is one of Pinsir's main moves, that is Normal type, but would be more suited as a Bug type. There might be more moves that suit the bug type better. Cut was already turned into a Big type move, too. And Scyther can still utilize the flying type, too. Razor Wind also needs a big buff and shouldn't be a normal type attack
I'm still in favour of removing poison typing from Gastly and Haunter. My reasoning is that, while it isn't the only type that lacks a solo type example, the others at least have multiple combinations (ie. no pure flying but you have normal/flying, fire/flying, ice/flying, etc). Second, types can be thought of as being descriptive of what they are or what they control. The Gastly line are ghosts but its less clear that they control poison as they learn no poison moves via leveling. Thirdly, ghosts are supposed to be a counter to psychic types which is undermined by the poison typing. Finally, the reason Gengar should keep his poison typing is for balance reasons as he is a monster with it and would gain too much power by not being tied to it.
I’ve never disagreed with a title more, so you got my click. Seemed like you were going to talk about the sprites, which for me are super nostalgic and charming. Encountering THAT Pikachu sprite in Viridian Forest is one of my fondest memories.
Move suggestions: Make Razor Wind a priority move - essentially a Gen 1 version of Extremespeed. Give it to Pidgeot. Go all the way with Solarbeam and make it 190-200 BP - as flashy (heh) as it is with 180 power, it's still worse than just using Razor Leaf since you can switch around it. With 190-200 BP, it's much more oppressive and is basically a rapidly ticking time bomb - you can switch your resist in but it's still gonna hurt, and suddenly it's scarier than Razor Leaf was. If you're worried about it being too strong, maybe see if the broken Focus Energy code can be applied to make Solarbeam never crit. Also, just make Transform a priority move and you don't need to do ANYTHING else to make Ditto interesting.
Ok, but why Slam from all moves was turned into Dragon-type? It's hitting enemy with long tail or something like this, it isn't dragonic enough imho, a lot of animals has long tail and should be able to use it. I know, it's move for literally one pokemon in one battle and player probably won't catch it, but seriously, why you don't change Dragon Rage into something usable? Dragon Rage isn't a simply rage everyone can be in, it's dragon in rage, something special for only one Dragon-type. And why Dragon-type still is special? You already move Ghost-type to special for only one Ghost-type Pokemon, so why don't move Dragon to physical, because the only one Dragon-type Pokemon has higher physical attack? Ok, Dragonite's special isn't as terrible as Gengar's physical attack, but still
@@Blackraptor1234 Dragonite is meant to serve as a close-to-final-boss monster that you need to grind a lot to be able to use it yourself. It has every right to be powerful.
@RokuroCarisu for sure. Which is why there is discussion about whether dragon should be physical or not. They are testing it out to see if it fits. Currently it leans more yes than no.
It would be nice if there was a better Bug Move as a finisher/sweeper though. Twineedle at combined 80 power is cute and all, but considering the deep move pool available to every other type, and how broken Flamethrower is at 95 BP plus burn, Sludge at 90 BP plus Poison, or Thunderbolt at 95 BP plus paralysis, or 95 BP Ice Beam with chance to freeze, I don't really see why Bug would have to be so hard gated. Especially considering how squishy Bug Pokémon are.
It should be remembered that Bug is a Physical Type where most of those you mention are Special Types, and Poison doesn't have very good offensive coverage. The pokemon Bug Type moves are good at dealing with tend to have MUCH lower Defense stat than their Special stat, even a good number of the ones they do neutral damage to instead of just when being super effective.
I know you’re not gonna make Ditto better, but one idea I’ve had for a while to make ditto viable is simply giving Transfrom priority Because it’ll get the Imposter ability later down the line that does essentially that
A small change for ditto that could be interesting would be to maybe give it small HP buff, but more importantly give it large speed buff so it always has the chance to transform before the enemy has a chance to hit them. It would make the ditto feel more ditto if it always transformed at least once.
I would say Rock is in a similar position to Dragon that its intended design - to be a tanky type that isn't as reliable offensively - means it shouldn't be buffed much.
But the rock type is terrible defensely, because it has the most weaknesses out of any type tied with Grass, and its great offensively, because it hits 4 types super effectively.
Only Onix got buffs. Most of the fixes are movesets. Most Gen 1 Rock types don't learn STAB moves, of which in Gen 1 are only Rock Throw and Rock Slide
@@M4x_P0w3r rock is actually a better defensive type than ice, bug and grass in gen 1. It has only 4 weaknesses while grass has 5, and it has 4 resistances, so dude's point still stands.
@@nonamehero5570 Okay, so there are still 11 types better defensively than rock. My point still stands. Game Freak has tried for decades to make the rock type a defensive one by making rock types slow and physically bulky yet they are folded by so many common types, when they should have gone more for fast glass cannons. Same with Ice honestly.
There’s a very easy buff you can do for Ditto. Buff it’s speed so it’s the fastest mon in the game so it can at least have a bootleg version of Imposter in gen 1. Sure Ditto will have a super high crit rate as a Ditto, but it will take the transformed pokemon’s crit rate, so it’d only be useful for struggle strats. This way you won’t buff transform itself via giving it priority, unless you really want to give more PP to the transformed moves, but I think the bootleg imposter effect with the speed buff could be good enough.
Highest Speed + Flinches the opponent when you use it. Also give the move priority so it beats out other quick attacks. The only real way to make “imposter”
@ulegnaa That is true and was in the back of my mind. Could remove it from Mew’s learnset. Could also rename a buffed Transform as "Imposter" and then convert one of the Conversion moves to Transform and hand it out to Mew and a few other pokemon
Ditto deserves a HP and Speed buff, not because it's supposed to be good, but it's supposed to be fun. Transforming into an opposing Pokémon and beating its own trainer with it is such a flex and gives you opportunities to use Pokémon you wouldn't have used by yourself. Similarly to using Metronome.
I don't agree with allowing stone evolutions to learn their pre-evo move set. That was a balancing mechanic in gen 1. You couldn't catch a pokemon and immediately make it stronger without the trade off of locking their moves. Otherwise, why even have the pre-evo stage? They could have just let Eevee be the only stone evo pokemon.
Their evolutions and prior had too many flaws for it to be properly balanced in the first place. He's fixing the issue by removing that mechanic in the first place and focusing on streamlining the game experience of a nearly 30 year old game. Trust me, no one will protest this specific change.
I like the extanded philosophy of what the nidos already had. When they evolve that have most of the learnset but if you hold off several levels you can a extra valuable move like dig without needing tms
@juicebox90000 I suppose it doesn't really matter as these are hypothetical fixes to a 30 year old game, but if there is no downside to using a stone right away, why not just ditch the 1st stage altogether?
Same moves, except for one coveted move only on an earlier version. The balance could be exemplified further if the learnset was raised on the the fully evolved by 5 or so levels for each successive move, thereby giving you a reason to hold off on evolution that do4esn't lock you out of the moves, instead it makes learning them take longer.@@WiGgYof09
I'd love to see a speed boost for beedrill, it's so slow despite what it's supposed to be. Honestly every bug pokemon other than pincer or scyther could use a 10-20 stat boost somewhere. Venemoth getting a stat boost but not beedrill is criminal. Tho I do appreciate the paras buff, however the little shroom crab def needs a bit more.
While I’m liking you adding a proper dragon move, making Slam into Dragon just doesn’t sit right as it’s just… slam. Why didn’t you just do the nightshade treatment but for dragon rage and turn it into a 80 special move?
If I could make a suggestion, for the Poli line, move Karate Chop to the mid-thirties and put low-kick in at the upper twenties. Poliwag doesn't evolve to Poliwhirl until 25, so putting a level-up for Poliwrath there doesn't make much sense (unless Poliwhirl also learns the move at the same level).
I honestly think that another solution would be to add a mechanic that adds extra points to Pikachu's stats based on happiness. So at max happiness, it would have a +51 x Level% extra stat point in every stat. (I got this by dividing 255 among HP, Attack, Defense, Speed and Special)
Other changes I can see is reclassifying Dodrio as Fighting/Flying, Ninetales as Fire/Ghost and Seadra as Water/Dragon. Having a repeatable way of getting TMs would also be nice. I also can also see Razor Wind being reclassified as an early game Dragon type move that functions similarly to Twister; a 40-60 BP Dragon move with a 10-30% chance to flinch. It would at least give some use to it.
Great Job. That Oddish is going to be early slayer. Maybe Paras should also get Leech Seed. How about bringing back to Pikachu Swift as mid-move instead of Headbutt?
For Pokemon's stats, I personally think that it would be cool to change a Pokemon's Special stat to whichever number is higher in gen 2 i.e. Changing Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan's Special from 35 (which are their current Special Attacks) to 110 (which are their current Special Defenses). Also, giving all the Pokemon that got little stat boosts in later gens, like Pidgeot gaining ten points in speed, those boosts. As for moves, as a lot them got buffs in later gens, I think that it would be nice for them to gain those buffs in this game.
Yellow Legacy is LIVE May 4th! Go watch the video ‘I made the Perfect Yellow Romhack’ to get the download the patch link!!
What's the ost at 8:52?
The only change I’d like to see to seadra is giving it slam as a reference to the dragon typing it would have gotten on evolution
@@JJ-sn2ys Didn't he make ghost special and dragon physical?
GREAT idea!
Can you explain what you mean? Why would slam be a reference to dragon typing?
@@OfficialRyanx he made slam a dragon type move
I could be wrong though lol
Edit: I'm not considering High Jump Kick anymore due to the previous reply to my comment.
Giving Lickitung lick? This man must be stopped!
I was hoping he would say Mr Mime would learn Mimic.
Aerodactyl's a threat and a half in Gen 1 if it has a movepool. Its Attack and Speed is really good though it is a little frail but with type coverage and a high crit rate thanks to its Speed, very little is safe against it.
I’ll just say this - Lance is now VERY scary
I remember when I wanted to make Aerodactyl good and my ROM beatable only with level 100s...
The result is I'd buffed Aerodactyl so hard that Lance's level 118 Aerodactyl was soloing entire teams with Rock Slide + Earthquake + Dragon-type Hyper Beam + Double-Edge
Lesson learned: never overbuff Aerodactyl.
As it should be! It is a giant pterosaur wyvern, it should be super strong and intimidating to reflect the design
I think this is a good thing if you still get it at level 15 around the 7th gym, so it’s sort of the same philosophy as a pseudo where you have to work hard to have this monster in the late game
Giving Twinneedle to other bug types feels wrong, since the attack involves stinging with two poisonous needles, which doesn't fit Scyther and Pinsir at all
An alternative approach could be to change the move Vice Grip into a bug type, which is Pinsir's signature move and would also give Kingler coverage against Grass types
Vice grip was a normal move in gen1. Twin needle absolutely slams poison and psychic in gen 1.
Poliwag being available near Pallet Town is a good nod to the Pokemon adventures manga.
It also buffs Chansey in PvE by giving it a high-power Special move
RIP Cubone and Marowak. The only Niche they had was that they learned Ground stab without TMs like other ground types beyond Geodude.
They got a buff of 30 points to special as compensation, basically the ability to use Blizzard and Fire Blast which it couldn't before
They got a really good special buff and learnable TMs buff to compensate for this dw

A moment of silence for ditto
Edit: Ditto got buffed :)
:'(
The only thing I would give to Ditto is a higher base speed, so it can use Transform first and not eating 2 hits before it's first attack xD
@@erik19borgniaI'd give a higher HP as well.
Something I'd love to see in this game is the ability to rematch trainers. Always annoyed me that gen 1 didn't have this.
Gym Leader rematches at the very least are almost a certainty if Crystal Legacy is any indication.
It came out in 1995, let's give them a break.
THE SEADRA CONSPIRACY SPREADS!!!
😎
Also, something of note for Machamp: his base speed is low enough that Karate Chop is not auto-crit (just about 86%), so delaying it to much later compared to Mankey doesn't seem to be the best fit.
It's still more powerful than Submission.
Theres an issue with Poliwrath getting karate chop at lv 25. Poliwhirl will likely be 30ish by celedon city, so it won't get its only fighting move

You could make Ditto somewhat... okay i guess, by giving it like 70-80 base HP and making Transform a priority move
Don't even do that. Just make it so that it gets full pp when it transforms instead of 5.
Look, just increase it's HP and speed to 70
@@Seth_Hezekiah I would say this AND increasing it's HP and making Transform a priority move/or just make it faster.
For the last one it wouldn't even matter if it's a priority move, or you just give it 255 base speed
Could do priority, high speed for Ditto, and make the move flinch. That way it works like imposter.
Then you just need to do something about Mew…

Please buff dragonair to make it usable in a playthrough as he will probably not evolve before the elite 4 ;(
That does make Lance stronger too and that is good news

@@LrnecBuma still, a total base stats of 350 when you are facing elite 4 is kind of a bummer (with no grind most of your pokemons won't go higher than level 47-48 before E4). I'm one of them and I believe that he's done an awesome job. I also enjoyed what he did in Crystal Legacy.
Two ideas for Seadra, which I believe could be discussed
1. Give it slam since it gets a dragon type in Kingdra in gen 2
2. Would it be too wild to give Seadra the dragon type too? I know it’ll essentially be pseudo Kingdra at this point, but would it work in game?
I like the idea ! Seadra could also be included in Lance team to avoid the double Dragonair ! And that could be balanced by making it super rare or super hard to evolve
also support more buffs to Seadra to make it more closely aligned with Gen 2 Kingdra
Question: I understand not needing more than 1 dragon move, and slam is a great choice.
I am just wondering why not make the Dragon type physical, since Dragonite is the only dragon to learn it and its attack is through the roof.
Also, I understand your starter not evolving, but I need some love for Raichu
I agree. Dragonite needs to feel like a boss
You get it so late, as late as haunter, and it doesnt get thick club in gen 1 so it just becomes very clearly the worst ground type except onix.

Pikachu is the only Pokémon that gets the increased badge boost, all others get the regular badge boost.
@@essentures How does it mess with other mons? They get the usual badge boosts, 12.5%. Only Pikachu gets more.
no it doesn't.
@@Seth_Hezekiah never mind, if badge boosts only changes starter Pikachu it's ok ^^
@@jarayan9939 Base 100 Special is not weak...

Could probably lower its base power to put it in line with cut
I think it would be fun to at least make Ditto usable, even if you can’t make it good. I think all you would have to do is give it a high speed stat so it can transform before taking a hit. Ditto needs more HP, it's the only Ditto's original stat it use whole fight.
Ditto being “bad” and “supposed to be bad” is a take that nearly made me click away-and I don’t honestly think I’ve ever legitimately tried to make a Ditto battle-worthy.
It’s just a 0/10 take and a meme
Elsewhere in the comments, @SonicStation suggested:
- Transform = priority move
- giving it Splash
- giving Splash a 20-30% confusion rate as a “gambling” move
And I honestly love that
@@zhaumbiemaking Splash confuse sounds epic actually, I just disagree with the accuracy - make it a 50% confused rate so that it's still bad but not hogwash lol
Ditto with extra HP, extra 10 base speed and priority Transform makes the most sense to me, as someone who's played pokémon since it started.
Will Beedrill get a better Poison move than Poison Sting? Sludge doesn't make sense, but Acid would be useful, and bee stings irl are acidic!
I will say this for G1. It was their first shot at it
@@12triproberts back then the crunch was bad.
Not that Gen 3 was perfect, but it was a much more stable foundation.)
What's not excusable is that's still the design philosophy nearly 30 years later. So much easily avoidable spaghetti code, if only the release cycle respected reasonable development needs.
With the updates you listed, a lot of Pokemon I skipped in Generation 1 initially will be worth trying out in the ROM hack
I probably missed it before this vid, but SUPER happy with Slam becoming a Dragon move! One of the coolest ideas you presented before
The buffs we need:
- Transform as a priority move to mimic the ability Imposter
- Give Ditto the move Splash
- Buff Splash so that it has a 10-20% chance of causing confusion, turning it into a gambling move
Okay I love this.
Never😆
Those are actually good changes!
Swift should be the only inevitable hit in my opinion
Missing feels bad. There are moves which lower accuracy and the more powerful moves are less accurate
Also, rock throw isn’t 100% accurate.
Then you don't understand how gen 1 accuracy works
make dragon attacks physical
slam being special just looks wrong and most pokemon you gave slam have horrible special stat
Weird request but like, Disable is so bad because of its accuracy can it just be 100% accurate? I see you distributed it a lot and it could help out a lot of those mons.
16:20 give Seadra the dragon move Slam
I couldn't stop looking at machamp's pecs moving in the sprite
So Dragon moves stay special and don’t turn into physical moves?
Hoping it will be physical to better suit dragonite since he made dark physical on crystal legacy to better suit tyranitar.
@adrianaballe And made Ghost Special even in this mod so the one Ghost line makes better use of its one improved Ghost move.
Poor Marowak, one of the worst pokemon in gen 1 and it receive no real buff.
0:00 I will not stand for this crime against the perfect newbie boss Onix. My phallic man was designed to teach the value of special attacks and/or type effectiveness and he shall not be bullied for being created to be an enemy
Exactly. The buffing of Onix completely misses the point of it.
@@Seth_Hezekiahconfusion for butterfree
Big suggestion : Make Seadra a Water/Dragon type and give one to Lance team. Then to balance that, make Horsea a super rare encounter like 1% in a very specific location with the Super Rod only. With the Aerodactyl changes, I want a super buffed Lance fight instead of spamming Ice Beam, and Seadra type would be perfect for that
1% encounter rate is overkill, move that 1 to the tens digit. Super Rod only and a specific location are already hurdles enough. (Maybe Safari Zone? That’d add one more layer to preserve the rarity you’re looking for.)
That said, I love everything else about this idea and otherwise agree entirely-especially as an Ice Beam wall
He’s said several times he isn’t changing types
No
@@smithplayspokemonFair ! I'll enjoy it a lot all the same ! Thanks for taking the time to answer ! Good luck for the project !
At that point, it would be as if he simply added Kingdra to Gen 1.
I love what you did with Hitmonchan(10:08). This makes Hitmonchan stand out as the only Fighting type that has high special.
I'm currently running an Aerodactyl in the Emerald battle frontier so i appreciate the Aerodactyl love on display here
kingler kinda overshadowed by other mons
maybe make his crab hammer 150 base power to make up for its potato 50 special attack and enable him to learn rock slide via TM (he can learn it in later gens too but not in yellow)
so one can play a mixed attacker (mainly physical) to contrast him maybe a bit to blastoise mixed attacker (whos mainly special) then
Kingler's Crabhammer is already a high critical hit move which, in Gen 1, actually puts it in line with *Hydro Pump* from the likes of Lapras and Seadra, giving it 3HKOs on Pokémon such as Snorlax, Mew and Gengar! (which is assuming max DVs and stat experience, which opponents lack, making it even stronger)
I love the Rock Slide idea. Crabhammer I would just buff the accuracy by 5 or 10 points if any and that's the only change is make for it.
@@MadMalMan I see nothing wrong with giving Kingler moves it can learn in GSC that exist in Yellow. Rock Slide makes Kingler more useful in general.
How about turning Barrage into a Grass move as well? It's already Exeggcute/Exeggutor's starting move and not too extreme.
pretty good changes
i will keep crying myself to sleep until rapidash gets horndrill tho 😔
Lickitung learning Lick?! No way!🤯
Next thing he's going to tell that Growlithe learns Growl.
Neither Growlithe nor Growl are called that in the original version, Growlithe is Gardie and Growl is Cry.
Growlithe is a police dog, dogs growled, police dog growls.
you're a mad man
Ice beam as a level up move on Blastoise feels wrong to me.
I think it having cannons is a good justification.
That's my issue with Twinneedle here. It's Beedrill's signature move for a reason: Because Beedrill has two needles, that it uses to sting Pokémon and poison them with.
But Pinsir and Scyther shouldn't have access to the move
@@solidzackThe only other option is to pull moves in from future generations
@@Propane_Acccessories ViceGrip is one of Pinsir's main moves, that is Normal type, but would be more suited as a Bug type. There might be more moves that suit the bug type better.
Cut was already turned into a Big type move, too. And Scyther can still utilize the flying type, too. Razor Wind also needs a big buff and shouldn't be a normal type attack
@@solidzack good points. Forgot about vicegrip
Did you fix tri attack? I always thought it seemed like they forgot to program the status conditions until gen2
I’ve never disagreed with a title more, so you got my click. Seemed like you were going to talk about the sprites, which for me are super nostalgic and charming. Encountering THAT Pikachu sprite in Viridian Forest is one of my fondest memories.
Shouldn't exeggcute get softboiled?
No, because it's a bunch of seeds, not actual eggs, and that is Chansey's signature move.
Exeggutor would be ridiculous with that move.
Move suggestions:
Make Razor Wind a priority move - essentially a Gen 1 version of Extremespeed.
Ok, Dragonite's special isn't as terrible as Gengar's physical attack, but still
Because it fits, and there is no benefit to Slam being Normal.
I know you’re not gonna make Ditto better, but one idea I’ve had for a while to make ditto viable is simply giving Transfrom priority
Because it’ll get the Imposter ability later down the line that does essentially that
A small change for ditto that could be interesting would be to maybe give it small HP buff, but more importantly give it large speed buff so it always has the chance to transform before the enemy has a chance to hit them.
I disagree. Rhydon with rock slide TM in Gen 1 is a MONSTER
@@wafflebroz the problem with buffing transform is that it also helps Mew as it also gains access to it
@ulegnaa That is true and was in the back of my mind. Could remove it from Mew’s learnset.
Could also rename a buffed Transform as "Imposter" and then convert one of the Conversion moves to Transform and hand it out to Mew and a few other pokemon
The worst part of watching a new fantastic RUclips series, is that there isnt enough to watch!! Keep it up :D
Aw thanks :)
@@WiGgYof09you have no access to the stone right away, when you get them is balancing.
The only buff I can see Ditto getting is to Transform. The moves it gives Ditto should have full PP, not just 5
The obvious issue is it's low speed and HP. Low PP isn't an issue when it doesn't even manage to transform before kicking the bucket

Same reason why Bite is changed from Normal to Dark in the original Gen 2 games. I'm fine with that or just Dragon Rage being 80BP too though tbh
Ekans should be able to learn dig as in the anime you see Jesse's Ekans use dig in Mt Moon
The Psyduck line, which isn't Psychic, learn Psy moves. The Starmie line, which has a Psychic pkmn, doesn't learn Psy moves.
Pkmn logic!
Great Job.
That Oddish is going to be early slayer. Maybe Paras should also get Leech Seed.
How about bringing back to Pikachu Swift as mid-move instead of Headbutt?
20:46 You better be putting it under the Truck. It would be a crime if you don't.
The new Green sprite looks sick 👀
For Pokemon's stats, I personally think that it would be cool to change a Pokemon's Special stat to whichever number is higher in gen 2 i.e. Changing Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan's Special from 35 (which are their current Special Attacks) to 110 (which are their current Special Defenses). Also, giving all the Pokemon that got little stat boosts in later gens, like Pidgeot gaining ten points in speed, those boosts.
As for moves, as a lot them got buffs in later gens, I think that it would be nice for them to gain those buffs in this game.
Pikachu’s atk after obtaining the Boulder Badge: nice
Does Arcanine get flamethrower early in Yellow Legacy? The only reason I don't use the line in Gen 1 is because they learn the move at 50.
